- Today is April 8 2024, and we should be having a total eclipse of the sun today. Jim takes the horses and logs up at Paul Smiths College today and Brenda shares how the horses react to the eclipse on the farm.
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

We need more of these natural occurrences so we get two videos in one day. The videos of the day at the farm and in the woods getting darker & darker are really dramatic. Thanks for sharing Brenda’s and your experiences 👍👍
I agree and loved both so much. In our area of Alabama, it was very cloudy so hard to see much. We discovered you had a video of your experience and it was fantastic! Many thanks for all you do. You are so appreciated.
All the nocturnal bugs, birds and animals making their nighttime noises was fun to hear.
I was hearing some peeper frogs, I think. I’m unsure if they’re active more at night this time of the year. I know they are later.
This was my favorite part of the video as well.
The birds were quite loud 📢
Great day thanks for showing us your area during the eclipse.
I am so glad you shared your eclipse experience with us! The swath it took over NY showed it would go right over where you live. It was a 100 miles or more away from where I live. It didn't get dark here. Wow! I got to see it thanks to you! Great video! Thankyou.
Here in Arkansas we got the total eclipse. It was awesome! A little spooky when the darkness took over. Thank you Jim and Brenda for sharing your experience!
I don't know how you posted this video so quickly, but thanks so much for doing it. Since I live outside of the totality zone, this was an unexpected opportunity to experience it.
Two videos in one day? What a treat!
I did notice the peepers are singing as it gets dark.
I loved hearing the peepers too! They were really loud. Such a peaceful sound they make!!!
I live in Tennessee , we had a large portion of the eclipse but not the total darkness . The birds and some neighbors dogs got a bit excited . I told my husband Rick there was a mocking bird in our front yard where we watched , I said " that bird used about every thing in his vocabulary , it was very excited and fun to hear all his sounds ". Thanks for sharing this video . 🧡💛💚💙
I live in northeast Tennessee, so we weren't in the margin of viewing area. It rained all morning and afternoon, so we wouldn't have seen it anyway probably. Glad you got to experience at part of it!!!
How wonderful a Mocking bird singing his little heart ♥ out.
Everyone forgets to look at the shadows right before and after the eclipse. With a very fine line of light being cast the shadows become incredibly defined.
Yes, the designs, letterings and the brickworks, it was really sharp and very defined. Casted on a weird hue.
Agreed! Saw the annular in Utah in October and it was weird to see the shadow effect even tho it was a bluebird day.
We live in Peoria AZ; drove the motorhome to Arlington TX to experience the eclipse. We watched from the time the moon begin traveling in front of the sun all through the total eclipse out the other side. We were so excited to watch it and when it was over people started talking about what they were going to have for dinner and other somewhat mundane things. My husband likened it to watching the credits at a movie. Around here, KOA in Arlington, all the dogs seemed fine; there was no acting from them, but the birds went completely quiet and as the sun came back, they started chirping again. It was definitely a very cool day. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
It's an experience not to be missed,l was so excited, fantastic and a little spooky....nature is more powerful then we realise 😊 have a wonderful rest of the week uk England
Very cool, I watched it here in East Texas with my horses and dogs. The roosters started crowing and the goats started up too, didn't have much of an impact on my horses or dogs! It was really a very cool moment in time knowing millions were looking up all at the same times!!! Let's keep it that way! Love y'all! Annette
Thank you for the bonus video today. Here in Maryland, we were about 90%, and it was still very bright
EARL always comes over to Brenda to say hello.
He loves her.... What a great buddy....
Yes, you had the full eclipse. I was tracking it on my radar, I thought of you & Family. 👍
Jim you are an amazing, handsome, smart, hardworking man. Your videos warm my heart you remind me of my father and all the stories he told me about working and farming with his draft horses. Thanks for the great videos.
Very neat to have 2 different views of the eclipse a great view on both!!!! Blessings
Well, I wasn’t able to see it, but am glad that you did.
Here in Illinois we watched the Cardinals come to the feeders as the skies grew dusky. They are always the last to feed before nightfall.
I was happy to see the horses reaction. I fed my horses only a small breakfast and saved the rest for during the eclipse so they’d have their heads down eating. The strange thing was, it was cloudy here on the Canadian prairies but my horses went crazy galloping around. I wondered if it was coincidental but seeing your horses reaction confirmed for me that my horses knew something was happening. Wish I could have seen it in person but it was fun seeing it with the Gordons.
I went to the totality today and saw the solar flares with my bare eyes when it was safe to look at in the very short moment the moon blocked everything never realized the corona and solar flares were as large as they are really makes you appreciate horse drawn equipment more when you can see what causes the dangers of a Carrington advent like sep1-2 1859 and this is why im trying to start a horse drawn equipment shop
My daughter went south of IL to experience the eclipse and she said the birds, pelicans and the turkey vultures were very quiet. One turkey vulture stood next to her which it was very very weird. Wasn't sick or anything. After it was over with, it flew off. In my city, the strange shadows, taking in a yellowish hue, everyone looked out of the windows, cameras, glasses or the risk takers, looked up at the sun. I didn't have glasses so I made do with my metal coriander and white paper. I could see the segments between the sun and moon meeting together in the center. It was very weird feeling. It got a bit cooler, street lights were on even there was some light. My cat and guinea pigs were unaffected by this.
Strange day for sure. The animals didn't seem to be bothered much. Thank you for showing the eclipse. God bless..🌹❤️🙏
Thanks for posting. I thought of you as the eclipsed passed over New York. My guess is Bill & Baron were in "work mode" and didn't allow themselves to react to the darkness. Whereas your other horses were able to roam and being prey animals were considering fleeing - except the "light turned on" quickly. Such a treat! TWO videos in one day! Thank you for sharing.
I hear the "peepers" singing...they must think it's going to get dark.
Was out shopping and the street lights came on and bats came out with owls in Tennessee
It was a fun experience! I live in NW Ohio a d we has total darkness for about 3 min or so. Could still see brightness to the north but it got dark enough here that my solar lights came on.
I saw the 2017 eclipse and remember the 360 degree “sunset.” Interesting that it bothered Bree and Duke but none of the others. This year my backyard was 99.1% totality and one alley light came on briefly but it was nothing like 2017. That 0.9% really made a difference. Thanks so much for sharing your experience up in northern N.Y.!
Jim and Brenda, Thanks for tracking the Solar Eclipse on the farm and Paul Smith College. It was amazing to watch on your channel.
Seven years ago I was in Nebraska during a total eclipse, it was very interesting. Brenda said it best "what a strange light." That was the one thing I wasn't expecting, the light after the eclipse didn't look right for a few minutes.
Two videos in one day. It doesn’t get any better than this!!!!
Our peepers also started and stopped as the light came back.
This video was great! I'm in Minnesota & it's been very cloudy all day, so now I experienced the eclipse though you!! 😂 Thank you!! I totally enjoyed it!! 😊💕
Thankyou Brenda and Jim for sharing the eclipse with us AMAZING dont you think.lve seen it once in England uk and l found it so exciting and spooky at the same time.l do remember it going very cold and the birds went silent.Thats the power nature has..... oh my goodness so glad l witnessed it fantastic thankyou dear friends 👏👏👏👏
I experienced an eclipse when I was working and living in the Channel Islands (UK) we were literally sitting on the top of a cliff... eerie, atmospheric, a great time to be alive on our planet...
Hello Brenda and Jim, I watch your videos very often. They are somehow... relaxing, comforting, warm, reassuring? I don't know exactly.. but they make me feel good anyway...so thankyou so much for sharing with us...from Victoria Australia :))
IT'S BIBLICAL............THE BEST IS YET TO COME.
It is writting in the Bible about these solar events.... NOT the other way around
Mother Gaia, a new beginning- love and light ❤️ always.
I really appreciate you folks sharing this amazing event. Sadly, where I live, it was a full, grey, rainy day with heavy clouds cover. Thank you much for your excellent view on the farm. 💖
Thanks for sharing this! 💯
Great eclipse coverage from the vantage points of the farm and woods!
That was awesome:)! Thank you.
I've seen two total solar eclipses in my life here in Oregon, 1979 and 2017. I've become a solar eclipse junkie, LOL. I was thinking about traveling to Texas or Oklahoma to see this one but it didn't work out schedule wise. Total solar eclipses are truly amazing and special!! Hope you enjoyed it.
PG here. What a wonderful surprise to see a video on Tuesady. This was a very good video. Great subject. It was surprising to see the horses spooked. Loved the two different shots from 2 places.
I think the best thing was the extra WHJ video.
Guessing horses won't care a bit because they have more sense than most people. But cool to witness when it comes right over you. I was in one years ago and the shadows was the most interesting to me.
Oh we saw the full eclipse to it was amazing got quit dark here to ❤thanks for sharing your experience with us Jim and Brenda
I continue to be impressed with the pulling power of the Suffolk colts compared to the older horses.
Jim you are so correct. Humans want to look at everything. Animals just don't care. The horses in your yard were just going about their day. 😅
Thank you for sharing. 🎉
I really enjoyed your coverage. We were in the full zone for the last eclipse and it was something. All the birds quieted down, everything got still, and our yard light came on also.
When we had a total eclipse, all my animals came in thinking it was fee3d time, very interesting.
Thanks so much Brenda and Jim for sharing the glory of Our God, the eclipse. In Arizona it didn't get real dark. Totally cool!❤❤❤
It was so awesome to share the Great Eclipse '24 w yall. Glad Wm got to be there too. Oh my goodness. It was spooking for the kids too That was exciting! . The sun is back. Ty😊 love ya ❤
Oh thank you so very much for this video.
I'll bet that the horses didn't care one bit about the eclipse. It didn't even get dark here in Florida. The horses are wondering why they haven't been put in the barn and fed when it got dark. Stay safe in the woods Jim God bless y'all
Here in Sherwood Park Ab, Canada we got 23 %, yet the Eastern part of Canada Totality,,,,, amazing you filmed this,,,,, he brought you out of darkness into the light lol,,,, great work with the trio,,,,, and Skippy you are the boss
I am south of you at Wetaskiwin, Ab🇨🇦 I just watched the Live Stream on CBC. They were bouncing back and forth from Mexico to US to Canada mainly Niagara Falls, Ont. to the Eastern Coast as it followed the path of totality. 🇨🇦 Saw all the stages at the various times👏👌🏼
I remember my dad talking about an eclipse when he was young and people thought it was the end of the world.
Hi Jim & Brenda, in the UK we just don’t have the conditions necessary to see the Eclipse as you do, so thanks to the both of you for sharing this event with us.
If you watch television, they act like this has never happened before! Thank you.
At 3pm it was totally dark in DALLAS
Thanks for the 2 videos!!!
What a treat !!!
That was so cool. Thanks for sharing the eclipse.
Those look like some wicked nice logs you're cutting.
Thank you for sharing with us.
Here in Saskatchewan we had about 1/4 of the moon covering the bottom 7 o'clock
position. Did not notice any change in the light till it cleared up, then could tell it was brighter out.
I'm in mid Michigan and it got pretty shaded with an odd hue to everything and was much cooler than earlier in the day. Was very sunny and 70 degrees and then went dim and closer to 60. Cool to witness.
Thanks for sharing. Wonder if Bill and Barron had a real quick nap 😴while it was dark while they were standing there.Good thing horses have night vision for them to see you Brenda and not run over you. Neat hearing 👂🏻them making the sucking sound through the mud! Cool video. 🌞🌖🌗🌘🌚🌒🌓🌔🌞🤠🇨🇦
I believe animals will take care of themselves! They have a natural instinct!
Lol where's the horses glasses 😅😅
Thanks for the ECLIPSE report - appreciate the visual in your area !
Thank you for the extra video on the eclipse in your area Brenda and Jim. Here in Barnhart, MO got little darker outside street lights came on but otherwise no real darkness.
Thanks for letting us experience the total eclipse.
In olden times an eclipse was an eerie and nervous event just like your horses experienced.
All the best from
Paddy in Ireland.
Thank you for your unique and wonderful coverage of the eclipse as it happened at Paul Smiths and your farm. To see and hear the reactions of the animals was brilliant! We haven’t had a total eclipse in the UK since 1999, but this experience is something none of us will ever forget. Thank you.
Thanks Brenda. Thanks Jim. Cooooool video footage! - ACD
Too overcast here in SW B.C. today...raining all day...bummer...TFS!
Two days in one what a deal .
😢Thank you both for sharing the eclipse with us. You did a fantastic job Brenda. I am so familiar with your fields and buildings it was very easy to almost feel I was there. Definitely a video to keep and watch again and again. Your 'Amature Productions' are far more interesting than those from TV, etc.
Us on this side of the pond didn't see the eclipse....it was raining and overcast anyway.😢
Hi Skip ...do you ever stop running❤❤? You must sleep sound every night.
Take care all.
Thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing the eclipse. It is somewhat like a over cast, thank you for the experience.
Nice job on covering the eclipse 😀 that was cool
the best eclipse coverage today
Good Video, Ya'll ...God Bless Working Horses with Jim & Brenda
I was surprised at how dark it got in northern Ohio. Didn't get dark until last few mins before totality. Chickens started to roost. Horses didn't even care. Kept on grazing
It got a lot darker there than it did at my mom's house in NW Ohio. Even though only a very small sliver was showing at the top side of the sun, it was about like a cloud passing by.
Now that was awesome….we never got a total eclipse, so it was not as dramatic as that in your video. Thanks and God bless.
At 10:36 on the video I could see a planet, it lasted until 10:46. It was really neat. We had darkness for 3 minutes in Indiana, were we are. It caused 6 or 7 planets to be able to be seen. Glad you all got to experience it. Blessings to you both.
Near the RI border in MA and it didn't get dark like it did there, but was still an awesome sight.
I hadn't realised there would be bright clouds on the horizon at the farm.
We are not gonna see it as it is cloudy here in Mn
Your portion of the eclipse was the best visual for us out of the 3 other channels broadcasting the event so far. Thanks. Being in Maryland, not able to see it.
On the farm, you can hear lots of crickets!
Awesome eclipse coverage. We were out in the countryside near Indianapolis (great viewing). We didn't notice any changes in the wildlife (geese, frogs, wrens, bunnies) behavior, but we weren't near horses and cows. It was interesting to note your horses' reactions. Thanks for sharing!
I enjoyed the full coverage of the eclipse event. I've never seen that done before. Thanks for sharing. The animals seemed to take it all in stride.
Like everyone else here in the North east. I sat on my deck in a lawn chair with my Welding Mask on. but I did notice as some of the clouds filtered out the sun my auto darkening mask shut off and I had to stop looking at it. So went and got my old mask which was not auto darkening and finished watching the total eclipse. It will be the last one that I will see. (age here 81) so nice to share that with all. one of Nature's wonders. enjoy it and them and your family whilst you can . Jim and Brenda thanks for sharing your experiences also. God speed. ECF
My chickens went to roost when the eclipse started making it a little dark. We’re in south western Ohio, and we were supposed to have a 97.8 eclipse. I was surprised that it didn’t get darker. We watched a pair of doves go to roost also. They have been nesting in a pine next to our kitchen window for years. The pine got knocked down in the tornado, and they built a new nest in the pine about 20 ft. away.
The birds think night is coming by the way they’re singing.
Wow...it got really dark for you....Here in central Florida, I got darker but not at all like you. For us more like just a heavy cloudy day.
We’re in Indiana or horses did not act nervous. I hope you enjoyed the eclipse ! ❤
Wonderful, thank you!
Thanks for the double videos, very nice to see what happens at both places!
