"My father worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay; it was his true medium, a master." Jean Shepherd was a great humorist.
I love the dad in this movie. He’s a grumpy old bastard for most of the movie, but he just lights up at how delighted Ralphie is at the BB gun. He’s a curmudgeon, but you can just tell he loves his family.
My old man was the same way but unlike Ralph's Dad he took the time to let me and my brother know he loved us. And he loved Christmas Story RIP Pop Merry Christmas
16:13 He grew up during the great depression and probably had to work since as long as he can remember. He wasn't an achiever in school, probably couldn't do sports, and held a low-middle class job that was just enough to get by (everything needed to be fixed constantly). So this was the one thing in his life that was his and his alone in his eyes.
The "deranged Easter bunny" line was improvised by the actor playing the old man And the mother's reaction during the whole Chinese restaurant scene was genuine She was given a different script than the rest of the cast so she had no idea what was going to happen
This story was based on the actual childhood experience of the screenwriter, who was also a popular radio personality in the 70's. I remember listening to him at night, when he would riff about anything and everything. He is also the narrator of the movie.
Yep. From the story collection called "In God We Trust (All Others Pay Cash)" by Jean Shepherd. Hard to believe, but Peter Billingsley (Ralphie) is also the guy who worked for Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) in the first "Ironman" movie and gets yelled at ("TONY STARK WAS ABLE TO BUILD THIS IN A CAVE!!! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!!") and also in "Spider-Man Far From Home" as Quintin Beck's (Mysterio) assistant. His head is shaved so it's hard to tell.
@@JustWasted3HoursHere He also played the head elf, in the movie Elf. I also wonder if he has at least a cameo in 8 Bit Christmas, which by the ads look very similar to A Christmas Story.
One of the things I love about this movie is that it doesn't favor either of Raphie's parents against the other. They both have their flaws, yet they also come through for Ralphie in their own way: Mom waved off his fight with Scut Farkus (and his torrent of cuss words while doing so, especially so soon after he dropped the single F-bomb while changing the tire) as no big deal, while Dad got him the Red Ryder when everybody else was against it.
Same here. It makes me think of when I was a kid and it didn’t matter if i was physically hurt or just sad/scared. Mom would make me feel better no matter what.
It's not Christmas unless I watch this movie. So many memorable moments. I still say if Ralphie and Schwartz had run to the window with the rest of the class it would have made them look less guilty. Cuz staying seated means that you don't have to look outside, you already know. And the fact that they were the only two still at their desks was not lost on Ms. Shields, priceless.
Peter Billingsley who played Ralpie has gone on to become a successful movie producer and director, he was executive producer of Iron Man and directed the movie couples retreat and has produced other movies. He also made a cameo as one of the elf’s in the movie Elf.
This is a dang Mandela Effect for me. I remember growing up hearing repeatedly how Ralphie, a.k.a. Messy Marvin, had died at an early age. I do not recall the cause, possibly car wreck or mystery illness.

I think that's what is the most beautiful thing about Ralphie finally getting his BB gun, in the end it showed that even though he never asked his father he was the one who thought of getting it for him; showing how much he did care for him and wanted to make Christmas even more special for him.
It's a major award! The scene at the end where the "duck is smiling" they did not tell the Mother what was going to happen in the scene. So her reaction is genuine.

I always have to watch this at least once on Christmas Day when TBS plays it on a loop. Also my favorite part of Christmas Day over the past few years has been when we go to my brother's girlfriend's for breakfast. I mean she and her family always put out a delicious spread; ham, egg bake, buttered English muffins, hell even oreo balls and peanut butter balls!
When we were little, our mother decided that since we were always too busy and excited on Christmas to eat breakfast, we would eat it Christmas Eve night before we went to bed. The tradition continues to this day, now we all take our own kids to Nana's on Christmas Eve for a big elaborate nighttime breakfast. And of course we watch A Christmas Story.
This movie brings back so many memories because my dad LOVED it and lived for Christmas. We watched it every year when I was a kid. Now my dad is gone, and it really hits harder than ever. I learned from him to recapture those childhood Christmas feels by bringing them to my own children and those in my community. I run a nonprofit that does a lot of outreach for children at Christmas time, and it really brings back that childhood magic for me.

Loved hearing you guys talk about Grandma's cooking. i myself have been without Grandma's since 2006, but did have a lot of time with them till then,,,,...and I think most everyone would agree, there is nothing like Grandma's cooking. My one Grandma was widowed since the 1970's. She did that whole entire dinner for about 20 people...all by herself, from the meat, potatoes, sides, desserts...nothing was packaged. She never once complained about how much work it was, and if you tried to help you were told to get out of the kitchen and enjoy yourself.
19:29 the face i made when i witnessed my cousin get spanked. We were goofing off in my grandfathers backyard and told us to never EVER go in his garden. I knew when would happen if we did but my cousin, the brave yet foolish boy, ran right in and destroyed the squash that was growing. I dont know if he was watching in the shadows or not but pawpo ran to him with his belt. I could only watch in frozen terror. And may we all have a Happy, Healthy New Year!!! 🎄🎆🎉🎊
You should watch the sequel to see what happened to Scut after Ralphie beat him up. The original cast comes back except the original mother and the original father had passed away. The sequel is really good.
My dad was born in 1940 and when this movie came out it was the perfect movie to him. He loved this movie. He grew up in this era listening to the radio and wanted the Red Ryder BB gun too. We watch this movie every year and love this movie. Even better this movie came out as a Broadway musical. The touring Broadway company came through here in Utah in 2019. I usher at the theater that it was at and watched it twice. It was even better than the movie. The musical part they do for the lamp was hysterical. My dad is gone and at the end of the musical when the little boy was in bed and the narrator was remembering his dad giving him the BB gun. I cried remembering my dad talking about getting one for Christmas. It was a beautiful memory for me too.
I've never had so much fun watching someone watch a movie! I loved your reactions and the way you got nostalgic about your own childhood Christmases. I tend to think someone younger than me won't get as much out of a movie like this (I'm 58). You proved me wrong. Merry Christmas!
Remember this film was set at the end of the thirties early forties. Hence snow white. His wanting the gun was so cute. This is a staple of Christmas watching.
I live about 45 minutes away from the Christmas Story house! You can do a tour, they have a gift shop and you can even stay at the house and the bumpass's house!
11:13 -- if you get stuck to a pole.. use gallons of warm water to heat up the pole until you're not stuck to it anymore.. Also.. Don't get stuck to a pole in the first place...
"Three blocks away, Schwartz was getting his." Ralphie bears false witness against his friend, just to get the bar of soap out of his mouth for a minute. What a great kid!
This movie was and will always continue to play during Christmas at our house, such a classic. The game cube with Luigi's Mansion and Super Smash Bros Melee was also my red ryder bb gun and I remember that it was one of those gifts that was hidden and had someone else's name on it to throw me off. I also remember one Christmas when my brothers and I got Donkey Kong Country 2 and we immediately played it on the same day. The tongue stuck to the pole scene was achieved by the actor sticking his tongue over a hole and a little motorized vacuum, hidden in the snow was turned on, which would gently hold his tongue to the pole to make it look like it was actually frozen on there.
I love the shots of the icy trees on Christmas morning with the music playing, and the various train sounds throughout the movie. Reminds me of my childhood in the Midwest. Merry Christmas guys. 🎄
You guys brought me down memory lane. I feel the same way as you guys. When my grandmother died, Christmas was never the same. The family stopped getting together, because my grandma was the glue that kept everything together. I miss those days. Watching this with you guys makes me feel like you guys are the brothers I never had. So much fun! Thank you guys, and I can’t wait for next Christmas now.
This film is basically mandatory, especially for every Clevelander because the old heads will never let you forget that the house in the movie is from Cleveland 🤣
I agree, there is nothing that compares to Christmas time when you are a kid. As an adult, we have lost several family members over the years and they are definitely not the same. I took those years for granted so you definitely need to cherish them.
You guys do Christmas right. I agree with you about the festivities from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day. I know how you feel about the memories and beloved family members no longer around for this joyous time. BTW, The older man in the hat at Higgbies is the narrator (Jean Shepherd) and the originator/author of the Christmas Story based on his childhood experiences.
My fav part of Christmas is being Santa!! My kids are too old to really believe anymore but I really loved being Santa. I have the same fond memories of my childhood Christmas that you do. No one can cook fried eggs like my mom did on Christmas morning. Mom’s eggs for breakfast and her mashed potatoes at dinner are little things I’ll never forget. Also, there is that one special gift that I always make a big deal out of each year. Always a production regarding that one gift. It’s usually last and usually something you didn’t ask for and aren’t expecting but is a huge deal. Watching Christmas movies…claymation and animated shows! It was such a special time. I really miss it.
Ralphie and his a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200 shot Range Model air rifle🤣🤣🤣. Christmas classic at it's finest. This movie and the grinch is a must during Christmas time 🎄
I grew up watching this movie. It truly is pure nostalgia. My favorite Christmas gift was the Nintendo Entertainment System. Nothing like the mid 80's and Christmas.
I remember the first time I saw this movie I actually came in the middle of it, about the time his teacher and his mother are chanting, "you'll shoot your eye out", at him and I asked the person with me, what on earth are you watching? He told me, surprised I hadn't seen it before. I now watch this movie every Christmas. It is just the best. So many quotable lines! Oh, and as someone who grew up with the old metal ice cube trays, the easiest way to get metal stuck to your skin off is simply a little warm water. Great reaction!
My family and I know this movie by heart. No matter how many times we watch it, it never gets old and we laugh every time. I love seeing other people enjoy it as much as I do!
I absolutely LOVE this film. It is so authentic to the period which is just a little before my time - I was born in '47 and things hadn't changed that much by then. My dad had a car very much like the one Ralphie's dad drove. And I always wanted a B-B gun but my folks wouldn't buy one for me because ---- "You'll shoot your eye out!"
They actually made a sequel that was awful that had one of the guys from home alone it but a year or two ago they made another one with a lot of the original cast back, was really heartfelt and actually brought tears to my eyes. If you guys are still checking these comments you should check it out.
To answer your question about the flag pole thing, just pour some warm water at the point of contact. Your tongue is still gonna freaking hurt and possibly be permanently damaged because you essentially gave it bad freezer burn though. Just so you know this works with ice cubes too. I've known a couple of people who've gotten their tongue's stuck to ice cubes.
I watch this on the 24-hour marathon on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I love this movie. When Ralphie goes to see Santa at the mall and when he stands in line, the man that tells him he is cutting the line is the director, narrator and author of the book. That scene where the dogs stole the turkey is psa to not leave the turkey out. Plus it still needed to cook.
This is one of our family's favs. On Christmas Eve here in the states one of the cable stations plays it for 24 hrs and it's become a fun tradition at our parent's house while we cook. We all know every single line in the movie and we've have been saying FRAGILE the way the dad did for yrs. 😂😂😂😂
This film is on my top 5 Christmas movie list. When I was a kid really didn't care for it. But after growing up I found that I actually have memories of stuff that happened in my life that I recognize in the movie! A truly great classic.
My grandmother and great aunt loved saving all of our Christmas butter cookies in the freezer. We still have frozen cookies too! Definitely brings back memories.
Thank you thank you thank you! This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE Christmas movie. I grew up watching this movie LONG before it was popular and iconic! I love it so much because my dad would always commentate about how accurate the time period was when he was a kid in upstate/western NY. And now that his kids are grown he tells us about pretty close it was with us (his kids) growing up. How "simple" and "easy" life was. Simple families living simple lives. Walking to school in the snow. Being bundled up to go outside. It's not the movie itself, it's what it means to my family. Even though it's a pretty great movie! Again, thank you 💕 I think my dad loves it so much because he also put his tongue On a frozen rail when he was a kid!! He said he ripped "half" his tongue off, then his mom yelled at him for getting blood all over the front steps 😂😜
The Mom in this movie reminds me so much of my own Mom. My entire extended familiy, when they watch this movie, say, “That’s Aunt Sherry!” The resemblance in both appearance and behavior is so uncanny.
Love this movie. Watch it almost every year. Love the Dad and all the kids. Just classic stuff. I remember the first time I swore at the dinner table. I didn’t know it was a swear word. Heard my older brothers saying it. My dad chased me all over the house. Yeah, those were the days. Good reaction.
From things I've heard over many of your videos, it sounds like you guys had/have the kind of childhood, life, and family that so many dream of. It makes me SO happy, and happy for you, to hear that your lives are so full of love and support. Merry holidays to you, from CO. 🥰
Those snow suits were hard to move in, but so warm. Bundled up in that you felt unstoppable. Dive into the biggest snow pile you could find and just keep having fun. The nostalgia triggered by this movie what makes it immortal. The mumbled words his dad says thru the movie was his way of swearing without getting a worse rating for profanity. I literally heard that from my mother when I mentioned a bb gun back in the day. "No, you'll shoot your eye out".
We watched this movie at Christmas every year, along with "warning our hands at the Yule Log" Lol before dinner. I have fond, fond memories. I do have being so far away from my sons and my mom and sister, however, memories are great.
"My father worked in profanity the way other artists might work in oils or clay; it was his true medium, a master." Jean Shepherd was a great humorist.
THE funniest line I have ever heard!
I love the dad in this movie. He’s a grumpy old bastard for most of the movie, but he just lights up at how delighted Ralphie is at the BB gun. He’s a curmudgeon, but you can just tell he loves his family.

I tend to think someone younger than me won't get as much out of a movie like this (I'm 58). You proved me wrong.
Merry Christmas!
Remember this film was set at the end of the thirties early forties. Hence snow white. His wanting the gun was so cute. This is a staple of Christmas watching.
The dad is the total unsung hero in this movie and it a MUST WATCH every Christmas since I was little. Happy Holidays to you and your families ❤🖤
6:10 "He's got glasses he'll be fine" You're more right than you know lmao
I live about 45 minutes away from the Christmas Story house! You can do a tour, they have a gift shop and you can even stay at the house and the bumpass's house!
im 5 minutes from the museum in Hammond. i need to get to Cleveland to see the house.
It comes around again when you have a family of your own. The magic comes back through their eyes and the memories and traditions you build with them.
This plays all day on Christmas day at my house, and up until than, it's National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and Nightmare before Christmas ❤💚❤💚❤
ive watched CV 4 nights in a row at this point.
@@markmac2206 such a good movie, and a lot of parents turn into Clark every year...lol
@@b.a.j5168 when putting up the lights, im one of them!
8:10 Randy looks like he's ready for his second bowl of Malt-O-Meal!
It always makes me cry when I see how happy the dad gets watching Ralphie open the BB gun.
11:13 -- if you get stuck to a pole.. use gallons of warm water to heat up the pole until you're not stuck to it anymore.. Also.. Don't get stuck to a pole in the first place...
"Three blocks away, Schwartz was getting his."
Ralphie bears false witness against his friend, just to get the bar of soap out of his mouth for a minute. What a great kid!
Low key Schwartz's punishment for making Flick stick his tongue to the flagpole
Couldn't agree more, I realize how much more I appreciate those moments now that I'm older.
Christmas isn't the same any more... but you can feel it again with your own kids and watching the joy on their faces.
"YOULL SHOOT YOURE EYE OUT KID" Best qoute ever! Great reaction brothers...u guys rock!!!!
"You'll shoot your eye out kid.' lol!
I miss my kids being little. I just loved to see their faces light up
Ralphie and his a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200 shot Range Model air rifle🤣🤣🤣. Christmas classic at it's finest. This movie and the grinch is a must during Christmas time 🎄
Jean Shepherd was a national treasure. He sure had a golden voice for humor. He almost sounds like John Candy.
He was the angry man in the Santa line
Nothing as an adult is as good as Christmas was at 10 years old.
I grew up watching this movie. It truly is pure nostalgia. My favorite Christmas gift was the Nintendo Entertainment System. Nothing like the mid 80's and Christmas.
The NES was probably my fondest gift memory. There was nothing else like it.
One of my favorite Christmas movies! You're right. It's very nostalgic. It brings to mind certain experiences and feelings I had when I was a kid.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. If you have cable, a station plays it on repeat all day on Christmas.
Aw man the part where Ralphie finally beats Farcus's ass and then gives his toady a nice hit as well as always amusing lmao
Flick is a true G for not snitching.... respect!
One of our staples every Christmas is this movie. It just brings you back, no matter which generation you come from.
Favorite part of the movie was when Ralphie beat the bully up and how he was screaming and cryin😂😂😂
23:01 gosh I wonder why I knew you guys would have this reaction 😂
“What could that possibly be in such a big box?”
It’s a major award! Mind power, see, mind power….
Considering all the 24hr Specials, there is no question that I have watched this movie more times than any other.
frah gee lay... must be Italian.
@@markmac2206 😂😂😂
This film is on my top 5 Christmas movie list. When I was a kid really didn't care for it. But after growing up I found that I actually have memories of stuff that happened in my life that I recognize in the movie! A truly great classic.
My grandmother and great aunt loved saving all of our Christmas butter cookies in the freezer. We still have frozen cookies too! Definitely brings back memories.
Freezing cookies only adds more flavor lol
We always get a 24 hour marathon of this movie on Christmas Eve. I love this classic
When you become a parent, the joy is the same. You see it thru their eyes. You get that kid giggle feeling
Again, thank you 💕
I think my dad loves it so much because he also put his tongue On a frozen rail when he was a kid!! He said he ripped "half" his tongue off, then his mom yelled at him for getting blood all over the front steps 😂😜
9:46 why does Chris look like he lived that moment where he licked a ice pole
The Mom in this movie reminds me so much of my own Mom. My entire extended familiy, when they watch this movie, say, “That’s Aunt Sherry!” The resemblance in both appearance and behavior is so uncanny.
Love this movie. Watch it almost every year. Love the Dad and all the kids. Just classic stuff. I remember the first time I swore at the dinner table. I didn’t know it was a swear word. Heard my older brothers saying it. My dad chased me all over the house. Yeah, those were the days. Good reaction.
31:51 The smile on both your faces! Awesome!
I am so glad you guys liked this movie- it's one of my holiday favorites. Every year I try to watch it at least once.
I knew they were gonna take the part where the bully says"when i tell you to come you better come" the wrong way lmfao
