Thank you. I am autistic and have severe anxiety, and I find it very hard to communicate verbally sometimes. This is very useful to me because a few of my friends and my physics teacher know BSL- so now if I know it and I have a non-verbal episode, I can communicate without writing everything out.
Same I’m autistic and going into high school tomorrow and I really don’t want to talk so I decided to learn BSL because I know a lot of the teachers know it plus I won’t be surprised if I do into a non verble episode too . Plus it gets anoying when u write so much you get a hand cramp
I was Santa last year for the local community. I used your videos to learn just a little signing incase it was needed. I actually signed to a child ( not brilliantly) to ask what he wanted for xmas, and his face lit up. im refreshing now for this year...just trying to find a course to go on.

As a teenager who is hard of hearing, might go deaf in the future and doesn't get special BSL classes, these videos really help me out, so thank you Dan plus team.
I was in doing my food shopping yesterday and was in a corner part of the shop next to an employee and another male. All of sudden, the fire alarm went off. I left my basket and did the step to leave but overheard male saying to the lady still working: "come, come". When I turned around, I was him pulling her by her arm (bless him, he was just trying to help) and very confused lady touching/pointing to her ear. I step back and asked her in BSL if she was ok. She showed me again that she was deaf. I showed her that "fire". God, this was my very first time. She said "thank you" and her smile touched me. Thank you for those clips. I promise to learn more x
Starting to learn sign language as I want to become a teacher and want to ensure I can communicate to students including those with hearing difficulties. So far your videos have been super helpful for breaking down movements so they're easy to see and follow. Thank you
I love your videos. I work in retail & I think BSL should be on the National Curriculum along with First Aid. Thank you so much. Today at work, the alarms went off & thanks to an amazing mum and your videos! We were both able to reassure her son that everything was ok. I didn't realise how essential BSL is till today. I don't know why it isn't taught in schools.
We were taught the alphabet at our primary school, but not whole words and phrases. So I could communicate with a deaf person but it would take forever 🥴
I am a primary teacher and find your videos really useful! We have many children that benefit from this. In reference to the comment above, this is something I've always said and feel strngly about- first aid and BSL should be part of the national curriculum! I would love to get to a confident stage of using BSL and start a school club, gradually building up to a signing choir!
It is a life long skill that I think everyone should know, you never know when you might need it and it’s just so considerate to be able to understand the other side of society
im learning bsl incase i meet any one deaf or a family member goes deaf and these videos have helped me so much i usually struggle learning things but your videos have made it so much easier thanking for making these videos and thanks for existing
I've been wanting to learn sign language for a while now due to my autism (Sadly, most of the time that I go non-verbal, I either force myself to speak or just write notes because I didnt know it) but it stopped me from processing the information due to most videos not breaking it down enough, but! your videos do just that. They break it down in a way that's easy for me to understand, and easy for me to pick up on words like please and good which are the same no matter what you're signing. It makes this so much easier for me. Thank you, Dan!!
I've just found this channel and have been wanting to learn BSL for a while now, as I have autism and so do many of my friends, and so it would be useful for me to know BSL to communicate when I or a friend goes nonverbal. This channel is a goldmine, thank you!!
I have wanted to learn BSL ever since I was a little kid but never really found a place to learn and even though the internet has been around for a while now it never occurred to me youtube might have had some videos. Now having been told that my ear condition means I will eventually become deaf one day I finally thought to search for teaching videos as in person courses cost a bucket load as do some learn online courses. Thank you so much for making these.
When I became interested in sign language many years ago, the classes then were based on SSE (Sign Supported English), following English language syntax. The basic signs as shown here are still relevant - it is how they are used in the context of BSL with its own grammatical structure and means to express something, quite different to SSE. I remain fascinated since the day so long ago passing by three people who were signing to each other in the street and felt a thrill of wonderment. Robert, UK.
Hi Dan, I really appreciate your videos! My parents in law is deaf but I’m Japanese and currently living in Japan so a chance to learn BSL was very limited until I found your channel. I watched all the videos and wrote down all signs in my note! It’s only a week to go to finally see my parents in law face to face for the first time in almost 4 years so I’m really excited to use signs-- it’s a surprise that I’m learning BSL :) One thing in my mind is there are Scottish so some of sings might be different which is fun to discover! BSL is so interesting!
In year 3, our teaching assistant knew fluent BSL and would teach some to us during golden hour. I'm 23 now and I was still able to instantly recognise a few basic phrases from this video! She was amazing.
used to work in a coffee shop for a few months and there was a deaf mother and daughter who both had no hearing but could read lips, i felt stupid trying to communicate with them without knowing any BSL but she was used to it and so nice, would've been good to know at the time, but this video is the start of another new language for me to learn i guess, even if i can only remember a few phrases
Thanks for all the good videos, keep it up! I've been learning BSL in VR for a few months now. There is a large Deaf community in VRChat, and I've made a lot of friends that I want to get better at communicating with. The signs can be a bit different due to the hand gesture limitations, but your content is still really helpful.
That's the same reason I started to learn too! I can't exactly put what I've learned into practice myself because I don't have the right equipment yet, but if I can at least understand someone signing to me then its a step in the right direction.
Thank you so much for these videos, the different angles make it really clear and the little notes on the side are very helpful! I'm trying to learn BSL as a teen so I can communicate with different people in the future, and your videos are amazing.
this is very useful, i am autistic and semiverbal and speaking less has massively reduced my anxiety, but it does leave me unable to communicate quickly and it is very inconvenient to write or pull out my text-to-speech just to say short phrases. even if people don’t understand what im signing i think they can get an idea from context. this is a very good video for teaching i think.
Hello I have decided to Learn BSL because my Nephew has become a Father to a young woman who has a Son that is slightly Autistic and has never spoken he is 3 years old it broke my heart when I discovered this the fact that she is learning to Sign and a Specialist is Teaching this young child has prompted me to go right back to basics so that i Uncle Bear can also help communicate and Teach this young lad the value of being able to communicate and also play Chess being a Cognitive Exercise in itself which hopefully may help rewire his Brain thus please God Will help him to speak I can’t begin to imagine the heartache his mother must feel for her 3year old son thank you so much this UA-cam Channel will be invaluable in showing me the Basics first kind regards Martin
I've just met someone who is deaf, so this is a really big deal for me to learn and I find you videos very easy to understand. Funny cos you even look like the guy who I've met hahaha. Thank you and God bless x
Iv just subscribed ❤🙏 i deffo beleive God is leading me here 🙏 im now 50 , my beautifull auntie taught me the alphabet when i was very young , i always rememberd it and i came across quite a few deaf folk on my travels and tho i could only do the alphabet i could communate was absolutley amazing 2 b able 2 communicate in another language ❤ was truly amazing , my aunties just the best i do feel so drawn 2 sign lanuage its a god given Gift 2 b able 2 communicate with peoole who cant hear ❤ im praying i learn this amazing language 🙏 so i can help others what a gift ❤❤ God nless u all 🙏🙏
My friend has autism and bad anxiety and when she is upset or overwhelmed she only talks a little or not at all. She has taught herself sign language and I'm trying to to make it easier to communicate with her and to reassure her when she is stressed. Thank you :)
Daniel, a million thanks! I am a Brit who is working with the deaf community in Russia, and as I progress in RSL, I have found that I have begun to forget/confuse it with BSL. Your videos are really helpful in building a bridge between deaf people in Russia and the UK))
Brilliant, Not sure how many times I will need to watch this video, but I will persevere and I am sure this alone will benefit me, I am deaf for voice, Thankyou.
2:36 nice to see you 2:48 haven’t seen you in ages 3:05 I’m surprised to see you 5:46 apology /excuse me 6:17 bless you 6:26 stay safe 6:44 be careful please 7:51 slow please 8:44 quiz
I currently work in a cafe in a library and I’ve noticed over the past few months there have been a couple deaf people that have had coffee, luckily I know the *very* basics like thank you etc, but I’m trying to learn more to help them feel even more comfortable when ordering and so on. Thanks so much for the easy to follow video 😊
What a fantastic channel. I'm not deaf and I can speak, it's just that Sign is something I always wanted to learn. Personally I believe this should be taught in every primary school. Thanks, and keep up the great work, much respect👍
Thank you so much for your videos! I recently started primary teaching and am learning bits of sign language to help communicate with some of my students who are deaf. Really paying off and I can see their faces light up when they realise they can communicate with me without always needing their interpreter

Thank you so much! I'm not deaf and I do not have hearing difficulties but I've always wanted to learn BSL so I can communicate with people who do have difficulties or are deaf so if they feel different from others I can talk to them. I'm only ten but I want to make sure anybody in this world can speak verbal or with BSL so thanks alot Dan! ❤❤❤
i have wanted to learn sign language since my diagnosis of hearing issues as a kid, and autism as an adult, and whilst i wanted to try and learn in a classrom, this video made it feel so comforting to learn , thank you so much!
My sister (I call there that even though we are not related) has a hearing disability but she can speak and somewhat hear, and I understand her very well. My grandma adopted her when I was 7 and she was 9. I only learnt a few signs because we could communicate fairly enough. She married a husband from UK who cannot hear at all and now that I am a grown up I feel so horrible for never learning the sign language- I should have just asked her to teach me (it was back in 90ies). I am doing it now to show her and her family I love them. Thank you for this super nice video, it is very helpful!
A really helpful video would be one with useful words for people with nonverbal episodes! Including words and phrases such as 'Im feeling anxious' or 'im stressed' and 'non-verbal' would be extremely useful for people like me, and i can't seem to find any videos explaining any of these so it would be really appreciated!!
These videos are a wonderful thank you! I met a man who I serve at work who I’ve made friends with who is deaf and he has inspired me to learn sign language, as well as all the other customers I serve who’s faces light up when I do a few simple signs to them. I’m hoping this is the beginning of my journey to becoming fluent in BSL and I can make people who are hard of hearing feel heard and valued! ❤️
Just starting to learn now in case I need it later. This may be your latest video but these would definitely be the first things I'd learn. When heading to another country for holidays, my mum and I learn some greetings and manners in the language
Thank you for these videos, my husband and I just decided to take it up as a hobby, but I hope to start using it in my classroom eventually to help learners who struggle with just verbal instructions. In particular thank you for making them so slow and clear, every other video we've tried seems to sign at natural speed, but it's hard for newbies to catch up! Would love to see a few more videos about BSL grammar, we're not sure how to switch the order of words when making full sentences :)
Started trying to learn today on a whim and I really think I'm gonna try to carry on with it. These videos are presented perfectly for beginners and love the quiz at the end. Thank you for making these! :)
Thank you. I've always wanted to learn BSL. I have a few deaf friends, which sometimes it's difficult to have a conversation with them. Only one of my deaf friends can lip-read. I will keep watching this video to help me learn more 😊
Have devised a Dec daily task calender & today's was try something different or learn something new. This was the learn something new & shall continue with it , not just for today . Thank you .
It's such a shame that as with most BSL UA-cam videos Dan seems to have stopped producing content. No others make weekly or even monthly content anymore, maybe its not profitable to them but at least I learnt a lot of BSL before it ended. I was making such great progress too. No one else posts BSL videos anymore these days. Thank you for your past work though Dan.
This video has helped so much! My mother is practically deaf since she’s so hard of hearing and we know she’s gonna go deaf, this is such a massive help 😊
I am starting my first formal BSL course tomorrow and I am now even more excited about that than I already was! Absolutely fantastic video - thanks so much Dan!
I learned the alphabet, as a child, at Red Cross classes. I was able to, very haltingly, use it as a communication aid when nursing. In my 50's I went to college, to learn level one BSL which was great. Now, in my 60's I am about to join a "Signing Choir". This has been an important part of a life long interest in languages. I am delighted to read in the comments how useful BSL can be for those on the Autistic Spectrum too 😌👋🏼
I've been able to sign but very basic signs since I was a child, I grew up with deaf grandparents and other relatives, I wished I'd learned to sign better so I was able to sign a full conversation with them before they passed away. BSL is a wonderful language to learn.
My mum has a good friend who is completely deaf and she wants to learn so she can talk to her properly, I have also always wanted to learn sign and these videos are very helpful!!! thank you
thank you so much for this video i am trying to learn more sign to be able to communicate with some of my friends who go through large non-verbal episodes and these have been really helping thank you so much again!
Thanks Dan 😊 so chuffed I was able to guess. Love my morning video lessons with Commanding Hands. Starting my course tomorrow and makes me less anxious to have your videos to learn from.
I've been trying to learn sign language lately as I get severe mouth ulcers which make it difficult for me to speak, and I've been struggling to find somewhere to learn BSL, I'm so glad I found these videos as they are very helpful for learning as a beginner
I've wanted to learn BSL for a long time so I can be more inclusive to the deaf community and vice versa when communicating (and I've long been of the opinion that it should be taught in school). But as I've built up a small BSL vocabulary I've noticed that as an autistic person with an auditory processing disorder and a partner who is quite hard of hearing, I've found using sign language to be very helpful in spaces with background noise.
Thanks ! I just helped a random elderly gentleman of an extremely frail and deaf disposition back to his house and would like to make sure he’s ok as he signed.
This really is a shot in the dark because you've been quiet for 7 months, but it'd be really helpful if you were to return, I would love to see a video on classroom sign language, just things like "don't run/speak/look" "I can/can't see/hear" "do you have a pen?" "I don't understand" "bathroom please" "the pen finished" etc. Because those sentences can be understood in so many contexts as building blocks :)
I learned a little BSL at school, I have severe tinnitus and pulsatile tinnitus and my hearing is deteriorating. So I'm beginning to learn again. I'm determined to keep it going. Thank you for this channel
Thank you for your videos - as a BSL learner and novice, I find your actions so clear and precise. Such a pleasure to watch and I've learnt so much from you that I now feel confident enough to attempt to communicate in BSL. Thank you and keep the videos coming...also stay safe.
I am learning this so that in future I can talk to people who are deaf. I want to communicate with then even though they are different. It is nice to have unique friends.☺
Hiya - hope there are plenty more videos coming! Really, really enjoying them! My request: could we please have a series where it's just someone telling an anecdote or similar in BSL, first without subtitles, and then the clip again with subtitles, and maybe some annotations for literal translation, commentary on a grammar rule revealing itself etc., all done at a slower-than-native pace, for receptive stream practice for learners?
Thanks for the excellent videos - lockdown led me here + memories of playing football in a local Sunday league against Salisbury Deaf many years ago - great bunch and always regretted not being able to have the usual post match banter with them in Pub over a pint - still a long way off that but making a start! - cheers
Thank you soo much for this. I love how you do the sign language nice and slow for beginners and from different angles so it's easy to know which hand to use. Thank you.
Thank you, sadly my nephew will be deaf soon & he is fed up of learning sign language because no one else has to learn it. Have a demanding job so can't do night classes so thank you so much for posting these videos.
I am a able hearing, But I have always wanted to learn BSL for over 10 yrs. Sorry Not had time,, Life got in the way. Thank you to Commanding hands, Charlie Raine for my 1st Musical encounter "Frozen - Let it Go" to start me wanting to learn More musical songs!!! Incl Rebecca, Rachel ( Moana) and Charlotte (Taylor Swift "Shake it off"). I will be learning more Day by Day.. Thank you All.
Always really good, as ever! I love how clearly you show the shape of the hands, and from the side too, so that we can see exactly how the hand shape is made. Is there any chance you could do one explaining sentence structure? You have so many great vocabulary videos, but it would be fab if you could explain how the language fits together.
Hello, my partner and I have been watching your videos and thank you! They’re very easy and straight forward to follow. He is training to be a paramedic (currently a technician) and just wondered if you could provide a video in BSL that could cover basic medical questions, such as where is the pain/what hurts, body parts etc. that he could use on the job.
Hi im starting to learn sign language. To improve my skill and make it beneficial. So I'm gonna try to learn 15mins per day. Looking forward to watch more of your vids
Thank you. I am autistic and have severe anxiety, and I find it very hard to communicate verbally sometimes. This is very useful to me because a few of my friends and my physics teacher know BSL- so now if I know it and I have a non-verbal episode, I can communicate without writing everything out.
Omg I can use it when that happens to me! Great idea! xxx
Same I’m autistic and going into high school tomorrow and I really don’t want to talk so I decided to learn BSL because I know a lot of the teachers know it plus I won’t be surprised if I do into a non verble episode too . Plus it gets anoying when u write so much you get a hand cramp

I started learning because I want to communicate with everybody:) good luck to you

Lovely introduction to making sentences. Thank you
Thank you so much for your videos!

Thanks , watching from Kenya learning this for the first time
This channel is a god send. I am starting to learn BSL, and this channel is my go to tool to learn BSL. Thank you.
I just started learning BSL during lockdown and these videos are super helpful! Thank you for producing them. :)
I'm learning BSL to communicate with a friend more and this was very helpful
My boyfriends parents are deaf and your videos have really helped me communicate, I’ve also done a level 1 BSL course because of your help. Thank you!
I think these are really good, i don’t need BSL at all but i thought it would be a good thing to learn, and these are really helping
Amazing, these are so helpful and super easy to follow, very clear. Thank you so much for your amazing content/work.
I’m trying to learn for 18 month old she watches ms Rachel a lot and I noticed when I sign to her she absolutely lights up. Wish me luck pleaseeee! 🎉😂
Im now on an intro to BSL and hopefully follow on to a level 1, thanks
I agree with this and I haven't see to new update for him.
These are amazing. Thank you so much. We have a wee one that we are now incorporating as much as we can with. And this is amazing
thank you, your video very easier to understand and helpful.
Dan cheers mate your efforts are very much appreciated.
Such a great way of teaching.
Stay safe strong and happy.
This so interesting, and clearly given in your presentation. I would love to learn, as you never know when you could help someone.
I am delighted to read in the comments how useful BSL can be for those on the Autistic Spectrum too 😌👋🏼
Your videos are the best please keep them coming.
I love watching this every day, thank you for doing it
I've been able to sign but very basic signs since I was a child, I grew up with deaf grandparents and other relatives, I wished I'd learned to sign better so I was able to sign a full conversation with them before they passed away. BSL is a wonderful language to learn.
My mum has a good friend who is completely deaf and she wants to learn so she can talk to her properly, I have also always wanted to learn sign and these videos are very helpful!!! thank you
This is brilliant, thank you for sharing.
Keep up the AMAZING 😉 work 😊and don’t stop !!!!!!!!!!!
thank you so much for this video i am trying to learn more sign to be able to communicate with some of my friends who go through large non-verbal episodes and these have been really helping thank you so much again!
This is such a useful video. Thank you very much
Excellent Dan thank you. I. Watch your videos over and over to re-enforce learning. Always looking for new ones.
Your videos are really helpful!! I'm trying to learn sign language for my best friend. Thank you!!
Thank you, I wish BSL was taught in school as a basic part of the curriculum. Hopefully one day that becomes the case.
Thank you so much indeed, your job is perfect 👌
Thanks !
I just helped a random elderly gentleman of an extremely frail and deaf disposition back to his house and would like to make sure he’s ok as he signed.
I really should have started looking into sign language sooner, this is a huge help!!
I’m slowly loosing my hearing and I’m learning so much from your content. Thank you for hearing all your videos.
Im going to work in a school for children with additional needs. The manners, apology and the need help are very good to know
Thank you very helpful, refreshing for what I'd learnt BSL level 1, because I never practice it for 3yrs I forgot some of it.
Thank you very much, I am currently luarning BSL right now. 😊
- cheers
Great video, love how you do them with the side view too 🙌
Thank you soo much for this. I love how you do the sign language nice and slow for beginners and from different angles so it's easy to know which hand to use. Thank you.
Brilliant, I agree.
I lost my hearing suddenly last year and your videos have been so helpful
Thank you, sadly my nephew will be deaf soon & he is fed up of learning sign language because no one else has to learn it. Have a demanding job so can't do night classes so thank you so much for posting these videos.
found this extremly helpful as as a refresher, im only level 2 but very much out of practice. Really loved the quiz, so thank you
I am a able hearing, But I have always wanted to learn BSL for over 10 yrs.
He is training to be a paramedic (currently a technician) and just wondered if you could provide a video in BSL that could cover basic medical questions, such as where is the pain/what hurts, body parts etc. that he could use on the job.
does this one help? ua-cam.com/video/07KG48ADhO8/v-deo.html
That would help in my future job carrer choices if i decide to work as a paramedic or a doctor or something like that so i love the idea of that
Hi im starting to learn sign language. To improve my skill and make it beneficial. So I'm gonna try to learn 15mins per day. Looking forward to watch more of your vids
Just started, beautiful language 😍
