Hi John...I use Laguna frost clay. I have attempted two plates on a plaster bat, and both cracked. Oddly enough they were not 'S' cracks. The cracks were not in the middle. rather long linear cracks offcenter. I was hoping the plates would release from the plaster bat. Ultimately, both did, but both had cracks. I purchased the plaster of paris from Lowes. Do you have any ideas as to what could have caused this?
in your down and dirty plaster mold video, you talk about making the plaster thick, to make it stronger, i ASSuME you make a thick blend before pouring that in the mold? and another assumption is pottery plaster? thanks for the videos.
Great vid John. Do you let your porcelain plates get past leather hard then trim it??? Just want to know because it just seems like when I work with porcelain it just loves to cave on it when I try to trim it :(.
Great video,John. Love the plate. But when you bisque them, do you stack them with the plates touching, or do you have rows and rows on shelves separated by little kiln posts?
Hey John- I re-visited this wonderful video and I honestly thought this video was longer than it is now. Didn't you show how to throw the whole plate? It stops on my end as you take the tool out to compress the bottom. Am I thinking wrong?
Have you had any problems with the large and flat clay body cracking when you're drying it? Do you do anything to the clay before throwing it; such as running it through a pug mill?
Hello John, I am about to purchase the 15” dinner plate and the large quick release. Do I have to purchase the adapter as well? Do I have to purchase two quick release so that I can glue one to one of my bats? Pray tell.
Hey John, thanks for this video. I've got a bag of USG hydrostone plaster, and am wondering what are your thoughts of using that instead of #1 potters plaster? The batts would be less prone to breakage, but less absorbent.
Sorry John... I re-loaded and it's over 7 min. It was not playing but just over 2 min before. Freaky UA-cam I guess... sorry to bother ya! Thanks for this video by the way... really good one!
Thanks, John. I ordered the molds from Shiela today, and told her it was because of this video. I appreciate your tips and encouragement. -Rick
By thick I mean add more plaster to water. Usually people weight it. That makes it less porous and stronger. I just use #1 pottery plaster.
I love your work very much.
John Bitt... thanks for your informative & well presented video...
Thumbs up, just for that smile at the end 🤠
AWESOME Video!!!
They are definitely leather hard when trimmed. I usually let them pop off the bat and then turn them over for a day or so and then trim.

4:35 what a beautiful glaze. Looks like a satin Robin's egg. Is that glaze in one of your books?
Sam's Satin Celadon cone 10 reduction

Thanks for the video. How much clay do you use for the dinner plates?
I am from Brazil and here we don’t have this plastic mold, can you send me the link where can I buy it?

Mirroxaphene That is why you use plaster to help it dry evenly and not crack. I wedge the clay...think I say all that in the video?

Have you ever made a plate mold? If so, could you do an instructional video on that?

What trimming tools do you use/recommend ?

Thanks. Good luck!
Can you use plaster of paris plaster??
You can but more fragile.
How long did you wait before you were able to release the plaster out from the mold?
One or two days depending on humidity
