UPDATE TO 80's TYLENOL SCARE: My hubby grew up in Lombard, Ill. He remembers when that whole thing happened because it was in the Chicago area. He still talks about how that year trick-or-treating was cancelled all over the area, including Lombard. Parents were too scared to let kids go out because the person who did that was never found. Still hasn't been found!
I was working at a Kroger during that time and our bookkeeper lady would come in hung over or whatever and prob take 2 tyl a day, when that story broke ( about pois tyl) she came unglued/ spastic, people had to calm her down ...

They were once ruled by the Spanish and after the Dutch kicked the Spanish out of Holland, they saw the Spanish as dirt. Dutch society became very clean. When when you look at Old Dutch cleaning products you’ll see a woman in a 17th century Dutch dress scrubbing a floor. If you go to the Louvre and view 17th century Dutch paintings you’ll see immaculate houses, brooms leaning on the wall, women sweeping, doing laundry, ironing and cleaning. Cleanliness was very much part of Dutch culture and identity, directed at the hated Spanish.
FYI: The "Pennsylvania Dutch" is a mispronunciation. It should be "Pennsylvania Deutch." They are of German descent, not Dutch descent. An easy and frequently made mistake.

I lived on Long Island at the time. We still had Halloween, but all the hospitals x-rayed candy for free. Scary times.
