Threat to Serious Feminist Issues | Christina Hoff Sommers

  • The basic rights of millions of women are being ruthlessly violated. In countries like Iran, Yemen, Egypt, and Cambodia, women are struggling for freedoms most women in the West take for granted.
But American feminists are relatively silent about these injustices-especially feminists on campus. During the 1980s, there were massive demonstrations on American college campuses against racial apartheid in South Africa. There is no remotely comparable movement on today’s campuses against the gender apartheid prevalent in large parts of the world. Why not?

She might be one of the only rational feminsts, which annoys me because she calls herself a feminist rather than humanitarian or egalitarian. The word feminist is sexist and implies women are always the ones who are worse off, rather than working towards both genders (which she does do), and calling yourself that

    • @canton7180
      @canton7180 8 років тому +1

+Lewis Birkett well technically in foreign countries women are worse off by far, I cannot take a feminist seriously if they choose to fail to acknowledge the true plight of females who truly suffer, the younger generations of American women are selfish, self absorbed, acting like 6 years olds, can't treat them equal if they choose to act and behave without any accountability.

+canton7180 i read about this,, they say women in western countries have it very bad looked at as good for nothing but sex ect,,
and when you look at their hiring practices you should know that men will get jobs before women *because* men are legally financially responsible for their families while women are not.(they are not even legally responsible for their own income..)

+Lewis Birkett I have one word for you... "epistemology". Just a shade in your remark which I globaly agree with. It is just sad "feminism" which was equivalent to "Women's right activism" at a time, has now taken such a pejorative connotation (semantics is implied). Well we could argue indeed that "modern-faintingcouch-3rdwave-radical-campus-socialjustice-oryounameit-feminism" has corrupted not only "feminism" (the original meaning and purpose of the movement) but several other concepts like "victim", "oppression" or "rape" to name but a few words which are loosing their meanings under the pressure of this contemporanean activism. I am sure you get the point and will forgive me for the addendum to your reasoning.

It seems part of the problem is intersectionality. These young feminists don’t want to criticize Muslim countries because then they would offend the Muslim activists on campuses who they’ve aligned with. So instead of protesting and bringing awareness to the situations in the Middle East and Southeast Asia and parts of Africa and standing in solidarity with the Iranian women who risked jail to take off their hijabs in public, they encouraged feminists in America to wear Hijabs in solidarity with the Muslim activists at home.
They could do a lot of good by protesting at home for the women of the Middle East to get basic human rights as they did for South Africa in the ‘80s, when those women there are finally gathering the strength to protest over there for their rights.
But you can’t reason with people who refuse to even listen to ideas they disagree with. They have shunned feminists like Christina Hoff Sommers and Camilla Paglia and think their ideas are so dangerous they can’t listen to them (and don’t want them to even have a platform to speak).
I really hate what modern feminists have become. They aren’t even effective because they’ve alienated most people from their cause.

  • @allsdownasdlkfsd

I agree with nearly everything she's saying. The one thing I take issue with is the fact that she labels a student's (possible) rape as a "petty grievance". Rape is rape. She says she's not discrediting the problems of Western women by pointing to Afghan women, but then she says that a woman who is upset about (allegedly) having been raped is being petty. Not all people who rape are found guilty. We all know that that doesn't mean a rape didn't take place.
Of course, we shouldn't point at Afghan women and say that our problems are the same. However I'm just confused as to why she discredits a Western woman's rape experience directly after saying that's not what she's doing.

Sounds like she was let our early..... Atena Farghadani (Persian: آتنا فرقدانی‎‎, born 29 January 1987) is an Iranian artist and political activist, who was imprisoned for 18 months. After publishing her artworks on Facebook, she was arrested in August 2014 and jailed for three months in Evin Prison in Tehran on charges of spreading propaganda, insulting members of parliament, and insulting the Supreme Leader of Iran. Amnesty International considers her a prisoner of conscience. She was released on 3 May 2016.
May 3, 2016 Farghadani was freed again and the charges against her were dismissed. She has expressed no intent to leave her country.

Big love to CH Sommers here. I'm a feminist and I was always warily enthusiastic about her, she has always seemed like a very reasonable and moderate voice, but almost so moderate to the point where she doesn't even seem like a feminist? Because her whole shtick to me always seemed to me to be going "chill out, sweetie" to the more strident feminists and dunking on the loonies who no-one even agrees with and have no real power in cultural discourse anyway. Like she never seemed to make that many concessions to the feminist movement. But now in this video I can see that's quite wrong.

That kind of feminism can dismiss with cultural relativism the oppression of women in Islamic countries. They think we have no right to judge Islamic countries because it's just a different culture and no culture is better than another, and it is racist to criticize them. Therefore we shouldn't worry about it.

Because feminists decided to focus on "women's issues" and not fight for all peoples (i.e. also men) they have been, are and will continue to be self-absorbed in women's issues, and with such a mindset they will continue to find "issues" anywhere and everywhere. For example: an elevator could be broken forcing all people to go up the stairs to get to their jobs, but somehow it will become the oppression of women because it's much more painful for women since they wear heals (by choice). Really?
Reminds me of how cops in Japan spend time "enforcing" small things because there are so few crimes. Like: you can't use your phone while bicycling, checking bicycle registrations, etc... People do crazy things to keep their obsolete "jobs" from being eliminated. In Japans case it's not that there shouldn't be cops, but that they shouldn't have as many.

    Until the
20th century, men and women living in villages and engaged in agriculture. 95
percent of the people could not read or write, did not vote. Almost at the same
time, men and women were given the right to go to school, to vote and to
develop their personalities. And they got those rights through the development
of science, and feminism has nothing to do with improving the lives of women
and men. Feminism is opposed to children, mothers and housewives. Feminists are
not interested in social guarantees for working mothers and affordable medicine
for pregnant women and children, pensions for housewives. Feminists want to
allowed to kill children (abortion), want to have the
right to humiliate men, housewives and mothers in the workforce. For normal women feminism has created a
lot of problems. If you believe that all people have equal rights,
regardless of health status, sex, race, education, material wealth and age. You
act for equal rights for all people, you're not a feminist. Feminists are not
interested in the rights of the disabled, the poor, the elderly. 20% women in
US, UK, Germany, Singapore are childless and single in age 45 years, in the
traditional society in age 45 years childless 3% of women (with health
    problem).

Conflating understanding one's own oppressive context (i.e. The U.S.) and that of Afghanistan or Yemen is not saying that because women in the U.S. want equity here that then negates the plight of women in other countries. The two are not separate. When we start to understand our own context and the ways in which we experience discrimination at home, then we can better come together in solidarity for other women across the world. Know yourself to better know and help others. Summers conflates a very complex and nuanced issue with an either/or binary. It's not that simple. As a professor, I see how my students are learning about very new concepts for the first time. They feel empowered, passionate and want their voices to be heard. This is how change happens. These students are learning what it means for the first time to live in a patriarchal, white male dominated society. Just like when Summers was in college, new ideas and old were likely clashing. With experience and more knowledge, usually college students start to refine their understandings of the complexity of feminism and how it converges with race and gender identity, not to mention, class, age, ability, geographic region, language, documentation status etc. I'm not sure why Summers hasn't done that kind of work, at least not that I've seen with the interviews and talks she has done. Perhaps Summers should stop dismissing women's experiences here in the US and seek partnership with them on how they can better understand and use their various forms of privilege toward change across the globe. I understand when students take it too far regarding safe spaces but that's their decision to find common ground amongst themselves on what that might look like to them. They are all different. To generalize that ALL students are whining and have no legitimate reason to protest her talks, especially when she is telling rape victims that they might have deserved it if they were drunk, is completely sexist. I would suggest she start to look at internalized sexism and see why she thinks it's ok to dismiss other women's experiences. I would also contend that as a privileged, white woman, she has many blindspots regarding who she thinks American women are exactly. She cannot nor should she speak for ALL women. To bait us against each other is actually more hurtful in the end. Focus on the change she does want to see and provide space for the women doing similar work to also share in that endeavor.

My views, this grievance feminism is akin to cancer to feminism. Thing about cancer, the cure can cause a great deal of harm to the host while it is trying to get rid of the disease. In other words, our current strong anti-feminist movement is like a form of chemo-therapy for feminism. The trick though is going to be recognizing when the cancer is finally done so that we can stop the chemo. I predict in this case it might be difficult to recognize when that time is, and that is my number one fear in what we are seeing today.
Make no mistake, grievance feminism will fall out of favor in the same way that this big anti-religious rationalist movement has risen up in the popular culture. I am just not so sure feminism as a whole will survive the experience. At the same time though, that might be a good thing. It really is about time we get a gender-neutral human rights effort in place. A gender specific one is just too susceptible to this sort of thing, a gender-neutral one that emphasizes evidence over histaria might be more robust moving forward.

Do you believe that all men in the world agree with what happened to this young Irainian artist? The majority of men would not support that and would stand up against it, and this is why I see it is hypocrassy on the part of the feminist movement to blame and attack all men for these things or for discrimination against women. There are evil men in the world but there are more good men in the world. So when I see organizations such as the UN, FAO, UNESCO, and many governments in the world supporting the unspeakable actions to strengthen women and ignore men I am tempted to believe that this has a wicked secret evil agenda in the world to demasculinate men and this will be fatal for the human race. Just remember my word today and mark it down. If someone does not stop it there will be problems. In fact in many parts of the world like in the caribbean, aeurope and many other countries some women and young ladies are already complaining about the quality of their young men. Individually, under normal conditions women like men to be men.
