As an Algonquin and Mohawk First Nations Tribe descendent, I found nothing "insulting" about the wendigo, she was actually very representative of how the wendigo looked in legend and you added your own Dollighful touches (cutesy)! Who's here after she announced she's taking down her Wendigo video? I haven't been able to do much research on the issue because most of her sources aren't free. It was by far my favourite Halloween doll, but I understand her decision. I don't know much about Native American culture but if they find it offensive it's only fair that that's respected. I don't like when missinformation is spread about my culture and beliefs so... I'll try to further inform myself on what exactly the issue was, since I don't quite understand it. Someone got any thoughts on the situation?

I'm just trying to understand why this happened. Can someone please explain it to me? Was the doll offensive or wasn't representing the Native American culture right? I don't understand.

The probelm seems to be in how the media in general has treated the wendigo and (by extention) how she represented it. The wendigo is different from a vampire or werewolf in that it is very closely connected with Native American religion and traditions, not just in the past but in a lot of their present religious beliefs. A lot of games, movies, books, etc, have used the wendigo as a run of the mill monster, changing a lot of elements and simplifying others in order to make it more animalistic and wild. This comes off as an innacurate version of the values that the wendigo originally represented, such as greed or selfishness. This creature was meant as a warning against morally corrupt behaviour and not just a plain monster. It's not just in the more abstract way that the wendigo has been changed by western pop culture, but in the physical as well. For what I've gathered, the wendigo didn't have antlers or fur and it much more closely resembled a human.
Now, I didn't see any backlash in Dollightful's video, however the increasing amount of content that had this version of the wendigo has made some Native American communities speak up. The thing is, Native American culture hasn't been respected at all in history, so now a days a lot of people are trying to fix that and come to a better mutual understanding. It's likely that Dollightful didn't want to be part of the misrepresentation of their culture. I really think it was more of her trying to make the right decision and not because people complaining (which again I didn't see any of).
CONCLUSION: She took down the video because she didn't want to be part of the trend in which an important part of Native American religion is represented as something wild and uncivilised. At least, that's what I've gathered by researching at the best of my abilities. Hope this helped out!

@@ailemasvega THANK YOU!! This is beautifully expressed, and makes a lot of sense. I honestly wish Katherine had gone more into the critiques she was receiving and how she came to her decision, rather than a (very good) apology with no background that left most of us simply scratching our heads.

Its' probably because I'm a Folklorist, but I totally expected you to go with deep red hair and a dark green dress, because that's how the Banshee was most often portrayed in Irish myth an folklore, but I think for your style she came out pretty awesome either way. :D

Very true! But If I'm not mistaken the old woman version were usually seen washing the clothes of the soon to die in the river. The flying around screaming version were most often (if I'm not mistaken, anyway. Not trying to debate anything here ) were redheads. :)

I love her too, but the doll was completely inaccurate to how it was depicted in Native American mythology. Originally, it never actually looked like a deer and was completely hairless. She’s still a beautiful doll, but it wouldn’t be right to keep the video up. Katherine made the right choice.

As much as I adore your super beautiful and cute other dolls, I love this and the wendigo. They're my favourite dolls that you've made, and I would love to see you do more frightening creatures. Since you have Celtic and Native American lore, perhaps look into European ones? There are a lot of very awesome mythical terrors in Scandinavia, as well as tamer, cuter ones, and Baba Yaga from Slavic lore would also be interesting to see you do.

They will play with the Halloween decoration and probably demolish the Christmas tree in two months time. All cats I have had before have been fairly well behaved around the tree, but these two sisters we have now are crazy. On a different note, I love that doll. I think it is my favourite of all the dolls in the collab, but then again you are my favourite doll artist on youtube! Always so imaginative with your dolls.
Decorations are always tempting for energetic kitties! I usually get a few extras of the decorations (spiders, in this case) for them to bat around. Good luck with the Christmas situation. Thank you for watching! :D

Even 5 years later, this is still one of my favorite dollightful dolls. So elegant and simple, but deeply eerie. You can really feel the devastation on the dolls face
Her face makes her look sweet and Innocent, but hurt (I still absolutely love this doll I thought I might point that out only so that you could do something different with other dolls)
When she showed all the customs my eyes immediately went to the banshee because everyone else’s are darker colours and hers is all white and it caught my eye

As someone who ADORES like creepy and horror stuff but is hella scared like it would come after me irl this was beautifully made.
I love this video so much, but something absolutely adorable I noticed was that Eevee was dressed up as Galceon for her costume. So cute. Also I find it simply stupendous that your dolls can convey so many different emotions even with a painted on face.

Wendigo is definitely creepier, but I do love the banshee. Have you considered doing a zombie, with a detached jaw or something? I got the idea from this doll because of the way you modified her face.
