    Hi Sean! great content and tutorials ❤.
    After watching the two videos on LED mapping and slices, I wonder how to decipher the pixel map layout on the Novastar if they didn't give me the pixelmap. Let's say I know the size of 4 LED screens, typically a main screen, one below the DJ, and two on the sides. If I was not given a pixelmap, how do I know how to position the slices in the resolume output? Would I have to have access to the Novastar settings? there could I see the layout of the screens? I hope you can help me, I really can't find an answer on the internet. thanks and greetings from Argentina

    Amazing Video! Question, I would like to map a somewhat "O" out of LED screens, how can I mask the middle of the"O" being that it would be empty?

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  Рік тому +1

      Check the mask settings and try flipping the Invert checkbox. You may need two masks, one to form the outside of the 0 and one to knock out the center hole. Remember that order matters, so move them around until it works properly. Testing it out now, this is what works for me using output masks: set the small hole mask on top, with invert unchecked. Under that, the larger circle mask with invert checked, and under that, the slice(s) you want to mask. Hope that helps!

    Hi sean, I have a question! What are the key considerations and best practices for planning visuals and achieving precise measurements when integrating a large LED screen with the human body for an interactive dance performance? How can we ensure that the visuals seamlessly complement the performers' movements and enhance the overall audience experience?

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  8 місяців тому

      Interesting question. First, get the physical specs for the screen dimensions in feet or meters, as well as the pixel dimensions, then you can get a good idea of the physical size of things you are designing digitally. Then, creating some sort of pre-visualization environment to test your ideas as you create them is helpful. This is a mockup of the stage with a human reference, all to scale, to test your ideas. You can do this type of thing in after effects, or in a tool designed for it like depence, or in a realtime creation tool like notch or unreal as kind of a middle ground. Using realtime tools for the entire workflow could be helpful as they can be very flexible and adjustable, but this is also possible with rendered content and planning and choreography. Scheduling rehearsal time and time for changes is important in this type of project. Lastly, creating your assets with some breathing room, and utilizing layers with alpha that don't break the edge of the render for key elements that need to align, so that you can rescale and reposition them easily onsite when things inevitably change last minute lol.

  • @edneale1187
    @edneale1187 Рік тому

    Hi Sean,
    What is the benefit of rearranging the output map to 'save space'? Also what is the benefit of applying a mask to the input map slices if the screen won't pick up the extra content anyway?

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  Рік тому +2

      Sometimes you need to rearrange them so that they all fit within the canvas of the processor, which is usually a standard video size like 1920x1080. In this case our total width is too wide to fit within that size if we arrange them as they are in reality.
      Regarding the mask: The screen will see the extra content. LED tiles are rectangular so to make curves you need to use masks.

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  Рік тому

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  8 місяців тому

      Nova is how you map the LED processor to set up the screens. The mapping in Nova is the Output Map pixel map you reference in resolume. Resolume is used to map the content to that pixelmap using the input map and the output map. For simple screens you may not be doing much, but for complex screens it is essential

    Hey Sean, thank you for these videos. Want to know few things from the physical, routing side of things.
    Each slice is routed to an independent “processor” for each screen?? Does each screen has its own processor/send card and if yes, this goes without saying but, the “scaler” on the processor is not used, correct?
    It would be awesome if you can make a video going over how the output from your computer is routed and where are they connected
    Thank again!!

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  Рік тому +3

      Hey Dennis, each slice is not usually an individual processor. You can have several 'slices' per 'screen' in Resolume's advanced output, and each Screen is assigned an output on the VJ Computer, which goes to a processor. What happens after that depends on the capacity of your processor and its outputs, and how it can handle the amount pixels contained in the cabinets you are using. You are correct that you should not use the scaler on the processor because we are doing pixel to pixel mapping with our Advanced Output in Resolume. I have plans to make some content about what happens between the computer and the LED wall soon!

    • @dennispatel6639
      @dennispatel6639 Рік тому

      Hey @@SeanBowes Thank you for breaking that down. I Confused myself a little there. I relaize where the slice sits in the "output tabe" doesnt dictate whats on that slice. The location of the slice in the "input tabe" does. I am just having a hard time imagining how this screen is wired. IDK.
      I just need to play around more with slices. Most of my work consist of deploying standard 16:9 format screen or very close to that. We use a scaler to fit the output from the screen and thats about it.
      Hey i want to thank you agian for your Time, Effort and Engery in creating these videos. They are very helpful to god knows how many people.

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  Рік тому

      Thats exactly right. Input samples the content, Output re-arranges it to what the processor is looking for, which is communicated by creating a Pixel Map image. The wiring is a whole other thing that I can hopefully get into with a Novastar Basics type of video soon.
      Scaler totally works in those scenarios where you are just fitting 16:9 to a nearly 16:9 wall. Props to you for expanding your knowledge to be ready for other scenarios! Great questions too, thanks for asking for clarification.

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  13 днів тому

      Yes that is correct, this is the step that happens in the media server (resolume) to prepare output for what the processor is looking for. I have had a video about programming in novastar for a while, but that isnt the part of the process I am usually involved with so it has been difficult to coordinate all of the things I need to make a proper video. I have got this question a few times though so I will work on making it happen! Thanks for the suggestion!

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  Рік тому

      Hey! Yeah so follow the instructions on this video - first setting up the slices in the output map to match the pixel width and height of the screens. Then on the input side adjust them to match the physical arrangement of the screens in real life. This will mean that the 6mm wall will probably need to be scaled up because it’s pixels are spaced further apart and therefore relatively larger in physical space. You can use math to scale it up proportionately, and then always check and adjust it by eye on site so that it looks correct.

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  Рік тому

      If you have your advanced output Input and Output maps set up properly, and you have assigned your Screen to a Display in Advanced Output, you should see something on screen.
      If you see nothing, there may be a connection issue between you , the processor, and the wall.
      If you see your output but it is not looking correct, that means something is wrong about your mapping and your slices are in the wrong position compared to what the LED processor is looking for. You can tell if this is the case because you see some of your slices but they are not lined up perfectly.
      You may also have Scaling on in the LED processor which makes changes to what you send it before it sends it to the wall. This makes it look like your output map is squished or stretched on the wall. so check out the settings for your processor and see if thats the issue.
      Sometimes using the Test Pattern (Output>Show Test Card) Can help you see what is wrong.

      The process is quite similar. You need Resolume Arena to do it. Set up your two projectors so that they overlap a little, set up your two slices so that they are arranged and overlapping in the same way. On the input side, arrange those two side-by-side slices over your video content. You can use edge blending on the slices if you need to soften the seam a bit. Look up Resolume Edge Blending, there are good tutorials out there about this process and resolume has a section in their manual about it.

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  2 роки тому

      Great question. Yes, your Output size should match your Pixel map size. This is usually a standard video signal dimension like 640x480, 1280x720, 1280x800, 1920x1080, or 3840x2160. Something like that. Your input and composition size can be different than your output size in order to fit all of the slices in their 'physical' arrangement and does not need to be a standard ratio if you don't want it to be.

    Hi Sean. What can I do if of an event they do not send me an output guide like the one you use at minute 2:00? To be more specific I will have to do everything and will not send me the guide! I read that video processors take the top left part to minimizing the sending of data, then there is a tool to assign the slices to the top left part in the most efficient way in the output? Or can I move the slices freely in the output but towards the top left part to minimizing the data sending?

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  Рік тому +2

      If there is an LED tech who set up the wall, but will not give you the pixel map, you will have to use trial and error on site to figure it out. Plug in, see what size the output is, and Move and scale slices until they fill the screens properly.
      If you are responsible for setting up the LED processor, try to find out what brand it is and read the manual for setup instructions. But you will be able to set up the map however you like with the processor.

      @@SeanBowes What happens is that the one who is going to configure the screen and project the visuals will be me, there will be no technician who will send me the outmap for that! What I will do is use the pixels of each LED panel which is 128x128 pixels to calculate and divide the slices. Since it is a 4*3 meter screen, it is 1024x768px. If the screen is full I just need to make a slice and place it on the top left in the output, but if it is the central screen with strips on the sides I have to make more slices. So my doubt is more than anything in which way I have to place those slices on the top left part in the output, considering that I know the measurements of the screen, since each panel is 128x128. The doubt arises because I have read that in the output the processor takes the top left part, so how can I do that? Or just place all my slices freely but to the top left part in the output?

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  Рік тому +2

      @@nestormartinez5291 in that case you have total control of that decision. You can place them wherever you like, as long as it fits within the standard output size you selected to send to the wall. Pushing everything into the top left is just a guideline for efficiency and it’s where the 0,0 point is of your canvas.

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  Рік тому +2

      There are situations where that might be the case, especially if your slices fit in your output map the same way they are arranged in reality and don’t need to be rearranged and packed together to save space. The input map is where the slices are told what section of your composition canvas to sample and sent to screen. So arranging them as they are in the real world there allows content to span across the screens in a logical and cohesive way.

Try swapping things that work (outputs, cables, dongles) from a screen that does work to the one that doesn’t to see if one fixes it, then replace that cable.

    If that’s not it, there is a way to do it? And how.

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  10 місяців тому

      Yep, masks are the answer. Look in the properties panel of the mask for Invert to get it to cut out a hole mask instead of cropping inside the mask. There are input masks and Output Masks (add those from the + button you use to add slices). You may need a combination of masks and mask types to achieve your goal if you are cropping the outside and making a hole inside.

    Hi Sean! I'm working for the first time as a Visual Designer for LED screens in a show and this is SUPER helpful.
    Few questions:
    Which video format and resolution is better for importing into the Resolume project?
    And when you edited the shape with the mask, how do you know it's exactly the size shape it should be when you do it by hand?
    Last but not least: how do you export this? I'm not a VJ, just the designer so I would have to send it over.
    Thank you very much!

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  Рік тому +3

      Hey Maria, that’s awesome! The best format for Resolume is DXV codec. But you can easily convert to DXV from ProRes or other formats using the ‘Alley’ program from Resolume.
      The mask is best done on site. If you are creating mapped content from the start, it might be helpful to have a ‘bleed’ or extra content outside the mask area just in case that needs to adjust. But you can decide to be very precise with pixel values to get it perfectly symmetrical in the design phase.
      In the menu on the top left of the Advanced Output window, there is an option to Export to SVG which will export a vector file that can be brought in to Illustrator or after effects to use as a design guide.
      Hope that helps!! Hit me up on Instagram. I’d love to see what you’re working on

    What is use of test card ...,????? In led wall

    • @SeanBowes
      @SeanBowes  4 місяці тому

      There are many uses for a Test Card with LED walls and projection as well. The color spectrum and black to white gradient are used to check if your colors are looking correct and your black and white levels are correct. The square grid is used to make sure your image is correctly proportioned and not stretched or squished. The circle is used for the same reason. The circle, diagonal lines, and grid are also used to make sure your image is aligned across different screen sections correctly. And the sweep is used to make sure the panels are synced and there is no delay, tearing, or other weird things happening with animation moving across the screen. Some test cards have other features, for example photographs to make sure skin tones look nice. Overall they are a tool to isolate and test that different aspects of your image (color, gamma, dynamic range, scale, position, rotation, frame rate) are being displayed properly.
