A place in the town of Horicon called The Blue Heron offers boat tours into the marsh, some of the tours are made with birders in mind.
Buena Vista Grasslands in winter for snowy owls, short-ear owls, rough-legged hawks and other Winter migrants. Pheasant Branch Conservancy in Middleton (Madison)... incredible Spring migration location, especially for warblers, and a wonderful prairie area for Fall migration sparrows.
Definitely two great spots. BV was close to making it in because of the unique species that live there such as the Prairie Chickens. Pheasant Branch also great in pretty much any season.
The Pine barrens is one of my favorite ecosystems!!
Those would be awesome places in Wisconsin for birding.
Minnesota girl here, I lived just across the St Croix. Someday I'm going to explore those two states and maybe MI too.
Thanks for sharing!
Nice video. For me personally Necedah would be high on the list as well.
Whooping Cranes, Red-headed Woodpeckers, Golden Eagles and more! Definitely a great spot
Wonderful video! Thx!
Thanks for watching!
I grew up in the area near Necedah and used to go see the flocks of White Pelicans at Necedah NWR when they came in. Whooping Crane too of course, especially the colts. Good for Bobolinks too. There would be HUGE flocks of sandhills along the creek bank by my grandfather's farm and a couple taller white heads of Whoopers out there, and the guys from Necedah would usually show up. Kinda would think Necedah should either be on this list, or make it a top SIX places in order to have it! But yeah, Horicon Marsh is an excellent #1 choice. Thanks! Cannot wait to revisit several of these as a birder.
Thanks for watching and for the comments!
ill have to keep these places in mind whenever we bird wisconson!
Let us know when you come down here and we'll make a vid!
Badgerland Birding sounds good guys! Same goes for you if you’re ever in Ontario!
What about the Trempealeau area above Weyeleusing?! It has an self guided auto tour and many rare birds like Kirtland's warbler call it home.
Definitely also a great birding location!
I love camping and birding in Perrot State Park.
Here Dane County has best bird show I seen with Orioles, Blue Birds Eagles Hawks many Of variety of woodpeckers scarlet Tangers Sandhills cranes Turkeys 🦃 wood Ducks 🦆 indigo bunting and native like Blue Jays cardinals chickadees and finches
Dane County definitely has some really great places to bird!
But where is Horicon Marsh in Wisconsin? I am from Seattle. You guys should take a trip to the Pacific Northwest to add to your list. And then show it here.
We'd love to go to the Pacific Northwest! As for where Horicon Marsh is in the state, the map here should give you a pretty good idea :) Thanks for watching! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horicon_Marsh
Great work as always, guys! Have you ever or would you ever consider birding in Illinois? If you have, do you know of any birding hot spots I could check out? Haven't had much luck yet.
Hey, Nick! Thanks! We have done some birding in Illinois, mostly to find Eurasian Tree Sparrows and Monk Parakeets. Would you be interested in looking for those? Otherwise if you’re on Facebook, this page might be a good place to start facebook.com/groups/illinosbirding/?ref=share
Badgerland Birding Thanks for the reply! I am interested in all types of birds. My favorites are blue jays and water birds like herons. Rare birds like tanagers or waxwings are nice too. Really anywhere you can think of. Nature preserves, lakes, whatever. I am just outside of the South Side if that helps at all.
Dixon Waterfowl Refuge near Hennepin, IL is excellent. It's next to the Illinois River and is a mixture of wetlands, forest and prairie, so it attracts a wide array of birds.
Excellent site! Thank you. But,
But what?
I’m about 4 hours from Horicon. Do you guys have an opinion on the best time of year to visit? Any times to avoid? We did Wyalusing a few months ago and it didn’t disappoint!
I think spring is the best time to visit because then you have all the migrants in color, second is fall, then summer, then winter. It's pretty dead in Winter. We also did a video about our favorite places to visit at Horicon. I believe this was in late spring/early summer. ua-cam.com/video/ILU8n3UFHc0/v-deo.html
@@BadgerlandBirding I remember seeing that video. Looks like next spring it is!
