I had my GP for 20 years when he retired. It broke my heart. He really got me through some tough times. Heart of gold.

Family Medicine deserves more recognition. I say that as a patient. Thank you Dr. Yan Yu and Dr. Glaucomflecken.

My GP is amazing. She's always upbeat, and as a person with depression, I know how much energy that costs her on a constant basis. I wish I could gift her with a Jonathan! (though her office staff is lovely)

I used to work for a hospital that also owned varying medical groups. I would be in charge of examining the office diagnostic codes and the underlying medical condition that brought the patient in to see the medical practitioner. I usually did the same practices that were general practitioners. One of my coworkers was on vacation and I had to do the EPIC reviews for her family practice group. They saw about 170 patients in ONE DAY! On Saturday they had over 90 patients seen in the office! Some of these were complex visits and some were very routine requiring less review on my part. I couldn't believe the volume. Mind you there were multiple doctors but that is still many more patients then OB/GYNE or other practices that got higher reimbursement! Hats off to family practice!!

I love that you talk about all of this and even included some extra like the talk about gifts. It also shows something very important: People value their health greatly and so much so that if we have the funds, sharing them to the people who helped us, is absolutely a no-brainer. It's crucial that we prioritise and vale wellbeing and the people who are there to support us when we need them!
It is right that you could not accept such a generous gift for the sake of protecting the doctor-patient relationship. The thing is, this SHOULD NOT BE A SPECIAL GIFT! (T~T) Money to utilise a good life and things like re-destribution of workloads, so that you have time to live, should be so normal, that noone even thinks of it as "gift material"!!
Thank you for your hard work.

I feel your pain with the need for help and it's so sad that the system doesn't recognize how the admin work bogs down physicians. That work can easily employ so many very well-qualified people IF they are willing to pay a decent salary. I know this because I am a medical transcriptionist in Canada and I contract with a company that also contracts scribes. The demand of knowledge/expertise is extremely high. Many people in my industry are simply not interested in scribing because the pay is absolutely ridiculous given the expectations/qualifications (ie, we practically have to be a doctor). You wouldn't believe what is expected of a scribe, as we work live online as the physician and patient are meeting. The patient chart is on the screen and the scribe is expected to review the chart including lab work and advise the physician if they miss anything for tests that need to be ordered etc. The scribe is also expected to understand the entire conversation, ie even if there are extremely difficult accents of both physician/patient and both are talking at the same time. All the while, the scribe is expected to be transcribing a record for the physician to read immediately after the patient leaves the office so the physician can sign off. There are many, many qualified transcriptionists out there that would love to scribe, be a Jonathon, but no one is willing to do it for a mere pittance. Nothing against you personally Dr. Yu, it's just the state of the industry we work in.

I wanted to point out that the video was not finished. There are like 15 more seconds with a great punchline.
But then I realized Doctor Yu was probably too busy being the backbone of healthcare to finish it.

Before we moved to the Netherlands my mother worked as a nurse both in the local retirment home and the hospital in a small town in Alberta. For a while she was our hospitals star doctor's Jonathan, voluntarily of course. I think there's a special kind of grit Albertan rural medicine staff have... Or maybe I'm just a bit biased, my mother is one badass woman after all.

I have a fair amount of student loans as a US med student (from before I landed a generous scholarship) so I'm not sure if I could've resisted a $1000 present haha
