I watched the whole thing and I have to thank you, for convincing me to not bother with putting lowering springs on my mk8 R. Like a good dad, you showed without telling lol
Good decision, might have made sense back in the day when suspensions weren't as well sorted as they are today with the armies of engineers they have but not any longer. Besides, I find that most modern cars are about as stiff as most people would want them, especially considering the quality of roads in many places. My mk 7.5 is just about perfect for daily use.
@@toddstevens8506 I was looking at Mk8 R's and wondering why anyone would want to mess with the great suspension and ride it has, in the UK at least the R is rapid over bad country roads, no idea why someone would want to make it ride worse.

I’ve done this job 3 times on my MK7, and I don’t see why people are so scared of removing the axle. It’s literally just 6 bolts you need to remove. Super easy.
Do you have the tools? Thats the big question always. Sometimes its just cheaper to take it to a workshop. You definitely need a spring compressor and often buying tools ends up being way more expensive.
Yes, but putting the axle back in? Forget about it. Took me HOURS of wrestling with it and stressing about crossthreading my bolts. The 2x4 method is definitely super sketchy though and I wouldn't try it again. All I could think about was my block of wood shearing off and impaling me in the face lol. Also as far as the 2x4 method goes. It didn't save me all that much time since it took me a bit to cut my piece of wood down to the right size and to dial it in. My strut didn't separate from the knuckle nearly as easy the internet suggests and I still had to hammer on it a bit to get it loose. All in all I don't recommend DIY'ing a suspension install. I've DIY'd suspension on all of my cars, two of which were VW's. Didn't matter the make or model though, the install was terrible on every single one of them. I'm no doubt going to be having my suspension for my R installed at a reputable shop and have officially retired from the shade-tree-suspension-install game.

Thank you for making this video. I thought about trying this when I did my CSS knuckles and control arms, but thankfully didn't need to since I was removing the outer axle bolt and control arm. But now I know not to mess with it when I inevitably do springs or strut bearings down the road.

I used the same method when I installed my coilovers; however, I used a metal pipe with a longer bolt instead of the 4X2 wood and it worked beautifully.
I love the comedy in your videos Paul! The osha violation part had my dying. Is the 2x4 method sketchy and seem silly? Yes. Does it work? Yes. I’ve done springs on two S3s which didn’t require this. And 2 mk7 GTI which I did use 2x4. But a much shorter piece that I did not trim or drill a hole in. I suspect that lead to the wood splitting. Removing the axle bolts may actually be easier.
Great video! I'm definitely curious about how to run the DCC adaptation; I can't seem to find a straight answer about it on the forums beyond using OBDEleven so am holding off on lowering my GLI with DCC. Looking forward to your video on the subject! Keep up the great work!
Also, FWIW, dont use a 2x4. I used a piece of oak flooring (much stronger and narrower) which fit perfectly behenind the solenoid valve. Only jack up little bits at a time, and keep the steering knuckle moving so it doesnt seize up and build compression.

When I'm at highway speeds the car sometimes pulls to the side. It's difficult to replicate. It pulls both ways. It's not in the steering wheel. The best way I can describe it is when driving on a very windy day. How the car sometimes feels like the wind pushes it to the side. Like I said, it's very difficult to describe. It does not feel dangerous. But it is noticeable.
Great video. Have you ever thought about doing how-to videos in someone's actual home garage...no lifts, probably less than complete tool box, etc...? Sort of a real world DIY.
the 2x4 method worked for me really well when swapping old coilovers to new coilovers on my MK7. However, after all was said and done I needed to make some adjustments that required removing one coilover and reseating it. For whatever reason - fatigue, frustration, etc... the 2x4 did not cooperate as well as it has 2 hours prior. It kept catching on the control arm (I think) so rather than lift the shuck out of the knuckle, the whole thing kept raising up. Quite frustrating. So, while not the textbook way to do it, it worked well for me and I had a strong piece of wood that did not break. YMMV. If you've never done suspension on a MK5 or newer.... maybe go to a pro. I learned the hard way on my mk5...
A note for the level sensors: You can just pop the arm off the ball mount on the LCA instead of removing the entire sensor. A note for the 2x4 on DCC cars: Make a cut out for the DCC solenoid so that the 2x4 is supported on the sway bar tab and the DCC solenoid. Takes most of the sketch out.
Dang, that lil strut spreader bit is genius and I can grind one up myself. I don't work on these and needing that at all seems kinda stupid but that's a big upgrade from trying to turn a flat screwdriver to spread other stuff
They’re cheap on Amazon. I have 3 of them I keep around just in case one goes bad. It would be cheaper to buy on Amazon than for you to build one yourself
You can do the fronts in about 15 min with the "2x4" method when done correctly. Iv used this method with no issue. Also consider the quality of the wood.
I do the normal way just instead of the 3 ball joint bolts being removed I just remove the one nut above so I don’t mess up the alignment much on the LCA.
I would remove the axle by bolt in the hub instead just same easier to me On another note. Paul what is your opinion on the one time bolts and nuts? I hate it, if it's stretch bolts in an engine I'm reuse them
So I'm watching this getting ready to take off the slammed suspension the previous owner put on my car and replace it with factory DCC shocks. Most of the work I've done on this car has taken it back closer to stock.
Hey Paul, used this method on my MK7 Alltrack. Until watching you do it, I didn’t think about how sketchy it actually was. Worked like a charm though. Probably on to something that DCC makes it a little less easy. I think it’s worth pointing out, you’re going to need an alignment regardless, so spending the extra time to disconnect the axle, is probably a good idea.
One tip I will give is be careful with cheap coilovers. I had stance+ coilovers on my Mk6 and switched to Lo 35mm lowering springs, the car sits lower on the springs but does not rub like it did on cheap coilovers.

VWs whole front suspension setup is such a pain! Why they use shock mounts with nuts built instead of studs is beyond me. Would make lining things up/installing way easier. Having to use the spreader tool and undo the axle is just so unnecessarily complicated.

How about tightening the bolts on ride height, instead of winding up the rubber bushings as you did? At least it's a good reason to update to PU bushings in about 25k, when the OEMs are split. Right about when you need to change the tyres too, since you didn't mention the necessity of a 4-wheel alignment...
Do I need to adjust the LED Headlight after lowering the car with Racingline, do we follow the same method as Audi that you mentioned or this MK8 has self adjustment? I just don't see your video about it. Thanks!
Hey Paul - I am installing the same lowering springs literally right now at the shop. They are telling me that I MUST do the ACC alignment and I'm calling bs on it due to the fact that it's only a ~25mm drop. Can I get your professional opinion? I don't think you did this in your install.
Does Charles know you tightened the rear bushings without weight on the rear suspension? It would likely be a bit lower if you tightened it with weight on it.
I'd be interested to see you put on lowering springs on an Atlas or Cross Sport part of the MQB Platform, when I was looking at the axle into the trans there aren't any bolts? spline into trans?

I tried this method once and it kind of worked well on the left hand side but it went wrong on the right hand side where the strut doesn't behave the same way and it kept kicking to one side and not going straight up. I would strongly discourage people from using it

I have a issue with my Mk7 with 100,000 miles. A misfire on cylinder 3 only, misfire is only on idle. Did compression test 190 on 1,2,4 and 160 on 3. Changed spark plugs, coils, injectors, and did a carb clean. Any help on what it could be the issue would be appreciate it.
I was wondering this myself. I would think some .005 or .010 shim stock would keep it from getting chewed up but still leave room for the tool. **even some cheap feeler gauges might help prevent that...
@@Nick_G7IZR possibly .010 should be plenty thick enough to protect the aluminum without being overly bulky. I've not used the tool though, so I don't really know.

Dude. I would have just pulled the axle etc. I ain’t putting wood under there. But, struts on VW are always exciting.
Similar setup on my TT. I removed the axle from the knuckle, however removing the axle from the transmission looks way easier.
Should the rear knuckle to lower arm bushing bolt be tightened at ride height? Maybe why it was sitting high in the rear 🤔
I did this once and almost got my arm chopped off. Do not attempt shortcuts when doing this.
This is why I pay the experts to do something like this.

Use a bottle jack between the knuckle and bottom of the spring perch. Way easier

Yes they spline in if there are no bolts. There is usually a special tool but you can often pop out with a pry bar.

None of the tuners have broken the ECU yet, we won’t see any tunes until that happens.

What about torquing theses bolts on curb high ?
Is there enough room to put a shim of some sort in the knuckle to spread the load and prevent damage to the aluminium?
I was wondering this myself. I would think some .005 or .010 shim stock would keep it from getting chewed up but still leave room for the tool.

.010 should be plenty thick enough to protect the aluminum without being overly bulky. I've not used the tool though, so I don't really know.
