- On 31 July, Joe Thompson became New Zealand’s first convicted serial rapist, pleading guilty to all 129 charges spanning over a decade. This is the largest number of guilty pleas in any Commonwealth country. Thompson received 30 years’ imprisonment. In the late 1980s, Auckland was considered a safe place and somewhere to raise a family. Parents were comfortable leaving their young teens home alone at night, and young women often walked home alone after dark. That was until New Zealand police discovered the possibility that a serial rapist was operating in the South Auckland area. Citizens became gripped with fear, installing greater security in their homes and sleeping next to weapons. In some areas, vigilante justice groups formed with the hope of catching the serial offender.
Twenty-nine rapes were already linked by law, and a month later, 37-year-old Joe Thompson pleaded guilty to multiple violations. His sentence was 30 years in prison with no parole for 25.

One day we came across Joseph Thompson . he was a short insignificant little man that heaped misery and terror on South Auckland and greater Auckland.clearly his years 'banged up' in Pare had taken there toll on him . the cops like John Manning that worked this case to bring this grot down have my utter most respect

One morning in Mangere I was on my way to work & I found it funny seeing a palagi male nd female jogging across the road & I genuinely thought💭"Where did you guys come from!?" Lol because no one in our neighbourhood goes for an early morning jog nd then I clicked they were undercover cops. Well done to all the Police involved in finally catching this p*ick.

I was in the same street at the time he was caught and arrested. A friend and I walked past someone posing as a homeless person sleeping on the footpath. I said to my mate "that's a cop". I went up to the so called homeless person and said "you have to do better than that, you've got copper written all over you." The copper then said, "Piss off or I'll get you arrested." I laughed at him then walked away. About and hour later Thompson was arrested around the corner.

The first serial rapist that has ever been caught...I swear it was him trying my back door many years ago when I lived in everitt Rd otara an angel was watching over me... My young son was crying and that was what woke me up.. after I pacified him and decided to sit in my lounge in the dark and have a ciggy.. I then heard some one trying my back door and when I looked through my kitchen window I could only see a silhouette... when I shouted he moved that fast and silently I started to question myself if it had really happened. When he was caught I and then saw an image I'm now sure it was him.
Oh wow. What year was this? My family and I have lived in sound Auckland Everitt road since I was born. I can see this live footage in the beginning was 1995 I was only 1 then.. but I wonder if my family who were obviously older than me knew about this person living on the same street as us. How scary.
Very good video, don't get many true crime cases from new Zealand told here in the UK. Had a look at your other videos & am definitely gonna watch a few of them that look interesting. I enjoy learning about other cultures but have not seen much about the south pacific indigenous people. 👍
Lot's of crime cases here in nz but not really talked about. People always think nz is a safe country but nowhere is safe just like japan for example their are sexual assault cases and rape in japan.

He worked at Bluebird Foods, Wiri. His supervisor was a relative of mine. Apparently he was a good worker - hardworking and punctual. A real nice guy. They were in disbelief when he was arrested.
There was also a documentary on his family background. Not excusing his actions, but after seeing that I can understand what made him what he is. It was horrendous.

I was at intermediate school when he got caught , and there was a girl in my class who came face to face with Thompson and she got away from him he tried to kidnap her at the shops where she was waiting for her fish n chips

I would like to know about this guy's childhood and upbringing to try and understand why he was like this.
I remember this and read a book about it which went into far more detail than this could. His father and stepmother were interviewed on tv. They were asked if his violent background contributed to his behavior and his stepmother turned to the father { both alcoholics} and said ' Don't know, we didn't bash each other that much did we Dad '? They were the most sub-human people one could imagine. His childhood was unbelievable in its violence and neglect. If I remember right his parents kept packing him and his brothers up , putting them in taxi's and sending them to each others houses, and the receiving parent would send them back and that's how they ended up in care after being found wandering the streets. Don't know if the book was called The South Auckland Serial Rapist but I got it from the Library. I think it might have been featured on Crime Watch N.Z too. One of the worst childhoods ever, along with the RSA killer.

@On_sight Auckland Firstly, at that stage we didn't know who he was. All we saw was a guy sprinting past us at a great rate of knots with a bunch of coppers after him. It wasn't until he was caught 2 weeks later that we realised who he actually was, and why he was being chased.
