Hey, could you do a video about mono compability and making a track sound the best it can in all sound systems, with monitors and headphones! thanks for your help
Thanks! :) I try to upload videos every other week. Ideally I should probably upload at least once a week, but I just don't have the time. If I had the chance to go full-time on UA-cam I would upload several times a week, but I don't see that happening any time soon.. :p
I record stereo guitars, using two different speakers. One left and one right. Stereo separation become relative when panning, because if it’s on center it will pan both left and right in that direction. If fully separated, the pan functions as a traditional balance knob. I typically don’t want a mix of those speakers so they must be fully separated. That’s what stereo separation is doing, it’s removing any combination of left and right channels. Triangular panning law comes into play. A good way to experiment is to create a stereo file with two different sounds, one left and one right. Using the panning knob with this stereo file is going to push everything left or right. But that’s not what people typically want. They want to focus on one sound or the other, so they must use stereo separation. This way they will hear one or the other sound when panning.
in cubase i was using the pan knob wrong for years because by default it is set to the balance which is stupid because when i would pan hard right or left i would lose some information on the instruments until i found the combined pan knob which keeps in the information depending on how far i pan left or rigth i would hear everything better so assuming the pan separation in fl is like the combined panner
Thanks for your very clear and concise explanation. I am new to FL studio - I know that most DAWs don't do proper stereo pair panning. For example in studio one there is a dual planner plugin which allows you to pan the left and right separately. Whilst I can see how the separation knob helps how do you pan left and right separately in FL studio?
Hey, could you do a video about mono compability and making a track sound the best it can in all sound systems, with monitors and headphones! thanks for your help
Good afternoon, Firewalk! First of all, I want to thank you for all your content. In your gain staging video , I was wondering about keeping the volume channel for samples at 80%. For example, kick and clap almost clips my master and changing the faders wont help. I'm sorry for asking it again in another video. Also, should I apply gain stage after or before fx?
@Vinicius Soul they should be routed to individual mixer tracks first, so that you can adjust the volume there. Then they will be routed to the master from there.
Add gain knob on all your tracks. Make sure your dbs on the main instruments, leads vocals bass and kick, snare claps are -10 dbs and balanced, then bring them up together with just the gain knobs ( on each instrument ) little by little. Balance them out on low volume then use the gain knobs to control the balance.
Got it, so the channel gain knob should be untouched for samples and it doens't matter if reverb, delays, etc.. comes after or before gain stage? Thank you both for answering, appreciate that!
I think fl should improve a mono aproach like in a pro side !what efect does have on phase and of course tonal changes transforming a st clip to mono ?
Hey! So after using FL Studio for a short while, I feel like I am able to structure a songs melody, chords, bassline etc. The thing I'm really struggling with is choosing the right instruments/plugins when it comes to more Synthy instruments. It makes me feel really stuck and would love for some advice about this. 😅
So I actually had already watched your video on layers and it was very helpful! The thing is, you had pre-prepared presets, so I am clueless on how you actually got such a synth sound, even when they were used on their own.
Great tutorial as always, just a question: How about wav samples that are already in stereo ? does it “add” any stereo if I drag it all the way to the left ? Because I’m irritated by the “original” position, I understand 100% merged and 100 % separated
It doesn't "add" anything that's not already there. It just processes the difference between the left and right channel and amplifies the difference basically. :)
Hey Fire. Awesome videos! A producer-guy told me, that If you use things such as stereo-separation to widen stuff, things might disappear or sound phased if listened to on a mono speaker. What do you think about this and should you even take this into consideration when most ppl listen to music on stereo-speakers anyway?
That's correct. But most leads will be fairly wide to begin with, so there they will always get quieter and less interesting in mono. The important stuff is that your low end remains mono. A question about the stereo knob. Let's say i have double tracked guitars. Panned hard left and right, and then routed to the guitar channel. Is there still a need to turn the knob to full stereo separation?
@@FireWalkMusic It does not work on mono signals. I did some experimentation. It will not add any wideness to a sound source if it's not already in stereo.

It's possible that you have somewhere input only from the left channel. You might for example have a plugin in the mixer that only takes input from the left channel. The output might be stereo, but the input is only from one side. If you pan it to the right BEFORE it goes into said plugin, the plugin won't get any input since it only takes input from the left channel.

Or.. or you can select multiple channels individually with the RightClick..... In case you need to shift them a bit all of them at once you will need to use the playlist to achieve that. in the playlist you arrange them correctly, then you use the Cut tool to cut it exactly like 4bars in the playlists grid. Then you press Ctrl + G... it will group and will create a new Pattern If you've cut it right, the new pattern will have them notes correctly in the piano roll. If after you arranged them right into the playlist and therefore you have an empty spot before the pattern because you had to move it further away and now you can't cut it right in the start then simply put a blank pattern in front of it..fill the gap exactly and then group it (ctrl g) it will merge the empty pattern as well so the notes will be correct on the grid inside the playlist. I hope i could help.
@@sc2692 Many thanks for your guidance. Yeah what I need when selecting all the notes of all channels is that I want to move them all to fit the bars and then ... scale them to a certain ratio. This is because usually, karaoke midi have tempo 120 and they don't match the sheet's bars. So I need to scale them with another tempo. Your suggestion for playlist use is great, as I don't usually use it for midi files.
There are arguably better tools out there for getting awesome stereo effects, however, there's nothing wrong with the one built into the fl mixer. It's very simple processing. It just processes the difference between left and right and increase it. It doesn't really add anything to sweeten things up like some dedicated stereo width plugins. The mono / stereo knob works very well when you just quickly want to make a sound mono, or widen background elements for example. :)

I just want to randomly pan one sound. That shit would be crazy but I cant
seems I turned all my basses to stereo and other stuff to mono, damn
Short format for quick tips, and longer format for more in depth topics. 😀
Thanks :D
Whats the difference between panning in the channel rack (step sequencer) and panning in the mixer?
None. Panning is panning. 😀
That said, it's usually easier to keep track of things when doing all the volume and panning adjustments in the mixer.
Thx dude!
@@TheWarrior221 you're welcome :)
I'm not trusting that widening knob in fl studio tho
There are arguably better tools out there for getting awesome stereo effects, however, there's nothing wrong with the one built into the fl mixer. It's very simple processing. It just processes the difference between left and right and increase it. It doesn't really add anything to sweeten things up like some dedicated stereo width plugins. The mono / stereo knob works very well when you just quickly want to make a sound mono, or widen background elements for example. :)
Thanks :)
This is not your voice right?
We're actually two people. The voice belongs to Steve. He's American and based on feedback we have found that it's just easier for beginners and people from India for example, to understand what he says than someone with a heavy Norwegian accent :)
