- Help communication with your Deaf customers who use British Sign Language by learning some basic signs and short sentences.
Remembering just a few signs can make all the difference, especially if you're wearing a face mask.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you mate, I have a deaf lady who comes to my shop daily. With Covid on, I can not imagine how difficult it must be for people like her. I think I will make her day thanks to your video
That's so wonderful!
We need an update on this!! How's it going buddy?
Honestly I am hard of hearing and masks make it harder to "hear" in crowded situations as I lip read a little lol
Thank you i work in a charity shop and have a few regular deaf and hard of hearing customers, this vid helps so much!
Same
Again, it's communications with & to others, Mark thankyou
Im planing to start my own business so want to learn british sign language to make a better experience for any deff and hearing impaired customers I may have.
this is amazing, thank you. i'm trying to learn but wanted to know the basics of customer service for when i'm at work whilst i learn the rest. Going to send this to the managers and get everyone to learn the basics! Thank you again, so helpful!❤

Not only that you create such great and useful videos for learning BSL, but just to top it up you are also so handsome and that just makes the learning so much more fun and easier, Dan ;)
Regional signs would be nice. We use a flat palm and hold out for wait
hey just want to say thanks for doing what you do, im trying to learn BSL as im hard of hearing and due to complications in my ears and due to have operations to try and fix it but every so often my hearing goes to a point where i cant hear people stood in front of me and its made me realise how difficult it must be for people with no hearing to communicate. what is the easiest way to learn apart from your videos because i am remembering some thing but not all and its hard to make up full sentences and conversations tia
I am learning BSL to try and assist in getting a job working in a school. There are lots of resources on the internet but I find your videos the most informative and easy to follow. I would like to have a formal certificate or qualification that I can show to confirm I have learnt BSL (at least to level 1 or 2). Can you do a course that will give me the accredited qualification I need (I am willing to pay for the course if required)
Question: I’ve got a bit of a disorder in one my right pinkie finger, which makes it difficult raise or lower it properly, which makes signing numbers a bit awkward on it as my dominant hand. My 3s and 4s look very similar as a result. Would there be any issue if I had to switch hands occasionally for signing certain things, or should I try and use my left hand as my dominant hand? Thanks! Your videos are really helping me!
Also, how do you sign “would you like a receipt?”?
Hello:) love your videos theyre really helping me learn BSL
Have you got a video explaining the difference between simular signs? As in the signs that the action is very close to another word, so we can specifically see the difference between the signs? If not would that be something you'd be doing in future?
Hello, I've been watching your videos the past week to try and learn some basic sign language to help with my job (pharmacy) out of curiosity the signs for "health" and "how are you" appear to be the same if not very similar. Is it the lip pattern that tells them apart? Or am I wrong? Sorry I don't mean to cause any offence. Just want to make sure I am signing correctly. Thank you :)
Thanks a lot for doing these videos!!! Though i was hoping if you can do a video for pronouns and modal verbs.
I like the background music xD
The same shock orly cough because robert commercially shave with a pointless oboe. wild, obsequious community
Thank you so much!! I feel so bad when I struggle to communicate with somebody but I’ve found it so hard to find BSL resources, only ASL, ultimately leaving me getting the two mixed up now 😣 This is so helpful though! ✨

Wonderful! Thanks so much.
Thank you this is a massive help
This is one of those times I'm so thankful for youtube's existence. I've always wanted to learn sign language because it's kind of ridiculous we aren't taught it in school. Thanks for uploading these videos which are easy to follow! :)
Totally agree with you there!
These videos are so useful, one of the best resources I have found for learning BSL, simple and easy to follow.....thank you so much 👐
They are useful
I work at mcdonalds. Had two deaf men come in today and i felt bad that we struggled to communicate easily. Im here because i want to be able to give future deaf people an easy time
Mcdonalds CEL here for the same reason!
Hi, I work in a pub, I hope you take requests!!, some really nice stuff to know would be things like “single or double?” (shots, for example in a vodka lemonade), “social distancing”, “ice and garnish?” (lime/lemon slice), “anything else?”, “regular or large?”, “do you need/want a straw/glass?”, “we have ran out”, “what’s your table number?” and so on xx
Yes, it is helpful to use sign in a busy and loud place
alan brett Especially with the perspex screens...
@@einin8752, I worked in pubs and nightclubs, so I know how the job is hard, but with perspex screen as well as pain in the backside customers the job must be a nightmare Take care and stay safe and well
alan brett a lot of people need reminding to stand behind the screens, a lot of people see them as just obstacles and tend to navigate around them :(
@@einin8752, Thanks for reply, I agree with you 100%. People don't understand they protect you and them. I hope my first reply did not come across wrong. Sorry if it did
I had a customer come in yesterday and he used the self checkouts but had an issue which I needed to move him over onto my till for. I left that interaction really upset that I couldn’t communicate with him properly. I’ve spent an hour watching your videos and I could confidently have a conversation with him now, I can’t wait until he comes back in!
Thank you so much!
This is so useful, thank you. A lady came into the cafe I work at last week and her order was taken wrong because it’s especially difficult at the moment with masks on. I just wanted to at least apologise to her but I had no idea how. I felt so awful but I hope she will come back again so I can at least welcome her politely and ask her if she wants sugar 😌
I've had a similar experience in customer service. I think once that happens you realise how difficult it is to communicate if the person you're talking to doesn't know BSL. Although we feel awful when thinking about it, at least we know the importance of learning BSL and preparing for next time :)
In case anyone else is wondering, sorry in BSL is a closed fist rubbed in circles on your chest (I think it's the same in ASL as well).
Your videos are great! I recently started a new job at a veterinary surgery and we have a couple of deaf clients who visit us. Although my BSL vocabulary is very limited, I managed to communicate with the lady who came in the other day, which I’m sure she appreciated as she has been a client here for years and no one seems to have made an effort to communicate with her till this point. I look forward to her coming in again and becoming more confident with sign language and conversing with her. Thanks for your videos Dan!
Hi, im a student paramedic and I really want to learn sign for my patients, I have been going over your other amazing videos and was wondering if you would be able to do a video on basic medical questioning for me please.
Example "where's the pain"
"What kind of pain, sharp/stabbing"
Ect.
Thank you 😊 💓
Maybe a video covering most of a history taking?
Yeah maybe
Hiiiiiiiii
That is a great idea.
This really helped me a few months back, I'd only seen the video maybe a couple of weeks earlier, and a guy who was completely deaf came in. I managed to sign to him and the look or happiness on his face that I could actually communicate to him in his own language is one I will never forget
Dan is an excellent teacher! Love the way he shows the signs again to the side for clarity. Brilliant!
I started learning BSL around 3 weeks ago. I have learnt so much from your videos. I work in subway and occasionally get deaf people come into the store. It is hard to understand what they are asking for sometimes however with the help of your videos it’s becoming more clear and easy to work with them. I can see by their reaction they are appreciative when I have used BSL, and I always let them know I only know a small amount. Thanks so much for the help :)
Really find these videos so helpful. Please set up Patreon as i'd love to contribute as i'm sure many would!!
This is great! I'm planning to become a therapist when im older so im learning sign language now just incase i might need it someday. I only started today and I've already learned how to say my name and some simple words for how i feel so its a good start lol. Thankyou for the tutorials!
I have autism and went to a school in 98/99 that used a lot of BSL. I learnt some whilst I was there but not used any when I was sent to a different school that was more for my level of learning, but watching this has made me realise how much I still remember, even though it's been 20 years!. Subbed as I have been wanting to learn again.
In my time working in retail we have 2 regulars that are deaf, I always feel awful that I can’t communicate with them. This video is so helpful and I will definitely be learning BSL so they can communicate anything they might need! Thank you!
I've learned how to ask if someone would like a drink in BSL... but most importantly... I have remembered how to do it!
hiya! so i work at mcdonalds, and i took out an order to a mobile order. and i always check the persons order to make sure it lines up with the receipt right. and i go to ask, and the customer was deaf. so, i know very basic signs right, but in a panic i mange to ask to see her phone and check the order. but i felt so guilty for not being able to properly communicate so,,, i am trying very hard to learn these signs. would you be able to tell me how to sign "what did you order?" and "who placed the order?" the bsl equivalent. i cant find it anywhere, and it would be so helpful.
this video is so good, thankyou so much or creating and sharing it. keep going
Thank you for your videos, I am a bit slow but am learning, but I will keep watching till the penny drops
Thanks Dan. I have a Deaf lady who has recently begun visiting my store quite regularly and this will help me to communicate with her a little better. A geat resource.
Im partially deaf and I just think this is awesome to learn so I can communicate with people who cannot hear! I've been trying to learn for a while now I am glad I found this
I'm so glad that I found this! I've always wanted to learn sign language, thank you! 💗
Hello Dan - I learnt to finger spell 60 years ago. In those days the letter W was inverted, and Z was similar to the sign for BISCUIT, unless I had a bad teacher. My question is about C and D. I am right-handed and have always made the C shape with my left hand and added my right index finger to make D, but it seems that I should be using my right hand for C and adding my left index finger for D. Does it matter? BTW - keep up the good work; love your tutorials especially the tempo and varying views.
Thank you for posting this! I requested it on Instagram as well but I only saw it now
I had a Christmas job this year geared towards kids, and I felt awful that I couldn't talk to the hard of hearing/non-verbals. I want to learn BSL this year, and your videos are such a big help (the side view is SO helpful).
I work in a pub with many deaf customers and with covid I try to accommodate for them by removing my mask so they can read my lips or writing things down but I want to learn some BSL so I can actually take their orders without so much hassle, thanks for the video!
Saved to go back and watch again!! I work in a pub and always am the one to take orders from our deaf customers as I'm the only member of staff who knows a little bit of sign (nothing great! Just basics like hello, thank you, please, etc). Will be sending this video to the rest of my staff to give us all a brush up! Brilliant, clear video, thank you.
This has been extremely helpful for me. I have met a few deaf/hoh people in my bistro and they light up whenever they realise I can help them out in BSL. It also helps me as I am losing my hearing too so I need to learn more and more. I will be watching many more of your videos
This is great, I’m just learning BSL and was struggling to understand how to form a sentence so was unknowingly using SSE. When you said that it’s about a subject then a comment or action it fell in to place and made so much sense.
Love watching your videos they are so helpful and have taught me so much already. Keep them coming please.

learned the 100 words video in an hour and this one in 20 mins, really good videos
Thank you so much! I work in retail, and I did have one experience of a deaf customer coming in. I tried my best to communicate, even though I didn’t know sign language. I’ll keep watching this and practise in case another deaf person comes in, which I hope someone will.
I know this is a pretty old video but if anyone can give a comment I would appreciate it. The "what are you looking for" gesture, when your using your finger wouldn't it be confused with no?
My 2 year old has autism and is non verbal, I want to try teach myself and him some basic sign language like, come here, what do you want/need.
So with this gesture, how do I not confuse him with the gesture for no?
Definitely gonna use this with the regulars at the pub I work at, tysm!
Thank you very much, I recently started a new job and there’s a frequent customer who signs, this is very helpful
These videos are very cool. I recently started working with a deaf gent and most find it difficult to communicate with him and don't even bother. Only a few of us try to include him by learning to communicate. I've found sign language very interesting as I find a lot of it very literal by design and it fascinates me. My friend teaches me what he can but these videos are endlessly helpful in taking the weight off of him having to try and explain everything to me. Wonderful job Dan.
This is great
It is great to learn, but a bit hard for me at this present time
alan brett why?
@@okay3256 I am a bit slow on the uptake, it takes a while for my brain to warm up. Thanks for taking the time to reply.
@@sharonannbrett257 It takes time to build up, be patient to yourself.
Hello! Should you speak/mouth how phrase as it’s being signed or how you would say it?
Thankyou for this video! I used this video to help me with my customer service in retail and the NHS. I felt more content knowing that those who use BSL had more options for conversing with me if they wanted/needed to and that way I could be more supportive.
Thank you, Dan!
I have had a few occasions when I was trying to speak to someone, not knowing that they were deaf. I wish I'd watched this video first...
Your videos have been a god send...
Really helpful video. Yes and no made me giggle because i remember my deaf bsl teacher blaming "mr tumble" on cbbc for people using their hands to sign them xD
I work in Levis and this video is a great starting point! Are any of your videos specific for fashion workers?
We have a really sweet deaf guy that comes to my resturaunt. He usually comes with family but sometimes on his own. He points to what he wants and he usually understands me because I had a deaf nan and can annunciate, but I would like to have a real conversation with him.
I’d like to know how to sign ‘customer’!
also client.
Love t he signs today. I learned so many useful ones. I hope you make more as I found your video very clear. Thank you. X
Hi thank you for your videos there great . I am try to learn for some of my students. Could you do a One on Swimming Please!
very useful thank you, especially the order of sentences. Keep up the good work.
Can 'what do you want' be used as 'what would you like'? I feel what do you want is a bit direct and stern but is it the facial movements that determined how serious it sounds?
Question, is it ok if I accidently switch to my left hand occasionally instead of right when doing sign language?

i work in customer service and watching your videos is really gonna help me communicate better with my customers who use bsl as recently i have found a few more customers who use it who come into my store
How can i say as “no problem” or “my pleasure” in response to thank you?
Dan's videos are clear, useful and at right pace, would you consider making a video for name of occupations?
I'd like to know how to sign "quantitative analysis", "broker" and "marketing researcher".
can British sign be used in Ireland
but this is so helpful thank you!

Great videos thankyou. How do you sign "very much"? Sometime want to say thankyou you very much. I know thankyou. Also...... how to sign "please"
Cheers
Is there another way to say please?
so who is against sign language none of the videos for training are opening, the ads open and play
I had a deaf man come into the place I work today and I felt bad I couldnt communicate
Thank you for this well formed video. I work in the retail sector and I will endeavour to try and use Bsl into practice when needed.
I think this is one of your best videos yet! I'm learning BSL as I'm slowly going deaf. It explains really well what hands to use for what and the sentance structures. It's one of the first videos I'll be showing my family (as I'd like to learn BSL too!).
This video should be shown & practiced by everyone who works with the public 💪 thank you
Really helpful, thanks!
Thank you so much for the video
I served a deaf customer today and I managed fairly well despite my lack of BSL knowledge, I was able to infer a lot of her requests through context, and I was at least able to thank her and say goodbye at the end. She used the notes app on her phone when she needed to so she was able to get what she needed. That was yesterday. I'm so glad this video exists so I can make the same transaction easier for other deaf customers I might meet some day. I hope I see her again, she was really nice :)
Great video. Thanks
I had a question about this. I know a lot of deaf people also read lips and so people mouth the words they're signing too. Would it be better to mouth the translation or the literal BSL word order? For example "What are you looking for?" or "Looking what?" Hope that makes sense and tysm for such a helpful video!
Learning sign language is so fun. I never thought that I'd find it this fun.
Yes, indeed.
I am learning SSE / BSL by myself and these videos are really helpful 🥳, thank you
Wow! Love all the details about the eyebrows being a question, the direction of the movements, and all the detailed info that makes a difference. Thank you so much! ❤
all video handy teacher
These are really helpful! I have a regular customer who comes through the drive thru at work who uses BSL and i knew very basic signs to help out and ive been looking for a video that can help me learn some specific phrases so im prepared for when he comes in and to make his visits easier.
Quick question: is the sign for UA-cam the same as the sign for exit? They looked similar at the end
I like it how you show the sign from side way too. The is really helpful. Thank you so much! What great videos you made!🙂
Thank you so. I work on in customer service and I feel so useless not being able to sign to our deaf customers. I've been trying to pick a few things up for a while and your videos are the most helpful I've found.
Thank you so much! I feel awful when I serve customers and cannot communicate well with them, especially when wearing a mask! I'm going to memorise this for the next time I cannot wait
This is amazing
All I know is to say thank you
Know I will be able to communicate more 🤗 thank you thank you thank you
Question: would you say that you know sse or BSL if u do it in Order of sse also is signing every word called something different?
Thank you! I have a few deaf or non-verbal people come into my store
I've been learning more and more and they always smile when I show them I'm learning more ☺️
Your videos have been a great help for me 🥰
This is very off topic Dan is very hot. Also this is a great and helpful video, thank you, bye
Glad I found this channel. Its been so helpful with understanding signs a bit better especially with the different view of the hand signs. Thank you so much!
Hi I just wanted to say thank you for the video, this is one of the only resources ive found that takes their time over the words and lets us see from different view points. Thanks again :)
