  • Welcome to my first impression video for Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries. In this video I will show you the gameplay of a full mission as well as the MechLab where you customize your Battlemechs. Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries is currently in an early access demo phase and will be released on December 10th on the Epic Game Store.
    This game is all about stompy Mech action. You take command of a mercenary company and try to grow your income, salvage Mechs and hire Mechwarriors. At full release the game includes a campaign with a vast storyline.
    The gameplay is split in two different parts. On the one hand you will have to manage your resources, hire new crew members, outfit your Mechs and travel through the Inner Sphere star map. But the action starts as soon as you get into the cockpit of your Battlemech yourself to fulfill contracts on the battlefield to earn moer C-Bills and progress the story.

    To be fair this is how Gauss is supposed to be. They behaved like this in all other MW games. MWO just had to do it differently.

      I was just reading Blood Legacy, and Phelan is doing his Trial of Mechwarrior and Natasha Kerensky says something about it draining a lot of power, so if you fire it and the Large lasers at the same time there's a lag before the lasers fire. That's just lore stuff. In all the other games it was like this. Extremely high projectile speed, no delay.

      Well, it didn't work like that at the beginning, they tried a lot of things to nerf the gauss, the final one was the charge mechanic.

    This is exactly how I played late-game MW4 with a Fafnir, and in most of those missions, you were coming around buildings or over hills right around 600m letting you either take out a leg or a cockpit instantly with good aim. Ridiculously fun. Unfortunately, salvage in MW4 wasn't directly correlated to how much of the enemy mechs you left intact, or I'd have been swimming in mechs and parts!

  • @nymalous3428

    I counted 13 headshot kills. There were actually a few more actual headshots, but those didn't kill the target, so I didn't count those.
    I wouldn't say the gauss rifle is overpowered, it takes up a lot of weight and critical slots, has limited ammo, and is slow to fire. Also, you have to hit your target in order to do any damage (just like with most other weapons), you can't sweep over it a bit like you can with a laser weapon, nor can you lock-on like you can with some missiles. I would say it's balanced. It is meant to be a big powerful weapon and it is.
    (Plus, it is likely to be pretty rare anyway.)

    • @GrimpakTheMook
      @GrimpakTheMook 4 роки тому +3

      Also volatile (goes boom if destroyed, the ammo is inert however), and very heavy. AC/20 range heavy.

    • @EricSwordswinger
      @EricSwordswinger 2 роки тому +6

      Also at the time the game is set, gauss rifles are LosTech, meaning that the very knowledge of _how_ to produce and repair them has been lost and will remain lost until after the rediscovery of the Helm Memory Core, and gauss rifles would not be produced until just a few short years before the Clan Invasion. So replace 'rare' with 'priceless and literally irreplaceable'. Ditto, the 'Mech they're mounted in, nobody has seen a Nightstar since Kerensky's Exodus and their technical specs (and the factory that made them) were casualties of the First Succession War. If that 'Mech gets damaged more than superficially, nobody in the Inner Sphere would know how to fix it, much less be able to get or make parts to fix it with.

I want a madcat and a catapult or atleast I hope they make it in the game unless its barred for lore reasons. :D I hope they can add some ending mission reboarding the transport ship. instead of mission complete the ship lands, you board by walking in the pods, your mech is powered down by you th epilot while you get shown some stats aswell as its rotating around etc.

      Maybe it will be different when I get up to the highest tiers of Assault mechs, but I've been running heavies for a while and no light mechs have come anywhere close to being able to run around me faster than I can turn. They charge in and try and then they find out that my longer-range slow firing big guns are even more potent in CQB when I don't have to put in any effort to aim them and I just blast away at point blank.

    What this really shows other than the awesomesauce that is dual gauss is that its never worth hanging around for extra rewards. Just look at the bonus c-bills, 130000 after killing so many assault mechs. The armour repairs alone will be more than that. Risk vs reward needs balancing, especially since salvaging mechs can be quite random even if you have enough salvage points for the mech you want (and often you'll fall 1 short, like 7 points for a light when max salvage is 6, 13 points for a heavy when max is 12 etc.)

    • @Mohrrunkel
      @Mohrrunkel 4 роки тому

      But railguns function completly differently compared to gaussrifles. The first propels a bullet along a rail, creating explosive heat at the muzzle due to friction , while the latter uses coils to propell the warhead magnetically and therefore creates no friction that could cause a colourful plume. Also both have no visible electic discharge effects, they are completly made up by the entertainment business.

    in the tabletop head hits are rare in that you have to roll 12 on 2d6 so a 1 in 36 chance of hitting the cockpit. The head only has a Max of 9 armor and 3 internal structure meaning 12 points of damage will kill your pilot, and knock the mech out (and make it easy to salvage). For this reason, some weapons are called headhunter weapons in that they will decapitate a mech with one hit. Gauss rifles, AC20s, and clan ERPPCs, any weapon that does more than 12 damage is a single location. There are ways to make headshots easier, such as physical attacks. Punches have a 1 in 6 chance of hitting the cockpit. Also if a mech is half submerged in water, you use the punch hit table. I have a friend who was always able to get headshots when he needed them, he kept being accused of using loaded dice, but they only rolled that way for him.

    • @AidanPryde09

      Or like my First Tabletop Game Ever. Warhawk (Masakari) Mech, the 2 ERPPC 2 Large Pulse Variant. well, my first shot ever at max Range with the Pulse (which dies 10 Damage). I rolled a 12 and then a 3 on the Internals. For those that don't know what that means. If you breach armor and had Damage left on the Shot you roll if you Damages anything on the internal Structure. And a 3 on the Internal Head Structure is the Cockpit. So my first game ever, I killed the Pilot with my first Shot ever! :D

    Good, Gauss Rifles SHOULD be OP. Or rather they should be noticeably better than AC's overall(Other than maybe in some specific circumstances like UC/20 in close range), they're supposed to be the next step in technological evolution and their performance in game should mirror that fact. Just make them harder to get/unlock and balance them against weapons from similar years of introduction(Or reintroduction).

    It's nice to see PPC's that feel like good weapons again. Boating them in MWO just made PGI nerf them in such a sideways manner that running them with ANY support weapons made a mech unusably hot, and even running ONE ppc as a support weapon was unbearably hot. Stupid PPC/GaussPPC jump snipers.

    Most Gauss Rifles are usually depicted in the fluff as being closer to a rail gun than a coil gun. The magnets in most models were not organized in a coil in the barrel, but a series of rows. However, there may be individual differences between model lines that may not have gameplay ramifications like the basic autocannon and burst fire autocannon do.

    • @Kieselmeister
      @Kieselmeister 4 роки тому +1

      I've been consuming battletech/mechwarrior media since 1995, and I have never seen a gauss rifle described as anything but a coil gun in any official product. Both the written fluff and literally EVERY SINGLE IMAGE having a cylindrical coilgun barrel. The way coil guns work is that they have multiple ring shaped electromagnets (aka wire wound "coils") around the barrel that discharge in sequence, and are capable of launching anything ferro-magnetic (like a nickel-iron slug, or improvised ammo like an I-beam as described in the novels).
      A rail gun has two conductive rails that run down the barrel which need to be FLAT to provide maximum contact area for the projectile. (even if the rails twist in a helix to provide a "rifling" effect, the muzzle will still have a rectangular or slot shaped profile.)

    • @Charistoph
      @Charistoph 4 роки тому

      @@Kieselmeister, I have since 1993, and I don't recall it being referenced as a coil gun very often. Not denying the cylindrical barrel, but that doesn't necessarily make them a coil gun. I do remember seeing one break out and you could see square magnets being in a row.
      Again, not all models in the universe are the same, with most shooting spheres (which would not note much of a difference between coil and rail), and others more standard.shaped rounds. In addition, when Yen-Lo-Wang was reequipped to having a gauss rifle, he eventually uses a literal rail with it, which a coil gun would just make an absolute mess of when firing.
      Some of the individual models are noted as being a coil system, such as the Clan Omega 12-Coil and Oriente MagCoil Model M. But not everything is exactly the same in the fluff so you can choose to consider it to be whatever you want, and can even be different between 'Mech lines as a result.
      Mechwarrior 4's, and I think 3's (been a while since I used or seen a Gauss Rifle in it) , showed a coil coming out of the barrel when fired. Mechwarrior 2 shows the ball flying out, and Mechwarrior 5 just shows the short plasma trail of the launch.

      Well let's see, canonically second-highest damage outputs of any weapon on the field and with a range that can keep you out of reach of the first-highest damage output weapon, why would they not be favored by everyone when not being uncanonically nerfed for the sake of "game balance"? There were already counters in place for them, PPC's generate massive amounts of heat and Gauss Rifles have low shots-per-ton-of-ammo counts which means while they shine in early game, late game they're usually out of the fight due to either risk of heat shutdown or being out of ammo. Mind you the AC-20 has the same ammo problem, but since they're a close-range weapon they'd probably not see much use until late game except against flankers or on city maps.
