My number one tip is...When you get out of bed, do your morning stuff, then get dressed. Even if you're just going to lay down again. Living in pajamas is freaking depressing, IMO.
That’s a good idea but I can’t imagine ever doing that. I get dressed 5 min before leaving the house and as soon as I get home my comfy clothes go back on. I don’t want to dirty or wear out my good clothes. I guess that’s not normal. lol but I have huge dogs that shed and drool and they will ruin all my clothes.
@@ccap3211 For me, comfy clothes are jeans and a t-shirt. I don't care how gloomy it is outside, I always feel like if I've got jeans and a t on, I'm ready to stay in or go out.
When I moved out, I waited waaay too long to have people over. Don't do that! I kept putting it off because the place wasn't "ready" yet but you will be surprised what a few candles, lovely drinks in cute glasses, and the laughter of your friends will do for your space. And the feeling lingers!
@@JojoboxVlogs Verse to those who think and see human life on earth as daily mating/dating: 1 Corinthians Chapter 7 32 But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord: 33 But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife. 34 There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband. 35 And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction. Know it: LOVE = SPIRIT, LUST = CARNAL. What do we want? - being daily lusted after and to keep living ourselves and keeping everyone else also in the sin of fornication? Or do we want and ask for to BE LOVED ON DAILY BASES? We are all commanded to LOVE one another, not lust after one another neither to abuse one another. 1 John 4:7 - Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 1 John 4:20 - If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? John 15:13 - Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John 14:15 - If ye love me, keep my commandments. 1 John 4:8 - He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 1 John 4:18 - There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 1 John 3:18 - My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. Proverbs 10:12 - Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins. Matthew 6:24 - No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Romans 5:8 - But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Ephesians 4:2 - With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; 1 John 4:10 - Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. BIBLE speaks of LOVE, not of lust. In our brokenness have we transformed LOVE into lust and live daily confused, broken, hurt, blind, deaf, proud = all this is our doing, GOD is not to blame, we are. Souls, remember: GHOSTS = DEMONS. you and your loved ones ain´t demons. You and your loved ones are ADAM = mankind, created in the image of GOD. you and your loved ones stay not around to "ghost", we return back to dust and back to GOD. Genesis 5:2 Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. Ecclesiastes 12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
I am a huge fan of “little surprises” around the house-I’ve been doing this since I was a kid. Tiny objects loaded with calming/happy memories go into spaces I visit most often, like the space over light switches, inside closet doors, inside well-trafficked kitchen cupboards. I always smilie when guests open a cupboard to get a tea mug and momentarily puzzle over a little framed drawing or a silly tiny toy. I tuck small cherished objects in dresser drawers-so good to “discover” when I’m rushing around in the morning. I have struggled with anxiety throughout my life and I swear, these bits of self-therapy have saved my life.
I’ve been doing this for year now too, I put photos inside the kitchen and bathroom cabinets so you see them only when you open them and it doesn’t ’clutter’ the look of the room.
When I'm going through a depressive episode, I usually can't find the motivation to cook for myself, so I stock up on the healthiest/tastiest frozen meals I can find. After they're done microwaving, I make an effort to plate them nicely, get a cute napkin, and throw on a quick garnish, like some fresh cilantro/basil, or toasted sesame seeds. Really elevates the depression meal!
I'm retired from Montessori teaching and have found UA-cam to help combat sadness. You and Caroline Winkler have so much wisdom even though you're young. I agree with the thrifting advice and playing in your home. I move things around all the time. My tiny condo doesn't have an outdoor space so I surround myself with plants which is better than having a pet. They are something to care for without having to worry about vet bills.😉 I struggle with finding good art. Art combats sadness. I really like your art work. You have great taste and seem like an old soul. This 70+ yr. old viewer appreciates your content.
Me too .. 63, Indian, from Mumbai, and love Caroline and Paige. I rearrange stuff, completely move furniture, change cushions , keep “new” books out, “new” decor items around a particular theme in specific places, out. And then reorganise them back in storage which itself takes me back to rummage through fond objects from old times and I love that! And yes I love my plants … they love me back!
I’m thankful to my Mom for talking about and experiencing rain in a very positive light. So now when it rains I’m happy, and I soak it in. I think it has to do with living in CA, because we don’t get a ton of rain. When it would rain as a kid she praised it. sometimes when it would start raining at 10 or 11:00 at night she would drag me from bed to dance or go for a walk in the rain. And she was excited that “the earth is getting fed” lol such a hippy. But anyone that’s sad when it rains, maybe think about it differently and channel a random strangers energy: my mom. Haha
The combination of you being vulnerable, the design tips and inspiration and just the overall warm atmosphere of this video was spot on. It felt like a friend's hug. I will keep it in mind for future sad days. Thank you 🕯️
I would add another thing: have some nice clothes you only wear inside your home. I have some lounge pants, a great sweater, a housecoat I love..houseclothes that match the vibe inside. I agree about having someone come over and help. I'm doing a suprise kitchen refresh for my sibling on vacay, painted, fixed some issues, thrifted some decor..but one thing I noticed were little annoyances that she has become accustomed to, like the screen door that whacks me when I enter. I adjusted the tension so it slow closes now. Repositioning things so they are ergonomic and flow nicely in the kitchen workspace, and so on. I'm planning on painting my apt and redoing stuff based on what I did for my sis. Its a win-win.
Yes! On the note of house only clothes, having a set or two of matching PJs has upped my self esteem. I feel so confident and put together going to bed and waking up in cute clothes made for sleeping. New level of "put togetherness" unlocked!
@@lightworks3172 I work from home, and especially when it's cold in winter, it's hard to have the motivation to put on a whole outfit. But i bought some fancy sweat suits from levis that are nice and weighty, and it makes me feel more put together and cozy!
I’ve suffered from depression and debilitating anxiety since my preteen years. My teenage daughter is going through the same thing now. My advice to her is to layer on the self care. Even if drinking a cup of herbal tea only makes you feel better by a fraction of a percent that’s still something. If you keep your space clean, keep yourself clean, stay caught up on homework, light candles, do your nails etc those are all little things but when you layer them and do them all you actually start to feel better. Even if it’s only a little bit better that’s still worth something. Even if you’re so sad that you just know nothing will work- still do it! Just go through the motions if you have to. I told my daughter that the reason I go through candles so fast is that I’m naturally sad too! I just refuse to give into the sadness. I fight it all day every day. Coming from someone older and at the risk of sounding like “a boomer” I think that overall, your generation is lacking when it comes to understanding self care and it is so important.
when my roommates all moved out at the end of a school semester but i was staying through summer I bought a GIANT teddy bear. and i put her on a chair in the dining room. it got a little weird (she has a name and backstory, i dressed her up sometimes - i even gave her a piercing lol) but she kept me from getting too lonely
As I was watching, I saw my empty vases, so paused and wandered my backyard snipping foliage from garden and herb garden. Free foliage filling vases puts a smile on my face 😃 Thanks Paige! Excellent theme 👌
lol was bracing for a betterhelp add the whole time. so glad it went a different direction. thank you for being vulnerable AND a genius. much love paige
Love this! My tip is that for every project that you HAVE to do around your home (e.g. plumbing repairs, or even washing the dishes in the sink), also do something you WANT to do that will affect your comfort in the house (e.g. paint the bathroom, swap out the window blinds, etc.). I bought a house a couple of years ago that needs a lot of work. For the two years I was constantly doing necessary projects, but in a lot of ways it still didn't feel like home. I've been a lot happier working more aesthetic projects into my schedule along with the necessary ones!
Such a great video! Recently I’ve been diagnosed with a serious illness. Curating my house and garden has been quite comforting to me. I also treat myself well- fancy tea served in a beautiful tea cup. A whole spa production in the bathtub. Walk my 2 pups. Soothing music, a good meal. Clean p.j.s and fresh sheets…
There is nothing like fresh sheets! All these ideas are great of course but fresh sheets are the best. I live in a condo but if I could I would even hang my sheets outdoors to dry for that fresh air smell!!! Wishing you all the best with your health
Actually watched my mum do it my entire childhood: re-arrange the whole space/house, just by moving all the furniture and try different things. Just realised thanks to your video how deeply intentional she was ! We would have to help her lift the heavy things, the noise it made, like you knew something exciting was going on from afar; loving the promising mess before she made the house become our home again. And BIM a new perspective ! Still use the same trick when I want things to change or improve…that and doing something to my hair 😂 Thanks a lot and greetings from France where you are much loved
Huge tip: buy a ten thousand lumens SAD lamp. A Natl Institute of Health study says it works as well or better than antidepressants on not just Seasonal Affective Disorder but also unipolar depression! Put it on your kitchen table. Enjoy a half hour of that sunshine lamp with your morning tea or coffee or hot choclate. So cheering! Thanks Paige. Great cozy video.
I'm painting each room a different color. This has made a huge difference! Because, when I first moved in, the entire house had been painted something called " agreeable gray"! Each room a new color really helped me.
YES! I love that each space has its own vibe. Painting my room a soft blue has been a game changer. I also rock a pink bathroom which I know is a Paige no no but it makes me smile everytime 😊
I have 4 bedrooms home and each bedroom has its own accent paint colour. My bedroom is a deep cherry red, my son's room is an indigo blue, guest bedroom is a dark velvet green and the spare bedroom has a buttery yellow accent wall. Different vibe in each room.
I'm probably moving to Chicago this fall. I've never lived in a big city and one of the things I'm most excited for is *real* thrift shops that have things I can actually see decorating my home with. Occasionally I've found some nice things in the small-town thrift shops I've lived near but overwhelmingly they just seem to have overpriced junk. I loved this video and the ideas within, especially the validation that it's ok for me to burn my candles all day long (for some reason I always feel guilty doing this).
9:58 !! Oh my gosh! 10,000 Maniacs is my dad's band! He founded it in like, 1983 and plays the bass. I love this so much. And so does he. These Are Days does a lot for many people - me included. Thank you for sharing this!
I SO agree!! I had ppd after my first baby was born. My brother came over and painted one wall in a brilliant color, and it sort of woke me up again, to who I really was! ❤ Thanks for this!
Paige, Sometimes I think you are a psychic... I have just started back on my depression meds and am glad I did. I looked around my house and realized it was a reflection of my depressed self. So, I am meeting new friends, lighting up my house for Mardi Gras 🎉 and getting into k-dramas and k-pop at almost 70. I love BTS. 💜 They are upbeat, funny and k-dramas have made me believe in love again. It feels good! Thanks Paige.
Cleaning, organizing and decorating is such a good way to show gratitude and be mindful about the things you own. It can show that you're aware of your surroundings, that everything is meant to be there, even if it's as simple as cleaning the mirror or putting soap into a nicer dispenser. It's a simple way to accomplish something, and if you do it correctly, you make your home feel orderly and purposeful, and you get rid of things that are getting in the way, which is a win-win. If your environment is cared for, then you can be cared for
this was so nice. thank you. one thing i like to do when my depression is kicking my arse is to give my indoor plants some tender loving care. water them, wipe down their leaves, trim off any dead bits. it makes for a nicer surroundings but also mimics the kind of care i want to give myself.
Paige, I completely understand the situational depression from a breakup. Been through that before in the past and it’s rough. I wanted to let you know I paused the video a few times to make my bed and light a candle. I also turned on my salt lamp that I almost never use. My dad gave it to me a few years ago, and I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve used it.
I took a film camera home for the holidays and took photos of everyone who I loved. I captured hugs between family members, my siblings giving me funny faces, etc. I keep those photos in a gallery on rotate on my phone to help me feel closer to them when I am living abroad. But recently I also found some colourful frames and printed off those photos and hung them in my highest traffic areas around my home. I might even add some quotes or funny things they have said to go along with. It makes me feel surrounded by love, and helps me feel grateful for them every day, especially when I feel extremely lonely living in a new city. Thank you for this video! A lot of great ideas I also use, and some new ones as well.
Thank you thank you thank you. As someone with bipolar type 2 (cyclical depression) and a family of mental health deniers, your family is what I adore my future chosen family to be. I tend to do some of these things naturally, like closing/opening up shop (love that name) and also closing shop when its too gloomy out so I can turn on the lamps and be warm. But some of these are great tips that make SO much sense but I’ve never thought or maybe have forgotten. It breaks my heart to hear that you couldn’t remember your travels because I understand that too much. To anyone reading this, I know its hard when you’re in the thick of it to do all the things you should/want to do, so focus on the very next thing only. Just woke up? Focus only on getting up. After that, you can focus on walking to your windows and opening the blinds. Etc etc. you got this ❤
Emely, THANK YOU! Absolutely zero offense meant to any other commenter, but I am: 1. A recovering heroin addict (clean almost 8 years! ) ; 2. Severely ADHD ; 3. diagnosed MDD (major depressive disorder); 4. diagnosed GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) - and medicated for all of the above! Reading some of the comments, it's very clear that many people have, fortunately, never experienced depression. The kind where you struggle to get out of bed, are basically paralyzed in so many ways. It was just very nice to read your comment. Clearly, you've been through it, and you make me feel a little less alone. I typically am quite well, I consider myself a minimalist, I have a little suburban micro homestead, have many hobbies I love, including being a Mom, but for the past week or so, I've been going downhill, and now I'm in the thick of it again. Dishes need to be done, dining room table is a hot mess, and I just want to cry. It sucks having such imbalances sometimes. ❤
Spending like 5-10 mins doing some basic reset tasks before you go to sleep, like folding up any blankets on the couch, either getting the dishes done or at least containing them to a pile, taking obvious things back to where they go so when you wake up things are a little tidier can really help. I have SAD and finding ways to decorate for each season helps too
It seems creative individuals are more susceptible to depression. It’s the price paid for the emotional connection your brain can make. ☯️ Thanks for sharing your experience.
Something I have found helpful, especially in seasons when I have been living alone, is setting a goal of making sure the dishes are done every night. It makes a huge difference to wake up to a clean kitchen versus a sink full of dirty plates and cups with food from the day before. It also helps me in that, no matter how unproductive I’ve been all day, I can say I’ve completed one task. If I’m unable to do it the night before, I’ll do the dishes first thing in the morning as part of “opening shop” so I can have some peace of mind the rest of the day😊
I buy fresh flowers and put them all over my house in vases my late mother left me. It makes me sooooo happy. Candles too. Soft lighting. I love my house. This video 💯!
I feel so silly sometimes for being the friend that cares soooo heavily about the interior design or vibe of my space. Like to the point of it influencing crucial decisions, I need my space to be at its most cozy and welcoming at all times. So this video really validated that feeling. I thought I was just being ridiculous
Going thrifting by myself is one of the biggest activities that got me through a breakup and having to put my house back together by myself. Love that it’s a cheap/free activity and a 3rd space where I can hang out and just look at things.
Thank you to you and your friends for sharing. I’m staying in the family home for now after divorce (I instigated) and started to decorate immediately (during depression) so it’s taking a long time between sleep days. Painting walls by hand has heavily reduced rumination, not as much healing using the roller. Decluttered before separation. Photoshopped art and framing it leading up to separation as I wasn’t allowed to have art on the walls. Am obsessed with it. Yay! Taken out shelving in wardrobe, changed out knobs for handles on all cupboards, changed up colour schemes and painted and bleached furniture. Hung black curtain rods near ceiling to add about 1ft of height, am going to make neutral curtains now I’m replacing old cream blinds. Painting bathroom, changed out trim that would hurt you if you got close to it, organising spaces now the hoarder has gone and set up a workshop and new craft/storage room. House is starting to feel like my home for the first time in 16yrs. Don’t like being in main bedroom at the moment so am moving down stairs to the smaller room that I’ve painted. Rearranged furniture. People didn’t understand that taking on new home projects has been the right thing for me and they kept telling me to sew instead. I needed to get rid of the old colour scheme of everything and not much had been done in my 25yr old home anyway. Making the garden easier to manage. It’s giving me confidence, no one is telling me off or restricting me and it’s all on the tiniest budget. Repurposing a lot of stuff. Am walking around the main yard late afternoon and reminding myself this home is mine and it’s going to be okay. Usually do one job at a time but having many projects on the go instead as if I make a list but don’t want to do it, I’ll end up in bed all day. Not making a list and just randomly doing 5mins-3hrs on any job is making progress with sleeps between jobs. Hang in there everyone, it takes time and therapy and doing what’s right for you. ❤
@@lightworks3172 Thank you so much. I’ve made a little decor store in my enclosed shed that’s fun to shop. I’ve painted some spheres brass so I can have some big brass balls.
@@DinaVanMater-mm6zk Thank you, Dina! It’s so cool to achieve my goals even if I’m in learning mode. I’m doing Wonder Woman twirls in every space where he made 3D carpet. It was an Olympic hurdling event to get from one spot to another and I’d give myself a medal for not getting hurt.
I love love love this. My tip is hang little disco balls and prisms in the windows for rainbows. Thrifting can be tough- I became addicted to thrifting for the dopamine boost and a replacement for relationships. Then my place got hoarder-y and cluttered and my shame over that made me more depressed. Now I do a little thrift but I have to keep it under control! Cleaning my home- on a 20 minute timer - makes me feel better, and having youtube videos on like yours in the background is like having a friend there while I do it. Thank you.
A great option if you have any outdoor space access, when you're feeling like laying around doing nothing, just go and do that outside. Then you wont feel so bad about it bc you're technically doing an activity, you're getting fresh air and vitamin D, and you can pretty much justify doing anything that seems lazy inside the house bc you're doing it outside so its good for you! Even if its cold, just rug up in your warmest clothes, wrap yourself up in blankets and spend ten minutes playing on your phone outside instead of inside. Its incredible how little of mental health support is doing big things and how much of it is just making small steps and little mindset shifts
I think this was my favorite video of yours yet (tied with the condo tour)! It's funny how you "meet" people online or in real life who are going through similar things. For about a year prior, your videos would pop up in my recommendations, but it wasn't until after my trauma, when rebuilding a home became the biggest part of my healing journey, that I started watching them. Paige, your videos have been such a helpful resource for me in this process. Thank you for sharing your story and creating these videos! It's only now that I'm 2.5 years into “home making” that I’ve found that having a home base is so important for your mental health, but you’ve taught me that filling that home with beautiful, fun things or moments is key. As a friend told me when I was in the thick of things “home is wherever you’re creating.” So, I wish everyone who reads this continued healing and a safe place for living and creating. 💛
So... without getting too longwinded... I went through a hormonal (chemical) and situational depression a year ago... and this channel was a major reference point for me because I too took on interior design as a hobby to help alleviate how sad and tired I was. An additional tip that I did (on top of many similar things that are listed here)... on the days where I was just seriously too low energy to do anything but work and then lie down in my free time... Instead of ruminating, I would spend that time lying in bed to pull out my computer, get on Pinterest, and make boards where I could continue to curate my style and goals with my home improvement projects. It tied into the hobby and for the really, really hard days where you don't even have the energy to go to the thrift store or organize anything practical, I found a way to get my mind off of things in a way that was still very productive to my hobby... just in case anyone needed any additional tips on what to do on the extra tired days. And by the way, I am doing very well a year later. Between medical/ therapeutic help as well as let some of those situations pass... I am doing so well now, so it does pass.
I love this! I'm curious to hear other people's rituals. Here's what's been working for me lately: In the morning, I set a calming tone with a short Buddhist prayer. I recite it for myself, then dedicate it to one other person and finally, a group of people. In the shower, I like to use essential oils to help me wake up. Back in my room, I throw open the blinds and windows, welcoming the sunlight and fresh air. Unloading the dishwasher and making the bed are my final acts, both leaving a sense of order and allowing the room to air out. For a quick errand and some fresh air, I stroll to the nearby co-op, often picking up a pastry, coffee, piece of fruit, or even my lunch. Weather permitting, I savor my lunch or coffee on the porch, a moment of peaceful solitude even if I'm alone. Logging off work at the same time each day has become a ritual, and lately, my Sonos has been a game-changer. Podcasts, music, and new recipes fill my evenings, with me trying something fresh in the kitchen at least twice a week. Now that I'm back in my hometown I like to invite one of my parents or a friend for dinner at least twice a week as well. To beautify my space, I visit my favorite florist every other week for a fresh arrangements. And to end the day, a quick swipe with all my surfaces down with my favorite Mrs. Meyer's scent which greets me in the morning. My love for little moments extends to collecting antique wares I use daily, like an antique teapot and silver bowls for snacks. It's all part of my ongoing effort to infuse everyday life with beauty and meaning. Lately, though, the best purchase has been my Noguchi pendant lamp. Its soft glow bathes the room in magic at night, a final touch of serenity before sleep.
This sounds so beautiful! I definitely plan on trying this routine out with my incense and (beeswax and non) candles to the mix. I also recommend growing herbs in the kitchen as a source of beautiful to your routine, if you haven't already. Cheers!
So many great suggestions in this comment. I cut and pasted it to my journal:) Loved your use of words and writing, i was transported. Savor lunch or coffee- you bet!
Great video! During more traumatic times in my life, my home was a necessary escape from crippling social anxiety, and as a result became nothing more than a hotbed for dissociative activities like video games, weed, online forums, etc. Over time it became easy to surrender to this behavior as being “the real me” behind closed doors, in contrast to the person I had to present in public. The world was a burden, and home was a crash landing to cope. I’m so fortunate that through a lot of hard work, my traumatic situations are gone, but the habits at home lingered for years. Learning that it’s ok to create structure and “rules” just for yourself at home has been transformative. For me it helps build a sense of self-respect and trust, and it’s helping to turn my home into a place that’s still peaceful, but also a hotbed of growth and inspiration. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it’s a noble pursuit. You can do it!
Really enjoyed this video, I too am obsessed with the warm glow of candles for lighting! I would only add 2 things. 1) gardening, even if you only have a balcony or a tiny patio like me- garden in pots. This has been the best thing for my mental health HANDS DOWN. If you have no outdoor space, garden indoors with houseplants. Studies have shown the colour green improves mood. 2) think about creating art for your space rather than buying things. The act of making is healing in itself, I've made lots of quirky ceramics that are unique and bring me joy everyday, as well as art works to put in a (secondhand) frame
Vacuum my house, it’s an easy chore and I there’s something satisfying about dumping the dust out, and knowing it used to be on your floor, but not anymore. Also eating food and having coffee in my most favorite dishware. It makes even a piece of toast feel like an occasion. Thanks for the video Paige. ❤
I want to share this video with my friend who suffers from depression and anxiety, and has issues keeping her living space clean and organized. But, I don’t want to come off as if I’m disrespecting her. I just want to help her, and this video is so simple yet powerful.
One of your best videos yet! It's ok to care what your environment feels/looks like, it's not frivolous! And, like you said, it doesn't mean you have to spend money (I actually think I like your little crate tables better than an proper coffee table!)
Declutter your space 🧼 Declutters your mind My tips: Happy home - plants and good lighting and clean space Happy vibes - anything that makes you happy, i love nature pictures, plants, wood tones in furniture, very japandi style with warmth and plants lots of natural light. Life hack: if you suffer from depression you tend to be on the lazier side, easy access to cleaning tools and anything you use regularly makes for an easier time getting to it. And always have your window curtains open, let that light in, or get thin white curtains so you have privacy but still light. and frosted windows is an option for city living when you dont want neighbors staring but still gets that natural light. Also plants, green vibrant bland make you happy🥰
Thank you, Paige! The idea of adding in little sprinkles of happiness in the form of art in a medicine cabinet, or above your light switch, near where you make your coffee in the morning, is SO FREAKING HELPFUL!!!! So glad that Caroline Winkler turned me on to you.🦊
This was so helpful and I’ll try some! I have bipolar with lots of depressive episodes and the first thing I do when I can start to pull myself back up is clean my house and light candles. It helps so much. A docuseries I watched on senses said scent is our most powerful. Knowing that, now I’ve been making an effort to always keep my house smelling a certain way I like that gives me good feelings. The lighting of candles is so helpful too. Thank you for all of these tips!
After taking Christmas decor down and living in a milder climate, I decided to add snow items for January and February. I found little wooden snowflakes at The Dollar Tree, painted them white and added a bit of sparkle and hung them in my keeping room windows...silly perhaps but they make me happy when the days are a bit dreary!
I live in California and I do the same thing, until somewhere between Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's, when I transition to spring. I rotate the color schemes in my living room and bedroom seasonally, to celebrate and be in the now of those phases.
I do something similar. I put up christmas decor in late November and remove it around January 6th (which is the last day of christmas where I am from) but I always keep up some stars and snowflakes I crocheted/folded in my window. And I keep lighting candles all winter.
Redecorating / repairing and renovating my apartment during the winter of 2021 I believe single-handedly cured me from the crippling depression that resurfaced from Covid. It kept me busy and I had a beautiful space to live in by the time spring rolled around for me to go back outside.
Making my bed is a read game changer for me. As someone who mostly scrolls & reads on it - having nice flat cover under me with pillows in place really balances me.
After my dad died (who was my best friend and who I had been caring for for 3 years) I was a good mess. Told myself I wouldn't do anything drastic for a year and yet 8 months later I bought a house and moved to a town I had never been to before. When the movers came, I told them the living room furniture (rugs, decor and all) needed to be put in place and everything else could be stacked up where ever. I still have that calm, semi-selfie picture of me upon my couch, my feet in front of the fire place and all is calm in the world. To my left and right (just out of the photo) was the utter mayhem, chaos and clutter of boxes, bins n' bags. But I had my living room, organized and welcoming to me... on my 1st night... and it has made all the difference. Great video. Thank you.
Last night I got into bed very early, I was feeling VERY down after spending a weekend in my room with no socialisation. This morning I saw you posted this. Incredible.
I was a recluse for 8 years & my projects were all about my home, luckily I lived on my own in my home at the time, but I learnt a lot of skills & independence during that time time ☺️❤️🇬🇧xxxx
The best part of this channel is not just the interior decor. It is you, Paige, because you are a truly genuine person, or what I call, “the real deal“ I think when I’ve gone Thrifting, I enjoy finding a cool lamp from a different era with a very good price. Sometimes if I go to estate sale shopping, I love finding 60s patterns for sheets with pillowcases. I also like to buy linen cloth napkins. I think the best deals at a estate sales are linens because they’re very inexpensive but high in quality. Love your channel and think you are very worth my time every week. I think you gave me an important piece of advice today and it’s to put music on while opening my curtains. This is really a good idea for me 🎉
Needed this video more than you could ever know. Did you ever think when you were making UA-cam videos, that you just might be saving lives? Much love to you & your channel! ✌🏼
Great video, Paige! I learned early on how to clean and decorate my way through life's hardships. I remember my Great Grandpa's funeral, relatives from all 4 corners gathered on Grandma and Grandpa's farm ( including my interior designer aunt from SoCal) and in quick order a week of refreshing and decorating began - Grandma had a ton of great old things, there was much laughter, joking, reflections, tears, discoveries, nostalgia and also installing a few new "modern" touches...that was 1974 and I was 15. My sister's and I carry on the tradition. Our homes really do affect how we function, feel, its important to pay attention to the little things. For me, I like a fresh stack of white towels in the bathroom, luxury soaps, candles!, clean bedding, good coffee...doesn't take much to make me feel better! Thanks Paige!
My tips: nice throw blankets, aromatherapy hand soaps, displaying your interests whether that be your favorite vinyls, collection of coffee mugs, etc. greenery/plants.
This has been one of your best videos. It spoke to me. I feel exactly the same about my home. I light candles, play music, and thrift when feeling down. You meet some of the nicest people I thrift stores. Keep up the good work.
Hey Paige, I've never left a comment before but I want to thank you for this video. I have seen a few of your videos before but this one really resonates with me. I'm going through a breakup and we're in the middle of a cold Chicago winter, so your tips are really coming in handy. I've watched it a few times now and it is really motivating. I love your channel and look forward to watching more. Thanks!
Once i heard in a guided meditation to think of your body as a safe place to be like it was your home, a safe happy home. Bang. It clicked! I foĺlow you because I am an interior nerd as well, and yes, our homes reflect the kind of person we want to be. The making of the bed is key. I think of my home like it was my psyche so I try (never ending work innprogress) to make it warm, safe, easy to function in, cheerful, organized, peaceful.. My tips would be: try not to get overwelmed by disorganasation even if you don't feel the energy, WATCH THE BAD SMELLS (please please throw away the trash). Today it's monday morning and I am at home instead of office because of flue, and well I try to stay clean and cozy. Love you Paige, I would like to show you my apartment! Love love love to..
I needed this Paige. I’ve been feeling extremely depressed lately. All I really want to do is stay home. I love these ideas for getting myself happier. Thank you 🙏
What a solid, helpful, and brightening episode. You said your whole family is very aware of making a good place to come home to. It will hold you, soothe you, and help heal you. I wish I'd been aware of this not-often-talked-about aspect of self care a long time ago but... I am now! Thank you for this and for all the photos of your beautiful work.
WOW i just found both yours and caroline winkler's channels in the same week, and i am in heaven. thank you so much for your content, especially this! xo
I had to pause. I'm only about 3 1/2 min in. Thank you for talking about your depression and depression in general. I know it's awkward to talk about with a bunch of strangers on this platform. But I think it helps others to hear that that they're not alone, and we should all be talking about it. ❤
I’ve seen how much living in a home that you like really helps recently. I’ve struggled with depression for that past few years and now through a transition in my life have more of a means to design how I would like. I bought a rug and a new tv console and already it has made me feel so much better! It inspires me to keep building the place that I like and to create an area that I can always feel comfortable in.
love this:) I work in the human services industry and speak to this often... I love our home. I thrift, I collect art, I create... I find it wildly important to me and my family that we have a space that is safe, comfortable, and representative of us!
I'm willing to bet your vulnerability in this video endeared you even more to your subscribers, myself included. Your point about the amount of time we spend in our homes was spot on. Lit candles are a perfect example of a little treat to give oneself. I would also suggest something that saved me at one point: try a creative art or craft. Doing something with your hands allows your brain to focus, and before you know it's happening, the sadness recedes. Thank you.
This is one of my favorite videos from this channel. I have definitely found myself going to Goodwill on a lot of grey days when I can feel my mood sliding and it definitely helps.
I really enjoyed this peek into Paige video! Thank you for allowing yourself to be vulnerable! And, my home decorating tip is the stuff on your walls and bookcases should be shit you want to look at. Never buy art because it matches the couch. Never put books on your shelves because the spine colour matches your carpet, and don't put "decor" items next to them. Put stuff on shelves that, when you look at them you think, "oh yeah! This was from that time/that dumb gift/that thoughtful gesture/that fun trip". Stuff you want to look at, not what design magazines or Pinterest say your home should look like. It should feel like your favourite cardigan. It should feel like the you that you love being even when you're sad. It all helps. Again, thanks, Paige.
I am a student and my depression hit during my first semester. I had just moved out into my 1 bedroom Student flat With little to no money available for thrifting and interior so I started painting to make my home feel more comfortable and homey. It also really calmed me. Gave me an out. It did not cure me (therapy and my own hard work to get better did) but it definitely helped when I was feeling anxious, stressed and hopeless.
I didn’t use a flat sheet for most of my life, as soon as I started using one, I LOVED IT. So much comfier, especially in the summertime heat, and it protects your expensive comforter/duvet cover from staining from sweat and/or body dirt.
paige, as an oldest sibling, i have had to establish my own design sensibilities and figure out mental health struggles before my siblings. your content feels like a chat with a wise and caring older sister. thanks for being vulnerable and sharing your brain!!!!
My favorite things I’ve started to do to make my home happier is two things: If it can be cute be cute ie adorable appliances, cute vintage tins for my coffee and makeup, cute vintage containers for my pills/tooth brush, my newest obsession is vintage ceramic light switch covers! The other which is a simple one I wish I had done earlier is putting away my toaster when I’m not using it. Having less clutter on my counter in the kitchen is so nice and helps me feel more organized. I have yet to jump on the making my bed train however this video really inspired me. It’s so lovely to see a creator I admire talking about mental health. As a person pursuing their masters to be a therapist it’s great to see!! Thanks Paige! Oh ps. I turned off my lights and lit candles while watching this and I do feel more relaxed! It works people!
Super sweet video. 😊💕 My one additional “home-cure” is turning showers into spa moments. I bring in a small, dim light, chill music and a candle and do a whole scrub/mask/moisturise routine. I’m not depressed but if I ever have a week that is too overwhelming, turning my tiny bathroom into a tiny home-spa really helps me calm down.
Thank you so much for this video Paige! I’ve also struggled with chronic depression and anxiety for my entire life, and have had a similar experience where I suffered from a deep depressive episode that took almost 2 years of therapy and medication before I was “ok” again. I am such a huge proponent of just TALKING about it because I didn’t realize how I was feeling wasn’t normal until I saw another UA-camr (Molly Burke) talk openly about her mental health struggles. You don’t know what you don’t know! Thank you for using your platform to share this ❤
I'm not usually one to comment on youtube videos, but I discovered your channel sometime this late summer/early fall right after I had gone through a horrible breakup. Since then, this channel has been one of the brightest spots in my life. It has inspired me so much and brought me so much joy through this time of grayness. I have found a passion that I had never really known before -- interior design & thrifting and what not -- so thank you Paige!!!
The loneliness after a breakup can be so painful. UA-cam videos helped guide, distract, and entertain me after a major breakup last year. Paige's videos are so down-to-earth!
Right after I had my son, we moved to our first house when he was a month old. Going out on weekly or even 2x a week thrifting trips when I was running errands really helped me mentally
I love your stories. Turns out most of my family has some form of anxiety issue. We are all “home bodies.” I make my bed every day, light candles, and go for a walk or at least out in the garden. I bring a bit of nature inside: twigs, a flower, moss and cones…Whatever. It’s nice to observe nature in its season. Thanks. Really helpful.💜🐇
I always feel so much better after clearing a space of clutter, no matter how small, and/or getting rid of stuff that's no longer serving me. It feels like a weight is being lifted off of me when I do this. (Visual clutter makes me feel anxious and it's often a reflection of how tired and/or overwhelmed I feel at the moment.) It also helps me to see the things I already have with new eyes and I might rearrange them in a way that gives them new life.
Wow. What a beautiful video. Thank you for sharing. I recently moved and the 'not having pictures on the wall' and not knowing what I wanted to do with the space was actually bringing down my mood. I love your advice on just use what you already have and make the best of it. How wise of your Mom! I am excited to try that. That, and the thrifting.
Hi Paige, l've never commented before but l've been watching for years and this is one of my favorite videos on UA-cam now. Thank you for opening up and sharing these vulnerable, warm, hopeful bits of information, it's so helpful and I know I'll be coming back to this video a lot. You are so kind. Thank you 🫶
My number one tip is...When you get out of bed, do your morning stuff, then get dressed. Even if you're just going to lay down again. Living in pajamas is freaking depressing, IMO.
I needed to hear that. Thank you.
I don't care how gloomy it is outside, I always feel like if I've got jeans and a t on, I'm ready to stay in or go out.
this is true
i agree except i allow myself to change back into my pajamas if i need to. i have to put on my actual clothes and live in those first
When I moved out, I waited waaay too long to have people over. Don't do that! I kept putting it off because the place wasn't "ready" yet but you will be surprised what a few candles, lovely drinks in cute glasses, and the laughter of your friends will do for your space. And the feeling lingers!
Housewarming is so real ✨🧡✨
The feeling really does linger. I've only had a couple gatherings at my place so far, but I still get the warm fuzzies thinking about those few times.
tidying and doing random chores around my home makes me feel so much better when I’m sad. it gets me moving and the result is a clean space, win win.
Yes! Especially for those who can’t afford anything but food/rent. A clean space feels uplifting. 🌲
Me too! Cleaning and tidying my space feels like I get to have a little bit of control over my life, even for only a moment
@@JojoboxVlogs Verse to those who think and see human life on earth as daily mating/dating:
1 Corinthians Chapter 7
32 But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord:
33 But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife.
Know it:
LOVE = SPIRIT,
LUST = CARNAL.
What do we want? - being daily lusted after and to keep living ourselves and keeping everyone else also in the sin of fornication?
Or
do we want and ask for to BE LOVED ON DAILY BASES?
Ephesians 4:2 - With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
1 John 4:10 - Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Genesis 5:2
Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
Ecclesiastes 12:7
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
I hadn't thought of this and looooove the idea! Thx
I’ve been doing this for year now too, I put photos inside the kitchen and bathroom cabinets so you see them only when you open them and it doesn’t ’clutter’ the look of the room.
Love this
What a great idea! Esp for the kids. I think I will print up an old photo of them to tape inside the medicine cabinet, just to give e them a giggle.
I second the shout-out to Caroline! I, too, am an older woman who appreciates and is influenced by these two.
I love the fact that so many comments here on Paige's UA-cam channel and Caroline's are from older people 😍
@@danielamiguens Yes. I too am a 67 year-old retiree (with only one leg, so I watch a lot of youtube and QVC) Thanks, Peggy
Another 70+ year old who identifies with lots of your content including today's. ❤ My swear words are from a different era, however. 😄
Haha
That's beautiful! I grew up in Texas and we get excited about rain too.
I put lamps on and go "cozy" when it rains. Also: soup.
Love this- going to do this with my toddler ❤
When I rearrange/personalize my space, I feel like I’m getting a hug from myself when I spend time in it.
so real!! i love this wording, that’s totally how it feels ❤️🩹
yess, such a good way to phrase it! I feel the same way 🧡
The combination of you being vulnerable, the design tips and inspiration and just the overall warm atmosphere of this video was spot on.
Yes I have nice slippers, nice socks, robes, matching sets, sweaters. It’s like you’re royalty.
I love that this comes one hundred percent from the heart of an actual depression survivor.
"Creating little moments with what you already have". Such great advice.
candles raise the vibration in your space. Fresh flowers make you smile.
when my roommates all moved out at the end of a school semester but i was staying through summer I bought a GIANT teddy bear. and i put her on a chair in the dining room. it got a little weird (she has a name and backstory, i dressed her up sometimes - i even gave her a piercing lol) but she kept me from getting too lonely
As I was watching, I saw my empty vases, so paused and wandered my backyard snipping foliage from garden and herb garden. Free foliage filling vases puts a smile on my face 😃
Thanks Paige! Excellent theme 👌
lol was bracing for a betterhelp add the whole time. so glad it went a different direction. thank you for being vulnerable AND a genius. much love paige
I was too lmao
@@ArtJournalLife Thank you for your kind words.
Still use the same trick when I want things to change or improve…that and doing something to my hair 😂
Thanks a lot and greetings from France where you are much loved
My mom did this, too!
The baskets as a bedside table is a brilliant idea!!!!
At first I read "agreeable gravy," LOL.
Yes!! My very first project when I bought my house was to "debeige" it. After many years of rentals, I am SO SICK of neutral walls!
@@ghouliegarou Yes! I also was so done with "rental gray"!

@@wasselteof course!! Thank you for the love for 10KM!
i go on lil floral cutting foraging errands now around seattle because of you! whimsical and uplifting always
Etc etc. you got this ❤
Thank you for this sweet comment!
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Light. Lots of it. More than you think you need. It is life changing.
I feel so silly sometimes for being the friend that cares soooo heavily about the interior design or vibe of my space. Like to the point of it influencing crucial decisions, I need my space to be at its most cozy and welcoming at all times. So this video really validated that feeling. I thought I was just being ridiculous
I've been that friend before, but everyone stops complaining when I rearrange their space and they realize they feel better!
Love this soooo much
Fiona, I'm so excited for you and this next chapter! You're making strides, girl!
❤
aww...yes! thank you for the wish - right back atchya
So... without getting too longwinded...
Cheers!
infusing everyday life with beauty and meaning, yes!!!
I love the way you talk about your family in almost every video. Aside from being heartwarming it also adds a sense of “home-iness” to your channel.
I love that idea of displaying tokens of your accomplishments in your home
such a great idea
Vacuum my house, it’s an easy chore and I there’s something satisfying about dumping the dust out, and knowing it used to be on your floor, but not anymore. Also eating food and having coffee in my most favorite dishware. It makes even a piece of toast feel like an occasion. Thanks for the video Paige. ❤
This was so real and so kind. A truly killer combo. Thank you, Paige!
Declutter your space 🧼
Declutters your mind
My tips:
Happy home - plants and good lighting and clean space
Happy vibes - anything that makes you happy, i love nature pictures, plants, wood tones in furniture, very japandi style with warmth and plants lots of natural light.
Your videos always make me so motivated to organise and decorate and stay on top of things. And search for the right things second hand.
Yes! Decorating for the seasons is HUGE for me. Even in the dreary winter- painted snowflakes and pine and holly berry can live beyond Christmas.
Incredible.
This video was very comforting and I loved it
I was a recluse for 8 years & my projects were all about my home, luckily I lived on my own in my home at the time, but I learnt a lot of skills & independence during that time time ☺️❤️🇬🇧xxxx
The best part of this channel is not just the interior decor. It is you, Paige, because you are a truly genuine person, or what I call, “the real deal“
I think when I’ve gone Thrifting, I enjoy finding a cool lamp from a different era with a very good price.
🫶🏻
soft crying to this video cause it really does just make so much sense to me…a comforting space makes a world of difference for me in the dark days
Great video, Paige! I learned early on how to clean and decorate my way through life's hardships. I remember my Great Grandpa's funeral, relatives from all 4 corners gathered on Grandma and Grandpa's farm ( including my interior designer aunt from SoCal) and in quick order a week of refreshing and decorating began - Grandma had a ton of great old things, there was much laughter, joking, reflections, tears, discoveries, nostalgia and also installing a few new "modern" touches...that was 1974 and I was
Love this video. Love that your dad sent you the 10000 Maniacs lyrics. I may print them out myself. Thanks for being generous and vulnerable.
I needed this Paige. I’ve been feeling extremely depressed lately. All I really want to do is stay home. I love these ideas for getting myself happier. Thank you 🙏
I know what you mean. 😢
I hope you feel better soon 💐
Vacuuming always gives me a little boost, and it’s easy to do quick in a small apartment. Loved this video, Paige!
I agree.
My one additional “home-cure” is turning showers into spa moments.
Thank you for using your platform to share this ❤
Whenever i feel sad, I like to listen to music and clean. It gets me up and moving around.
This is the kind of video that I didn’t know I wanted. Such great points and tips. Thanks again for everything Paige!
this was so tender, and I really needed some of these tips as someone who just went through a breakup
Thank you 🫶
I loved this video, Paige. Thanks for sharing it with us ❤
