Lyrics for "Tavern Boys", a filk using the tune of "Boys of Bedlam"
1. For to buy myself a cider
I took me to the tavern,
The Baron Crew serve a mighty brew
And they asked me what I'm having
chorus
So I sing bonny boys, bonny drunk boys,
Tavern boys are bonny,
For the Barons are fair and they've all facial hair
And they'll serve you drink for money.
2. I went down to the campsite kitchen
For to get some food, so I tell ye.
Well bread's a bore but you drink much more
When there's food to line your belly.
3. Wee Jamie's at the tap now,
Wee Brusi's pulling cider,
Skull it fast down for sure I've found
It's best when it's inside yer.
4. Pryderi took my tankard
And to the brim he filled it,
I drained it quick and I called Yorrick,
But he said my tab I'd killed it.
5. For to buy myself a cider
I took me to the tavern,
The Baron crew pull a fearsome brew
And they asked what I was having.
Original recording - Hickey and Sparks.

The good thing about finding this posted is to know the song's been heard on UA-cam more than 40,000 times now. Thanks to those who liked it.
Many apologies - we did credit you in the notes, and we honestly thought we'd provided a link to your recording, with a request to go there. That has been amended. If you'd like the clip taken down, we will do so.
@@blessedherman985 Thank you. That's all that's needed. I appreciate it. I've removed my first post, edited this one, and liked the page.
Does Susan know about this thread? If not I can let her and Greg know the next time I see them at Ren Fest.
Instablaster.
This is the only version I've seen on UA-cam that matches the way we'd drink and sing it at Renfaire. The increase in speed is consistent with the feel of a rock song. I believe this is the best way to perform the tune.
Too bad none of my friends like this type of music. Too good.
Thank you!
Idk if u still alive but u are a legend they aren’t
@@shepard4245 thanks man, so far I'm still going strong
For those who don't know, the front singer on this (Susan Hickey) is now Susan Csikos and she and Greg perform at Renaissance Festivals throughout the country by the name of "The Rambling Sailors". Very nice folks. Check them out here on UA-cam.
That’s amazing! I just saw her at my local renfaire this year!
Interesting ARRANGEMENT of "Bedlam Boys", but the melody & bulk of the lyrics were composed & researched by "The Halliard" (Nic Jones, Dave Moran & Nigel Paterson), in the 1960s (copyright Mollie Music). The text was first published in Thomas D'Urfey's "Pills to Purge Melancholy" (1720).
Love the slow build up in pace to this version. It's easily the second best version of this song after Steeleye Span's.
Oh, don't shake his dog, ok? Bedlam boys are bonnie!
Fantastic version.
Thank you!
I love this song!
Thank you!
What a fabulous version :)
epic song :D
bedlam boys ARE bonnie!!
haha, I also find Bedlam Boys bonnie, but I can´t sing that fast, great stuff, thanx
In the carrot we trust! See you at College Wars. Sincerely, an Ursulan.
this song is kinda freaky
The person who wrote this paid to see the 'crazies' in some asylum and everything in this song is what the 'crazies' said.
Your definitely not Irish pagan then.
@@user-rq4qp9tf9n nope us pagans wrote it.
I wouldn't say that for sure cause it's not really a pagan song per say but rather a song about the asylum of bedlam. About an old crazy woman who would travel bare feet to the asylum to see her mad "lover"
Still less bonnie than the bedlam boys

"Bedlam" was ( and might still be ) the infamous British 'insane asylum'.......this folk tale describes life for the "patients" ( inmates ).......
Who are the singers? The voices are familiar but I just can't place them.
Penny Kunter Steeleye Span. X
I might be completely wrong. But it sounds like Maddy Prior and June Tabor. :)
Oh, I can tell you that. Susan Hickey and me. We performed this 25 years ago. Blessed Herman is in trouble now. See note on link. ua-cam.com/video/HvqIH0kkl60/v-deo.html
@@TheSoundOfDistantThunder No, it's me and Susan Hickey but I'm pleased with the guess.
@@23seana73 Nope. See my other post.
starts good, ends up way too fast IMO
For me Mary. Starts off good and gets Grrreeaaat!!!!
IMHO.
Xx
The idea is to play the dancers into the ground. Makes it harder to sing tho-
@@realetreasures6443 We didn't have any trouble with it.
We sometimes sang it faster...

Any other Irish pagans here?
It’s not about that
