The one i got for my daughter has a slip knot so it can go around your wrist and be secured. You can then throw a palm strike and release it for an extra for of reach and not lose it.

The Monkey's fist was designed to be the knot on the end of something called a "heaving line" used to toss a small line to a ship to be towed or tied up. it was then secured to a much heavier, to be hauled back to the originator. It was NEVER designed to be a weapon. However effective it may be as one. You'd be better off using 2 foot long piece of rope and hitting someone with the end of it.

John Damage well attacks aren’t always deadly. Things like tasers pepper spray mace whips etc. cause a lot of pain and other effects (pepper spray temporarily blinds) without actually causing major long term injury
For a monkey fist to be any good you really need to use a solid iron ball from eBay or aliexpress about 40mm diameter. And have a decent loop handle on the end for to fit round your wrist so it can’t be yanked off you.

Glass marble is the best. With it you can have it on your keyring ring and board the plane. The last time I traveled on a plane in my carry-on I had 2 pairs of over the calf socks and in my pocket I had 2 rolls of quarters. Put one sock inside the other then put both rolls of quarters inside. You'd be able to knock out anyone that tries to attack you.
as kids we actually played with similarly home made flais, just fill the sock with wet sand and it's heavy enough for a meaningful impact Hardly a self defense tool though, you won't go - "just wait there mate, imma piss on the sand and cram it to the sock, it'll knock your lights out for sure"
we use to make this with a thick bolt and chain in the 90s they where so effective at cutting heads open fast and defenetly they will make you back up no matter how fat or big you are verry satisfying 😈😄
Just a note: if you're in California and an officer asks what you use your monkey fist for, DO NOT say it's for self defense. You will be arrested for being in possession of an illegal weapon. I live in Orange County and the officers, either local city or the county sheriff, neither have a good sense of humor surrounding monkey fists.

Not that I want to sell anything I make but I figure I have about $7 in each one I make if that. Mine are not for keychains and the wrap and handle are 4 14' 550 cords folded in half so 8 strands. The biggest flaw I can see is with the length of the string, if you can get a good slingshot effect it could do a ton of damage.
Make longer handles for greater velocity and more meaningful impact. Now, again... with feeling this time!

They work well. All it is a flail made of rope rather than iron. Cheap effective weapons if your willing to use them.
It also has a core that puts some weight into the Money's Fist. And it can be made with paracord

Keep in mind that defensive tools like this bounce back, so you'll need to swing it in an downward X pattern. Aim for the collarbone.

Put one sock inside the other then put both rolls of quarters inside. You'd be able to knock out anyone that tries to attack you.
as kids we actually played with similarly home made flais, just fill the sock with wet sand and it's heavy enough for a meaningful impact
Hardly a self defense tool though, you won't go - "just wait there mate, imma piss on the sand and cram it to the sock, it'll knock your lights out for sure"
Hopefully you are taller than the attacker plus if you miss, hope that you can protect yourself in other ways. My opinion it's totally useless

we use to make this with a thick bolt and chain in the 90s they where so effective at cutting heads open fast and defenetly they will make you back up no matter how fat or big you are verry satisfying 😈😄

Just a note: if you're in California and an officer asks what you use your monkey fist for, DO NOT say it's for self defense. You will be arrested for being in possession of an illegal weapon.
I live in Orange County and the officers, either local city or the county sheriff, neither have a good sense of humor surrounding monkey fists.
So they go by purpose of carrying over there, and not the item itself? If I was carrying a large wrench for self defense, would that make a wrench illegal? Coming from a free state, your laws and police application of law baffles me.

I'm new to wrapping and have made some great self defense items. I wanted to see how much you sell yours for. Not that I want to sell anything I make but I figure I have about $7 in each one I make if that. Mine are not for keychains and the wrap and handle are 4 14' 550 cords folded in half so 8 strands.
