      If your simply just drawing random shapes and not planning on any specific thing that your making, use pen or marker and you may end up liking it so you can refine it later in pencil and other media.

    This is my little sketchbook tip/ a thing I do; lately I've been taking a a sheet of paper bigger then my sketchbook page and sketch, draw and doodle on that sheet and then glue that on my sketchbook. I've been doing this because I'm near the end of my sketchbook and I'm trying to extend it's life. I noticed that sometimes it let's me draw more loosely. It also adds a bit more life to the thing.

    I've never thought about adding to sketchbook pages over time like that (your first hint about filling blanks on previous pages etc), but i love the idea, especially because my mind doesn't really work on "working on a piece in multiple sessions" (i think this is a problem more people are having). I'd love to train myself to work on pieces of art more than just in one sitting lol. Train the upkeep of elongated focus (not my first language, i can't find the fitting words for this right now lol)

    I used to feel pressure to make my sketchbook “UA-cam ready” and thought everything had to look like a calarts admission sketchbook and it really started hindering my creativity and growth as a sketchbook is a place to be free and let loose and not need to be fully rendered pages/art.
    I also would feel even more so about the art in my sketchbook if they were pricey. Once I stopped comparing myself and putting an unnecessary amount of pressure on what I created, it was and still is such an invigorating and freeing feeling. Expensive or inexpensive it’s simply just paper and paper shouldn’t stay blank.
    :)

    Love the advice from this video, it really spoke to me. But one thing is really bothering me....
    Jel, have you heard of a game called Bugsnax? Charming little game, worth looking into, but the style of the bugsnax is EXACTLY like how you drew these bugs here. Like, that pillbug has a bunger's face.
    Thank you, anyone who reads this. I just had to make it known. I love bugsnax, and seeing the bugs here made me go feral lmao

    Definitely an issue to have a messy and clean sketchbook, especially if you’re a beginner. Don’t do it unless you accept that on some days you will draw something really nice in your “bad” sketchbook and then in your “good” sketchbook you will occasionally draw something terrible. Got to alway be open to the process. Really a “perfect” sketchbook is really unnecessary when learning, unless your goal is to create a sketchbook filled with finished pieces or an entire theme or something. But finished and “perfect” pieces are also very different from one another~

    • @Melvito2
      @Melvito2 9 місяців тому +8

      I think a distinction needs to be made between art books and sketchbooks. Art books are meant to be seen with finished pieces, sketchbooks are meant to be fun, free, experimental, sometimes great, sometimes bad, sometimes inspired, sometimes silly. I recently heard that a sketchbook is not meant to be seen by anyone other than the artist and it really made me start going through my sketchbook pile and giving them the use they deserve.

    • @devALLjapan
      @devALLjapan 9 місяців тому +2

      @@Melvito2 Yes, when I start over focussing on "oh no am I going to show this to anyone I don't want to draw anything dumb!" I look through old sketchbooks to inspire me by my own journey~

  • @fuzzydragons

    and there is a stupid fly on the monitor while you draw bugs lol
    i sometimes draw the same things over and over again, could be pages of one thing, in college a whole sketchbook could be devoted to one subject. the more you explore a subject, the better 🙂

    Remember y’all, there is no such thing as a perfect sketchbook! You might draw something you don’t like and that’s okay! Just use sticky notes to cover it up (if you really want to hide the drawing)
