    Love the prototypical start up and the appropriate running speeds.

    I didn't know that lionel used weaver tooling for the lionscale cars, very interesting

      On top of that, the LionScale cars are built in North Carolina.

    I have 9 of these! I had 12 but the bases warp really easily! The bulbs are extremely hot for the plastics used!

    Weaver always made fantastic models. They were expensive but worth it. Lionel i think went into the higher price higher quality, to kind of fill the gap in the market. However now there’s not a lot of lower priced o scale trains, unfortunately

      The Lionel Lionscale models (ex-weaver) are reasonably priced as are their new Vietnamese made budget o-gauge cars. Also, Menards is making super affordable o-gauge trains as well.

    Lionel uses Atlas Tooling as well. The cylindrical 3 bay hoppers and the 4427 hoppers. In exchange for the TMCC licenses. Great stuff Eric, I like these...

    That army troop car looks fantastic and the incandescent bulbs in make it look more realistic because at the time the car was being used it would have been dim like that in real life any ways. Great video as always.

    Back in my O days (HO now), I loved Weaver. It was good product and they had(have) a great selection of unusual, hard to find road names. It always bugged me that Lionel and MTH had a lot of the same old road names.

      Also, I'm assuming once the US army were done with them the US rail companies converted them into crew cars since in Australia, some companies used old V&SAR Overland carriages, VR BRS carriages, NSWGR RUB carriages and SAR Bluebird Railmotors as crew carriages

    wonder if the warp problems comes from the use of the Light Emitting Heat Tubes in the Weaver car?

    • @RailRide
      @RailRide 3 роки тому +1

      It's actually the result of zinc pest in the die-cast chassis, the result of lead contamination in the Zamac mix used in casting the car floor. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zinc_pest

    • @SPUPRR
      @SPUPRR 3 роки тому

      @@RailRide ok. So the chassis warps not the body?

    • @RailRide
      @RailRide 3 роки тому

      @@SPUPRR Yes, that is what happens. Die-cast components affected by zinc pest often expand lengthwise. Since the body shell doesn't expand with the chassis, either the chassis warps, or the shell eventually gives way under pressure.
      Do a search for "zinc pest" on the O Gauge Railroaading magazine's forum ( ogrforum.ogaugerr.com ) and you'll see plenty of example photos and discussions related to these particular cars, as well as others. Not all pieces in a production run will be affected since a production run may span more than one batch of die-casting metal, but for those that end up being cast from a contaminated mix, the defect is undetectable till it manifests itself -- the only cure is replacement since the failure cannot be reversed.

    Hey Eric, I was wondering your thoughts on changing lighting inside cars from incandescent to LED. I want to do that with some of my passenger cars, but I don't know how difficult it would be, and what kind of considerations I need to take into account

    • @Ericstrains
      @Ericstrains  3 роки тому +1

      There are several companies that make easy to install LED conversion kits. I buy mine from guy in Canada named Jack, but there are other who make them as well. Just google it.

    • @War1109
      @War1109 3 роки тому

      You will need to add a resistor because if the LED's recieve that much voltage they will blow up idk what kind you will need but I'm sure there's a few videos about it

    • @Ericstrains
      @Ericstrains  3 роки тому +1

      @@War1109 The LED conversion kits come with all that stuff. They're pretty much a drop in replacement for the older bulbs.

      @War1109 3 роки тому

      @@Ericstrains oh sweet thanks for the info

    • @RailRide
      @RailRide 3 роки тому

      @@War1109 Another source is Henning's Trains, they sell a small circuit board with or without LED strips that can be fitted inside the car with little or no soldering required.
      With the circuit-board only version, you can source reels of LED strip lights from Ebay or Amazon at a potentially lower cost and cut them to fit with the only soldering needed being the connection to the strip lights.
