Shary Bartlett presents an intimate glimpse into her unique encaustic photo alteration techniques. Shary hand-alters photographs, then bathes them in encaustic wax, adding texture and details with coloured wax pigments and paints.

How lovely! The narrative was remarkable. I can smell the beeswax even now. What a pleasure to see your photos in their new guise. Congratulations Shary!
Thanks so much, Catherine.
Shary is a fantastic art teacher and a lovely person. Congratulations on this lovely video!
Thanks so much, Bethany! You are an awesome teacher too!
Isn't it good that different people have different talents and passions! Well done.
Well, you won't catch me taking on your talent and passion for driving race cars, Colin! :) Yes, it's good we are all different. At least we share a passion for travel.!
I like your description of interplay of photos and encaustic. It's very validating for me.
Thanks, Lillian. It's pretty easy to do so go for it!
I think there is a snobbery about incorporating photos into encaustics, but I too like the effect.
Lillian Brue Encaustic seems to welcome all kinds of partners. :)
Love your attitude! I agree.
Great video Shary!
Took a one day with Shary, and it was wonderful!
Merci Marie, It was so great to see what great paintings you made in the class!
This came out GREAT! I just added it to my channel so everyone can enjoy it. Well done.
Thanks Linda! You have so many great videos too!
So beautiful, Shari!!! Thank you so much for sharing this. I felt infused with beauty upon watching.
Thanks Judy. And I love your Nia classes in Vancouver!
Shary, great encaustic work, so inspiring!
Thank You so much, Helena. I keep meaning to do more but it was a wonderful experience to make it. Cheers.
Love this Shary. One of my objectives is to learn about encaustics and photography this year. Love your effort to rather express the feeling/vibe/hidden message/meaning of the photograph than the factual reality. Real right brain stuff that relays the essence of the envisioning process. Very well done!
Hi Sarah sarah . Thanks for your encouraging words. Encaustic is a great medium and you will love it!
Recently I became intrigued by the possibility of encaustic wax as an art form and have spent hours watching videos and researching books on the topic from the library. I see your combination of photographs and wax as very much what I was looking for. Telling a story using photos, collage and free style to convey the feelings behind the story. I am retired, studying classical piano and want to add this encaustic wax to my daily life. I look forward to the possibilities that await me!
Thanks for your comment, Sylvia. I’m So pleased that you have discovered Encaustic. It is a fabulous medium. Enjoy.
Everything about this video, right down to your voice, makes me want to "do what you do". What a nice video.
Thanks Teresa, Try it. You'll like it! :)
Beautiful, can't wait for your workshop!
Yay!
Love your work Shary, really interesting techniques, makes me think i've got to push it more! I've been doing photo encaustic since 2003 and feel like i've still got a lot to learn!
Pete Kelly thanks Pete. I always have a lot to learn too, from encaustic. That is what it is such a fascinating medium. Have fun with it! Thanks for your note.
Loved the explanation of this medium. Would consider taking one of your workshops.
I would love to have you join us!
Hi Leanne, Glad you enjoyed the video. Do try it. There are lots of great books on Encaustic - try looking for some by Patricia Baldwin Seggebruch who has made several. I have a chapter in her book, Encaustic Revelation, on working with encaustic and fabric and fibres. The pastels I am using in the video are called PanPastels. They are wonderful! They are very high quality pigments and will last a lifetime! Just brush on with a soft makeup applicator and fuse lightly with the heat gun. Have fun :)
Oops!
That reply is from Shary- not Claire. !

What a lovely video. As I work with encaustic I so enjoyed your thoughts and share them as well. Thank you.
Thanks Edith Rae. I appreciate your comments. It is a wonderful medium! I never tire of it. Happy painting :)
thank you so much - this was wonderful to watch!

Thanks so much, Arlene.
Wonderful, Sylvia. Daily encaustic is great for the creative soul! It's so easy to take photos these days too, so this becomes a bit of a record of each day! :)
Hi there cat. You can’t seal the image but you can carefully fuse the transfer into the wax to protect it. No too much heat or it will break up! Just practice and you’ll perfect it.
Hi Patricia, Yes, since it is not an instructional video I don't go into a lot of detail. I use all kinds of papers and printing techniques in my work. These are commercially developed wet-processed photos, but I would suggest you experiment with different papers, printing and alteration techniques to see what works. Play is the great innovator! Have fun :)
I love your techniques in photo-encaustics! Your images are so sensitive, yet colorful! I am new to encaustics and I do a lot of photo transfers. Do you know of any product that I can seal the transfers with so that they don't get scratched? Big hug, cat
hi Cat, thanks, You can sell your transfers with wax! A thin layer of wax will do the trick. Hope that helps.
This was a great inspiration video. 👏🏻 You should do more. 😊
Thanks Betty
Ann, I plan to!
Thanks Betty
Ann, I plan to!
This is absolutely beautiful! I would love to learn this technique. Hopefully you will be able to make a tutorial video this year :-)!
Rhonda Irby. thanks Rhonda. Let's keep in touch and I will let you know about my on line course . You can join my mailing list if you like at shary@sharybartlett.com. 😀
I joined the mailing list. Can't wait until your next online class. I hope I can participate.
lovely video!
Daphne Roubini Thank you, Daphne. Hope you are well.
Beautifully narrated video Shary. Can you please tell me what inscribing electrical tool you are using right at the beginning of the video? Thank you.
Hi Merran, It is an electric electric stylus by Arts Encaustic although other companies make them too. They have different heads you can attach like a metal brush or mini iron. Have fun!
Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge. I appreciate it so much. One questions I have is what kind of paint you used to enchanted the picture?. Thanks again.
CAROLINA RESTREPO Thank you for your encouragement, Carolina. I use encaustic paint which is a combination of beeswax, damar resin, and pigments.
Where do you purchase your medium? What is visible in the video looks very clear, unlike the amber tones I commonly find to purchase. Lovely video..
I purchase my medium from Enkaustikos, R & F Pigments and Kama Pigments. The amber pollinated wax is filtered and called "white beeswax." It is great because it does not change the colour of the image underneath. Although the natural coloured beeswax gives photos a sepia feel, which is great too. Good luck.
You have an online course? I would love to know about it. I love your work.
Hi Sue, Thanks for your interest! At the moment I don't have an online course, but I am hoping to do one in the next year. Please send me a note to my e mail if you would like me to add you to my mailing list. shary@sharybartlett.com
Hello Shary,
Lovely. The only thing you have left out here is the papers you are using.
Thank you.
+Patricia Leeds
Hi Patricia, I have used all kinds of papers: watercolour, card stock, inkjet and laserjet prints and commercially printed wet and dry processed photos. This one in the video is a wet-processed silver halide print.
So, so beautiful! I would love to try this one day...can you please tell me what you are using to color the photo at 2:05 -2:14 with please? Is it a type of pastel...(am I allowed to request the name of the brand?)
Leeanne Skudder Hello Leanne.
It is called PanPastel.
Thanks very much, Daphne!
Will you be teaching any workshops in Santa Fe? I would love to study with you.
Carol Mell Thanks Carol. I would love to teach in Santa Fe! I love it there. I am hoping an opportunity might come up for Santa Fe this next year, but if you know of an opportunity, please feel free to contact me. I am teaching encaustic photo alteration in Peru next March 2016. Might you be interested in joining us? Information is on my website, www.sharybartlett.com.
Shary I know its been awhile but I hope you will still respond. What do you use to mount your photos to the cradle board? Or do you just let the wax do the work?
Hello ann,
I’m sorry I must have missed your question. I use either PVA glue or acrylic medium or Yes paste to glue my photos to the cradle board. I find if I use the wax to glue it then it comes loose board. Good luck.
Thank you so much for your reply. I love what you are doing! I have been experimenting but want to make sure that the end result is sound. This helps a lot.
Anne Woodard Totally! That is the right way to proceed. I’d love to see your results. You can always email me! Good luck.
How do you mount/frame the photos when you are done?
Hi Annie,
I either work on cradled panels, so I don't need to mount the images. Or, I pop them into a floater frame. Hope that helps.
thanks you for this video tres intéressant. prenez vous l'original sinon imprimez vous votre photo sur papier photo glacé ou simple papier imprimante. merci Francyne Plante
Merci Francyne, J'imprime mon original sur papier pour l'aquarelle professional d'habitude.
@@sharybartlett5739 merci

Thanks very much, Betty ann. I really appreciate your kind words. I do plan to do more, it's just a matter of time!
Wonderful, Lillian. There is so much to be discovered with wax and photos! Have fun.
Thanks very much for your kind words. I understand your company offers excellent instruction in English, so your comments are much appreciated.
Thank you all for your encouragement and kind words. I do love encaustic wax!
