  • I'm showing you WHY the Dorian mode makes complete sense with 12-bar blues!
    In this quick video, let's look at how the Dorian mode actually looks a lot like the pentatonic scale.
    Unconventional as it may seem, I'm going to show you how using the B and Gb from the pentatonic scale will work over a 12-bar blues chord progressionI have a fretboard diagram for you that's going to map it out simply. Screenshot the diagram to keep it in your files!

    I've probably done this by accident while working through the Master the Blues Series in UGS. Happy accidents happen when you color outside the lines. Just look at all of Bob Ross' Happy trees. :)

    Nice lesson! Very insightful. To me, the Dorian scale looks a lot like the relative minor blues scale.

    You playing the dorian mode different positions or different key

    Dorian is a Minor Mode. It sounds best over a progression where the Root chord is a minor chord and the 4 chord is a major chord. Examples are 6 blade knife, evil ways, stop dragging my heart around, doin time, etc. When you hit that raised 6 over the change it sounds glorious.

    I found a simple trick instead of the Dorian mode just back up to Fresh from your rutinel and play that major scale than those are the same as the Dorian in a so you can use this method from any root note on the board backup two Frets and play the major scale,it will work great over the four and five chords

    • @chrismarquis8833
      @chrismarquis8833 2 роки тому +1

      Sorry, type o's, 2 note back from your root note, or key your playing in, you can also find out where the major scale is in relationship to your root note in all the rest of the modes so you really only need to memorize one scale the major scale

    • @chrismarquis8833
      @chrismarquis8833 2 роки тому

      I know you're thinking it can't be that simple but it really is

    • @chrismarquis8833

      For instance the lydian scale is 5 Frets up from your root note play that major scale another words D major would be the same as A lydian

    Thank you for the lesson. I think you should call the major 6th F# and not Gb, as you should not have two different G in the same scale. Furthermore A dorian derives from G major that contains F#

      Yes, correct! I had a computer program create the graphic for me, but should’ve caught that.👍

    Ive been using Dorian mode for the Blues for years! It just seem to fit! But that's pretty elementary isn't it?

  • @WayneMemphisMojo
    @WayneMemphisMojo 3 роки тому +6

    I'm too nerdy for this ... I keep wanting to say, "F#" in stead of "Gb"

    • @jonathanblackwell42
      @jonathanblackwell42 3 роки тому +3

      That's not just being nerdy. Since this is A Dorian, making it the second mode of G major, there is 1 sharp in the key: F#. The first instance of Gb in a scale doesn't occur until the key of Db. So you're being correct too! Does it absolutely matter in this case? Not really.
      I absolutely agree...that is F#!

    yeah but the dorian sounds awful. i think it's why so many guitarists sound the same. I'm trying to get used to playing it, but dear god. regular mode or scale or whatever then intertwining diminished and harmonic minor are so much more interesting and cool sounding. maybe i'm an asshole. i don't know. just because something 'works' i feel isn't a good enough reason.
    good playing, but jesus christ the dorian is bad

    • @yourguitarsage

      Try bending the two into the flat 3. All of a sudden, it will click for you. Just playing the note however does not sound very good as you said. Not an asshole. 👍
