    I still didn't get the answer to your question of what to do then, to do a zone 2 run, do you stop? Do you slow to stay in zone 2? He didn't answer it, I really want to know the answer. I've been doing shorter runs to stay in zone 2

    Awesome stuff Jason! The Zone 2 training discussion was very interesting. My aerobic capacity has always been my limiter so I would run after workouts to try to improve it but I was always more concerned about my pace and not my heart rate. Lately I've incorporated walking into my running if my heart rate gets too high or just go for long walks. I will also slow down or reduce the damper on the erg bike to stay in that zone 2. It's been really hard for me to do but after hearing this I know I'm doing the right thing and need to do it more. Henshaw is always a great interview. Thanks!

    Jason, you mentioned tendonitis in your elbow, I think, like tennis elbow. What'd you do for that? I'm 50 back to exercising after 12 years at my local CF box. I did a farmer's carry this morning with 10lb kB in each hand. Coach said no, you're just going to the store, you need to carry 25lb each in order to get anything from this. He said my grip was weak and this is why I have the tendonitis. Does this ring true?

    • @JasonGrubb
      @JasonGrubb  9 місяців тому +1

      Tendonitis isn't from a weak grip - it's from overuse. I had to take a break from anything grippy for about 6 weeks (while training for a 1/2 ironman). That did the trick.

    Great Interview 👍👍 for someone who just started with fitness - Chris has spoken a lot about "Zone 2" - What is the definition of "zone2"? did not find any table or scheme

    • @JasonGrubb
      @JasonGrubb  2 роки тому +2

      Great question. Zone 2 is maintaining roughly 60%-70% of your maximum heart rate for a long duration. It's a sweet spot between easy and moderate training. Here's a good article on the topic: www.livescience.com/zone-2-training

    • @richardmiddleton7770
      @richardmiddleton7770 Рік тому +1

      I like the Maffetone method because it's easy to calculate. It's simply 180 minus your age +/-5 beats. Try to stay in that heart rate zone for a minimum of 45 minutes per session.

    I think anyone that has ever done CrossFit could agree with that. Absolutely, you can’t go balls to the wall day in and day out, regardless of your age. I fell in love with CrossFit from the word go, but I have always had an issue with the programming. I’ve always felt that there has to be a better, smarter way to get there without the constant, daily grind. A balance. There has to be a balance. If you do this long enough, one way or another, you’re going to figure that out. The issue here is that people shouldn’t have to figure that out the hard way. We just need smarter programming, and I would think it’s fair to say, that we just don’t have that at most boxes.

    • @JasonGrubb
      @JasonGrubb  Рік тому +1

      Good stuff! I'd also add that even if there is good programming, some of us (ME lol) won't listen before we find out the hard way

  • @turbdonkey
    @turbdonkey 2 роки тому +2

    Great content but Chris never answered the question of my intent on the c2 bike is stamina (zone 2) what can I do to make sure I'm actually achieving that and not allowing my heart rate to go up by maintaining the same speed? Slow down? What if we don't have a HRM? I've been using nasal breathing and wondering if that's a good measure...

    • @JasonGrubb
      @JasonGrubb  2 роки тому +1

      You slow down... yes. Even if you don't have a HRM - when you feel yourself ramping up too much, slow down a tad.

I don't know if i need to subscribe to Mayhem (or your coaching) or just do more research, but is Hinshaw saying, don't let your heart rate drift up during zone 2? Like we should slow down and maintain the heart rate?

    So for a 58 yr old man HIT cardio (which i love) versus slow long steady state cardio (which i hate) , how should i be programming each in my Crossfit training?

    • @JasonGrubb
      @JasonGrubb  2 роки тому +2

      Hey Derek - Honestly... I don't recommend programming for yourself. I think that's one of the hardest things to do unless you are a programmer specifically. Does that make sense? It's like asking your accountant how you should do your own taxes. Outsource your programming and follow a good plan - a plan that has a good mix of short, medium, and long sessions/workouts. A mix of heavy, light, bodyweight... etc. I'm happy to help ya find a program (one of mine or someone else's depending on your overall goals). • @Fergyshow
    @Fergyshow Рік тому +1

    My chief concern with 55+ programming is the movements that wear and tear on the joints. Please understand it is not THE workout. Anyone can do one Games workout if they have the skills. The challenge comes from training for those movements in competition. For example, rope climbs, even legless, are not a problem for most 55+ competitors. But when you are training for a comp, you are training for time so you are dead dropping from 15-feet. That can lead to ankle and foot injuries especially since most boxes don’t have crash pads. Same can be said for rebound box jumps and TnG HSPU. I agree that Boz needs to bring in an older athlete or even an orthopedic to help create workouts that don’t beat up our joints.

    • @JasonGrubb
      @JasonGrubb  Рік тому +1

      I would argue that no masters athletes should be dead dropping rope climbs - I get down just as fast without dead dropping. No TnG box jumps... they're not that much faster. HSPU... not sure there. Just have to be smart.
      I think that there is a balance that you have to find... pushing hard enough to improve and staying smart enough to not get injured.

  • @ronlaughlin80

    45-49 age group is a narrow age range.
    50+ is a very broad range and therefore requires a bigger drop in intensity to not eliminate 60+ athletes.

    • @JasonGrubb
      @JasonGrubb  2 роки тому

      I hear what you're saying, but there is are 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, and 65+ age groups at the games. With the capacity of athletes increasing every year, I could see it being a difficult balance to provide the correct stimulus.
