    I don't have a portfolio 💼 and it's really held me back from great opportunities. I tried everything to make one but like cv I just find it hard to fit what I like into a showcase that will be judged. I had the same problem in high school I ended up making work to pass the grade instead of truly reflecting myself in my work.
    I only started making little pieces that I want to make this year but I still struggle. Thank you for making this video it's really encouraging and helpful to know your not the only one who shares the similar struggle. I love your art work ❤️

      2damecuteUK Hello there, thanks for sharing :) So many illustrators I talk to have the same struggle...
      I finally ended up making a portfolio for my children's work, maybe 6 months after this video and it is SO DIFFERENT than anything in here.
      And my brand illustration work is totally different than that so, there's definitely not just one answer. 🤓

    I also thought I didn't have a portfolio, but it was because of being disorganized and not thinking of a Portfolio as a priority for my job, that I ended up slacking and accepting clients that didn't match with my style or values, sometimes the projects wouldn't come to an end because the clients were more lost than I was. I had to end up going back to my corporate work.
    A month ago I quit my job and by gathering all my former work and the favors I did for friends or family, I'm learning from the things I didn't do in the past and it's helping me setting tasks for myself in order to improve older designs and educating my skills to be better at producing.
    Like plenty, I have insecurities, but this video has helped me to reassure that by doing what I want, I'm learning more. Thanks for sharing such a useful experience.

    Yeah, my portfolio is a jumbled mess. Mostly I just make a ton of work. It has worked out in spite of me. I love you videos. They make me happy.

      jawara blake thanks man 🙏 that really means a lot. I think they're important for me... and they usually make me super uncomfortable, and that's why i figure I should keep doing them 😌

    Thanks for this video jess- I'm making big changes to my work in the coming months (I've gotten trapped in a certain way of working for an industry i don't care for that much!) i want to illustrate kids books but feel like i don't have much of a portfolio to support that and feel a bit paralysed with fear when I think about building one! I just need to create artwork and not constantly rule that its not good enough.

      Megan Tucker yes! I mean trust me I was exactly in that spot like a year ago - I wasn't even really enjoying drawing bc the pressure I put on myself to make things "perfect" was so huge. I still give myself pep talks about this on a weekly basis ☺️

    those alphabet pieces are awesome!
    I find that the idea of having a strong portfolio before searching for jobs can also be an excuse. I confess I saw it as one, I mean "I can't really send emails if I don't have a strong portfolio to start with". So you postpone it thinking it's not that bad because you'll still working (you're working on that portfolio) and you don't have to deal with the rejection right away :)

    • @studioxjess
      @studioxjess  7 років тому

      somebodyelsa yes exactly! At this point I feel like if we have an instagram and send out some promos do we ever need a formal portfolio? I don't know, haha still trying to figure out what works 🤓

    Beautiful work and a great message! I so need to work on my portfolio! I like your idea for giving yourself assignments. That was my favorite part of school. What's the name of that children's book and who was the author, by the way? Thanks for sharing!

    • @studioxjess
      @studioxjess  7 років тому

      Yva Lovee Arts hello! Sorry for the delayed response. The author goes by the name "Henry Vinegar" he is a friend and we were both trying to break into the picture book world. The book isn't published (and probably never will be bc the industry is such a BEAST) but called Mister Toploftical. I need to give myself a new assignment right now... so key for staying motivated and inspired for me! 🤓x

    I needed to hear this so much!
    I've kind of decided (I guess it's official now lol) to become an illustrator and this is one thing I am trying to get around to... and it's been pretty intense, specially because since I'm a sculpture student you can imagine my artwork and interests are all over the place and, like you, I felt like I didn't have anything.
    So this video has been really really helpful! Thank you soooo much Jess for sharing and for making such bomb videos! lol You're wonderful!
    Subscribing now!

    • @studioxjess
      @studioxjess  7 років тому +1

      theflyingslippers hi Ani! First of all congratulations 🙌 it is wonderful to know what you want to do and to tell the world. Most people never really know, I guess artists don't have that problem 😉 one of my good friends went from sculptor to illustrator and her work is so lovely and three dimensional, I think most "other" skills work in our favorite as illustrators to give us a unique and true voice.
      Do let me know how the journey is going for you! I'll be here the doing same 🤓 x -j

    Awesome video as usual, totally agree with the idea of not constricting yourself to one style or way of doing things.
    If you don't mind tell me, what editing software do you use? your videos are always so creative!

    • @studioxjess
      @studioxjess  7 років тому +2

      Fatma Sahem hello! Oh my yes the style thing was such a big hang up of mine for so long 😌 I have used everything for editing! I started with iMovie, went on to a one month final cut trial (my fave) and then had to switch to premiere pro bc I use adobe for everything else. I must say I spent waaaaay too much time editing though 🙃

    • @FatmaSahem
      @FatmaSahem 7 років тому

      Thanks, I'm using final cut now, I tried primer pro but was too complex I didn't know what to do lol maybe I'll watch some tutorials and learn some skills.

    i think the idea of a portfolio can seem scary or intimidating because that's when it's all laid bare. Your sending a piece of yourself out to be openly judged and that can be hard, especially when these pieces become your pride and joy...
