- On this video we are doing some MAJOR cleaning up at my fixer upper house!! I have literally never seen my house looking this amazing... I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!
Hey there! My name is Abby and I recently bought a MAJOR fixer upper house. I am SO excited to work on fixing it up this old house and turning it into my dream home. I can't wait to take you on this journey with me! I am planning to DIY as much as I can and learn so much about home renovations along the way. I am starting out totally clueless so I am sure it will be a grand adventure! I have been watching from day one. A sad old house has a wonderful new life with a beautiful young woman to enjoy many years ahead.
From someone who has lived with uneven floors, you want to level them out now. It’s not that big a deal at this stage of your build.
From the basement you prop up the sagging joists with floor jacks. When floors are level upstairs, downstairs you sister in 2 x 10’s beside each joist, then secure them to each other. Trying to place furniture on uneven floors is a nightmare. Rugs do not help. Tall furniture against the wall leans forward, tables and chairs wobble, lamps are at a slight angle and wind up clocks won’t run because they’re not level. Over time the problem on gets worse. Trust me, you’ll be glad you leveled those floors now. Makes a huge difference even just walking around. Sometimes sisters are right. 😉
I think if you sanded your floors and refinish them you may be surprised by how pretty they good be.
The window over the bathroom door looks really great! It seems the right thing to do to use the part that you could save and reincorporate in the house. It's part of the house's history!

I'm not strong or handy with power tools, but I always contribute to a construction job by keeping the area clean and organized.

Your house is really starting to come together! It will be so beautiful when done. Then you will want to make a big pantry in the basement, then fix the garage, and landscaping. Whew! We'll be watching you for a while. Yes!!!

I've done many old houses (as I have mentioned before.) I just painted the floors which was often done on older houses and it makes it easy to clean. Jim Robinson, Gorham, ME)
I usually motivate myself to clean up something that may seem overwhelming but telling myself… ok let’s see how much I can get done in an hour and see what I can accomplish… that usually works well for me!!!

You could put some hardwood squares under each radiator leg. Change the thickness of each one inorder to get the tops to be the same. Stain the squares to match the floor, and I doubt your eye will notice the different thicknesses. Worth a try??

I think I’d start by vacuuming and clearing as you go. Good luck today and always.

It’s amazing what just sanding and polishing wood floors will do. In my last house, I sanded them, then water-popped (brings out the grain of the wood) them, and they ended up selling the house. They weren’t perfect, but they were beautiful.

Love the reuse of the antique glass piece for the transom window. It would have also made an awesome window in one of the bathrooms.
Exterior yard will also be a joy to see how you create an environment for the home.

Great job Abby! I give you a lot of credit for doing all you have done. Perhaps if you sanded the floors and lightly stained them it would look great.
The cleaner the site is the faster the job goes.

Sandblast the paint off the beautiful wood floor that is underneath all that paint. You will loove the wood floors.

That window is so beautiful over the upstairs bathroom. It looks so nice cleaning it up as Jay and Trudy helping out. I started watching 2 days later but did go back to the beginning. Your house has come a long way.

Congrats on what ever you did to fix the audio, it's been so much better the past few videos. Yes, clean & tidy always makes for a better work environment. I'd like to see you get a working toilet in soon, 2 years is a long time to go without having one.
I know you're a ways from interior doors, but I would consider one for the basement stairs. Seems it would make the house feel a bit warmer & surprised you don't have any critters exploring the house. It looks good, soon all the fun will begin, picking out finishes and fixtures!

The house looks really nice but your not going to do anything to the floors? I would at least have them sanded and re-stained or something. Love the window that you kept over the bathroom door it looks amazing. Many blesssings
You continue to amaze me! I love the transome over thr door. I have alit of vintage light fixtures. My husband rewired them, i used in our home for many years. If you might possibly be interested in them,let me kno. They came out our first house. It was built in 1920. Id live to gift them to you.

So many things to say about this! I can relate to how satisfying it is to clean out the workspace. My daughter and I finished the second half of the attic a few years ago, and I still remember tossing materials three stories down and making sure the mail man wasn't coming around the corner! Well done cleaning it all up! Next is paint, right? Oh, I have to say I admire all the straight walls and perfect corners in your house. I bet it wasn't all straight to begin with! Someone knows how to pick out straight framing materials and doing it right! And you, Abby, just think of the experience you have gained in the last two years! Fabulous! Finally a recommendation. Maybe you already know this, but I discovered last year that Benjamin Moore has outstanding ceiling paint. I've never used it until I painted a bathroom for a co worker and was stunned to see the coverage. In the past i've used other ceiling paints and had to do several coats in order to make it look nice. But, I bet if you prime your ceilings and then do one coat of BM that you may call it a day. Others may have something else to say about this. Last year I was looking to touch up a couple of ceilings and decided to go buy a gallon of BM. I'm so glad I did. I ended up doing one coat only, and after wondering if this was going to work since it was hideously blotchy at first, once it dried, it was perfect! I'm in love. Looking forward to seeing you go to it with roller and paint!
Abby you need a big wet and dry vacuum it will help cut down on the drywall dust instead of sweeping. Looks great young lady!
You can light sand those floors and put polyethylene on them . Old house like I lived in had rugs that could be moped and waxed with the edge of the wood floors stained or painted brown I'm 77 years old so you know the house was old I loved the old floors I can't remember the name of those rugs also the window looks so pretty can't wait till the end😊

A friend of mine would sprinkle saw dust on the floor to weigh down the drywall dust! No worries though. There will still be more sweeping. 😅

You can level your floors with floor stone it’s a cement product . Then lay new floors .

I’m not very knowledgeable about construction but those floors could come alive with sanding and restaining them. Nothing like the original wood. And I guess it makes sense if they need leveling, I’d have that done while it’s still at this stage. It’s going to be beautiful! I’m so excited for you!
