- Following the success of DAHMER, MONSTERS: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is the newest addition to Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s “Monster” anthology series, chronicling the case of the real-life brothers convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez. While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed - and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole - that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. The show also stars Cooper Koch (Erik Menendez), Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Lyle Menendez), Nathan Lane (Dominick Dunne), Ari Graynor (Leslie Abramson).

MONSTERS: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story | Official Trailer #1 | Netflix
/ @netflix
This riveting true-crime drama probes the lives of the Menendez brothers, convicted of the brutal 1989 murders of their parents in Beverly Hills.
Lyle's prosecutor, Pam Bozanich, argued that "men could not be raped, because they lack the necessary equipment to be raped." I read about this case, and I couldn't believe that was actually said.
Casey Anthony's lawyer borrowed heavily from this defense.
Unfortunately many women have this opinion, which is surprising considering how many women are victims themselves to that crime
@@AmateurHistory645 men get raped.all the time in prison
She has to know that,
so @n@l isn’t a thing? ..
A lawyer is entitled to their opinions. You are PRETENDING like a prosecutor in her very late 40s early 50s back in 1989 magically had a time machine to know what society thinks 40 years later. Her opinion was derived from CA laws and biology at the time. Men do NOT and still do NOT have a box! LAWS back then required a box to be P in order for it to be labeled R instead of SA. A box is biologically designed to receive P. A man can only use something that is NOT biologically designed to receive P so if that man testified that he only said no once like Erik testified to then of course an argument could be made that he consented all the times except that once as an adult AND that Erik consented to bottom for Craig, Kearney, and other men in the jail that were listed on his jail activity report while he awaited trial 3 years. A minor cannot legally consent to anything but an adult man certainly can consent to other adults. Fast forward 40 years and society NOW knows that a gay man with the ability to bottom can certainly be R by another man solo. In the past such acts on an adult man were thought to only occur by a gang or drugs not a solo. Jose had girly arms and a large gut so it is reasonable for the prosecutor 40 years ago to think tall athletic Erik liked it or learned to like it in exchange for being a financially kept man. Even the laws regarding R back then in CA were all about women victims and not male victims.
What their parents did to them for years is absolutely horrific; sexual abuse, mental abuse, physical abuse. Plus, this was the 90s where even the court said that male rape wasn't possible, so the brothers were lying... to stand in court and tell everyone that your father had been sexually abusing you is incredibly courageous, especially back then. One of the brothers said that their father would hold his head under the water of their private pool because he wasn't performing at swimming to his father's impossibly high expectations. Those boys were tortured and terrified. They literally thought they would be killed.... too scared to leave, terrifying to stay. Fear does crazy shit to people when their very life is threatened. Their story deserves to be shared; they've served their time, no danger to society; they deserve peace and freedom and to be BELIEVED.
They will get a chance to speak to be freed. Last year a man confessed that he was sexually abused by Jose.
@eltonmiguel5359 Yeah, I had heard about that, so I hope that there can be freedom for those men and justice for the man who came forward. They all deserve to be believed.
there is no proof that their parents did anything to them. Its literally the words of convicted murderers.
@miecolebeverly5330 It's incredibly difficult to get an abuse case all the way to court. Mine certainly didn't. Experts have said that both Erik and Lyle were showing classic signs of being severely traumatised... you can't fake that level of broken spirit. It's people like you who stop survivors coming forward or speaking up at all. Ignorance really isn't an excuse in this day and age. I've explained myself. Good day to you.
@@miecolebeverly5330 Say you haven't watched the trial without saying you haven't watched the trial. What about the new victim that was also abused by the pdf you're defending?? Should we not believe him either because it's "only his word"?!

@@Tomy_Yon Entirely redundant statement.
@@rielaxault you don't think that's very disturbing?
What did the parents do wrong?
@@ReadbyWisteriaFrom what I recall, the brothers came out, saying the dad was sexually abusing them.
I’m really relieved by the majority of the comments I’m reading here. The “monsters” were Jose and Kitty and I’m glad most people seem to have caught onto that now. Years ago you’d get horrified responses from people if you defended the brothers, I know I did. I truly hope we get to see the day they are released from prison. It’s been over 3 decades, they absolutely paid whatever dues anyone could reasonably expect, and then some.
oh yeah so then itll be another gypsy rose situation where we now know she's just as bad as her mother
they never gonna get out
Men still defend their father probably cos they’re not any better than him and would do the same if they wouldn’t get in trouble
I cried watching the actual brothers go through trail. The sexual abuse they endured was horrific and the fact the mother knew was diabolical. I hope they get justice the way Gypsy rose did!
At this point, I don't think they will. It's so unfortunate because no one can to Jose Menendez's defense. Everyone said he was a terrible guy, and family members confirmed the abuse. Kitty Menendez allowed the abuse to happen, according to multiple cousins that lived with them. She literally told them not to disturb Jose and the boys when they were upstairs together. It was disgusting. Erik even said Lyle was the one spending all the money after the murders and I only think he was doing that because he was finally free to do so.
It’s crazy bc apparently the mother was also a participant!😢
They were not abused all the doctors that examined them said there was zero evidence they were abused
They were grown men. They could have left whenever they wanted. Everyone keeps calling them "boys".
You should be hoping they don't ger release. Not the other way around lol
Shortly after this had happened, I was on an airplane and happen to sit next to one of Eric's friends that he played Tennis with this young man had gone to Eric's house numerous amounts of times and said that the mother was even more strange than the father was. And that Eric had broken arms and black eyes and would always make up stories for how he got them. These 2 fellas should have been out of prison years and years ago. If you've ever been abused, you would understand these boys story, god bless them
They were adults when they murdered their parents. They could’ve gone to the police, moved out on their own but then no Rolex watches for them so
I actually fully agree with you tbh…like Gypsy Rose only did 8.5 years because she was ALLEGEDLY “abused” I’m pretty sure these boys had it worse than she did it’s so it’s pretty messed up how both cases are treated completely different

Normally, I'm not a fan of shows about real life killers since I find them exploitative and traumatic for the victims' families. However, I think this show will do good in not only bringing to light the abuse erik and lyle endured and the monsturous nature of the parents, but also encourages conversations about abuse within families, especially POC families. I also hope this show renews enough interest in the case to set Erik and Lyle free.
Let’s so hope 🤞
@semafodje782 New evidence has been brought to light as well as another person who has come forward saying that he was abused by Jose Menendez as well. There's a potential light at the end of the tunnel. The more people know the truth about this case, especially those too young to know or remember it at the time, the more people can also call for their release.
It’s sad because everybody will Fight to get Eric and Lyle free not understanding that there are thousands of other people in their same situation for the same reasons but without the glamorous looks or the connections to Hollywood that the Menendez brothers have. Does Netflix ever think about how these productions are genuinely harmful?
1:52 "you don't murder your parents that way. that's not about money. that's about something deeper and darker". So true. While I agree that what they did was wrong AF, people should ask themselves what led them to that point. We are always so quick to paint a bad person but we never seem to ask ourselves what led them to that point. Some monsters aren't born, but made.
THIS! The amount of times they shot them also points to the fact that their murders were VERY personal. Money does NOT make you shoot your parents in the face multiple times. Their bodies were completely obliterated.
Dominick Dunne interview a lot of the Menedez circle and he was conviced money and greed was the strongest motive

Monsters are Jose and Kitty. Lyle and Erik did wrong yes but nothing was worth spending another day of living with Jose.
But as adult men they could have left Jose’s house anytime. Jose already bought Lyle a condo over 2000 miles away, a car, and paid his college tuition. Erik testified that his parents wanted him out the house, changed the locks, and refused to give him a key. How would any jury agree that they killed their parents to not have to live with Jose when they could have moved away to college, got jobs, moved in with a girlfriend, moved in with friends, joined the army, etc.

@@eltonmiguel5359 What about the crime they did to their mother? What you said contradicts the brothers’ testimonies. Lyle said his abuse stopped at 11 yet he was 22. Erik said only Jose was abusing him as an adult not the mother. Erik also said Jose was always away on business trips and the mother was looking forward to Erik moving out of the house. The parents wanted both brothers out of that house according to Erik AND according to the parents’ actions like buying Lyle a condo in NJ, buying a vacation house that Erik could have moved to, buying the brothers cars, etc. If someone wants you gone out their house how are they trying to keep you around to abuse you? The fact that multiple people have come forward with evidence of their being years of sexual assault is sad. As a survivor of sexual abuse and child rape, the way how they killed them. Thats pure hatred not greed.
The brothers did not handle it well. Prison is full of worse monsters.
Netflix is cashing in on this story. The Menendez Brothers have a very intense, emotional, and complicated relationship with their parents. It's not always picture perfect. There's always hatred in places where you might not expect to find them in.

This has so be visible! Over two decades in jail with no chance of parole even with Menudo's confession! They need another trial at least, it's not the same like in the 90s when nobody believed a man could be abused! So sad and tragic, justice for the Menendez brothers.
I feel like this is glamourising what the brothers actually went through. Netflix cashing in on their trauma. Their monster father was a big music exec, the entertainment industry perpetually using young innocent lives for their own gain. Hoping that it brings some sort of hope to their case, they served their time. The argument of imperfect self defence should stand! and new evidence should call for a retrial or their release ITS NOT FAIR THEY ARE STILL LOCKED UP! An interesting fact is the actor who plays the father is Javier Bardem
He deserves an Oscar next year for Dune 2.
How can a father sexually abuse his own sons and literally introducing homosexuality. Sick. I’m not condoning what the son’s did but after years and years of it. It would make anyone crazy.
I don’t get people who say they don’t condone when they know what the parents did and this should be a justice less sick fucks in the world at least I don’t blame the brothers one bit
Nicholas Alexander chavez you absolute icon
If only he wasn't in a relationship.
So sorry for the guys. What evil parents
This scene is gonna be intense
Which one
@@nicholass4417THE scene
@@lukemckee3970 I hope they do more than just one scene to show the monsters the parents truly were
@@nicholass4417 they probably will
This trailer, the music, the clips, it's everything. I cannot wait
Seems like Anton Chigurh decided to have a family after retirement from being a Hitman
please more trailer. I cant wait to see this.
I wonder how accurate this story will even be
How would we know how accurate a story is ? The parents are dead so we don't get there point of view
Considering literally every documentary about them has at least a few glaring mistakes, I'm gonna go ahead and say now that the show won't be 100% accurate.
Edit: also artistic license. Some things will definitely be dramatised
Not much, hence the ‘based on…’ which lets them off the hook. Dramatic/poetic licence for views like most tv shows.
Of course it will be sensationalized and the killers will most likely be glorified. Just like in real life
Thomistic View of Marriage 3/3: Mutual Subjection of Husband & Wife to Each Other by Sensus Fidelium.
0:34 tells me all I need to know about how this show will be, and that’s accurate and detailed. From the posture of the two brothers, the skin tone, the facial expressions, the clothes, the positioning, very excited to finally see a documentary of this case that is accurate
I watched the first trial, if it had happened in the 2010’s the public’s opinion would have been totally different.
I hope the series also covers how the media and late night comedians were mocking them for crying about the abuse
They literally cried exactly the same way as the fake 911 call after going to the movies and spending over a million dollars and said somebody killed their parents. Not hard to tell how evil and not honest they were. Also one of the brothers favorite movies was the billion dollar boys club which is about 2 guys killing their parents and getting their money.
@@afiftysixteen9584bruh u know in the first trial they presented CP images of the boys as toddlers that was found in the parents possession? And that their family testified to witnessing abuse?
All the people saying Free Gypsy rose should be saying Free Erik and Lyle.
This looks so good. Can't wait
Bro the actor for the dad looks so much like the real person it’s crazy
The trailer should have been less upbeat and more mellow. What the brothers went through was horrible and depressing and the trailer makes it seem like they enjoyed their life.
The happy household that the parents projected for their family you mean?
this!!! how they portrayed lyle in this trailer is so wrong. you should all watch the "law and order" show about the brothers, it is amazing and so real played
Looks very promising! I just hope Lyle isn’t painted as a mastermind in ho manipulated Erik into it like in previous adaptations.
Same and one thing they already got wrong in this show is that the actors playing the brothers just walked in but according to the real brothers they didn’t just walk in with guns they literally ran into that room in real life because they were afraid that if they didn’t get to room before their parents got out that they were gonna die. And also that the room was dark and the brothers in real life couldn’t really see what was going on and the only light on in the room that night was light from the television set
@@rachaelmendoza9290 they're not going to get every detail but hopefully the overall trial and whole story gets told in how it came to that outcome.
@@rudyleal2579 sources?? You're making very bold claims when its also known the brothers help counsel other prisoners in programs but still get a lot of hate simply because of coming from wealthy parents.
Where are your sources the brothers did drugs?

@@rudyleal2579 Bro they were in prison. Thats why there was weight gain. At the point of the trials, the brothers were already in prison around 2 years.
So the parents were the monsters after all? I've got to watch this. 😮
Yup. The dad abused them both physically and sexually and the mom let it happen.
The Menendez brothers deserve a chance at parole
