We went from thinking "wow Vegas just fleeced everyone in their expansion year" to "wow Vegas is getting fleeced by everyone"
Fleecing themselves with bad decisions. Other teams are just benefiting from their desperation.
@@kftc1980 If I was a GM in the NHL I'd make sure to be good friends with both Vegas and Philly.
I think the league is paying them back. Other teams have cap issues, but Vegas is the only one that can't get something for their assets.
Chicago is really working hard for that second sentence consideration.
This is me in franchise mode trying to make real trades. Trying to trade for a player with a high cap hit but they had salary retention which I'm unable to get.
Vegas' history thus far is literally one giant cautionary tale. If there was ever a mistake to be made, they made it, and then kept making it worse. Crazy.
Could you imagine what they'd look like without a cap? Spending like oil patch workers on a long weekend in Edmonton!
@@donmackie6086 No salary cap? You wouldn't know in Vegas if you were skating on ice or white powder...
Pre cap. Detroit paid wild money. It worked in 01-02 but usually you couldn’t buy a cup. Many tried and failed.
@@eirikrdberg1161 Detroit already had a winning foundation at that point. They paid extra to assemble arguably the greatest roster ever, and to increase their odds. Many of the top players on that team were drafted by Detroit, they purchased additional assets to complement them.
@@mattblom3990 lol!
For a team so smart in the expansion draft, it's baffling how poorly they managed this team afterwards. Most of these trades are awful, and a lot of them you didn't even need hindsight to tell you this.
That’s because McPhee did the draft, I am sure McCrimmon has been the GM for a lot of these moves.
@@KevinQ25 They co-manage. McPhee has signed off on every one of them.
@@M.to.the.L yikes
@@KevinQ25 big yikes :(
@@KevinQ25 I wouldn't be surprised if McPhee still makes all the decisions. Think they promoted McCrimmon to keep him in the organization.
Vegas really has taken on a Vegas mentality with their roster.
"Of course I can take out another mortgage on the house, I'm winning this a round of blackjack this time for sure!"
Perfect!
Lol Pyro that's a great comment.
Won the jackpot on their first spin, and have been stuck sitting at the slot machine ever since.
Spot on.
Urinating tree Said the Same Thing.
"Its Vegas Baby"
UrinatingTree has a great video about Vegas where he shows that the original plan was to push for the playoffs in year 4 or 5 and they hit the jackpot the first time they sat down at a slot machine and are addicted for life.
I saw that video weeks ago "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas" and it was fantastic!
Greatest coaching job in the history of the NHL. What does that get you? Fired and now a great job with NYR.
An apt analogy, to be sure. I might also compare it to a sugar rush or even a drug high, and they've been chasing that feeling ever since, damn the consequences. As a longtime fan of one of VGK's division rivals, I have to admit that I resent that they were so successful their first couple of years. No matter the sport, success for an expansion team ought to be a reward that comes after suffering and hard work.
Good for the Habs and Nick Suzuki. a little bit of patience, and they got a huge talent, 1st liner, and most likely Captain out of a trade where the other guy was dumped for nothing in under 5 years.
Don't get me wrong, Suzuki is a wonderful hockey player. I don't think he's the 1st line center on a Stanley Cup winner. A very good piece, yes.
@@francoisbouvier7861 did you see what he did in last years playoffs?
@Really?! time will tell.
Slavkovsky will be the captain
@@petercasnocha5340 Maybe many years from now but he will for sure not be the next captain.
I really hate this management group tbh. They have literally made moves just for the sake of making moves. I felt that the roster was fine as it was without Eichel or Pietrangelo. I honestly think the only good trades we've made were the Stone and the Martinez trades.
No problem with Pietrangelo. He has stayed healthy when no one else has. That has to be factored in to the price of the player.
@@kftc1980 eichel was the overkill
@@scooterelway9191 Eichel is a wild card, we still don’t know how that will turnout. The problem is the consistent approach of trading cheap assets for expensive ones over and over again, as Shannon laid out. If he stays healthy and is productive, he effectively replaces Pacioretty.
Until that one real good hit to the neck…
I would agree with the Eichel statement but not the Pietrangelo one. He was busting his ass last season when others weren't. Get rid of McCrimmon who's making all these horrid trades.
It's crazy how even just a year ago Vegas seemed like the gold standard of expansion teams and Seattle was a joke. Now, Vegas has created a giant mess for themselves while Seattle can just sit tight and let Beniers, Wright, and their other prospects play top 6 minutes and see what happens.
Seattle is gunning for long term while Vegas is short term. Kinda funny given the cities in question haha
@@abrararifify its Vegas Baby. Eighter you Break the Bank or Not.
And the golden Knights don't Look oceans 13.
10 months later and VGK is in the SCF again.....Stick to your day jobs comment section. LOLOLOL
Don't forget probably Vegas' biggest mistake, dumping Gerard Gallant for Pete DeBoer.
Hired Cassidy and now they're in the finals 10 months later. Loving the cold takes in this comment section LOL
Vegas has officially fallen into the "no rebuild allowed" trap where a team gets stuck in a cycle of trading away future assets in order to patch the present.
10 months later....how you think about it now?
I really think Shannon needs a "F. Considerations" jersey. But what team? That's the question. He's been all over the place.
A custom jersey that is every team on it or just an NHL generic uni lol
Every team, obviously.
It's only a matter of time till he makes an all star team, so I'd go with an all star jersey
I vote a thrashers jersey
What’s certain is it will have a question mark as the jersey number.
Pacioretty and Burns to an already imposing team? Yikes! They gotta be an early favorite to emerge from the East next season. But we'll see.
Certainly the Metro at the least
Max will miss 32 games.
They also lost a few key guys
Greatly depends on Necas and KK. No second line center and they've lost their depth on D.
@@EveryTimeIDavid one of staal, KK or Necas will probably be able to step up in to a 2C role
Pacioretty for nothing? That’s a Vegas trade if I’ve ever seen one.
Well...the Canucks were pretty good at that too.
Say hi to Chicago!
Dallas Stars...hold my beer.
Fantastic player when healthy, rarely healthy. Goal scoring was a problem when he wasn’t in the lineup, now it will be a full time problem.
7 million in cap, and three less injuries a year.
9:21 I love the implication that the worst part about Shannon's head exploding is not that he'll be leaving Yvonne and his kids without a father, but that his jersey collection will be ruined.
Vegas going to the SCF in their first season was definitely a curse in disguise.
For sure. The saw the finish line and threw their plan out the window and went all in
Devil in disguise, you could say
10 months later they're back. Maybe Kelly knows exactly how to manage a roster and this comment section does not. So many cold takes up in here....🤣🤣🤣
Godspeed, Future Considerations. Best of luck in Vegas
The Vegas assets in vs assets out is shocking
I've said it here several times over the last year but Don Waddell continues to make me eat my words. When Dundon bought the team and brought Rod on as coach I was excited but doubted if Don was the guy to take over the GM duties, man was I wrong.
6:35 - Tuch grew up a Sabres fan, never stopped being a fan, and is definitely playing, here, with all the heart he has, which is extremely prodigious. We fleeced Vegas
Yepp. Getting rid og Eichel alone worth a lot. Cannot win with him. Even if they gave him away for nothing would benefit Buffalo. 10 million more to spend on others snd getting that nuicance out of the room. Well they did indeed get rid of him and got good stuff in return. Buffalo are interesting in regards to upcoming season. They need a good record after 25 games though, not after 6-7…
Noah Ostlund is the player the Sabres took with their 16th overall pick too and is a good player as well
I think at this point if I were a player I’d rather go somewhere like Winnipeg or Buffalo before Vegas. Sure it may not be Las Vegas but in those places I know (most of the time) they treat their player like people, not video game characters.
I think what helped Vegas was the fact it was “Vegas”. Now if you want to live in the desert, Arizona might be a better place to go because you know they’ll keep you and not be like in Vegas where you could be the best player on the team, the face of the franchise, loved by all their fans all the while looking behind you to make sure management doesn’t stab you in the back and trade you.
As a Habs fan, even if the last season was horrendous, it still brings me joy to think how the Habs took out the very highly favoured Vegas in semi-finals in 2021. I truly hope Vegas never wins, they don't deserve it.
We won the west conference 1st ( only year in there )....
Hey Ms ...how many times did leafs win that western conference ?
As a Sharks fan, Vegas losing to Montreal might be my favorite series ever.
Nobody "deserves" it. That thinking is BS. A team earns it or they don't. Otherwise the Cup is turned into a participation trophy.
I was there for game five, so delicious!
@@quiricomazarin476 that wasn’t the western conference technically
Thrilled for the Canes as GM Waddell continues his Masterclass FA Event.

We will never get to see a Pacioretty-Eichel-Stone line now 😭
Consolation, we get to see a pacioretty aho svechnikov line
Love that Eichel decided to go to a team that is a bit of a sinking ship. Missed the playoffs and now Vegas dumping assets with minimal returns. People talk about great players to never win the Cup, but Eichel maybe the first to never make the playoffs. Enjoy the swim, Jack.
You sound bitter.
Coming from a Sabres fan, I don’t feel any sympathy for him at all.
Karma. Use that talent platform to be a leader, not a whiner.
I don’t know what was more satisfying… Tuch stripping the puck from him and sealing the game… or his trademark eye roll upon being eliminated from the playoffs a couple weeks later.
Sabres fans really seething, but Jack is literally a top 5 centre in the league. He’ll do fine.
Don Waddell is putting on a masterclass
As a ranger fan, a 4 year deal means 2 years then your bought out the last 2
Brad richards
Kevin shattenkirk

Vegas' asset management is the anti-yotes
That 2022 3rd involved in the Dadonov trade sure made the rounds...
It started by going to Vegas from Vancouver for Schmidt.
Then it went to Ottawa in the Dadonov trade.
Then it went back to Vancouver in the Hamonic trade.
That pick became Elias Pettersson the 2nd.
Las Vegas is really one of my favorite destinations and I was ecstatic when they got a team and over the moon when they did so good so early.
I had such high hopes for them but it just seems as though management is ruining them and ripping their heart out at the same time.... and they don't seem to even realize it or care.. So many of the original "misfits" gone and the team doesn't look the same, feel the same and doesn't seem to have any future.
It's painful because even though they're not "my" team, I really liked them.
Vegas, to me, looks like a shit hole. I never had any desire to go to Vegas.
@@newyardleysinclair9960 Don't go then.
Missed that Eichels no trade clause kicks in this season
Appreciate the strong opinion and throwback to 2016-2018 Shannon
Player: I’m glad to sign in Vegas. What’s the real estate market like?
Vegas: You talking rentals?
Player: No, to buy.
Vegas: What did I say?
What happened to Vegas, they used to be a fan favourite but ever since they did the Fleury trade things have changed.
It started with them dumping Schmidt.
Vegas is so fun to hate
For some people, but not all... Statistically Fleury wasn't worth his cap hit, and he had a terrible few months (when his Dad died) and that's why they got Lehner in the first place. They marketed the heck out of him and he was a poster child and then ignorant fans that got overly attached had a hissy fit. If they could have been healthy last year, it would have been interesting... Half the starters out with freak injuries... If they can win and be in the top 3 in the division, the disgruntled fans will forget quickly.
Great video! Love how in depth you are with every team.
Such great commentary, Shannon! Us locals finding our way back to Kings Ducks Sharks Yotes…before there were VGK….
looking forward to the future considerations video whenever that happens! :)
This is glorious. Vegas will finally feel what it's like to be an expantion team. Love it.
Does vegas know they can get guys back in trades?
Curious if Vegas would give up their early success for their picks and young players back. They had a stockpile of prospects and picks which is why they spent so much acquiring proven players
As a Kraken fan and having listened to most people harp on with absurd comparisons with VGK inaugural season, it will be interesting to compare the two franchises in 10 years.
i know seattle fans love francis , but at some point the team will need to replace him with someone who can make trades and do a better job at drafting . i speak of this cause im a canes fan and know francis very well . bean , fleury , hanifin , skinner , lindholm , Murphy , all players no longer with the canes because they could not push the pace to help them win , the only mainstays from the francis era are aho , necas , and pesce . 3 guys , slavin was a rutherford pick . and typically later round picks take 3 to 4 years of development in order to make it to the nhl . i hope it works out for seattle though . and that francis learned from his mistakes when he was in carolina .
It would be funny if you used a college professors board to do Vegas and it might need another board to fully get comprehend how the VGK royally screwed up.
The Pietrangelo deal was the sign that they might had lost it, before that they had a clear identity and were built as such towards winning.
The high risk signings were manageable because the team was surprisingly really good (*and an instant contender due to how well they managed the Exp.Draft.)
Agreed
Canes gm has earned the name Don Goddell for a reason.
VGK fan here, just want to say
What in the actual hell??
Seriously, i couldn't agree more.
Your franchise is becoming a monster, wearing a Vegas jersey for Halloween this year.
Don Waddell the absolute mad lad; us Caniacs thank you for this glorious July 13th bounty
Don playing money ball at this point it’s crazy at this point
Lets not get too excited we lost dangelo and trochek.
@@mode1charlie170 we replaced TDA with burns and got picks in return, not bad
Trocheck, that one hurts but I wish him the best
Just an off-season video suggestion.
What is the best outcome for future considerations, in other words, what is / are the best players that were future considerations
Vegas capologist has to be some sort of yes man he's just there to force the cap crunch to work. Also this crunch has to be the year where they have to stop selling the future since they will need to rely a lot on elc and/or league minimum guys to fill the roster slots
Carolina is giving Ottawa a run for best offseason moves- changing out DeAngelo for Burns and adding Patches for nothing... still have a few holes to fill (trocheck, nieder, bear) but so far it looks pretty good.
It’s been an amazing day being a Canes fan. Getting Burns, Kase, and Pacioretty in the same day is amazing. Don Waddell and others deserve a lot of recognition for what they did and they didn’t give up much either. (Lorentz who is a solid 4th liner, Eetu Makiniemi is a good goalie prospect, and a 3rd round pick) thats all they gave up lmao. What a steal. Hopefully this means they can finally reach the SCF.
Looks like the Vegas fans have gotten the reverse expansion experience. Usually, it's a dumpster fire of a team that climbs its way to respectability. Here, it's a respectable team's descent into a dumpster fire. I have to admit though, there's a fascination watching all of this and cheering it on. If you have no loyalty to the players. There's going to be no loyalty coming back. Who's going to want to bleed for this team if as soon as the next shiny thing appears, they're out the door?
Honestly the eichel trade already looks terrible, gave buffalo a major part of their potential future and got massive cap issues, maybe eichel is amazing next year and I eat my words but sheesh some bad moves here
Eichel’s been a top 5 centre since he joined the league. Once he’s healthy, I can see him and Stone lighting it up. However, with the way Vegas has been trading out assets, not really sure how much of a team they have left.
I’ve never seen a team take themselves from serious contender to mediocre at best with nothing but a handful of awful trades and a lack of patience.
Vegas reminds me of a teenager getting their first credit card. They get a ton of debt and look for a way to get it down just to run in up again, all the while not learning the lesson and does it again.
losing Trocheck and TDA stings just like losing Nedeljkovic, but man Waddell knows how to make up for it.
Tough to lose Tro, gonna miss the hug. But my kid's favorite is Nino, and it's not looking good for his return. They got the fuel and the fire, but no more Niederreiter :( Maybe he signs for like 1m aav !
The Vegas Golden Knights: how to take an elite team and tinker it into oblivion
My older brother lived in Detroit until 97. Then he moved to Vegas. He passed away this past June, this is their year.
Your comic timing is tremendous....love the jersey comment 😄😄
As a Sharks fan this brings me joy.
You do need to make a video discussing the most valuable players traded for future consideration. Or what has future considerations ever given a team that holds that card.
I’d also be interested in seeing a video on what the best future considerations ever turned out to be
They would have to retain a lot to move Karlson he’s fallen off a cliff after that 40 goal season he signed a new contract off of
The past couple years Vegas has made some interesting decisions to say the least.
I’m curious your thoughts as to how/why Vegas’ management has kept their jobs after all this. I work in the building with HSK so get to see the prospects a lot. The only positive I could see out of this is that it gives Brisson an opportunity to play NHL minutes this year. Other than that this team has worse asset management than anything I’ve seen
I have to say I loved the whole misfits thing and I happened to see a game while I was in Vegas during that inaugural year and I got hooked. Since then I feel like I have been thinking oh this will be a great year and then scratching my head, why would they do that. They clearly have no loyalty and I think you are right people won’t want to go there. This team is a sinking ship and some management needs to be fired. I don’t know if Butch can turn them around.
very good analysis.
The management team looked like geniuses in that first year, but I agree they have crapped the bed ever since. At one point they were a very talented exciting young team with tons of assets. Now they are an old injury riddled team with almost no assets.
Who would’ve thought with an absolutely clean slate and a lot of help, management and ownership could’ve messed things up so bad, so fast. Yikes.
I’m sticking with this team. But McPhee and MacCrimmon need to go and Foley needs to stop being the Dan Snyder of the NHL.
Vegas is Like Somebody who plays "be a gm" for the First Time.
And that somebody wants to win the Cup by all means necessary.
Also the organisation is the embodyment of Vegas. The Attitude of " eighter you win or you loose in Vegas" is deep in them.
And Like an addict they Play and Play and Play, but loose their Future, all while saying that they will make it next time.
That will Not work.
If a player ever had pressure it is Jack Eichel. Everything is on him, and he is such a sore loser and the reason Buffalo were terrible. Buffalo should be good with Skinner back scoring 30-40 with Tuch and Krebs will have a great season.
If Skinner could just score when it matters lol
It started right away. Giving Fleury and a few others raises while they still had valid contracts. That was McPhee starting the cap mismanagement in year their first freakin offseason. There was no turning back after that.
This should be a mandatory video for all GM's to see - how to really screw up things up within a franchise.
Think if the showed just a little prudence they may have already had a cup or another finals appearance, or be on the verge
Poor management even if it's just mgt saying no to owners
I feel for Lenner. Leaving Buffalo and finaly get picked up by a good team and now this.
And he got and still gets relentless hate from the VGK fans because they completely idolized Fleury. Lehner's numbers are good when he's healthy. If he sticks around he needs a bounce back year in a BIG way. Fleury was not worth his cap hit and was a playoff choker.
Great video. Summed up most people's thought beautifully.
Burns and Pacioretty in the same day for a bag of chips????
It’s a good day to be a Canes fan 😁
Not too shabby. I’m still worried about our goaltending 🫤
@@Mike_Stramaglio what are you worried about? Freddy’s only concern is his injury. His play on the ice last season should have convinced you he is an elite goalie. Raanta is a solid backup as well and proved he can hold the fort down in the playoffs.
Great pickup for my Canes. Still have some work to do. Only about $4M left in cap space. We'll see what happens with Nino.
This is insanity. Vegas needs to be called out now...They've become a cruel and arrogant franchise towards their own players. Immature, chasing the newest shiniest thing. But they just seem so mean spirited and I know it's professional sports but at some point you have to call them out!

Maybe their GM needs to play Franchise mode in NHL 22 to actually see what might happen when you spend a lot in trades and give away your best young talent for next to nothing in the end. Amusing to see how many bad moves can be made with this team.
I remember when a player was traded for future considerations which eventually turned out to be him.
You nailed it on good areas to raise a family...
"Rabbit Hole" = EXACTLY!
What an offseason
Amazing to think that Carolina might be more of a destination market than Vegas at this stage.
Great video but you should’ve added a signed column. When they extended pacioretty, stone and martinez the problem was exposed
I understand doing this video from the Vegas perspective but I wish you had talked about what it means for Carolina a bit more
If this was NHL20 or whatever Vegas is what would happen if the parent that has been playing EA games for year did the expansion draft... then gave the controller to their 7 year old and said “do whatever.”
Pacioretty is literally an elite goal scorer, vegas has some real screws loose. Who tf is scoring their goals because Dadonov and Pacioretty sure arent, do they have any depth?
Great video Dhannon.
The story of the Vegas Golden Knights is one filled with gambles they have taken in pursuit of the Stanley cup. Crazy how many draft picks they have given away in their first five years of existence.
Look I’m a buffalo fan through and through but that jack eichel deal will look good jn a full season for them
If the cancer doesn’t spread in the lockerroom first.
One has to remember, on their initial training camp, Vegas had to send down Shiypachiov to the Chicago Wolves due to cap issues... lol -- (edit : I think it was that they had too many contracts at the time but still, poor asset management). lol
Is this revolving door meant to sell jerseys and keep the seats full w/ new, quality players?
Arte Moreno, owner of the (formerly Ca., Anaheim) LA Angles of Anaheim, changes the name of the team in order to tap a larger retail market. And then he went out and got Albert Pujols for his batting (specifically home runs) AND sales of jerseys.
I like how Shannon's biggest concern with his head exploding was staining all his jerseys, not the fact that he wouldn't be alive and able to look at them or wear them anymore...
This trade is like when squidward traded everything he owned (Suzuki) for the piece of paper that SpongeBob was playing with (pacioretty) only for him to horrifically fail with it and have Patrick throw it away. In other words he traded everything he owned for a piece of paper he lost for absolutely nothing
Vegas feels like someone who finally got a good job and decided to celebrate by buying new furniture. Then they saw a car they wanted. Then ooo. Boat sale. Now the credit card is coming due.
The GM/Owner is really messing up this team over the past few years Eichel trade was a bad idea like sure he’s a 1st line center but like Stephenson was playing really well the first half of the season and a lot of it was without Pachy or Stone Then if you wait till the off season let Smith go and trade pachy you can grab a guy like kadri or Burakovsky or something most likely maybe even have a shot at Johnny hockey but nope gotta get Eichel trade away promising players to be a worse team
I feel so bad for future considerations…. He was such a good player and was traded for something not even close to his value
got hyped when the 2nd board came out lets gooooo
