Wax on paper journalling - texture

I always thought that Wax would crack off paper when it was bent, but I have been experimenting and had great success using encaustic in my daily paper journal! So much fun and so freeing to paint intuitively on a piece of paper that doesn't hold a lot of importance or expense for me. I've created a course on many exciting treatments I've discovered for paper and encaustic. This is one of the t...

You introduced me to encaustic when I took a few of your classes in adult education when I lived in Vancouver almost 15 years ago. I was a total beginner, with no confidence that I could do anything. But you helped me become a process person, not a product person, and I still go into my little studio area almost every day to create. You taught so many great techniques, many of which I still use; but my absolute favorite is encaustic. I’m so glad I found this video so I could thank you from the bottom of my waxy little heart.😁❤️💛💙
Hi Susan, So lovely to hear from you. I remember you well and especially your enthusiasm and creative talent. I love your comment about being a process person. Still holds true for me! I'm glad it spoke to you. Just so you know I have created a new studio space in Vancouver Canada to teach encaustic and mixed media - and it is amazing. Starting next week I'm teaching there,. my first in person classes since Covid. Just wanted to make sure you are still on my mailing list and know about the classes. Come join me! sharybartlett.newzenler.com/in-person Cheers, Shary

Thanks Vikki. I love this flower so much.
So you put the encaustic over your photos?
I sure do. It looks so dreamy and it’s archival.
I don't understand the irises on the wax surface.
The irises are made of encaustic as well. the accretion is the background substrate for them..
I primed the base of a cradled panel with white and caustic wax, then painted with alcohol inks on that smooth surface, and then I’m fusing the alcohol inks. If you’re interested in learning more check out this link, and I have a whole course on this! Cheers. sharybartlett.newzenler.com/courses/flowing-light
Is everything you're painting on Alcohol ink? Or is some wax based paints?
An absolutely gorgeous voice to accompany the creation of such beautiful works of art. Thank you for sharing. ✨
Thank you so much, Miss starlight! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and… I love your name.
Hello. Do you offer this technique in an online course?
Hi there, I don't offer exactly this technique, but you may be interested in either the course called, Smooth or the course called Flowing Light. Smooth is about pouring smooth surfaces. Very similar to this technique in the video, except that this technique involves many colors, so once you've poured the mini colours on your surface, it's just a matter of fusing them together with a heat gun. The course that is called flowing light: is about using alcohol and India inks, which also create a wonderful, flowing design and surface. Check out the two videos here that outline the course content and let me know if you have any more questions. Thanks for your interest. sharybartlett.newzenler.com Shary

Hi like your style. If your just starting out would your classes be overwhelming?
Thanks Lynne, I am so honoured that you like my style! Thanks for writing. Beginning encaustic painting involves quite a few technical points of information and practice, so I would suggest that you consider learning some of the basics before taking on specific applications. What I would suggest, is that you might like to sign up for the year-long course called Painting with Fire. It’s a wonderful online course taught by 26 of the world’s top Encaustic instructors. I teach classes as part of this international program and it includes beginners classes, weekly online classes, and a wonderful Facebook group. It’s very affordable at 289 USD per year. The year has already begun but all of the classes are available online for a lifetime. Here is the link and you might want to look at it. Lovely! Can you please describe how the watercolour look was achieved with wax?
sure! I painted combination of blues and oranges using encaustic wax on a wooden substrate and fused the wax to melting point, but not overfused. Are you familiar with Encaustic? If so, this should make sense, if you're not familiar with Encaustic, I'd be happy to Are you familiar with Encaustic? @@SharyBartlett thanks for your response! Yes, I’m familiar with encaustic, with a little experience. Love it. This piece is so smoothly blended but the colours remained independent… a product of using the torch instead of the heat gun perhaps?
@@JAP2theP wonderful to know. Don't you love Encaustic? Glad you're familiar with it because it's a bit complicated to answer in a quick response :-) yes, I did use the torch, however, I'm equally fond of a heat gun. I'm pretty sure that I tilted the painting as it was still Molten for dramatic effect. Hope that helps. Cheers.

Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Absolutely, Miss Clark! You can do Encaustic over a water colour painting and it looks beautiful. Just glue your painting to a wood board and let it dry. Then you can paint wax on it. Just don’t put too many layers of wax on, or you will obscure the painting underneath. Maybe two or three layers would be perfect.
Could you do encaustic over a watercolor painting?
Absolutely. Just glue it down really well onto a cradled hardboard and add Wax.
Can an encaustic work survive in an outdoor enviornment?
Great question. Encaustic does not do well in an outdoor environment because it will melt in the sun and will freeze in freezing conditions. In a normal indoor setting, however, Encaustic will last forever as long as it is not exposed to extreme conditions. In fact, encaustic is the most long lasting paint medium in the world. Thanks for asking.
Great fun! Love your space.❤️
Thanks Melissa. I feel really lucky to be here.

This is really helpful. Thank you!
I’m so glad it was helpful! I love this tool and you will too.
Very interesting🤩How do you clean the thin nozzle part?
Great question! I’m not sure which tool’s nozzle you are referring to, however, I generally don’t clean them! I usually just put a new colour in and then the result is a nice line which combines with the previous colour and the new colour I’ve introduced. For example if I started with red, and then add yellow, I have a nice orange in between as it’s emptying out. However, if you want a totally clean nozzle, you can just add a clear wax and as you drag it across a paper towel, it will clean out the nozzle. Let me know if I’ve understood your question correctly. Good luck.
I love seeing how these hand-crafted tools work. The tools are so beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks, Jill. They are really amazing tools and have been enhancing the work of artists for hundreds of years! It’s fun to put them to contemporary use in encaustic painting.
Gorgeous!!!!
Thanks so much, Shirley. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Try out this tool. It’s awesome.
beautiful work 🌞 How do you deal with the general fugitive nature of alcohol ink on encaustic since adding a wax layer wouldn't protect from UV rays?
Hi Alexandra, great question! That is definitely the challenge With alcohol ink. When using it on you pro, you can add a layer of Krylon, fixative, and 2 layers of UV Krylon spray to help protect from fading but these are not compatible with Encaustic. The best protection, as with all fine art, is to place the work in an area that is protected from sunlight, UV rays or halogen lighting. Also, using high-quality inks and blending solution instead of isopropyl alcohol for thinning is helpful. The beautiful intensity and translucency of alcohol inks is so attractive, but it does come with the issues of being fugitive. I always let my collectors know these limitations in advance of purchase. Thanks for such a great question.
Love this! Your artwork is so beautiful. I love the additional detail you've added with the black pen and India Ink.
Thanks Jill. I love that dip pen for detailed work.
Absolutely beautiful, Shary! Your abstracted tree using India ink is stunning. Wonderful tip about using a mirror- I find that taking a photo works for me too to get a different perspective. Your painting at 3:25 reminds me of a heart. Wonderful work.
Thanks so much Dena. I really appreciate your kind words. Yes, I love using a mirror and the painting of the heart…. You got it! Once I saw that heart, I started to enhance it. Glad that you saw it as well. Not exactly anatomically correct though! Hee hee
