    Quite a lot of book canon in the second half of this vid, not really enough info on the torpedoes in primary canon to fill out a video. If any of you have yet to check out David Mack's Star Trek Destiny Trilogy though, it's totally worth your time, amazing series. :)

      Yup but STO is set in 2409/10 and by then, the Borg had adapted to them. However, they should technically one-shot ships of many other species.

    • @Spacedock
      @Spacedock  7 років тому +87

      It's worth noting that STO technically takes place in a different continuity to Destiny, though they are not irreconcilable and one of the loading screens actually mentions the Aventine so you never know. Of course the actual reason the torpedoes are under-powered is for gameplay balancing purposes, though I expect it would be pretty hilarious if everyone was running around with completely unstoppable torpedoes that ignore shields and one-shot Borg Cubes lol.

      @@Spacedock I don't understand why they didn't just make the torpedoes like a progression like thing. Like instead of Quantum torpedoes acting differently, they would just be more powerful since they are newer technology and if they wanted transphasic torps they could have added a defence that stops them. Just would have made more sense.

    • @SixshotRevan
      @SixshotRevan 7 років тому +34

      My whole family has been asking that question since Voyager's finale aired. The best answer we've come up with is that Janeway has messed with time so much over the series that the Temporal Security Agency couldn't deal with it anymore and gave up. Not a great answer, but there really isn't one for this.

    On an unrelated note, Ezri Dax and the USS Aventine might be my favorite ship/captain/crew dynamic in any Star Trek fiction. The Vesta Class is an incredibly cool ship, Dax makes for a super interesting captain by having thousands of years of experience whilst being simultaneously inexperienced, and pretty much all of the Aventine's bridge crew are really unique and interesting characters. Great storyline from some amazing novels.

    This sounds like a fancy gravimetric torpedo in essence.

  • @jetfowl
    @jetfowl 7 років тому +79

    Eh, the easiest and most destruction weapon to use would be 2-3 tons of water held in one's cargo bay, released at maximum impulse with the Borg Cube behind them.
    The Cube would impact the water at near lightspeed, resulting in a near total matter-to-energy conversion of the water. (it'd be like the Cube hitting a 2-3 ton asteroid at lightspeed).
    The math for 2 tons of water = 230 megatons of energy released instantly.
    Whereas a standard photon torpedo (rated at 18.5 isotons in Star Trek parlance) only releases 90 megatons. Now, the math means that 1 isoton = 5 megatons... therefore the water would equal 44.7 isotons.
    And that's on the upper end of the explosive power of a quantum torpedo.
    But water is a whole lot easier to get ahold of.

    • @josephkugel5099
      @josephkugel5099 7 років тому +23

      Or you could load large tungsten steel rods and do the same thing, I would imagine the destructive power would be greater due to the much denser object being used plus you could load many of these for multiple strikes as apposed to the water one shot.

    • @jetfowl
      @jetfowl 7 років тому +7

      True, it's just a mass to energy conversion.
      I just figured that water would be pretty easy for the replicators to create in large quantities.

    • @Acrosurge
      @Acrosurge 7 років тому +25

      Wouldn't the Borg's navigational deflector push the H2O molecules out of the ship's path? That is what navigational deflectors do, after all; push particles up to the size of small asteroids out of the path of the ship whilst it is moving at relativistic speed. Not sure the steel rods would fare any better. What's to stop the Borg from pushing them out of the way with tractor beams that can easily move masses in excess of 4,500,000 metric tons?

    • @jetfowl
      @jetfowl 7 років тому +7

      Tractor beams, being a form of electromagnetic energy, would be moving only slightly faster than the ships themselves. Factor in the time it would take for the computer to observe the event (ie: register the light reflecting from the rods), process the information, and then energize and activate the tractor beam... and we are talking about hundreds of millionths of a second.
      I highly doubt even the Borg can react that fast.
      As for the deflector dish... if the explosive power of the water is roughly that of a quantum torpedo, you'd have to ask then why Borg cubes don't do the same *TO* quantum torpedoes from the Federation.
      And since they can't (or, at least, it's never been shown in any Star Trek episode)... then it stands to reason that their deflector dish *CAN'T* move that amount of explosive power out of the way.

    • @Acrosurge
      @Acrosurge 7 років тому +9

      Trek tractor beams are stated in canon to have graviton and subspace (magic!) properties (memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Tractor_beam).
      Comparing water to Quantum Torpedoes is a faulty assumption. They could both potential hit with great force, but one is designed to penetrate enemy defenses. The other is made up of molecules that can be more easily deflected than denser matter, such as small asteroids, which 23rd century nav-deflectors can deal with, even while extended past other ships (Mudd's Women, TOS).
      Again, the navigational deflectors are designed to push particles much denser than water from the path of ships moving at relativistic velocities (memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Navigational_deflector). You can ignore this sci-fi magic if you wish, but it is a stated part of the canon. As to why the Borg don't push Quantums, both Photon Torpedoes and Quantum Torpedoes are shielded to prevent them from being easily intercepted by point defense systems (memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Photon_torpedo).

  • @hexagonal_nexul
    @hexagonal_nexul 10 місяців тому +2

    Actually the concept of transphasic technology was later studied upon and installed on all shipwide systems in the 2430s, as well as the eclipse class Enterprise G, having fully functioning transphasic phasers and shielding, as well as torpedoes, but quantum torpedoes remained as the standard armament.

    I always had an issue with the idea of bringing back weapons from the future to win a battle in the past, Think about it for a second, If we are still alive in the future to create these super weapons then we must have somehow won the battle in the past the first time without them. ((BUT)), By bringing them back to the past all we did was allow the Borg to adapt to them many decades sooner than they would have and thus making the Borg even more powerful than they should have been.

Giving a highly sophisticated weapon to even an ally lends a greater chance of the secrecy of the weapons' systems to enemy rivals...notably the Romulans. It's a good thing Admiral Janeway (in an alternate universe) developed this weapon Before the Romulans ever had something of this destructive force or we would all be speaking Romulan.

  • @deathdisclover999

    "But by the time of the Borg attack of the Vega colony in 2409, the weapon's continued usage in Starfleet the Klingon Defence Force, and the newly formed Romulan Republic, had caused the Borg, and many other races, to almost completely adapt to the weapon. While still able to penetrate a ship's shields the torpedo did substancially less damage. Also the modularity of ships being built or retrofitted at this time only allowed for dedacated torpedo launchers to be instaled, along side other torpedo launchers, directed energy weapons, which included cannons as well as the standard beam arrays, and/or mine laying devices."
    The above was written to try to explain why Transphasic torpedos (and by extension transphasic mines) in Star Trek Online don't do alot of damage when compared to other projectile weapons in the game.

    If the blast wave is out of phase it can't affect matter outside of that phazed space. Just like a ghost you can't touch, cannot touch you. It's own explanation contradicts itself. Somehow the energy would have re-phase to hurt the target. Or the torpedo would have to come out of phase at the last possible moment to avoid shields then explode.

    The Next Generation Torpedo is the mini-B5. It stands for mini Black Hole 5 seconds. Upon firing, a "mini black hole" that will last only five seconds is created. There's no actual impact, the "hole" is shot directly in front or near the enemy vessel via computer calculated trajectory. It may last only 5 seconds, but it is an eternity for the receiving vessel. There's no defense against mini-B5 as it is an actual space anomaly - only running away or equipped with the same technology. The cellular structure of anything caught within the mini-B5 is immediately "de-structured" from the cellular level in such way that it will rip a HUGE CHUNK of your vessel right out like a cookie bite - the shot is so tiny as it's the size of a few atoms most enemies have no idea what just happened.

    Transphasic weaponry technology was shared with "elements of the Klingon defense forces". Sharing top secret data on our weapons systems with a former enemy could be problematic. It appears that the TIES between the Klingons and Federation forces became stronger and stronger after the Dominion wars. The Klingon's star forces were fairly depleted after the war with the Dominion and would take decades before they recoup those losses.

    OK... Here is my crazy theory... Transphasic torpedoes are a technology provided to humans by Species 8472 in appreciation for their providing the Nanite Torpedo Intel that caused the species to lose the war with the Borg

    I know this is a bit off topic but I always wondered if the Death Star's super laser would even affect Star Trek or Borg technology? Would even the power to destroy a planet be useful since it is still just a laser and therefore inferior to Phaser type tech?

    • @Spacedock
      @Spacedock  7 років тому +13

      The Death Star's main gun is ludicrously powerful even by Star Trek standards, maybe if there were multiple Borg Ships, the rest of the fleet could adapt after the first one went down, but the first Cube hit wouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell against that kind of power.

    • @Derekloffin
      @Derekloffin 7 років тому +9

      As I recall, although they call it a 'laser', almost nothing called such in Star Wars actually is a laser. Turbo Lasers for instance clearly are shooting a projectile that is far slower than light speed and disobeys many laser properties. The Super Laser is very likely the same as it too doesn't properly conform to actual lasers. A laser may be involved in the weapon in some manner, but they are more consistent with some type of matter projection like a plasma bolt or the like.
      Either way, highly doubtful the ST ships could shrug off a planet destroying one. About the closest equivalent you see is species 8472's ships combining blasts to similarly blow up a planet, and their beams even singularly could easily destroy Borg cubes even after the Borg had prolonged exposure to such and time to adapt.
      All that said, I don't think the Death Star would last long in ST. ST has shown their weapons are VASTLY more accurate, as well as their sensors, so they might actually detect the weakness in the DS's design and be able to exploit such at great range. On top of that, with warp maneuvering they could stay out of the firing arc quite easily. SW has a massive long distance travel speed advantage, but on pretty much all other fronts they're about even or outclassed by ST.

    • @LtCWest
      @LtCWest 7 років тому +1

      Turbo lasers are in fact particle accelerators that shoot bunndles of charged particles, also known as plasma. These actually do work at sub-light speeds mainly because plasma starts to lose cohesion at relativistic speeds.
      Even the Death Stars "Super Laser" was nothing other then a super large and devastating plasma beam cannon.

    • @admiralkoerner2737
      @admiralkoerner2737 7 років тому +5

      The lasers in Star Wars are actually plasma cannons and yes the death Star would be able to destroy one before they adapt and the Death star 2 could blow up a fleet before they adapt. They will still adapt and then the death star is screwed.

    • @simonwinn8757

      Even if the Borg adapt, I don't think the ships have enough power for the shields to resist the shot.

    "Boy, it's sure good we can make these things and shrink-wrap the Voyager in Impregnium in two days with no supplies or shipyard support. Shame it breaks Star Trek to the point they'll have to jump through hoops to explain how anyone can be a threat when we have future technology instantly available that can vaporize any ship in known space with one shot and can make every ship in the fleet invulnerable in days."

      Not exactly. Its more like a bomb laser that explodes on every frequency at the same time. Even if you design a shield to perfect block out some of the light most wavelengths will pass straight through.

    • @Karnage316

      I believe the reason given in the books was because Ezri possessed the memories of Jadzia, they elevated her to Jadzia's rank post-Dominion War and then she basically worked from there. As for it happening during Picard's time as Captain, that was also explained by him rejecting their first advances to promote him to Admiral in the books :
      "Now, don't be rash, Jean-Luc.... You've proven yourself. You've earned this. It's a chance for you to make a real difference."
      "A wise man once told me, 'Don't let them promote you, don't let them transfer you, don't let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you're there, that's where you can make a difference."
      "And what fool told you that?"
      "James T. Kirk."
      (mutters) "There's little point in arguing with that then..."
