For people out of the loop, somehow EA was in charge of managing servers on ps3 tf2. Xbox 360 got the better deal with player hosted servers. Man I loved the 360 version of TF2, a time capsule of a time long gone. When Xbox set up that site for the 20 year anniversary, I thought my most played tittle would be Halo 3 or Red dead redemption, but nope, it was The orange box. The hours I spent playing it let me to love more than just gaming but the creation aspect behind it. When I knew about custom maps and such, I couldn't wait for an update with new maps, but with how Microsoft handled game updates back then, sadly it never came to be. So this leads me to get the PC version of ToB, which led me to steam and the modding tools. Playing custom maps was just fantastic, the core gameplay of TF2 was too much fun, how could they ruin it?.... Well, needless to say that nowadays TF2 looks nothing like it did on launch, not even the vanilla stuff. Personally I think TF2 got too hectic for me, and not in a good way, I loved the idea of cosmetics but geez they focused WAAAY too much on it.
More hours in TF2 over Halo 3? Wow that's quite the anomaly in the 360-sphere. While personally the cosmetics don't bug me THAT much, it can see how it can ruin the game for some. At times it's just too much visual noise for the game's sake, that visual simplicity is a defining feature.
@@ph_grog I know right? I swear I spent hours on end playing customs on Halo 3 that on TF2, but here we are. My problem with the cosmetics doesn't rely much on the hats or outfits but the particle effects ones. Readability gets thrown out the window and there's no easy way to turn those off, specially on official servers. At least there's now an outsourced team working on the game, hopefully they decide to add QoL options to the game like turning off certain cosmetics, maybe even a little optimization here and there. We'll have to wait and see.
Thank you! At like the 75% mark of completion, it dawned on my that laptops exist, so I just had to incorporate that as a nod to any holes in the logic of the video's premise.

Incase you're curious; Using a programme like Horizon, you can edit the config files of your game. Doing this allows you to actually bind buttons on your controller to commands the game can run. When I first discovered this, I would bind Right on the D-Pad to "sv_cheats 1;noclip;god". Looking back now 11 years later, you could definitely bind something like Left on the D-Pad to "tf_bot_add 23;tf_bot_difficulty 3;tf_bot_fire_weapon_allowed 1;tf_bot_keep_class_after_death 0", which would add 23 Expert Level bots.
@@ph_grog Not even! You can download and edit your profile data entirely without mods! The key to enjoying TF2 during the apocalypse is having an Xbox 360 and a PC lmao
You would be surprised that they only added Pyros airblast months after tf2 was released so its a note for the console version on how old the games are
The orange box introduced me to half life and valve games in general and I was a pro in tf2 mainly for pyro and sniper and was confused when I would look up videos of tf2 I would be confused about scrap, hats and the other weapons
It really was quite a package deal back in the day, but it really is a thing of the past, not only in the technical specs (resolution, framerate), but TF2 can at time feel like a different game with all of the skins and hats.
I remeber when I was a little kid (I am mexican and did not understood english back then), I had the xbox 360 and I did not what a LAN cable was, what xbox live meant, did not search up many of the basic stuff because I did not know what to look for because I was such an incell. All the games I played through the course of about 8 - 10 years old, I played them solo (Even COD and stuff), I remeber getting the Orange Box bundle because i thought "3 games... good" and when I went to play TF2 i just got into game all by myself... for years I thought TF2 was just you as a player running around a map shooting guns at randomness, jumping around and changing weapon classes. Took me some time schooling to learn about what wifi conection and the english language and looking back at those times I really do miss being so innocent and naive and so trouble free.
That gave me quite a laugh! Don't be so hard on yourself man, it happens to the best of us. Even myself, I used to play on my friend's Xbox 360 without any internet (not that it mattered that much with split screen!), and I didn't understand how to connect my DS to the internet until I was like, 11? It wasn't until I was around 14 where I started to properly game on steam with internet. With that said, I agree, there was a charm in the simplicity of gaming without understanding everything behind it.
Played this when i was younger on xbox. There used to be a few servers running but other than that there was not much to do, however occasionally there are the few hacked servers that have custom maps .
I remember being an engineer main playing the orange box on the 360 so much and being so jealous of the wrangler and the minisentry on PC. Part of the reason I got my first gaming pc was to play tf2.
I feel ya! When I first noticed the different weapons, I didn't think much of it. After I got some of them for my own though, it's really hard to go back. Not only for the sake of variety, but it really gives you the ability to form versatile kits for different scenarios.
i miss the tf2 xbox community. i remember being a kid doing all the glitches and having fun with the modders. i remember teenagegnome and ikewitherspoon being the top dogs hahaaa
Ah yes, the orange box on the Xbox 360. I remember this. I loved it, it was my lifeline when I didn't have a PC. I will always hold this game close to my heart.
Very nice video overall, but I disagree with your conclusion that there would be merit in getting the Xbox 360 version of TF2 if it's your only option to play the game because "any TF2 is good TF2". Personally I was a console gamer for a long time, and this version of TF2 (without Xbox Live Gold) was my introduction to the game, and to put it lightly it gave me no idea of what the proper TF2 experience was, and I never gave TF2 any thought until 2018 when I got a pc, but by then I think it was safe to say I missed the glory days of the game. That is probably just because I didn't have online, but I would argue that I was able to enjoy many other shooters because of bots, so the lack of them in Xbox360 TF2 practically made it useless to offline gamers.
Thanks! I don't disagree that the console versions of the game is the inferior version to play, but the core gameplay of TF2 is solid that even without the updates, I bet it's still fun (this is assuming you have an Xbox Live Gold subscription. That statement was meant under that context). The glory days may have passed, but it's still possible to have tons of fun playing the PC version. I first started playing it around 10 years ago, and barring a few exceptions, I've had more fun in the last year than I did all the years before.
This was my only way to play tf2 for a long time, I played back in 2015-2016 and you could still find matches online, sometimes the lobby would be hacked to add in assets that are there in the files but not accessible in a non hacked lobby like different voice commands and stuff
While hackers can be quite disruptive to standard gameplay, when their fiddling leads to a bunch of unusual nonsense in game... that's always something fun to experience.
@@ph_grog yeah hackers on console tf2 generally didn't use their hacks to ruin people's day, but to host lobbies and let people use the "help" voice lines and whatnot lol
You don't need an internet connection to play PC TF2. You can play offline and on LAN servers. The PC version allows you to play against bots, not a thing on console. The requirements to play TF2 on PC are a TV, the PC and a controller. Just like on console.
@@yeetneet5334 Not if you use a Steam emulator, actually. But then you're stuck with the 1.0 version of the game and that's not really what you want, frankly. Also, kinda weird to want to play TF2 during an apocalypse without having downloaded and played it before in your life so I'd say that's an unrealistic requirement anyway
Oh yeah for sure, you can play TF2 on PC with a controller just like on the consoles, but as a more complete package. However that would require you to have all of that on a hard drive, ready to go. Say you were doing a game purge of your steam library the night before the apocalypse, welp, TF2 on 360 will be right there, ready to go with no hassle!
@@Thornskade Without any internet, that would require some foresight to have all of that accessible. In regards to why you'd play the 360 version, in an apocalypse I'd reckon anything to keep you distracted would alleviate some stress... such as an intact Xbox 360 and a copy of TF2!
Nice video, your style reminds me a lot of Scott the Woz, but with less cringe jokes, which is a good thing (I like Scott buts it's true let's be real, he can be cringy lol). Anyways You gotta do more of these style reviews, your onto something.
My favorite part of the 360 release of TF2 was that on 2 fort if you crouch in the corner of the spawn door on one of the teams you could just walk right in and spawn kill the enemy team. Just infinite free spy backstabs.
Oh man, I don't know why but that gave me a flashback to a video I saw way back involving the spy, and while I won't spell out the whole title it starts with "surprise". If you know, you know.
Something to note, the engineer only being able to upgrade his teleporter and dispenser to level 1 was the way things were in the initial state of the game back in 2007 on PC as well. I think that allowing him to upgrade these buildings was added in late 2008, after the Heavy update (which added the Sandvich, Natascha, Killing Gloves of boxing, and maps including Badwater Basin, Steel and the Arena mode maps) but before the Scout update (which added the Force-A-Nature, Sandman, Bonk Atomic punch and the Maps Egypt and, urgh, Junction). Likewise, the Pyro airblast didn't exist on launch either and was only added during his own major update, which was in mid 2008 and also saw him gain the Backburner, Flare gun and Axetinguisher, as well as added the maps Turbine and Fastlane. The game would have been about a year old at that point, so its fitting that this stuff was never added to the console versions which did not get any of the vast number of gameplay and content changes that were released after launch. Another difference you can see in the video is the change of stored ammo for the Rocket Launcher, Grenade Launcher and Stickybomb Launcher, at launch the Soldier and Demoman had almost twice as much ammo for these weapons than they do now, it was probably nerfed into its current state so that these classes, which are very powerful in the right hands, had to be more mindful of their ammo and couldn't spam quite so willy-nilly, and of course they still have their massive reserve on console. Its a bit sad that they didn't put in bots for console players at launch as you said, and also highly ironic when on PC today bots are all too commonplace (and they have managed to create effective official bots if you want to play maps like Nucleus and Dustbowl offline).
The one that started it all. The poor thing is so grandfathered, that its successor (team fortress classic) sucked up most of the credit for being the true classic.
What’s wild is I had the PS3 version of Orange Box I still had fun with it as a kid. I hope Half Life or TF2 come to console with Cross play or something.
It is kinda surprising that they didn't release a new and updated version for the current gen consoles. Discounting a few examples (Portal on switch), Valve has really been keeping it tight on PC only.
Ok real talk I put about a thousands hours into xbox tf2. I was probably one of the top players, and I was the only person I ever saw that did rocket jumps or trickstabs.
We have a discord community and have full matches almost daily, organized competitive matches and new players joining daily. I know this is an apocalyptic review but this version of the game is far from dead
I bought Orange Box for Xbox360 way back in 2008, I didn't have a Steam account until like 2011. But I never really played TF2 on it, just Half Life and Portal.
It's funny, everyone who's familiar with valve has had their first encounter be from 2 different categories: Gmod/TF2, or HalfLife/Portal. While most have eventually tried games from the other group, it seems to mostly start out strictly in one of the other.
In the grand scheme of things, yes quite indeed. However I think there ought to be one or two Xbox 360s (and ONLY Xbox 360s) in someone's 2nd basement when the bomb goes boom.
@@zenolord2242 I figured so. I too like his videos, it's real random but the spurts of entertainment you get from it is good! I'm happy you like it, thanks!
I remember playing the game on xbox one from around 2017 to mid 2019. There was a relatively active community on there for quite some time, as I remember seeing at least 10-20 servers open to join nearly every time I got on, that was before a widespread bug made it where you couldn’t find servers for a while. I tried getting back into the community through the large discord that is out there but the psychotic zealots there weren’t fun to have yelling in your face.
That sucks. While that's not the case for ALL communities for old games, lots of them are full of veterans who expect you to know all the ins and outs of the game, which can be polarizing to newbies.
i didnt watch this video yet but id like to say that the xbox game is actually pretty awesome, it has a few bugs, hasnt been updated in a while, and theres not as many maps as far as im aware, but its still a great game and it runs pretty smoothly on console
Absolutely, with my brief time with it, it ran pretty smoothly! We shouldn't have to praise a port releasing with steady performance, but that isn't the standard these days, is it?
The first edition of tf2 I ever played and in a lot of ways I prefer this over the pc version. Sometimes it feels like I'm constantly on a private server with all of the different weapons and cosmetics.
I personally like that feeling, but it is a double edged sword. If you really vibe with a server, it can be really hard to find another one like it. If you don't vibe with a server, you can poof outta there and chance it at something better.
did this guy really get a backpack and glasses to dress up, so he could stage taking them off casually for the video? That is hilarious. Was it a 1-take shot, or were you putting on and taking off the coat over and over

Amazing vid, Really loved the ending lmaoo

The ultimate save haven from bots. The only negative is that there are also no players haha!
Incase you're curious;
Using a programme like Horizon, you can edit the config files of your game.
Well hot darn! I guess the key to a enjoying TF2 during the apocalypse would be to make sure your 360 is modded.

The key to enjoying TF2 during the apocalypse is having an Xbox 360 and a PC lmao
I played TF2 on Xbox 360 & i fell in love. So many good memories.
No matter what platform it was played on, TF2 really left behind an incredible legacy for many.
I just bought the orange box for the 360 great video
Thanks, welcome to the club!
You would be surprised that they only added Pyros airblast months after tf2 was released so its a note for the console version on how old the games are
That's a fat middle finger to the console ports lol.
I remember playing this every day after school on my Xbox 1 in 2018 because I didn’t have a PC but loved tf2
Wow, in 2018? That's surprisingly late to the game, kudos to you for sticking to it at that point.

It's always that extra bit special when you're playing on a hacked server in games where customization isn't really common (ie: MW2, TF2).
I miss when the orange box tf2 was active, but it died a year ago
It's is still active but there is a server glitch that makes matches not appear on console, unless your friends with the server host
It's a shame, really. Seems like there are tons of people who would still play it.
Apocalyptic Review is a great series idea and Source games are the perfect fit for it given how many of them are already in an apocalyptic state haha
Yea, it seemed like such a neat (and perhaps slightly contrived) idea, that I just had to put it together!
i miss the tf2 xbox community. i remember being a kid doing all the glitches and having fun with the modders. i remember teenagegnome and ikewitherspoon being the top dogs hahaaa
I have seen some videos of people glitching the game, and it gave me g-mod vibes. Definitely looks like it was a good time!
The classic shaders and the menu bring a tear to my eye.
Having played only the PC version prior, looks so foreign, yet it also suits the console version very well.
Please do more Apocalyptic reviews!
Will do! It'll be a lil while until the next one though, I am very slow at making these.
Ah yes, the orange box on the Xbox 360. I remember this. I loved it, it was my lifeline when I didn't have a PC. I will always hold this game close to my heart.
Sometimes, just the simplest things work.

Hey y'all, thanks!
As far as the XBox version having a pay wall to get online. It's important to remember that TF2 didn't become free to play until 2011

Nice video dude.
Thanks!
I first started playing it around 10 years ago, and barring a few exceptions, I've had more fun in the last year than I did all the years before.
nice video man. id love to see more!
Thank you! Not quite APOCALYPTIC, but I have just uploaded my next project, and it's pretty whack, looking at all of these comments.

Here before the channel blew up.
Yeyeyea!!
Definetively deserve way more subs
Thanks for the support! I have already reached 1k subs, which isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things, but to me it's pretty whack.
I bought the orange box about a year ago, I thought it was gonna be like "omg I can cross play and stuff" but no. Not at all.

You don't need an internet connection to play PC TF2. You can play offline and on LAN servers. The PC version allows you to play against bots, not a thing on console.
The requirements to play TF2 on PC are a TV, the PC and a controller. Just like on console.
No he's saying playing it for the first time requires an Internet connection for verification purposes

Honestly i bought it for early versions of games, and the hat you get in TF2 that i can brag about.
It all makes it worth it.
This should be a giant series
With all of this positive reception, it seems like a no brainer! These things take me forever to put together however :/
Everyone forgets the real daddy of hero shooters, quake team fortress
The one that started it all. The poor thing is so grandfathered, that its successor (team fortress classic) sucked up most of the credit for being the true classic.

It is kinda surprising that they didn't release a new and updated version for the current gen consoles. Discounting a few examples (Portal on switch), Valve has really been keeping it tight on PC only.

It's funny, everyone who's familiar with valve has had their first encounter be from 2 different categories: Gmod/TF2, or HalfLife/Portal. While most have eventually tried games from the other group, it seems to mostly start out strictly in one of the other.
