hmm, from my point of view in now-place in my life, i think that Thorin was right not giving his treasures to people. Yes, they killed the dragon, yes, they suffered. But its not Thorins fault. He didnt ask them to kill the dragon. He didnt ment dragon to bring harm to the citizens. Thorin lost all his people and home (and money) because of the dragon. He went bravely to return his home and treasure. It was his luck that dragon was killed. Now he's got back his home. And somebody comes and claimes something! Not as help, but demands as paying! Yes, people of Dale may ask for help, as they asked elves, and it is the choice of dwarfs to answer or not answer on their request. They are 13! only, by the way, from all of the tribe!
I respectfully disagree. I believe that Bard should get most of the money due to the fact that he is the reason Esgaroth is now safe and free from all disaster and misery. It is unfair that Bard only gets a small fraction when he is the entire reason Lake-Town is alive.
I would also say that Thorin should have given Bard and the Lakemen a share of the treasure. Without Bard, Thorin & Co would have died in the mountain days ago. And it was the dwarves (and Bilbo) that had woken the dragon after all. Giving to the elves maybe wasnt that urgent at that moment.
