I see a lot of behavioural management stuff online that I know I just won't have my heart in if I adopted those methods. It is great to see something more my style work so well!
I love that you have high expectations for your kindergarteners. I too have high expectations for my first grade students. If we don't have high expectations for our students we will never know their real potential.
I am finishing up a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and have accepted an internship for next year in lieu of student teaching. Your view of behavior management is refreshing in a world of punishment and reward. Your philosophy speaks to my soul and I feel so validated as I have cringed at the various "clipping up" and "hole punches" that I witnessed in the classrooms where I have trained. This video was so helpful. I teach Prekindergarten and have been for over 10 years but this last year was rough and I have had some behavioral issues. I found myself just telling them what to do all the time and frustrated that they weren't responding well. I was using treasure box rewards as a way to to encourage them to behave. This video just gives me a little reminder if why I teach and how I want them to be problem solvers and thinkers. Not just coming to class wanting treasure box. Thank you !

Thank you for putting this video together. I try to stay consistent with answering students who raise their hands, so I was not sure what to do besides praising the ones who did, and reminding/ redirecting the students who did not, without blaming. Just stating that we want to raise our hands. I will implement the comment “it’s not fair when you just shout out the answer, since that takes away from others, the time to think, so I want you to think about it, and let me know when you are ready to participate.” It’s very cool how you do not make a big deal about mistakes. It’s true, I make mistakes too, and try to own up to it to adults and students when I catch it, or when someone lets me know, and it was my slip up. I will implement the problem solving wheel too, and let them know I got it from your channel :)

I appreciate your channel so much. I start my first year teaching first grade August 1st, and I feel overwhelmed, under prepared, and NERVOUS! I felt like student teaching prepared me but I never saw any procedures at the beginning of the year , or learned how to implement classroom management. I love what you said about setting high expectations instead of making excuses. I get so many excuses from a senior teacher about the behavior of students.
I like this approach....it is how a respectful parent treats their children...so why not in the classroom? It's love and logic....it's relationship focused rather than punishment focused. I love how it focuses on moving on and so they can start to feel a sense of success, rather than punishment focused which increases anxiety or the child feeling they can never measure up and then they just give up and act out more.
+Cecilia Chalen-Rodriguez I do to. It makes it so much more authentic and they feel like they are part of the classroom and it really belongs to them. Which it should. School is no longer teacher-focused. Now we want to strive to be student-focused.
I'm majoring in early childhood education, and recently found your videos. They're so inspiring!! They make me want to keep working. My mom is a teacher, too, and she's told me horror stories about problem students. Even if you set those high expectations, do you ever have children that aren't respectful or feel like they don't have to listen to you? How would you handle a child who consistently behaves like that?

Hi :) I'm a pre-school teacher from Australia. I tried one of your strategies today in my class. We were pretending to be dinosaurs to music when four children went down on floor on their backs. I stopped the music at the end of the song and asked my class what could happen. They said the children could get hurt. One of the children, who was one floor, said a child stood on his finger. I explained that the other child was expecting you to be on floor. I then asked the children how we should dance next time and they said standing up. I'll be interested to see how they go next week. I am currently at my final year of University and during my work experience i was surrounded around teachers who only relied on sanctions such as rewards which i didn't agree with as it did not stimulate their learning. deliver the children a classroom on bullying. Involve the children in a lesson that gives them the insight of what bullying is and how, what they did could be an aspect of behaviour. This could be implemented by looking at the activity the 'crumpled paper' for bullying.

Don't be nervous. Remember that you want your students to respect you. That is the most important thing. You can be caring and loving while still standing your ground and being an authority figure.

This is great! I never thought I would find a teaching UA-cam channel that I could learn strategies from. Such a brilliant idea. I've also been keeping a teaching journal to take notes along the way of my student teaching journey and to remind myself of some notes /strategies/reflections, and I love it! I've spoken to some friends who finished their student teaching and wished they kept a journal, so I'm beginning that now and writing ideas from your videos in it. just figured I'd share with anyone who hasn't thought of this :) great video !
I have my degree in early childhood and will be interviewing soon for a position at a school. I was told as a student teacher that I have weak classroom management. I was told by my cooperating teacher to follow her rules and how she does things. That wasn't working for me, and I try other things that just didn't work either. Thank you Bridget so much for your advice on behavior management! I am in my 3rd week of my credential program working in a Transitional Kindergarten classroom and majority of those students are ELL. Some of the little ones have a difficult time with basic behavioral expectations that my master teacher would have them do. I wonder if having visual cues or more specific instruction would benefit them. I'll try using your tips and see how far they go!

Great Video! Forgive me for chiming in, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you heard about - Trentvorty Kids Science Theorem (should be on google have a look)? It is a great one of a kind guide for becoming an excellent parent minus the headache. Ive heard some great things about it and my friend Sam at very last got amazing results with it.

I suspect that the analogy is the reason why there are behaviour management issues. I see the classroom like a team and you get stronger and better over time and therefore more excited to come to the game particularly if you know you'll win. If you inspire, engage and excite your students consistently get to know them then over time there will be less and less issues and students may be excited to come and learn with you. At the end of the year I am normally having the best lessons of the year, we are functioning like a team not getting more dysfunctional.

I do have a blog! www.TheLetteredClassroom.com - I think you might find a lot of my past videos to be beneficial as well :) My treasure chest typically has random items inside. I usually ask for parents to send in items and I always get kids meal toys or party items that come in bulk. I will even buy some items from the Dollar Tree every once in a while. My coupons vary. the lengths some kids will go to get out of doing simple tasks has kind of locked up my brain a few times as a new teacher. I had a kid pretend to cry the other day because he saw I was new, he even put water on his eyes and everything. The veteran teacher i was shadowing saw right through it and after she told him to straighten up he was right back to giggling and doing the task. same with the whole bathroom truth issue.

This video was informative!!! I use the daily 5 and the anchor charts. They have saved me in the beginning of the year. Now that it is getting closer to the end, I always wondered how to deal with tattling and random student behaviors. I love how you redirect it to the student by giving them that think time and allowing them to come back. It has changed my approach because so often I raise my voice but I'm truly not angry at them at all. Sometimes I feel the need to because I want my other students to know I don't allow that specific behavior. Your method will allow me to be calm but firm. Also, I like your idea about how to communicate with parents on behavior with the smiley faces. I currently teach little ones, but next year will be teaching 3rd grade. Do you have any tips or suggestions on how I can communicate their daily behavior to their parents in a more age appropriate way? Your videos are awesome!
+amanda campbell 3rd grade! I did my student teaching there. Really, I most likely wouldn't communicate in that way with parents. We send home something called green folders on a weekly basis and my son has his behavior report there. It's nice because I can see where or not his teacher had to take away his bookworm 'bucks' for behavior. Unless you are having serious issues I would stick to weekly. It's ta that age that they should really start behaving more. I have a video coming on Monday that will give some examples of students behavior slips that I send home if they are having daily issues in class. I hope that helps.
Thanks for sharing your expertise with us :) You are so friendly! I am a kindergarten teacher and I am looking for ideas on how to deal with kids who interrupt during circle time. I have a couple of kids who either talk or pock their friends no matter what we do to redirect their attention. Before carpet time, we review the expected behavior, but they still do it. We even told them that if they chose to play when they are not supposed to, they are taking time from their recess away. We talk to them very often, explaining as you said...but these kids are difficult....What do you suggest? Thanks in advance and to any educator who would like to share their strategies.

I love the idea about taking the markers away or having the child go back to their seat! But have you had kiddos in the past who just sit and don't go get their markers & end up not doing their work or just stay seated at their desk the rest of instruction time?
Yes and I send all the work home with a note. I expect it to be completed and of not they sit in the office or with another teacher and miss out on activities.

I love this video, part one and two! They are really helpful. I do have a question, in one of the videos you brought up a scenario where you said if there was a child rolling around and being disruptive, you would ask them to go sit in their seat and let you know when they are ready to behave. And I feel like that would work most the time, but what would you do in a situation where the child told you no, and just wouldn't mind you when you asked them to do something, even if you were calm about it?
This is a great question and it starts at the beginning of the year! By building this relationship early on students will respond to your requests more effectively; I cannot stress that enough, they are not just words! Relationship building is a process that you should start as soon as possible. I had the opportunity this year to meet my incoming students at the end of last year and as part of that 'meet and greet' I asked each of the students to write me a letter over summer vacation. Their responses will tell me a lot about the student and their thinking. I will continue steps like this the moment they come through my door. I want to learn how each student ticks! Now to your point...If the child does not respond then I let them know that I will need to take other measures. For example: Call the parents and have them speak with the child (this would be a time when I get the class busy on a different task while I deal with the situation) or contact your administration. But typically I will not contact administration unless that child is harming themselves or another student. Calling parents nearly always does the trick. For Thursday, I am working on a "Top 10 Tips for the new year" video. I think that this will be a good question to address! Thanks!
I have mixed feelings about not having classroom rules. I like what she said about handling situations as they arise, however, classroom rules are mandatory in our school and is a good visual for students who need that reminder daily.
Hello!! Let me start off by saying I absolutely love love LOVE your videos! You have so many great ideas! For the behavior calendar, at what point in the day do you fill those out? What do you have the students doing while you stamp them? I love that idea but I am trying to decide at which point toward the end of the day I could take time to stamp them all!
I might do a new behavior video soon. I'm thinking about covering K+4th with a bit of comparison on what worked from me. A lot is the same...but a lot is different!
How would you send out the monthly behaviour chart on a daily basis and involve the parents? Parents from less affluent households often don't have the internet, nor do they have the time or space to sign something off on a regular basis. How do you go about emphasising how important the daily behaviour chart is with such parents and how would you give them access to it?
I'm an art ed major and heading into student teaching this fall, would this work in a classroom that has different sets of classes coming and going from your room? such as the art room or music room? what suggestions in do you have for rules and procedures for this type of lass setting. thank you for your videos.:)
I really appreciate the comments that you gave. The fact is that women can say things that men can/cannot say. I don't want to come down as a heavy disciplinarian but the kids know that there is a difference. it's OK for "mom" to correct me but when "dad" does it, it's really scary. I love my students. How can I do that realizing that this is a male teacher who wants cooperation? Any advice?

I love this backwards way of creating routines. I usually just let them know what the routines are. Love this!

Hi :) I'm a pre-school teacher from Australia. I tried one of your strategies today in my class. We were pretending to be dinosaurs to music when four children went down on floor on their backs. I stopped the music at the end of the song and asked my class what could happen. They said the children could get hurt. One of the children, who was one floor, said a child stood on his finger. I explained that the other child was expecting you to be on floor. I then asked the children how we should dance next time and they said standing up. I'll be interested to see how they go next week. Thank you for your advice on classroom strategies. I am currently at my final year of University and during my work experience i was surrounded around teachers who only relied on sanctions such as rewards which i didn't agree with as it did not stimulate their learning. Don't be nervous. Remember that you want your students to respect you. That is the most important thing. You can be caring and loving while still standing your ground and being an authority figure.

This is great! I never thought I would find a teaching UA-cam channel that I could learn strategies from. Such a brilliant idea. I've also been keeping a teaching journal to take notes along the way of my student teaching journey and to remind myself of some notes /strategies/reflections, and I love it! I've spoken to some friends who finished their student teaching and wished they kept a journal, so I'm beginning that now and writing ideas from your videos in it. just figured I'd share with anyone who hasn't thought of this :) great video !

I have my degree in early childhood and will be interviewing soon for a position at a school. I was told as a student teacher that I have weak classroom management. I was told by my cooperating teacher to follow her rules and how she does things. That wasn't working for me, and I try other things that just didn't work either. I am in my 3rd week of my credential program working in a Transitional Kindergarten classroom and majority of those students are ELL. Some of the little ones have a difficult time with basic behavioral expectations that my master teacher would have them do. I wonder if having visual cues or more specific instruction would benefit them. I'll try using your tips and see how far they go!

It is a great one of a kind guide for becoming an excellent parent minus the headache. Ive heard some great things about it and my friend Sam at very last got amazing results with it.

I suspect that the analogy is the reason why there are behaviour management issues. I see the classroom like a team and you get stronger and better over time and therefore more excited to come to the game particularly if you know you'll win. If you inspire, engage and excite your students consistently get to know them then over time there will be less and less issues and students may be excited to come and learn with you. At the end of the year I am normally having the best lessons of the year, we are functioning like a team not getting more dysfunctional.

As far as awarding behavior goes, what is in your treasure chest, and what are the coupons used for?
I do have a blog! www.TheLetteredClassroom.com - I think you might find a lot of my past videos to be beneficial as well :) My treasure chest typically has random items inside. I usually ask for parents to send in items and I always get kids meal toys or party items that come in bulk. I will even buy some items from the Dollar Tree every once in a while. My coupons vary. I have teacher chair, stinky socks, furry friend, pillow day, hat day, gum, fancy pen, ipad for the day and so on. Good luck! Stay tuned for more videos! :)

the lengths some kids will go to get out of doing simple tasks has kind of locked up my brain a few times as a new teacher. I had a kid pretend to cry the other day because he saw I was new, he even put water on his eyes and everything. The veteran teacher i was shadowing saw right through it and after she told him to straighten up he was right back to giggling and doing the task. same with the whole bathroom truth issue.

This video was informative!!! I use the daily 5 and the anchor charts. They have saved me in the beginning of the year. Now that it is getting closer to the end, I always wondered how to deal with tattling and random student behaviors. I love how you redirect it to the student by giving them that think time and allowing them to come back. It has changed my approach because so often I raise my voice but I'm truly not angry at them at all. Sometimes I feel the need to because I want my other students to know I don't allow that specific behavior. Your method will allow me to be calm but firm.
Also, I like your idea about how to communicate with parents on behavior with the smiley faces. I currently teach little ones, but next year will be teaching 3rd grade. Do you have any tips or suggestions on how I can communicate their daily behavior to their parents in a more age appropriate way? Your videos are awesome!
+amanda campbell 3rd grade! I did my student teaching there. Really, I most likely wouldn't communicate in that way with parents. We send home something called green folders on a weekly basis and my son has his behavior report there. It's nice because I can see where or not his teacher had to take away his bookworm 'bucks' for behavior. Unless you are having serious issues I would stick to weekly. It's ta that age that they should really start behaving more. I have a video coming on Monday that will give some examples of students behavior slips that I send home if they are having daily issues in class. I hope that helps.

Thanks for sharing your expertise with us :) You are so friendly! I am a kindergarten teacher and I am looking for ideas on how to deal with kids who interrupt during circle time. I have a couple of kids who either talk or pock their friends no matter what we do to redirect their attention. Before carpet time, we review the expected behavior, but they still do it. We even told them that if they chose to play when they are not supposed to, they are taking time from their recess away. We talk to them very often, explaining as you said...but these kids are difficult....What do you suggest? Thanks in advance and to any educator who would like to share their strategies.

I love the idea about taking the markers away or having the child go back to their seat! But have you had kiddos in the past who just sit and don't go get their markers & end up not doing their work or just stay seated at their desk the rest of instruction time?
Yes and I send all the work home with a note. I expect it to be completed and of not they sit in the office or with another teacher and miss out on activities.

I love this video, part one and two! They are really helpful. I do have a question, in one of the videos you brought up a scenario where you said if there was a child rolling around and being disruptive, you would ask them to go sit in their seat and let you know when they are ready to behave. And I feel like that would work most the time, but what would you do in a situation where the child told you no, and just wouldn't mind you when you asked them to do something, even if you were calm about it?
This is a great question and it starts at the beginning of the year! By building this relationship early on students will respond to your requests more effectively; I cannot stress that enough, they are not just words! Relationship building is a process that you should start as soon as possible. I had the opportunity this year to meet my incoming students at the end of last year and as part of that 'meet and greet' I asked each of the students to write me a letter over summer vacation. Their responses will tell me a lot about the student and their thinking. I will continue steps like this the moment they come through my door. I want to learn how each student ticks!
Now to your point...If the child does not respond then I let them know that I will need to take other measures. For example: Call the parents and have them speak with the child (this would be a time when I get the class busy on a different task while I deal with the situation) or contact your administration. But typically I will not contact administration unless that child is harming themselves or another student. Calling parents nearly always does the trick.

I have mixed feelings about not having classroom rules. I like what she said about handling situations as they arise, however, classroom rules are mandatory in our school and is a good visual for students who need that reminder daily.

Hello!! Let me start off by saying I absolutely love love LOVE your videos! You have so many great ideas! For the behavior calendar, at what point in the day do you fill those out? What do you have the students doing while you stamp them? I love that idea but I am trying to decide at which point toward the end of the day I could take time to stamp them all!
I might do a new behavior video soon. I'm thinking about covering K+4th with a bit of comparison on what worked from me. A lot is the same...but a lot is different!

Parents from less affluent households often don't have the internet, nor do they have the time or space to sign something off on a regular basis.
How do you go about emphasising how important the daily behaviour chart is with such parents and how would you give them access to it?

I really appreciate the comments that you gave. The fact is that women can say things that men can/cannot say. I don't want to come down as a heavy disciplinarian but the kids know that there is a difference. it's OK for "mom" to correct me but when "dad" does it, it's really scary. I love my students. How can I do that realizing that this is a male teacher who wants cooperation? Any advice?
