    I think part of your problem is that you used VARNISH instead of matte MEDIUM. Varnish would go on top after, but the medium works for the toothiness to work with it. I use mine with an airbrush but it also works painting it on. Package says 25% water. Hope this helps! Love your face ups

      @BirdsAndWhales 5 років тому +31

      Good point... but does using the matte medium make it shiny in the end? Because I’m comfortable using acrylic paints instead of pencils if I have to I just really don’t want a shiny finish, any tips?😊

    • @InnocentGuillotine
      @InnocentGuillotine 5 років тому +17

      Holly Rusher It will almost certainly be shinier when dabbed/painted on than applied with an airbrush, just because the application method leaves it less... bumpy, for lack of a better phrasing. There's a less even refraction from many tiny drops forming a coat versus a sponged on coat.

    I used to work at HobbyTown USA, here in Charleston, and I would recommend calling ahead to make sure that your local store has it before coming in. The website almost never has what the store does and vice-versa. Also, remember that they will order anything that they can get their hands on, for you. And ordering it through them typically doesn't cost extra :)

      Hi Maddie, is it also possible to do "fixation" layers in between and apply the Liquitex with a sponge or pencil without the pencils coming off? Or would I need something else for that and for the final fixation? Thank you for sharing your experience! It's so helpful

  • @DarkArt888
    @DarkArt888 7 років тому +86

    Varnishes only do well as a way of putting a final seal on the doll's faceup. Try using a matt medium next time to seal your doll's bare face, and you'll find you'll get that tooth and texture you need to do faceups, and just use the vanish to seal it all in! Good luck!

    Hey there! We live in Pennsylvania and have no MSC anywhere, So we got Matte Varnish. We're starting up our first 3 dolls. But had not started with the faces. We don't even have the proper sealant at the stores. All we have is Krylon and they have Aceton in it. Weird ingredient choice for a "Sealant".
    So in the mean time, We used glitter glue and surprisingly, It kept the paint and pastels on the doll's body very well. Yeah, It's alittle stiff in the joints, But it works well... so far. It's a good back up sealant when you don't have the big tools. Wonder if it works well with Watercolor pencils? Well, The glue when dried is rough some how...
    We could be wrong. So Don't yell at us! We have very little allowance and it's hard to find the right sealant (And Dolls) these days. It's all we have!

      I was looking at the sealants they have in my local workshop. I'm curious as to how the Warhammer and Humbrol (?) seals work on dolls. I'm assuming they'll be different types of plastic so one type of paint and seals might work for one but not the other?

    I use another spray sealant (I think it's duracote or something) that used for model cars in most of my face ups, it's cheaper, easily affordable and does all the same stuff as Msc for me. plus it removes easily with alcohol. So if anyone in the states has a hobby lobby near by I'd suggest giving it a try.

    I come from the future to tell you I found a spray matte varnish that doesn't react weirdly with the vinyl. I honestly didn't have much hope on it, but since I'm a newbie and MSC and Liquitex varnish are kinda expensive here, I gave it a try. Best thing out of all is that it's actually very cheap.

    I really like this face up, it's a nice change from the MSC heavy versions I see around.
    I work mostly on action figures rather than fashion dolls, but I confront similar issues with tooth and sealing, and I usually use mostly really fine sandpaper and translucent acrylic enamel paint for most of my work. I've yet to figure out a real "tried and true" method that works 100% of the time for me, so seeing all these alternatives is really refreshing and gives me LOTS of ideas.

    I know this is an old video, but I just want to say that it's really nice to see folks looking for cheaper, safer alternatives that are more readily available to a larger array of users. I don't do doll customizing, rather, I repaint action figures and Gunpla in my spare time, but the Mister line is still highly prevalent and there's a lot of back and forth about consistent quality over time vs the toxicity and availability.
    This might not work as well on a vinyl doll, but when I was working on my Siege Megatron, I used a Krylon spray acrylic matte top coat that work spectacularly for providing a very flat finish that had a subtle tooth not unlike very fine sketch paper. It allowed me to utilize some very nice dry brushing techniques I was having trouble with before sealing, and it's definitely something I'm going to keep using for future projects. There's also the option of using products like Mod Podge, but that can be argued to be a non-archival finish due to the fact that you can reactivate Mod Podge with sufficient water exposure, so using the material would depend heavily on your intended use of the figure.
    In any case, good job on this repaint, Rochelle looks super cute!

    • @KymeraBJD
      @KymeraBJD 7 років тому +10

      Cloud King I think a lot of the shinyness and lack of tooth is caused by the sponge/brush application - you're applying thicker layers in general. Even MSC will get shiny if you overspray. Much of the tooth comes from how the sealant is atomized when sprayed from an airbrush or can.

    • @ZangelDemon

    I don't have access to MSC so I have tried several different sealants to work with watercolour pencils. Matt varnish -no. Fixative -no. Matt lacquer -kinda but gives shiny and bumpy skin. So I use acrylic paints but it hasn't occurred to me to use sealant with them. I have to try this watered down technique! Thank you for sharing this experiment!
