Hey, Mike! I loved this video. Have you considered starting a S/W2 channel? This is the type of video that'd be perfect for a second channel. More behind the scenes and unscripted, update videos. It will raise engagement and give you another channel to post more free form videos.
I finish work for the week. I go to the gym. I get home and sit down with a brotein shake and Mike's uploaded a new video on developing his Honda-swapped Ferrari racecar. What a great start to the weekend.
what exactly is in a "brotein" shake?
Yesss except me I went mountain biking and drinking a beer 😂
@@actschp1 it's a protein shake for the most bro of gym bro.
Great episode. Nice to hear you recovered from the VID, keep these video’s coming plz.
@@midlifecarsis6420 so you're saying it has a lot of sperm in it...dude
Don't stress about a video being perfect every time. Working on cars goes south sometimes. Its just part of the game!
Perfection is the enemy of good enough, both for video production and exhaust fabrication!
Fact is you can make this 90% the same at 20% of the time.
Some people force UA-cam like a square peg into a round hole. They eventually find a way to make it entertaining or at least digestible. Even the biggest channels can be cringey at times. This whole platform is exactly where you belong man. No matter what the content it’s always a vibe. Thanks man.
glad to see that even in a "don't get it right just get it running" sort of video you still manage to focus on small aesthetic details like the angle of the pipes out the back
The exhaust is just the next iteration of mikes battle with control arms 😂
I’m sure I can speak for most of your viewers when I say, we don’t care what type of video you put out, we just love your content. All of it. Keep up the good work and we’re looking forward to the next vid. 👌🏼
Regarding your welding at around 17:00 going bad; do you have plenty of vents opposite your purge feed? If you dont adequately vent your purge it can sometimes push through the gap exactly where your welding and push your torch gas back causing oxidisation as it effectively builds pressure up inside the part.
Good point. Either that or the material has heat soaked. I find you need to pause and allow it to cool off periodically if the butts are close together.
Your definition of "thrash to meet a race date" is so different from my old definition of ""thrash to meet a race date" and I thought I was picky. LOVE this build, though.
Less polish is fine imo for the 244 at this point; we're now in the race car shit portion of the build where you'll be constantly breaking, fixing, and breaking again. Less polish both shows more of what goes into that struggle while also giving you more free time to work to get back on track quicker.
Besides, us in the know know that the next project will absolutely get that cinema level quality documentation it deserves. It'll let you have one build getting the SW special and one build showing the down and dirty side of racing and repair.
Erm... cutting an exhaust pipe square is easy! Get a piece of A4 paper - put it around the tube and align it making sure the edges lines up perfectly. Tape it in place and the edge will be square to the tube.
"Those welds SUCK. My cousin's uncle's dog's groomer used to work at NASA and could weld better in his sleep" said no one ever in these comments. 🥴
Hey, don't apologize for being a perfectionist. Those little details that no one will notice on upon first glance are the good stuff. 😁
When editing, please set your lapel mic from mono left-channel only to stereo so that I don't only hear you from my left ear, thanks much!
I'm glad I'm not the only one! I thought I was going insane 😂
Love your work as always.
Cable hanging over the sander.... 22:25 😬
Hands down my favorite channel for car content!
Any updates are great updates keep em comin
Hi Mike, I follow a tech channel from the Netherlands, which posts a video every (!) day, they don't care about perfection but thy guy give me a laugh or a very interesting tech talk about technical issues I could get to. So don't blame your quality of your work, because a lot of people will learn a lot of it and so do I! Grtz Eric from Holland!
Great video and great format and content!! Can’t wait for Laguna!!!!
I appreciate how you are able to accept that some things will drive you crazy later... and do the work now.... and sleep better. I'm pretty blown away by your relentless pursuit of getting things as right as right can be. My ASD thing makes achieving anything near your level of build perfection impossible... very inspirational. Cheers.
It doesn't, you just don't have ocd in addition
@@Low760 Thank you very much for your absolutely non informed rubbish medical analysis.
Love the progress. And no worries - not every episode has to be a complete, "lived happily ever after," ending. This shows the rest of us backyard mechanics that the process is the same the world over.
I can't speak for everyone, but for me, the journey is the destination. This is just as good as any episode with a pretty bow on it at the end. Getting to see the work getting done is the fun part. Or put in the terms of one of the best BMW ad lines ever (or any car ad, for that matter) "Happiness isn't around the corner. Happiness *is* the corner."
Also, sorry to hear you got COVID. Props for putting out an episode even while you are under the weather. Feel better soon, Mike!
Like the biosphere.
was watching WTAC the other night, had a bunch of people looking for ya heh. had to tell them you where still swapping the k24 out for k20 and haven't seen a video out in a minute. glad to see your honna be at laguna seca tho
Should have stayed with K24. Use a shorter stroke crank and longer rods. Solves piston speed problem and better rod to stroke ratio takes stress off of main journal bearings and piston side loads. Also wouldn't have to fab up a bunch of new stuff for engine dimensional changes. Just my two cents. But yeah, taller deck, longer rods, shorter stroke crank equals less stressed engine.
The engine has a massive brace holding all that down. You ever put one together? They basically have a two piece head with a massive brace. The most recent vid I’ve seen with this is from doughnut building a civic with K swap.
More of these episodes please! It's just as enjoyable to watch, but now we can see the in-between steps as well! Love your work, Mike !!!
Why not put a K20 crank in a K24 and fit longer rods to result in a 'tall' K20 that is the same height as a K24?
Really reminds me of a totally unconnected video I saw about Andrew Reynolds (Pro Skateboarder) and "The Madness". Where you are striving, chasing for that sense of perfection. Down to every minutia. Be it the angle your fore arm takes when landing a trick, or the angle of an exhaust pipe. Such is when you have the mind of an artist. Well done Mike.
Good machinists are such a blessing.
And evidently very old.
this is really fun. the polished eps are great, but this feels more immersive
Another good episode, thanks. On the exhaust tips, personally I would have put on a slight slash cut so the tip face matches the angle of the rear valance.
Any time I haven’t welded in a while I grab some scrap of what I’m using and lay some beads down to get the feel back. Just did this with some aluminum and it gave me a chance to remember how to and how not to weld it, since I rarely ever do.
Oil can impregnate into the metal from the lathe process if not cleaned enough along with the stone used for deburring. normally something like that is related to not cleaning the foreign material out completely
As someone who is addicted to tweaking details myself, I think I liked this just as much as the other formats.
Love the fancy, polished story telling eps but equally love these more raw progress videos too - big value in both!
Glad to you see back brotha
Watching you weld is relaxing. Keep up the good work.
Loved this content. Been a sub since the start of the Ferrari build. Can't wait any longer...... what's the next big build, been teasing us long enough.
Great video guy. I’m not bothered about polished videos. I’m a tech content geek. It’s why I love Rob Dahm, with his mix of filming and best of all; signature lack of outro.
Regards the welding it’s possible the material got too hot. Especially if you welded the butt next to it immediately prior to that one with not enough cool down time in between. I tend to weld an inch, let it cool, weld an inch until I’ve completed a butt, then move to the other end somewhere to allow the heat dissipate from the area I’ve just welded. I’m not an exhaust specialist, but I’ve served time in the trade.
Someone else suggested too much pressure within the pipe due to inadequate purge feed. Also possible. If you combine that with hot gas trying to escape in the vicinity it could also have contributed.
Either way, there’s no substitute for experience. These are all lessons on the way to improving your skills. Great job 👍
I speak for some maybe when I say, we are here to witness what you are up to. Being honest is rad, I don’t watch “crash porn” type content but honest is honest. Keep up the amazing work duder.
I like the new format.
It’s more raw and pure.
This is not network TV.
I watch UA-cam because it’s different.
Keep up the good work Mike.
Love the work in progress videos.
My bet for the weld contamination is from the cutting oil used on the lathe. That stuff will seep into any invisible porosity and is super difficult to remove without baking or vapor degreasing
I like this level of detail on videos, really shows the struggle and craftsmanship that goes into getting things right.
As always great video! As far as Laguna Seca goes, they are super strict about noise. Have a plan B if your too loud going in to save headache and heartache.
Love the raw fabrication! For those who can't afford the tools or the space to work on such project is like living trough your builds, thanks for the great content. You're rocking it!
Nice to see this car back!!
I love all the episodes, whatever format. Seeing progress on the Ferrari or Audi or anything else is cool. Keep up the great work.
Mike,
keep up the good work! i hope that you feel better soon
Great stuff mate. Hope you get the beast done in time.
Update ep is a good format.
Nice job 👌
I appreciate your attention to detail and willingness to spend the extra effort when you feel it’s important, but allow yourself some slack. Race cars should constantly evolve and get back on track. Save that time for the next project where the form is more the function. This car is rad cause it’s built to rip. Just happens to look stunning doing it.
Great video and as someone who is trying to recover from covid right now, I already know it's gunna be a slog for a while. Excited to see your build out at Laguna - you'll have a great time there.
Always love spending time with the OGs. The stories and the lessons are priceless.
More relaxed format works for me - Thanks Mike
Solid video! Liked the format.
Well done for pushing out some content! Look after yourself and good luck getting everything together! Cannot wait to see how it all comes together.
Nope, keep putting these out there occasionally. Its still great to watch.
Dude, all of your videos are worth watching, they all worth our time ! There's always something to learn from it. Keep up the great work !
Everything you put out there is great! Sometimes life gives you time to polish the product, sometimes it doesn't. We've all been there on some project. Thanks for bringing us along for the journey. I'll be right here when the next video drops.
always happy with your content mike.
I’m always surprised when I see this channels number of subscribers…really deserves 10x what it has given the quality of content and work
Great vid. Can't wait to see it back on track mate
I appreciate your honesty and ability to take on projects and make it happen! You are providing real entertainment and education...Thanks.
Love this thing. Can't wait to hear it running!
This episode must've been... Exhausting
Keep sharing the nitty-gritty down in the trenches content. It is easy to relate to, cuz we all take the same types of paths to getting stuff done 😊
Good to see you working in the shop bro! Sucks to hear ya got covid... Can't wait to see the 308 rippin again!
10:00 I know this is in the middle of a segment where you're literally nitpicking the exhaust, but... have you considered that your exhaust pipes are now your rear bumper, and are attached directly to your turbocharger?
Something to consider for any later work, since the turbo housing is both hot and full of oil this feels like a fire safety consideration.
Thanks for putting this out even when you were obviously feeling terrible. I can imagine how much more difficult it must have been to deal with the exhaust.
Looking good, I can't wait to see it running again, I'm thinking that K20 is going to be the right prescription for that car
I've liked every format that you've delivered 😃 Just make whatever you want to make, and it's going to be one of the best things on UA-cam!
Just discovered your channel and I'm loving it, your K20 Ferrari it sick. I'd love to put a K20 in my R50 Mini
Good job. Im here for the car building episodes, warts and all
This video was just as entertaining as every other one you put out. If anything it's nice to see the format change a little here and there just to keep things fresh. So as long as you're doing great work on the cars the videos will be great as well. Looking forward to the next one as always.
Your obliviousness to obstacles is both absurd and inspiring. Spending 3 years building a 6 figure Ferrari time trial “durable” race car that blows a tranny on its first full event and blows an engine at its second. And you have only done 2 events in and maybe 25 laps total in that car. Now I don’t feel so bad about spending 10k on my TT beater that at least works.
Great video... "a bit of a perfectionist" is an understatement... lovely to watch as always...
Add a v band to the exhaust tip for Laguna and make a turn down that can be rotated away from the decibel meter between turn 5-6 on the right side.
I feel you, Ive missed nearly every event, track day, rally, weekend cruise, and many other events I wanted to do this year -- and I dont even have a bananas ferrari race car to show for it.
To be fair neither does this guy. He has a roller chassis for like 3 years that was a racecar for like 5 &1/2 laps.
Please just upload videos. Definitely one of my favorite UA-camrs! Thanks for the content Mike
Keep the episodes rolling. Finishing this car means more on-track content and new car videos which means new car control arm content. I expect at least 3 new episodes on the next set of control arms.
Ahh, finally the video I was expecting. I was laughing at the last video with my wife 'cuz I knew what was coming up with the change in deck height.
Another great video 😎
I don't think the format matter much IMO. It's just enjoyable seeing this come back together and some of the details involved in planning/fabrication.
Just seeing the cars and the progress is good. Don’t stress, toss the content out and see what sticks. Less stress more fun.
Always enjoy the catch-up - its my Friday afternoon highlight!
Doing great, its a crazy machine, it will be utterly unique when its done. Good to see the bits and pieces coming together
I’d say you’ve done a nice job of the story telling over the years to get it to this point, now I just want to see it done, running and sorted out on the track. Do what ya gotta do.
Really liking this episode Mike
I prefer to hear from you more often. A little weld, a little grind, its all great content. Thank you!
Welding at about 17:00, you probably had a cross breeze or your torch angle got too acute, then it acts like a venturi and draws a layer of air across the top of the weld.
When welding aluminum have you considered using thicker rod? You can typically go a little faster which will mean less heat soak. And not sure what tungsten you're using... while people typically use 0% I've had good results with Lanthanated and zircionated. Give it a whirl, but at least try a thicker rod.
Always like any video! Keep everything coming. Heck just go live anytime
Good work Mike
Always entertaining and motivating. Always look forward to your progress
This was a really fun episode! I don't revel in any setbacks, but it's good to know they happen to everyone. ;) The E30 is running great!
Nice work, I enjoy watching your thought process.
Prefer to see the build / thought process … was a good episode 👍
Show me the work. always feels like you're learning when it's a process like this
My tail pipes MUST be the same degree and be true but my charge pipe was boogered up, so I patched a hole but that's OK. It's a race car and race cars are not perfect; they just work perfectly! About the format.... We just want episodes of the projects. We get that you're not Zak Snyder and this isn't a trilogy. you don't have to be perfect to give us something perfect, your content speaks for itself! I love watching whatever you have. Even that techy nerd stuff was cool.
Probably too late at this point to do this, but swapping a k20 crank into a k24 block with custom connecting rods (158.5mm) would let you keep the parts you have on the car now. You also get the benefits of a higher rod ratio which would reduce the lateral forces of the piston against the cylinder walls at high rpm; improving overall reliability. Just something to think about..
Thank you for dropping a video!
