This made my heartache, not just for Tom but for all the people who don't know what they're missing. Ragtime is pure joy played like this - something you skip and smile to, that makes you want to stop and stay. Tom plays with that skip and smile in his fingers. And I like the tempo.
You make the world a better place, and I can't thank you enough for that sir. Not everyone spends their time giving the world their gift. The world could use more people like you.
He's gotta spend some of those tips on a bigger tip jar. There was literally a dude that had to run over and stomp down the cash like it was an overflowing trash bin
I love how, at 0:56, the kid has to literally show it down and like, compress the money, because it can't all fit in the tip jar. That just goes to show how much people love Tom. Get well soon buddy!
Tom Brier is this guy. Never met him. Know next to nothing about him. Yet you can't help loving him after watching him play. It's strange, sad thing to feel like you've lost a friend you never met. Best of wishes to you.
+dugroz There was one person wearing a "I'm a UA-camr" shirt who walked by while Tom was playing. Apparently he'd never seen Tom before, though, and just kept walking. During a set at a local craft beer house, one guy walked in wearing a Pikachu vest and seemed quite interested in Tom; another asked Tom to play "your favorite video game song." (Tom said he doesn't have one, but I pointed out that he does sometimes play K.K. Ragtime from memory, so he played that, though did forget one bit at first.)
Wanna make money? Let tom learn all of those nintendo songs that he's sight read in videos before, set up the piano outside of the Nintendo world store in NYC, and have tom play the songs with a bucket next to the piano.
This piece is very Tom. The jumping left hand and somewhat high right fit perfectly with what I've seen of his 'Brierization' pieces on your channel, and explains why he improvises the way he does. Very nice to watch and listen to.
+isambo400 I did record a few more at this outdoor venue. Two more of Tom, only one of which I'll post, I think, as if I recall, he kinda forgot how one piece went (it was another of his own compositions but not one he plays much). The other one of Tom is him playing The Entertainer by Scott Joplin. People here often have clamored to hear him play Joplin solo, which he rarely does.
This is my favorite as well. I don’t know of any other videos and believe me, I’ve looked. Dr Cory Hall aka BachScholar just posted one of him (Hall) playing it. It’s easy to find.
I just spent the last hour watching all of these Tom videos. What a life to catch up on. I saw update videos on the accident. Are you able to link me to the video where the accident is explained? I hope you don’t find this perverse but I really fell in love with this man’s playing and talent. I would like to know more.
+Fab912 Kylan ("foundring" on UA-cam) lives in Santa Cruz and often comes to our bi-monthly meetings in Sutter Creek, also. And of course there's a huge festival in Rancho Cordova in November -- the West Coast Ragtime Festival.
Is Tom able to make a living off of his amazing piano skills? Or is it something he just really enjoys doing in his free time? I would definitely pay a decent amount to see him play! He is a phenomenal pianist.
What sort of dance typically accompanied ragtime music like this? Tom's playing always makes me groove but I feel like there's probably a better way to get down than just bobbing in my chair.
The only one that Tom ever memorized was K.K. Ragtime, which he did play by request of a UA-camr at another public venue. However, as this piano was wheeled away, festival director Kylan deGhetaldi did play Super Mario music on it as they went down the street!
I've listened to this song so many times I can't count it. Absolutely love it. This is probably my favorite video from your channel, hands down. Always love to hear Tom play, especially his own compositions. Also, is it possible to acquire the sheet music to this piece? I would love to play it.
He was in a terrible traffic accident on August 6th and still has not regained full consciousness. But yes, he wrote this piece as a teenager. His more recent compositions are rather more complex, such as this one: ua-cam.com/video/HE0yJ7L_k7s/v-deo.html
In good spirits. He can talk a bit now, and feed himself most of the time. His right hand is still a struggle to use. Last week he was able to stand up for a few seconds.
Hey @Keeper1st just saw your comment under BachScholars Video, where you said he didnt play the Red Roadster Rag often. I was wondering how he could play it so good off the cuff and what an amount of pieces Tom or other great Ragtime player have fully memorized and could just bust out at any given time?
He didn’t memorize pieces too often, but if he could remember how the piece sounded he could play it. I remember times where he had to be reminded of how a piece sounded before he could begin playing, proving the cliche “No, but if you hum a few bars…”
+Vincent M. Johnson Really? Hmm... I don't recognize the title but I'm sure I've heard him play it a few times before! Thanks for the ID. I was going to ask Tom about it tonight but alas there's a big snowstorm in the mountains so I won't make it to the meeting. Do you know what he played when you requested Blue Sahara but misheard you? I'm guessing maybe a "Sahara" foxtrot whose details he added to the Ragtime Compendium...? I did ask him about this over breakfast on the Monday after the festival, but he couldn't remember.
j black If you're so inclined, you could try transcribing it by ear. It's a fairly simple rag, and if you work it out at the piano, you get the added benefit of learning it while transcribing it.
+Daniel Hughes I do have Martin doing the Mister Rogers theme, but I haven't posted it yet. However, there is this: ua-cam.com/video/tFWC86tO6O0/v-deo.html

Hi Keeper1st! Is Tom well enough for me to request a copy of the sheet music for this piece? Or does he need more recovery time before requests of his music can be made?
Tom is still in assisted care. He may always be. Hopefully at some point his family will begin handling orders for his sheet music folios, and maybe selling single sheets of things that aren't in folios, like this one.
That's her index finger as you can tell when she lowers her hand. Why it's extended I could not say, but she's probably just covering her ear because standing right behind the piano would be a rather loud place.
+Spencer Ducharme Of course not. Believe it or not, pianos do exist in nearly every city. We rolled this piano down the street from the Cavalry Episcopal Church a few blocks away.
Ahh. it looked similar to the one in the Ice Cream shop you guys meet in which is why I asked. And don't worry I'm not so blinded by the present that I'm unaware that there is a piano in every city. :P (Also, in hind sight noticed that the piano didn't have a roller after I commented)
+Spencer Ducharme The one in the Ice Cream Emporium has a bland square case -- none of the nice curves of this one (which I think is a bit older). And of course this one isn't covered in signatures!
Very true. I love it how no matter which piano Tom is on it always has that perfect slightly out-of-tune unique upright sound to it though. Do ragtime pianists tune pianos a certain way to get that proper rag-sounding effect?
If Tom recovers from his accident without any serious permanent brain damage, you should be able to get a copy from him. It'll be a while before he's even awake, I suspect.
+wesley william It's because nobody wants to be rude and stand in somebody else's way. So as more people show up to watch, the "bubble" around the piano grows.
Tom brier is literally one of my favourite people ever.
+Evan Reno 4 sure!
On my personal list, he ranks about the same as Adam Savage or Stan Lee. I think he might have to share the first place with Bob Ross tbh..
So when did Tom realize you pushed him onto the sidewalk?
That is hilarious XD
This comment deserves a standing ovation. Bravo.
Haha
Have a nice day, man. You made me laugh a lot.
This really got me laughing🤣
This made my heartache, not just for Tom but for all the people who don't know what they're missing. Ragtime is pure joy played like this - something you skip and smile to, that makes you want to stop and stay. Tom plays with that skip and smile in his fingers. And I like the tempo.

+Mike Orr 2nd that!
I would pay everything I own to hear Tom play again
He's gotta spend some of those tips on a bigger tip jar. There was literally a dude that had to run over and stomp down the cash like it was an overflowing trash bin
Yak Yo! YEAH AFTER 3 DOLLARS!!!
I love how, at 0:56, the kid has to literally show it down and like, compress the money, because it can't all fit in the tip jar. That just goes to show how much people love Tom. Get well soon buddy!
This guy has the ragtime feel ingrained in his hands thoroughly there's nobody else like him.
Tom Brier is this guy. Never met him. Know next to nothing about him. Yet you can't help loving him after watching him play. It's strange, sad thing to feel like you've lost a friend you never met. Best of wishes to you.
the master himself
+Mayer Yedid - If I was walking down the street and saw THE Tom Brier playing a piano, I'd probably drop in way too much money!
+dugroz There was one person wearing a "I'm a UA-camr" shirt who walked by while Tom was playing. Apparently he'd never seen Tom before, though, and just kept walking. During a set at a local craft beer house, one guy walked in wearing a Pikachu vest and seemed quite interested in Tom; another asked Tom to play "your favorite video game song." +dugroz Or just fall over!
+Keeper1st True to form. I remember the first time he tried it.
Actually my bro is way more successful than me he is a computer science worker @ facebook graduated from santa cruz college and is in san fransisco
Wanna make money?
Let tom learn all of those nintendo songs that he's sight read in videos before, set up the piano outside of the Nintendo world store in NYC, and have tom play the songs with a bucket next to the piano.
A bucket wouldn't be enough.
coin generator
Considering how horribly this comment has aged, Nintendo would probably sue him
Always a pleasure to hear Tom play! 😊
*omg I’m going to cry 😢*
Get well soon Tom....
I wish him the best
Seeing this on the street is like meeting angel in person. I wish I was there!
A 90 degrees angle?
Ryroe yes... Tom brier is a right angle.
Yes! This man deserves so much :) His talents are beyond imaginable.......
I hope the best for Tom. Please have an amazing recovery, the world needs more pure spirits like him!!
❤ miss seeing you Tom hope your stronger than ever ❤
All prayers continually for Tom's complete recovery.
His inhuman piano skills only got him 7,000 dollars in tips that day? Must have been a slow day.
I'd give anything to watch Tom live on the street, but im 1000 miles away and Tom is now unable to play again, sadly
love this vid. tom inspires me to keep playing piano. dont ever give up, he seems to say
Moarry poe Yes!
Beautiful... Always nice to hear him play! Makes my day!
You said you had it and you did! Thanks 1st! Always a treat to hear Mr.Briar.
The dream to see Tom one day ..
Wow absolutely beautiful music. Thanks for sharing.
This piece is very Tom. The jumping left hand and somewhat high right fit perfectly with what I've seen of his 'Brierization' pieces on your channel, and explains why he improvises the way he does. Very nice to watch and listen to.
+John DeRouen Well, that's not "Tom-ness" per se; it's just ragtime. Listen to any of the players I feature on my channel.
I need to visit Santa Cruz one day.
Wonderful as always. Thanks for sharing!
Great stuff :) I can only imagine how many tips he'd get for an extended, Brier-ized piece :))
I could watch this for hours, haha
absolutely amusing !!!
this piece is koji kondo level of happy
I need more of him playing in public!
God I hope there are more videos of this.
Also props on the sound quality for a video recorded like this
+isambo400 I did record a few more at this outdoor venue. So weird to see him play in HD
+TheSheepGuy I've been posting HD videos for two years, so one should be used to it by now!
So true
OMG Im in santa cruz right now! I hope I get to see him soon!
+Viet Nguyen The Santa Cruz Ragtime Festival was two weeks ago. He will be playing at the Ice Cream Emporium in Sutter Creek this Saturday night.
I just spent the last hour watching all of these Tom videos. What a life to catch up on. I saw update videos on the accident. Are you able to link me to the video where the accident is explained? I think we're gonna need a bigger cup.
This song is pure fire
Yes
素晴らしい演奏です(^^)🎵
Ah man, I wish I was in the city when this happened, that would've been so great
The festival will be back in town next February! Of course, Tom won't be there, because of his accident this past August.
The guy on His bycicle feels the rythm
So good.
Enjoyed it!
Legendary!
You have an impressive ability to hold a camera very still. Kudos Keeper
It has good stabilization. But I'm not pretty good with keeping fast-moving objects in shot too: ua-cam.com/video/qqbJx5JrEUo/v-deo.html
...i would have loved to have seen this live! This is only around 15 minutes from where I live. Ah well it sounds amazing either way! Awesome!
+Fab912 The festival will happen again next year. And of course if you're that close, you should come to the Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival in August.
Well cool stuff! I'll be sure to stop by either next year or to the Sutter Creek Festival! :D
+Fab912 Kylan ("foundring" on UA-cam) lives in Santa Cruz and often comes to our bi-monthly meetings in Sutter Creek, also. And of course there's a huge festival in Rancho Cordova in November -- the West Coast Ragtime Festival.
I would trade everything I have to be Tom Brier! He is the best :D
With a decade of dedication and self-motivation, you could be well on the way to being as good as him! Nothing is impossible.
Always happens the worst things to the best people.. its actually unfair..
the way that bill was just hanging there like that gave me severe anxiety
Tom brier is that one kid who plays every piano they see
except he doesn't just play the first 2 notes of für elise lol
That's basically me and I've had to deal with some consequences, although there was no sign saying I couldn't play on the piano
Is Tom able to make a living off of his amazing piano skills? Or is it something he just really enjoys doing in his free time? I would definitely pay a decent amount to see him play! He is a phenomenal pianist.
+Kenneth Lett Able to, I'm sure. Desires to, no. He wants to keep music as something fun rather than make it become "work".
+Keeper1st I'm just glad he enjoys what he does, thank you for uploading these videos of Tom!
this guy could easily make couple grand a day
he wrote this?? holyy...
When he was a teenager. His later works are considerably more complex, e.g. ua-cam.com/video/VQiqiiZzofY/v-deo.html
What sort of dance typically accompanied ragtime music like this? Tom's playing always makes me groove but I feel like there's probably a better way to get down than just bobbing in my chair.
Moar
Should have whipped out some of the video game tunes!
The only one that Tom ever memorized was K.K. Ragtime, which he did play by request of a UA-camr at another public venue. However, as this piano was wheeled away, festival director Kylan deGhetaldi did play Super Mario music on it as they went down the street!
That's a great rag! I'd love to hear it more clearly 😁
I've listened to this song so many times I can't count it. Absolutely love it. This is probably my favorite video from your channel, hands down. Always love to hear Tom play, especially his own compositions. Also, is it possible to acquire the sheet music to this piece? I would love to play it.
If Tom recovers from his August 6th accident (signs are good but he's still not fully conscious), you should be able to request a copy from him.
Thanks, and best wishes for Tom's recovery.
Oh dear what happened and didn't know Tom wrote this is brilliant.
He was in a terrible traffic accident on August 6th and still has not regained full consciousness. But yes, he wrote this piece as a teenager. His more recent compositions are rather more complex, such as this one: ua-cam.com/video/HE0yJ7L_k7s/v-deo.html
wait, tom COMPOSED this? fucking hell.
Tom is one of the most prolific composers in ragtime history, with well over 200 compositions to his name.
thanks for replying! how is he doing by the way?
In good spirits. He can talk a bit now, and feed himself most of the time. His right hand is still a struggle to use. Last week he was able to stand up for a few seconds.
How dare you dislike this!! :D
You're gonna need a bigger cup
Some may say that the can has too much money
I believe that there isn't enough money
If I had walked by, knowing tom, I would have dropped a sheet of music on front of him with 2 lines of music and watch him work hid magic for 3 hours
"Red Roadster Rag", a Brier original from a long time ago!
+Vincent M. Johnson Really? Hmm... I don't recognize the title but I'm sure I've heard him play it a few times before! Thanks for the ID. I was going to ask Tom about it tonight but alas there's a big snowstorm in the mountains so I won't make it to the meeting. I did ask him about this over breakfast on the Monday after the festival, but he couldn't remember.
+Keeper1st It might have been "Sonora Rag", another really early original, but I'm not sure.
Is sheet music avialable for this rag? I simply love it, please answer Keeper1st. I need to learn it:)
j black If you're so inclined, you could try transcribing it by ear. It's a fairly simple rag, and if you work it out at the piano, you get the added benefit of learning it while transcribing it.
Nah man I'm not skilled enough in my musical ear to just simply transcribe something like this, however I can read sheet music.
musescore.com/user/19465036/scores/5192919
Wow Tom Brier. You composed this song when you were 15 or 16 years old?
I spent most of that age playing video games, lol. Good job!!
+Spanishin30lessons Of course, there also was this kid... ua-cam.com/video/I-tboYkOFho/v-deo.html
@@Keeper1st right in the self esteem, huh.
Hey I'm absolutely loving these videos all u need is Martin spignazal to play the muppets moving right along and it will be amazing
+Daniel Hughes I do have Martin doing the Mister Rogers theme, but I haven't posted it yet. However, there is this: ua-cam.com/video/tFWC86tO6O0/v-deo.html
+Keeper1st aww brill can't wait they all need to do a piano duel with with Tom Adam Martin and the other guy in the drummer guy
Tom played Cruz...
Tom Cruz...
Tom...
Never mind
Makes me want to play cooking mama lol
See ua-cam.com/video/kQwGQIjERYU/v-deo.html
👏👍
*WHO DISLIKED THIS? I KNOW WHERE YOU TWO LIVE!*
how is Tom?
I wish I could find random pianos around here lol
where would one acquire/purchase this particular Composition of Tom's sheet music?
+Spencer Ducharme I can't seem to send you a message via UA-cam. Send me your email address.
+Keeper1st I PMed you via your about page on youtube with my email adress.
Is that Rowdy Roddy Piper on a bike there?
is this a new camera or something? the sound quality is so much better! love it!
+StefanKeyesGaming Not really. I've been using this camera for a couple years now.
oh wow! just something about the audio seems much more clearer!
thats a good thing by the way. loving it
I'll visit a friend in Santa Cruz in April, will Tom be there?
+Gusch No. The festival was in February. He will be playing at the Oakhurst Ragtime Festival at the end of April, and a couple of concerts with the Raspberry Jam Band in Auburn and San Francisco before that.
+Keeper1st thanks for the quick reply, do you have any kind of schedule when/where he plays exactly?
+Gusch Not really. As well as the bi-monthly meetings in Sutter Creek (including tonight), and monthly meetings in Sacramento, some appearances are listed on the Raspberry Jam Band's web site.
It is possible to get sheet music of this song ?
How and where can I meet this man?
Unfortunately Tom suffered a traumatic brain injury in August of 2016, and now lives in assisted care with limited movement and speech abilities.
Does he have a schedule somewhere? I'm from San Jose and would totally make the trip
+Steven Schiro Not really, but he will be playing tomorrow night (Saturday) at the Ice Cream Emporium in Sutter Creek (we meet there every odd month except November). The following weekend he'll be in Durango, Colorado, for the ragtime festival there. Solo sets at the end of April in the Oakhurst Ragtime Festival, then in June at the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival in Sedalia, Missouri. More appearances are noted on the Raspberry Jam Band web page, www.raspberryjamband.com
HOW CAN I OBTAIN THE SHEET MUSIC FOR THIS?!?!?!? :O
I would be seriously interested in using this piece for my exam if I could buy the sheet music :O
How much did he get?
hi
I want to be him. period.
Did that lady have a medium format film camera??
Hi Keeper1st! Is Tom well enough for me to request a copy of the sheet music for this piece? Or does he need more recovery time before requests of his music can be made?
Tom is still in assisted care. He may always be. Hopefully at some point his family will begin handling orders for his sheet music folios, and maybe selling single sheets of things that aren't in folios, like this one.
Somewhat unrelated, but does Tom (or whoever holds the rights) plan to release the sheet music for Carmine?
+Crake He has produced a companion sheet music folio to the "Constellations" album, which contains that piece.
+Keeper1st Thanks for the reply, I got the album over iTunes. I would have ordered physical if I knew.
is there any more footage of him playing here besides the vid of him playing the entertainer?
I think Kylan deGhetaldi and Tom Clemans may have posted a few -- possibly in compilation videos from the festival.
why does the girl flip him off at 2:31 ??
That's her index finger as you can tell when she lowers her hand. Why it's extended I could not say, but she's probably just covering her ear because standing right behind the piano would be a rather loud place.
did you guys haul that piano all the way from sutter creek?
+Spencer Ducharme It's just an old piano. Most do prefer to play on a nicely regulated and tuned grand, actually.
is the sheet music available for this?
If Tom recovers from his accident without any serious permanent brain damage, you should be able to get a copy from him. It'll be a while before he's even awake, I suspect.
+Keeper1st i hope the best for him.
His brother said today that the doctors are anticipating that he should be waking up within the next day or so.
+Philippe Levesque i heard
There's 420 likes, it would be a shame if someone......liked it again mwahahah
That guy on the bike is about ready to go for that cup.
jk :P
im confused y people stand so far away. if i were there i would be 3 feet away. lol
idek what i just said
+wesley william It's because nobody wants to be rude and stand in somebody else's way. So as more people show up to watch, the "bubble" around the piano grows.
lol
this could be a social experiment

The master of Ragtime himself!
