    Nice, good battle featuring America's premier Aegis Class cruisers. They were originally built to be destroyers, using the Spruance Class destroyer hull and plant but their technology and firepower were so advanced that the Navy classified them as cruisers. I'd like to point out it's pronounced with a long i, "Tyco" vs "Tico." The Moskva was a decent destroyer platform in the 1980's but was never a match for a Tyco. Ticonderoga was commissioned in 1985. Tons of technology. They used a Tyco to shoot down a satellite over the Pacific a few years ago, they had to modify an SM2 to get it to reach low-earth orbit, but what was really amazing was how Aegis was able to track a satellite. When Tyco came into existence it scared the hell out of the Russians, for sure. If you could do a matchup between a Moskva and a Spruance I think it would be interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Once they realized the mistake it was likely to late to get the system online. If you look at the pictures of her before she sank her radars, and weapon system were not set in active defense positions you would expect. This presumed that the Moskva's systems actually still all worked... It would have ended much sooner it seems.
    Plus there were only 3 Moskva class vessels built with only 2 still in service up against 21 still in service Ticonderogas... so in a realistic engagement it would likely be a 1:n challenge and the battle might have been more skewed. This even without the likely engagement of many assets of other classes.
    I think we could project that all Russian naval assets are probably at well below 100% operational status - they have been starved of funds for decades and this was a "flagship" asset.

      Im not 100% convinced that would have been the case. The Neptunes hit her in the side while the Harpoons, attacking bow on, climb and dive which may well have set her on fire but would probably not have ripped the hull open. I was going to say, just look at the heavy cruiser HMS Exeter getting hit by seven 11" shells, or the 1600 ton destroyer HMS Onslow getting hit by three 8" shells. But then I looked up just how large the bursting charges were on those shells as opposed to the shell weight and theyre barely a tenth of the size of these missiles.

    • @Elthenar
      @Elthenar 2 роки тому +4

      It's also believed that only one of the Neptunes detonated. As to the Harpoons coming down on the bow, it could have been as bad or worse. The Moskva had a lot of munitions on top. A hit from above, bow on, may well have caused major secondary detonations from hitting the Moskva's own missile batteries.

    Ty-kahn-de-ROH-gah. Named after a famous battle of the American Revolution where the American army, with militia, marched north through heavy snow to British held Ft. Ticonderoga in upper New York, captured it, then in an epic march south through the same deep snow, dragged the cannons on sleds to Boston, where General Washington had them deployed on the heights above Boston Harbor, threatening the British who were forced to abandon the city. I believe it was general Nathaniel Greene who was in command of that little exercise. He became the most trusted general in Washington's very shaky officer cadre.

    One other point, that several folks have mentioned previously, is that the anti-air supersonic SM2s would have likely have been used in the anti-surface mode once within radar line of sight as well. The AI may not have been programed to account for this option? Those very fast anti-surface mode SM2s would have likely achieved a mission kill on the Moskva well before before the second (and maybe even the first) 127mm cannon shells hit and certainly before the second was unmasked and completed the job.

    If the Iowas had been refit to operate independently instead of as part of a carrier group and off shore artillery duty, it would have both Phalanx and Aegis systems. With these logical upgrades the one on one might look different. Most US war ships, are designed and equipped to operate as part of a group not alone. (excepting submarines) I'd like to see a carrier by itself vs a Kirov class.

      As in a reply to someone else, I'll just copy/paste the info at the bottom with an emphasis on the video not accurately portraying the ship's offensive capabilities.
      I love the old battleships as much as anyone and one of the four takes the name of my home state, but they had Phalanx and Tomahawks installed for Desert Storm in the early 90's and fired their 16" guns. The fact is, open sea and shore bombardment just doesn't warrant the running cost of such large specialized ships. The crew alone requires thousands, so that combined with diesel engines and running costs will be insane, second only to daily carrier operations I imagine. When there are numerous 127mm and 76mm cannons, along with 25mm and 30mm autocannons, plus multiple .50 cal machine gun posts throughout the strike group, in addition to no less than seven different types of missiles carried within your average strike group, either in dedicated launch tubes, RIM launchers, or VLS tubes including the capability to hit targets on the sea or land up to 1,000 miles at present (and newer missiles will offer ranges at 3,000 miles), there just isn't the demand for large guns at a large cost, with only four ships even available if they were all operational. That would result in combat availability of around 25% at most in any given theater and it would still have to travel with a carrier group for protection (especially versus subs and any massive time-on-target attack).
      "The US Cruisers and Destroyers all carry up to two helicopters too. They have either a surface warfare or anti-submarine warfare weapons loadout and a suite of sensors, including surface radar and infrared sensors with data link back to the strike group. DCS also doesn't program in the fact the Cruiser's VLS tubes can fire Tomahawk Cruise Missiles and SM-2 missiles at surface ships. It doesn't rely purely on the 127mm guns and limited supply of harpoons."

    1. The Moskva could ot fire sooner, because it could not see the Tico until it came over the Horizon. Neither ship can detect the other beyond line of site, without an air asset to give them over the horizon radar ccoverage.
    2. The Moskva's 130mm cannons are not design for ship to ship combat, only for anit-air. When they were firing, they were trying to take out the incoming shells, not the TICO itself. That's why Tico was not damaged.
    3. By waypointing the ships until they crossed, you prevented the A/I from maneuvering the ships to their best advantage. For instance, the reason that the Muskva's forward air defenses failed, is because a) The gatlings ran out of ammo, and the ship could not turn to bring other guns into the fight. b) The Harpoon where inside the range of the vertical launched missiles, and their close in air defense missiles are back near the hangar, they could no be brought to bear, do to lack of maneuver.
    4) The SM2 has recently been tested in an anti-ship capacity.

      riend what "other guns" do you think the russian ship had to bring to bear? Also the AEGIS uses satellites to see not just over the horizon but with a 1500 mile range missile onboard to see wherever on the planet they want to see.

    • @nunya3163
      @nunya3163 2 роки тому

      @@daddski1 1) The Slaava class cruiser has 4 more banks of the Gatling air defense guns located mid-ship, 2 to port, and 2 to starboard. There are also two pop-up missile launchers located in the aft section by the hangar. These are for their close in air defenses, and would have been the primary anti-missile defense at these ranges. But, because they are not vertical launchers, you have to turn the ship to give them line of site to the target.
      2) Clearly any satellite capabilities are not mapped into this simulator. Those capabilities are also not 100%, as you do not have 100% real time coverage of the entire planet. Also, in the simulation, they did not even use the helo which would also give them an over the horizon view.

    I'm not sure what era DCS is modeling here, but Harpoons were kind of an afterthought for the USN because the Soviets never provided a great deal of potential targets. The Ticos are now capable of carrying SM-6 missiles, which have a light anti-ship mode, and Block V Tomahawk missiles with an anti-ship mode. They may also stick around long enough to get the new stealthy Long Range Anti-Ship Missile. They also carry ASROC missiles, which drop anti-submarine torpedos, which theoretically should be able to hit surface vessels, or the Moskva specifically.
    The Slava class cruisers have both S-NA-Grumble long range SAMs and S-NA-4 Gecko short range SAMs, so theoretically at least one should have fired at the Harpoons. They were coming in head on, so that may have been the issue there. Both vessels also have torpedo launchers, so if they got a little closer they could have used those.
    Operationally, both ships would have probably been flying multirole helicopters, which would have extended their detection range of surface targets. The Moskva would have fired its antiship missiles earlier and ran. They were built for two roles, lobbing massive missiles at US carriers, and providing air cover for Soviet submarines to also lob massive missiles at US targets. The Ticos were designed to escort carriers and shoot down said missiles, so that carrier aircraft could successfully prosecute those firing them.

    Russian ships are much more powerful in the anti surface warfare mission than US ships because of the different philosophies of each navy. The US believe in the power projection capabilities of the aircraft carrier. Its escorts were all designed for one thing, to protect the carrier from air and missile attack and anti submarine warfare. Anti surface warfare is mostly a forgotten mission because carrier strike groups will project power and destroy Russian ships before they can get in range of their anti ship missiles.

They have no AWACS, no ability to differentiate friendlies from foes and use anti-air defense systems without shooting down their own planes, (one reason they can't achieve air superiority over Ukraine) and now we see how pitiful their fire fighting, and damage control abilities are. The damage looked severe, it is sad that Russian sailors died, but better them than the Ukrainian citizens on the receiving end of all the cruise missiles that won't be fired from Moskva.

    they didn't shoot each other from 60 miles because they couldn't see each other from that far away. it's called radar horizon, the curvature of the earth blocks the view. Moskva's CIWS probably ran out of ammo after shooting down 5 or 6 Harpoons straight. Moskva for some reason fired its Sandbox missiles one by one making them very easy to shoot down; in reality they would have tried to get all their missiles to land simultaneously to saturate the air defenses of Tico. Tico would have done the same in return with the Harpoons. Moskva also has good air defense missiles of overlapping coverage, which it did not use for some reason. SM-2, SM-2ER, and SM-6 all have anti-surface modes, and Moskva has heavyweight torpedo tubes which it should be able to employ against surface ships. Also both ships have 1 or 2 helicopters but I believe only the Tico's birds have anti-ship capability

      It is possible because of the approach angle the fire control radar for the air defense missiles of the Moskva were masked by the forward search radar in the simulation. Also the history of combat has shown that most missiles are actually defeated by electronic counter measures. Unfortunately the simulation for ships for DCS is rather rudimentary. Command: Modern Air Naval battles would probably do it much better.
