It's crazy how Michael Richards is absolutely nothing like Kramer. Makes you realize how brilliant his performance was.

@@makasete30 I have compassion for those that make honest mistakes. He showed that he's an actual racist. For that I have no compassion. No matter how angry I'd ever get with anyone I'd never bring race in to the equation. Think about this: If someone murders another in the heat of an emotional argument, the fact that they had the ability to murder someone shows their lack of character. That's also something I don't forgive.
Everyone makes mistakes and I've personally made quite a few but I'd never, NEVER, cross certain lines and it's not because I can restrain myself, it's because I don't have to... Some things aren't a part of who I am and the same goes for my family and friends, no matter how angry we get.

I’m moved by Michael’s sincerity in his reflection of regret and the residual pain that that incident resulted in. I was surprised by such a personal experience being shared on camera. Maybe it was cathartic in some way. Seinfeld demonstrates sincere and loyal friendship.
You can see by the look in his eyes, he looks terrified. I couldn't figure out why at first, because I figured there was no way they were going to talk about "the incident", but nope, that's what I was seeing. He knew he was going to bring it up and was positively freaking.
Yeah, Michael seems like a sincere guy. Time to set the baggage down, as Jerry says. Too bad the haters can't let it go, as well.
Yea, it was a messed up situation. But we all lash out sometimes to one degree or another and make mistakes and say things we regret. Knowing even a small percent of what that is like for oneself, just escalate 10 fold just because your a known actor/artist or comedian, whatever. Put the bag down Michael.

A friend like Jerry, who sticks with you in the worst of times, when you're rock bottom and everyone is cursing your name... is a 1 in a million friend.
I suppose there's some truth in that, but really, Jerry has enough money ( and everything else in life) to not have to really care if people get upset with him. He's actually pretty disdainful about most people, anyway.

You gotta have respect for Jerry. I never really liked him as a comedian but seeing how he has the quality to stand by a friend after so long when he doesn't need to, makes me respect him as a human being.

I think this comment should be at the top. Especially for all the judgmental people saying this or that. In the end, we all make mistakes. We all fall, and most of us can do it quietly while we pick ourselves back up. Must be diffrent and difficult when you have a magnifying glass on you and every one knows who you are. I really don't think Mr. Richards is racist at all. He lashed out in anger and said something he regrets saying. We all have been there in one way or another.

Yet I was terribly angry in very few occasions as well. I yelled really bad stuff. Insults that were meant to hit maximally hard. 🙈 I was like a hurt animal, furious, sad and blind. If you judge me by these - maybe - 5 days of 36 years on this planet, I'm probably in the top 20 of worst people ever. 😄

Sometimes we try to say the most painful thing to someone who has caused us pain to try and get under their skin, and of course later on, we regret it. Sometimes instantly lol. We are human ♥️ we make mistakes and we either learn from them or repeat them until we do.

You can see Jerry’s worry and compassion for his friend in this clip. Michael’s remorse and humility is also very clear. In a world when nobody seems to take responsibility for their mistakes, this clip is pretty profound. Much respect to both of these rich men for being human. Ain’t none of us perfect. RIP Mr. Bookman.
You also saw it when Jerry showed up in Letterman right after it happened specifically to defend him. He could have taken flak for that but he didn’t care.

The fact that he reflects on his misstep all those years ago with humility and shame proves that he deserves some forgiveness. These guys made me laugh through some challenging, difficult times and for that, I'll always be grateful!!

@@MeadeJ67 A mistake is not seeing a stop sign behind a tree. The N word doesn't just magically come out if it's not already in you. From a black person who has befriended people of other races, I know how it is as soon as they get angry, out pops the N word. It some people's go-to.

Michael Richards slipped up, no doubt, but the fact none of you have attacked the people who caused the whole situation speaks volumes of this ultra woke hyper-fearful time in which we live.
I believe that the 'woke' approach would be to acknowledge the role played by trouble makers to give the situation some context. Being asked to play the same character over and over again when you're trying to move on creatively probably also made him frustrated.
My wife and I still watch Seinfeld reruns, they never get old!

Hollywood is sadly shorthanded on actors who DON'T think they're the greatest. Michael was absolutely perfect for that role but didn't feel he was very funny, and has a hard time accepting genuine praise. For me it's impossible to imagine anyone else playing that part. Impossible.

As far as his Kramer role goes, he nailed every single second he was on camera and in my opinion stole the show...without fail. There was not ONE episode where I thought he was dialing it in, he was always giving it 1000% and it came through the screen.

@@256JustinianI agree about George but having to do that much body comedy requires a whole other level. He had line delivery PLUS body language...he was one of the few characters where you could say "Yes, I can see Kramer sleeping with a beautiful woman", but George was always a stretch.

One of Seinfeld's important interviews. I hope it helps to restore Richards emotionally and the confidence in his talent, and helps to generate an audience for what he does.
To sum it up, we've forgiven him and moved on. HE. NEEDS. TO. DO. THE. SAME. ALREADY! Life is too damn short. (And I wish he'd make some type of comeback!).

I’ve been watching Seinfeld again because it’s on Netflix, and honestly, it’s just the greatest sitcom. It’s perfect. The characters. The setting. Everything. Every episode has its charm.

It was good advice! That night he imploded because he’s ego was so bloated and fragile that he couldn’t take any criticism. In this episode he said to Jerry “We’re not normal people” for being famous so his ego still needs work. I don’t doubt his remorse but the heart never lies so I was glad Jerry taught him the selfless vs selfish perspective

Cosmo Kramer is a legendary character, and Michael is legendary for bringing him to life. I wish him well and thank him for continuing to make me laugh.
If you have not seen it - UHF has a Michael Richards character named Stanley who will make you smile for sure.
I met Michael Richards when he used to come into a restaurant I worked in right next to the studio where they shot the Seinfeld series, he said he "came for the soup". He always sat at the end of the bar right next to the waiter-station and one time a few people approached him and you could tell he was a little uncomfortable, so I asked them to allow him to enjoy his meal in peace; he quietly thanked me. He was, and is, clearly a good soul and I'd love to see him work again, he's such a unique talent. May it be so. Cheers.

Well, to be fair, Jerry HAD to both disagree with Michael's behavior AND support him, because Jerry was trying to promote the DVD release of the show. Not to mention Michael could had done irreparable damage to the reputation and feeling about the show in perpetuity. Michael REALLY f***ed up. Jerry responded in the only ways he could have. He played both sides. To be honest, Michael didn't deserve it. What Mike did was totally over the top and uncalled for.

Only thing that can take away some of the damage is if he gets active against racism or gets some diagnosis like Border line or heavy Bi-polar or something similar. But he never really shown any regret for what he said. He only regret that he did say it because he think it was unfair to him. That he was a victim that night.
None of us are perfect. But he let out a special kind of demon that night..
It’s sad that a guy who spent decades of his life honing his craft, could be derailed by these people. If anything, they should’ve apologized to Michael, and the civilized paying audience, for being disruptively feral.

As a black man from NY who grew up watching Seinfield it was really nice to see him own up to his mistake. I loved the show and I think Kramer was such an essential character. But the incident really tore me up because I wanted to be a fan of Kramer but I couldnt anymore.
People make mistakes. I understand that. All I will say is if you have hate in your heart its already worse than any punishment or blowback you could receive from something like that. If you dispell that from your heart than people can learn to forgive and laugh with you again. And I know he has a good heart because he's brought so much laughter to so many people and he is sitting here bringing up this sore topic on his own. I hope he can forgive himself and I hope I can laugh with Kramer again.

Im honestly curious if its possible for someone in Michael Richards position to make a comeback. Im sure he could, but what Im not so sure about is if we live at a time where mainstream society will let him. I hope so, and not just for his sake. People are more complicated then it seems currently popular to let them be I think. allowing people to acknowledhe their shortcomings and move on from them seems totally reasonable to me though.
@dblockbass so well said. I think we all died a little inside when that happened. Everyone (within reason) should be given a second chance. I've just started watching and enjoying Seinfeld again. There were many racial and religious jokes on that show, but you always got a sense that a joke was a joke, and none of them were racist.

You know what. Even though what he said was bad, he is genuinely sorry about what happened. We have to learn how to love and forgive others. He’s carried that torment internally for years after the fact. When it happened I wasn’t even a fan or watched the show, but now I’m on season 7. And he’s one of the best characters on there.

Michael Richards is a quality funny man who wanted perfection at Seinfeld. If you watch the blooper reel you can see it was maddening him sometimes that himself and the rest of the cast were making mistakes and continuously laughing, especially Julia Louis Dreyfus. Jason Alexander was the backbone of the acting and Michael Richards was the backbone of the comedy in my opinion. The four main characters played off each other so well. But I may also add that without Larry David's comedic writing it wouldn't have made it to season 2. Legendary show full stop.

This was a beautiful interview. A truly contrite Michael Richards whos been ruined for one mistake. Kudos to Jerry Seinfeld for his commitment to friendship.
It wasn't just the one mistake. Michael's first mistake was trying to start a stand-up comedy career. He was never known as a stand-up and he wasn't very good at it. There are quite a few stories of him bombing on stage before that, although he didn't use racial epithets those times. He's a great comedic actor but for whatever reason after Seinfeld ended he didn't want to do that anymore. Personally, I think Michael's career is a cautionary tale of what happens when you try too hard to be something you're not.

'ruined for one mistake' is a pretty tame way of saying he pointed at a black dude and shouted "he's a n****r" over and over and over again. the fact that that is how he reacts when a black person upsets him means there is something deeper going on than just "making a mistake" one time. There needs to be a middle ground between completely downplaying what he did and completely writing him off as inhuman and unredeemable.

I clicked on this with no idea what to expect, and got this wonderful, poignant, shared moment between two beloved titans of comedy, one of whom had an off moment during a stand-up set and made a bad choice, which to this day casts a long shadow on an otherwise brilliant career making people laugh. This conversation gave me a little more insight into that moment, and into what the aftermath has been like for Mr. Richards. I agree with Mr. Seinfeld that it would be nice if Mr. Richards could get back onto the horse which threw him and do another set somewhere, but it's hard to come back from public perception his bad choice created that night. Even still, Mr. Richards will always be revered for his excellent work on "Fridays" and "Seinfeld". Mr. Seinfeld's argument about the process during "Seinfeld"s run that "we're all trying to get to the same island. It doesn't matter how we're each getting there" about Mr. Richards' laborious process was a revelation as well.

It's interesting to hear a mix of gentleness, humility, and constant self reflection in Michael's voice. It's like he had been riding the power of words to make other laugh but that one night he realized how badly words can harm and has been wary of that power ever since.

i come back to this video often. It captures the spirit of "humble contrition" that is difficult to be in but I think keeps us human. Love seeing the bond here between them as well - we all need this during our worst moments.

Honestly one of if not the best interview Jerry did on this series. If you watch the full episode this is part of a quiet and wonderfully poignant moment they share. They clearly know each other so well after so many years working together. Whatever one’s opinion of Richards’ racist blow out that basically ended his career I still think he’s absolutely one of the funniest comedic actors ever. Cosmo Kramer remains easily the top 3 sitcom characters ever if not #1. Richards shows numerous glimmers of his gifts in this episode. Personally I do hope the world and the industry can forgive him. Few of us are spotless nor blameless but then not all of us get caught in some wild racist rant. I hope he can find his way back still somehow.

I have never seen the full Michael clip. Idk what the rant was about. I get the feeling that he was trying to use the word ironically to hecklers that called out his stand-up... But it went from jest, to hurtful and that's the difference. I do believe he was trying to defend a defenseless act that he shouldn't have.
I think he realizes this now... But does that mean he treats people of a different race with preconceived notions, or that he believes he's better by race... I don't think so... I honestly believe this was a hateful moment that he should feel bad about, but i do truly feel the hate was him trying to defend a bad act to the point of desperation and using that word.. i don't believe he actually treats people differently by race or sees them that way.
I've noticed that people backed in corners make stupid arguments to try and win, with no rationality. I also believe in forgiveness and finding a way to peace. If he treats people differently by race, or indeed was showing his true colors.. then by all means. Shun him or whatever.
But i also feel that backs people into corners where, they too, will echo how they're not forgiven or accepted and may make the problem worse. If someone has preconceived notions based on race, we should be correcting those people, not allow them to be mean to others and stand up for the victims of racism when they get knocked down. But if we just shun and end convo. It's only going to grow those types of racist people and reinforce bad and wrong ideas.
Either way.. from what i saw... this guy was defending an act and used racism to try and win some point and i don't think he made it...

That look on Jerry's face when he brought "it" up. You realize they're like any two friends, they don't necessarily known when they'll be able to talk about the Big Thing, because as friends you often may avoid such conversations, and Jerry knows this is a rare chance.

I've loved Michael Richards from the first moment I saw him on Fridays as part of the cast. Absolutely manic, brilliant, fearless and hilarious.
Such a deep convo, comedians hide those emotions so well. Just started the Seinfeld series with my 18yo son and loving it again!

I would still LOVE a reunion episode of them getting out of jail and coming back to the world now as it so different from what it use to be when they "went in". They could even do a short run of a few episodes similar to Dexter. There is such a massive fanbase that I think it would blow the ratings out of the water. They all look great for their ages and as a long time seinfeld fan I can say I will always keep the hope up.

Michael Richards is worth about $30 million, so he should be able to love comfortably. One mistake shouldn’t ruin a man forever. Jason Alexander is worth about $50 million. That said, Jerry and Larry are worth hundreds of millions.
I hope Michael manages to make a comeback some day, especially with how popular Seinfeld has recently been on Netflix, but more importantly I hope he understands what he did wrong and truly has changed. I think he definitely has, and has spent enough time out of the public eye that a re-emergence of him would be possible. After all, what's the point of calling someone out for their wrongdoings if not to eventually give them the opportunity to change and learn from their mistakes? I guess if he ever does make a comeback and is welcomed and forgiven for his incident which happened years ago now, it would give me a bit more hope in the world.

This is well said. Not being able to give Michael a chance afterward and continuing to call him a racist 10 years after is akin to canceling people online. Whoever firmly believes he's still racist amuse me. Most of the time they seem to be people that won't accept the concept that others have the potential to understand their wrong-doings, change, and reenter society. It's been more than 10 years, and Michael hasn't said anything such as his tirade. He mentions regretting it in the video, but not like he's trying to telegraph it. I believe that this is just one of the small things that show how earnest he is. Each time he's admitted he was in the wrong. I've seen a few others mention him going onto a show to publically apologize, and many other instances if you find them. When he experienced his reality check, Michael understood what he did was wrong, and I'm sure has been working on himself ever since then. If he wasn't, we would probably know.
How he acts now from watching the video reminds me of how an old friend of mine acted. He was on a troubled path, and broke down for a final time, letting a lot of terrible things out. He apologized and knew that he had to make things right. Leaving things as is would show the character that he was not. He didn't want to hurt anybody, and accidents happen. Accidents can become disasters. From whatever scale it may be, it's up to who caused it to decide how things go next before others do it for them. In the end, my friend had to move. By then though, he had completely flipped around the life he had fallen into. There were no hard feelings, and people remembered him not for how he acted then, but for what he did after.
All I can say is thank you to these two men, Jerry and Michael, along with Julia and Jason. The four of them have "saved" my life with laughter more times than I can count. I just finished reading Michaels Book 15 minutes ago. Wow, what a revelation, and what a remarkable life journey he has explored and lived. I am so happy he is mostly at peace with himself now. Giddyup !
Damn this makes me choke up. I've been a Michael Richards fan since the show Fridays. When Jerry tells him about " carrying the bag long enough. It's time to put it down. " Richard's look at him just gets me everytime. He deserves another chance.
I think Seinfeld is a person whose incredibly sensitive but plays it off like he’s detached and sardonic because it worked for his career. But here he’s being vulnerable seeing his close friend be vulnerable, and he offers a hand of wisdom to someone whose clearly carrying baggage more than he needs to, and it’s just really endearing to watch.
You appreciate both men more because of this clip.

I'm a 90's kid and probably would have streamed seinfeld during covid or something if not for this incident. Im sure im not the only one who shares this sentiment. Yes he brought joy to millions at the time but I think this situation pushed away a lot of potential new viewers.

That’s really a special moment for Michael to be willing to open in front of cameras and Jerry the way he did. There were probably countless conversations behind scenes that we’ll never know about, but so many people have done far worse things to people (physically or mentally/emotionally), and for Michael to not allow himself to move forward is sad for the world of comedy. He’s a tremendous talent, and if he’s still feels the urge to want to write and perform comedy he should. I don’t think he realizes the amount of support he’d receive.
Really loved this video. I 've always thought the MIchael was a little like me: uncomfortable in his own skin. But he was the hardest working man on Seinfeld because he had to play a character so different from his own. And it's good to see Jerry maintain connections and show support after all the controversy.
