Hello, so I installed a new hard drive and I followed what to do. When I see the question mark, I put my Snow Leopard disc in. The Apple symbol shows up but just freezes and doesn't go anywhere. The iMac I have is from 2009. Any suggestions?
+Chris Nibeck if you have another Mac with a DVD drive and FireWire you could put it in target disk mode connected to the Mac that you installed the hard drive and install from it
thanks for the response back. I went out and got a flash drive to use a bootable usb and it worked. So I guess the optical drive or install disc were the problem. Your video was very helpful.
Can u tell me why I did the same stuff you did just with a Mac OS X 10.11 disk but it don’t load up at all. Shows a loading bar but when it gets to full nothing happens and if I hold ALT it just shows me with a base OS X system
I was never able to use a newer OS on an older iMac.... Had to work my way up. Apple doesn't make sure their newer OSes install disks are bootable on older.
Chris Nibeck would it be possible to get any form of GarageBand on 10.6.8? Because I got GarageBand 6.0.5 but it says it can not open because it is not in the right format
@@ActionXD I believe so but alas I am not by a 10.6.8 computer right now.... I still have one that I use with Logic and an M-Audio A to D D to A adapter
Didn't work for me. Bummer! I have a mid 2011 27" iMac and my mac was randomly crashing. My smart status and system diagnostics always said everything was ok. After a few years of running it like that I finally got the app drive dx and it said my drive was failing. I backed up my data and ordered a new upgraded hard drive from owc. I did the install everything went smooth, but now I cant get my osx disc to boot. I have the original install disk my mac came with it's in good condition. I get the folder with the question mark, then insert the DVD, then get an apple logo with the spinning sundial then the screen goes white and stays like that. I called apple support and they ran me through all the start up key commands and nothing worked. I have an appointment in the morning at a mac repair store not the apple store. So hopefully they figure it out.
@@cnibeck yes, I did. Even though I had the appointment set up I kept trying my start up disk and finally after spending all day until about midnight my mac finally decided to read my osx start up disk. I was able to startup snowleapard and start doing some updates to try and get to high Sierra, my mac worked for a couple hours then crashed. I got fed up and went to sleep, then in the morning I took my mac apart again because in the past I had suspected my video card might be going out on me so I decided to bake my graffics card in the oven for 10 minutes and double check all my connections and put it all back together and my mac started up like brand new. I cancelled my appointment and continued with all my software updates and I got back to high Sierra where I did a time machine migatration of all my external harddrive data. My mac's running like never before. It was worth the hours of work and money. One thing that sucked was By calling apple support for help they flagged my mac because I told them I did a harddrive replacement. I didn't realize that would happen but it did. Now I can't get help from apple for that specific device.
Hello, I have just replaced the hard drive in my late 2009 iMac. Now I only see the question mark in the folder, I do not have my original disk. Any thoughts on how I can get it restored? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Thanks Chris. I bought recover disks off eBay. Cannot find mine. I can see the drive and formatted it. But it says can’t install OS. It’s snow leopard. I’m guessing the disk is particular to the machine. Uughh if I buy from os from apple do you think that would work? Any other suggestions to get OS back on machine? Thank you so much.
I recently got a 2008 iMac with no HDD installed, I installed a new HDD and tried to install snow leopard, and no matter what I do, it just tells me it can't be installed on this system, I even made a partition and changed the date on the computer to an earlier date, and nothing is working.
@@cnibeck Sorted it, I contacted apple, and they sent me a link to download the original OS for the iMac, Now running patched Catalina and running pretty well.
are you still using this iMac? if you are, i would get a t7 Samsung SSD, tape it to the back of the iMac, format it and restore from time machine back up, and boot from the T7, will be much faster overall :)
@@cnibeck yeah, nothing wrong with mechanical drives in 2015 :) but if you are still using this iMac, T7 Samsung SSD external would be a great upgrade for it, just tape it to the back and boot from it :)
I believe upon startup you can press Cmd + R to open Internet Recovery mode and install macOS on to your hdd. This is a late comment but I figured why not try to help anyways

The next thing I would do would be take the new drive out and connect it to a SATA to USB adapter and see if you can see it on a computer that way.... It might be the Sata Electronics on your motherboard or your cable
I would look for a 10.6.8 ( or any of the 10.6s) because you can get the App store at that point and then upgrade up from there. Remember to install your Adobe apps before you upgrade too much because the Adobe installers will not work on later OSs.
