- The mining industry faces two major challenges: it is slow to change and generally perceived in a negative light by the general public. The industry is often misunderstood, and its future is at risk. As a mining & metals expert, Alp Bora is passionate about making mining greener, more sustainable, and more attractive for new generations. He is creating a movement to transform the role as well as the future of the mining industry.
Author of “Mining is the Future,” Alp helps mining & metallurgy companies improve their production throughput and achieve operational excellence.
Alp spent more than ten years as an operations and maintenance professional across multiple commodities on three continents.
Born and raised in Turkey, Alp completed his bachelor’s degree in engineering in Montreal, Canada.
A mechanical engineer turned serial entrepreneur, he is also the co-founder of Greenlight Partners, a venture capital studio with the core objective to partner with early-stage startups to build the green technology solutions of tomorrow.
He is passionate about helping the next generation succeed in business. He believes that it is much easier and cheaper to learn from others’ mistakes than to learn by repeating those mistakes yourself. With that philosophy in mind, he has mentored more than 100 students and young professionals.
On a personal level, he is an artist at heart. Self-taught guitar player, he studied theater, was the leading actor in a French play, and even adapted a Turkish play in French. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

This is an eye-opener! I never thought of mining as something so critical for humanity and the environment. And, as the speaker says, it takes a big accident or a big event to make us interested in a topic that should be top of mind. Thank you for the talk!
Never thought how we do require mining for renewable energy.. ❤
not convinced by his "mine" set. You cant mine a mineral in the same place twice. once it's up, it's up, and the damage is done. what is responsible mining? when will we have mined enough to save the environment? When will it end? When are we going to do take alternative actions? when are we going to recycle more of the minerals we have already mined? when will we make it easy to repair tech. Or are we on a face to the bottom both literally and metaphorically?
Great talk. Initially, I did not agree with the premise and I can hear, that for the time being, we'll continue to require mining. Thank you for the invitation to support those companies that mine responsibly.
