i really want to learn BSL but i have ADHD and i really struggle to sit through long videos so i’m trying my best to actually sit and watch this but i will end up learning it somehow! i don’t know anyone who is deaf but i just think i might as well learn BSL because i’m going to come cross someone that speaks it at least once so anyway if your trying to learn like me just don’t give up because i’m sure you will need it!
I'm doing BSL 1 and I'm finding it hard going. This is the most helpful channel out there and beats the ones I've paid to subscribe to. It really is excellent. Thank you.
This is fab, Dan!! Your demonstrations are so good. I really like that you show the signs from a few angles - that really helps. I even like the music - it's soothing and makes concentrating and learning easier, for me anyway. Thank you! 💖
Clairey definitely seeing it from a side-on angle helps a lot, I’m practising these 100 words in front of the mirror (trying to master three a day while I get washed, etc,) I don’t imagine I’ll ever be fluent, but one never knows when someone who signs is going to come into your work and I think it’s always encouraging to be able to communicate with those who sign, to the best of your own ability, in a language they understand. I’m profoundly deaf in one ear, and the masks of Covid make it impossible to lip read, so I’m hoping more people will adopt a signing approach. It only has benefits for all...!
@@rainbowsandlove I completely agree! 😊 I'm the same - I'm not sure I'll ever be fluent, though I would like to be, but I try to pick up and practise what I can and maybe one day it will come in useful. I can imagine it must be very frustrating when you can't lip read because of masks at the moment. Wishing you all the best learning BSL 👍💗.
What I find difficult about BSL is the way that some words, such as "know" has a different sign to its own negative, e.g. "don't know" whereas in a spoken language the negation would be usually caused by some other word (e.g. "je sais" / "je NE sais PAS" in French). These videos are great, though. I'm addicted!
Really useful, thanks! Quick question, do verbs change at all when used in the past or future tense, or is the meaning just modified by any time indicators at the beginning of the sentence?
Verbs don't change in bsl for past/future it is modified by the time signs at the beginning of a sentence. For example when signing : I walk ('walk i' in bsl) or I walked (yesterday walk i) The base verb 'walk' stays the same.
After a laryngectomy, I can speak but it is a bit stressy. So I have been miming a lot, and writing. This shows me how to do it; much is I think pretty understandable at first look. I just have to practice. Many thanks.
Really love your clips, best revision during pandemic at home. I would love to do some formal signing for my level 3 exams. The No. indication is good that you know which one you'd like to emphasise or look back later.
my BSL teacher emphasises that when using directional verbs, such as tell, ask, explain, you should not 'say' me or you, as the direction of the sign indicates it.
I've been a job for 3 or 4 years now where I occasionally find myself having to interact with hearing impaired people. Those people usually have someone to help ineterpate for us. But I think it would be much better if I could interact with people directly, more professional, better manners of me, to do so. So in a bid to be better at my job I have taken it upon myself to learn BSL. Your videos are extremly helpful, thank you. I loved it... this is amazing you taught so many signs. I wanted to learn and learn again. I will practice a lot. thank you so much for your super helpful !! =)
how important are the hands you are using, im left handded and naturally try to do all the signs flipped, is it a habbit i should brake or as long as i am consistantly flipped will it still be understandbale ?
The BSL sign website says, or used to anyway "....you should use which ever hand you feel most comfortable using, but you must remember to always use the same hand as your dominant hand; by swapping hands you can cause much confusion with those trying to read you.”
@@algernonwhatsup2060 ahh cheers mate, i know this is going to sound daft, but do i also need to flip the other movements, e.g head shaking from left to right instead of right to left, o'r is it just important to get the overall expression right and consisrancy with the dominant hand ?
Try to use your dominant hand for all one-handed signs and let your dominant hand do the main movements for all two-handed signs. Swapping too often can cause confusion for the person you're signing to. For the other features of BSL (the head movements, facial expressions etc.), these are often referred to as non-manual features. These remain the same for both right and left-handers. Thanks for watching!
Hello Dan we love you're videos, I'm doing level 1 and need to learn seasons and weather, do you have a vid on it? we couldn't find any, my tutor was looking too. if not can you make a vid please. Thank you
As far as I know you use your dominate hand when signinf with one hand. SO if you're right handed use your right hand, if you're left handed.. well you get the idea..
I am right-handed but because this isn't mirrored I am signing with my left-hand :D I really hope that after quarantine I will be able to sign and use it at the restaurant I work at.
Thanks for this! Wondering if in sign, you'd use the same "must" sign in these different contexts... like for example: "he must go to the shop" (because he's required to) and "he must be here" (because we know it to be the case)
Thanks for this! I'm Deaf native ASL (US) and I'm going to a workshop in the UK and possibly grad school so trying to become fluent in BSL so my interpreter isn't super confused 😂 i find it really funny that we sign "whore" for "everything" (in BSL) and our "stop" is your "sure" 😆
I know it’s never wrong to use BSL, hearing or not, but I currently have hearing issues in my right ear. Unless you’re on my left, or close to me, I can’t hear clearly enough not to ask for a repetition is it bad that I’m signing? I don’t want to seem like I’m gatekeeping. I’m not deaf in that ear, and it’s being treated, but I guess I’m having some kinda imposter syndrome.
Hayley Moore If you are right handed then sign with your right hand - opposite if you are left handed. Don't intermix as this will confuse whom you are signing to.
My m8t who I have known for more than forty five years had a stroke and cannot speak and never will again.Im trying to teach him as well as myself.I’m not sure if he really wants too he gets very angry and aggressive frustrated .I’m lucky if I can get five minutes out of him .I know that’s all part of having a stroke but he was an angry man before he had a stroke.I give him 110 percent of myself. He keeps getting angry and thinks he can run away I’ll keep going and stick at it in the hope he can communicate with his children one day .now he thinks I’m his translator 😂 he only knows four words. after seven hours of them for words and me having to try and figure out what his saying I’m really tired mentally and physically.Holsey67 🇬🇧 thank you Dan I have learned so much thanks to you

Nice to know, hearing people take incentive to learn our language to keep us included. 🎉
I would like to join BSL ( commanding hands ) and learn as much as possible

i’m learning BSL because my mum is deaf so this is so much help
Its so great that you are doing this
Brilliant bro👏👏👏👏👏
Dan, should I use the lip pattern for all the words or just when the sign can mean different things?
brilliant indeed thank you
how important are the hands you are using, im left handded and naturally try to do all the signs flipped, is it a habbit i should brake or as long as i am consistantly flipped will it still be understandbale ?
The BSL sign website says, or used to anyway "....you should use which ever hand you feel most comfortable using, but you must remember to always use the same hand as your dominant hand; by swapping hands you can cause much confusion with those trying to read you.”
@@algernonwhatsup2060 ahh cheers mate, i know this is going to sound daft, but do i also need to flip the other movements, e.g head shaking from left to right instead of right to left, o'r is it just important to get the overall expression right and consisrancy with the dominant hand ?
@@montysvest Sorry for the delay. I'm a very basic learner myself so am not qualified to answer those questions.
Commanding Hands is a excellent channel, but if you want to check a left-handed signer, you could try BSL Charlie
Thank you
I’m just curious, does it matter which hand you use for these signs?
As far as I know you use your dominate hand when signinf with one hand. SO if you're right handed use your right hand, if you're left handed.. well you get the idea..
@@MrLondonGo cheersss
Remember, one hand is for consonants, and 1 hand is for vowels
To say 'I can', would I use the sign for 'me' and then the sign for 'can'? Thank you for the amazing videos!!
I am right-handed but because this isn't mirrored I am signing with my left-hand :D I really hope that after quarantine I will be able to sign and use it at the restaurant I work at.
Thank you so much
Thanks for this! Wondering if in sign, you'd use the same "must" sign in these different contexts...
like for example: "he must go to the shop" (because he's required to) and "he must be here" (because we know it to be the case)
Does it matter much if you sign with your left or right hand?
Thanks for this! I'm Deaf native ASL (US) and I'm going to a workshop in the UK and possibly grad school so trying to become fluent in BSL so my interpreter isn't super confused 😂 i find it really funny that we sign "whore" for "everything" (in BSL) and our "stop" is your "sure" 😆
05:40 is basically half the Four Weddings and Funeral church scene! lol
Hi 👋 I’m Honey Holland and l would like to know why do you do BSL?👋
Question, does it matter what hand does which? Does that change the sign?
Im assuming the sign would just be reversed. So yes would be the knocking motion on the left hand instead
I've been wanting to learn BSL for a long time.. maybe a silly question, but does it matter what hand you sign with or is the video mirrored?
Hayley Moore If you are right handed then sign with your right hand - opposite if you are left handed. Don't intermix as this will confuse whom you are signing to.
@@captainslog6739 Thank you 🙂
Should lip be used for both " True and Sure " please? They look to be the same strike on the left hand. Thank you.
sure uses mouth so make the sure movement with your lips and with a polite facial expression should do it
@@chickenchomper1897 Thank you :)
Is there a sign for ‘or’?
Adam Rose yh i can’t remember it but he does it in the numbers video at some point (1-1 billion)
Charlotte MacDonald thanks :)
I know this was a while ago and you're probably fluent now but if you still need it it's at 13:52 😂
hi, does anyone know what region these words are form in the uk? or if they apply to the whole country
bsl is British sign language. I would assume UK but I'm sure it's everywhere as well
My m8t who I have known for more than forty five years had a stroke and cannot speak and never will again.Im trying to teach him as well as myself.I’m not sure if he really wants too he gets very angry and aggressive frustrated .I’m lucky if I can get five minutes out of him .I know that’s all part of having a stroke but he was an angry man before he had a stroke.I give him 110 percent of myself. He keeps getting angry and thinks he can run away I’ll keep going and stick at it in the hope he can communicate with his children one day .now he thinks I’m his translator 😂 he only knows four words. after seven hours of them for words and me having to try and figure out what his saying I’m really tired mentally and physically.Holsey67 🇬🇧 thank you Dan I have learned so much thanks to you
does the hand matter? cause i do it with right...
Which dialect/region is this (as I sign some words differently)?
this is the standard
Generally british
do things change with tense? great video btw
No I don't think so
No. You just use a sign for "in the past" or "in the future". If you make it big, it's "a long time ago", if you make it little it's "recently".
You dont make the signs completed at all have you got one that like couples say to eachother my partner is deaf
Does it matter what hand you make the signs with. I think I’m doing it backwards 🤔
5:43 so that is the meaning of the sign you put in alot of the thumb-nails
I've been learning BSL at college and these are totally different signs to what we've learnt!?
Türkçe altyazı lütfen
what's the difference between please and thank you?
There is no difference in the sign itself, only what you say behind it. (As long as you say please behind the sign it will mean that)
Mouth and head movements are also key in bsl :/
👍👍
So the same movement can mean more than one thing. And different movements can mean the same thing
how do you know so much ???
☺️
may i ask a question? are you deaf sir? it's just a question.. or are you just teaching?
I'm india from
