  • Mold removal in a crawl space can be tough to do so make sure you do it correctly and safely. Proper protective equipment for mold removal is vital. Mold remediation requires applying negative air to make sure mold doesn't spread to other areas of the home. This is often overlooked, even by professional mold remediation contractors.
What chemicals should you use and what chemicals should you stay away from during mold remediation? We prefer Anabec products and soda blasting when performing mold remediation.

👍👍👍 great explanation. I have always found that concrobium does a better job as a "preventative" more than a treatment. I build showers and alot of times the visible discoloration freaks people out. Dead or alive, they don't like it. I usually use a fairly strong solution of chlorine and water to kill all the surface mold and get the color back. Then I dry it out really well with fans. Then liberally soak everything with concrobium and let that dry. Mold doesn't generally just appear out of nowhere. Something is causing that mold growth. You have to find the source of the moisture and eliminate it. The preventative products can only do so much. You have to get the moisture under control

As a new home-owner, I'm glad to have found your channel! Here we seem to have a yellow powdery-looking mould that can grow in damp soil - it looks creepy! I'm becoming convinced that ventilated basements are not the best idea, especially where summer humidity can be high. I know that dehumidifiers can be effective in encapsulated crawl spaces, but could HRV or ERV systems also be effective (perhaps in conjunction with a dehu)?

    • @CrawlSpaceNinja

we haven't used an HRV in those ways so we wouldn't be able to provide much advice on it.

True story: On my basement floor I removed horse mats that were placed there by someone else about 3-4 years ago. Probably covered 20% - 30% of the floor. They were WET underneath despite a permanent dehu that is plumbed to send water outside ... I swept and vacuumed the floor but there was still a little black and “questionable” colorations on the floor. It looked dry, but still stank the room. Only after I quickly went over it with a soapy mop (using dissolved Ajax or similar) did the stink go away. Bare concrete floors do not like plastic tubs, vinyl or rubber placed directly on top of them. Concrete floors (again, my experience) only need simple cardboard sheet or a rug to stay dry, so long as you don’t then smash the cardboard with a plastic tub on top that traps water.

Will a shop-vac pull the mold off the wood or do I need to wipe the mold first, then use shop vac? Also, If I put a HEPA filter in my shop vac for the cleaning, will I still need to rent a HEPA Air Scrubber while removing the mold? Thanks for your time and suggestions, Francis

Hi! We had mold air testing done in our home and the mold in our home air matched the air in our crawlspace. Long story short, there is absolutely no visible mold. We also just had all of our duct work replaced because there was gaps between the ducts and our vents but there is still mold in the crawl space air. Is it possible that it is just coming from the ground? If so, how would I deal with that without having to use harsh chemicals to kill it?

With your mold investigator kit what kind of test are they and if it's just a swab test or a tape lift couldn't you do it on any surface that isn't in a clean room and you would test positive for mold spores since they are everywhere in nature ?

    • @CrawlSpaceNinja

So long as the relative humidity in the crawl space is low enough to treat the mold, a fogger would be a great option to apply mold disinfectant in a tight crawl space. Learn more about the fogger we use here: ua-cam.com/video/spepohPTSd8/v-deo.html

I thank you for the reply! I do have a couple issues with water puddling on the one side of my house when it rains. Its not right up against the house but maybe 15' away. I'm sure it migrates under the house tho. I'm looking to get a french drain put around the house to carry it away. I had a water proofing company come out a while back because I wanted the crawl space encapsulated. He crawled under and when he came back out all he said was "That it could be done but thats kinda tight under there. I dont think my guys would appreciate doing that". I admit, it is kinda tight (about 2'+). I told him your ad says you do crawl spaces so what do you consider a crawl space. He said "something that you sit or stand up in". I told him "a crawl space is just that, a space where you have to crawl". Nobody was being rude to each other at all and he said he'd get back to me and I never heard from him again. So that was the end of that. Someday I hope to dig it out under there and make a decent crawl space. Anyway, the reason I asked about the fogger was because I know its damp under there and I was just looking to keep things at bay til I'm able to get something done. I haven't looked under there for a while and I haven't seen any mold when I did, but we had a ton of rain this year and I dont want anything starting to grow. There is ventilation all around the house. So that should help some. I thank you again for the reply! Have a great day!

Happysad, we would suggest the following: Using a soft hairbrush or toothbrush, brush the mold and mildew from the material. Wash the affected area with a solution made up of 1/2 cup Lysol to a gallon of hot water. And/or rinse with a solution of 1 cup of lemon juice and 1 cup of salt to a gallon of hot water. Allow the material to dry completely in the sun. We hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

Winner for Life ...Simply adding a dehumidifier doesn’t mean it’s capable of maintaining the overall humidity at an acceptable level. A dehumidifier has to be sized to the volume of the chamber, plus the humidity source has to be controlled, or stopped. You are still maintaining a high humidity environment, which through absorption, will cause the wood moisture content to stay between 16-20%, allowing the mold to proliferate.
