This is an instrument that Vangoa asked me to unbox and give my opinions on. I hope you can watch the video as it covers a lot of ground including how to place the bridge for correct intonation as well as the special tuning of this size banjo and some musical demonstrations.
I had a lot of fun with this one and my puppy Gracie seemed to enjoy it as well since she stayed right by my side during the unboxing and demo
I actually found the tone on this banjo to be the best of any of the banjos sent to me including the mini and the full size~
here is the purchase link. I'm not an affiliate but since they sent me the instrument free of purchase I feel I should provide the link.
They have also been receptive of suggestions I have made during the years I've been unboxing and playing their various instruments.
If you are interested you can find many of them in a play list titled "Unboxing"

I hope you enjoy the video If you like my music and videos please like subscribe, share and comment. It is very much appreciated Also I have started to add music to my Spotify account so if you can please head over there and put me on some of your playlists. My 3 albums of NA flute music can be very relaxing!! but I have some new ambient tracks I'm uploading which include tongue drum , synths guitars and the like! Thank you and be safe,
Maria
It's a good thing that the Banjo comes with a case.
Yeah it’s a plus
@@MariaCalfaDePaul The Banjo even comes with picks, a strap, an instruction Manual, and even spare strings (9-26 Gauge I think).
Really helpful video Maria. Great review. BTW love your home, your puppy n your vibe! Thank you!
Awe thank you so much for all your kind words :)
What I like about Vangoa instruments is the Bass Clef Logo.
yes very clever
@@MariaCalfaDePaul The Lotkey Mini Banjo has since been donated to another UA-camr
20:36 Spare Banjo Strings (9-26w which is a Medium Gauge Set) & they list the gauges so you'd know which string is which when you go to restring your Banjo. They do also list the note names of these strings in Open G Tuning (GDGBD) for a Regular Size 5 String Banjo but they actually forgot to add something. The tuning of these same strings on the Mini Banjo is actually the same as a Regular Size 5 String Banjo w/ a Capo on the 5th Fret at Open C.
thanks for the info
Maria Calfa-DePaul
Historically the Mini Banjo was used in Banjo Orchestras as a Lead Instrument from the 1890s to the 1930s & it was known as the Banjeaurine. Banjeaurines historically had Full Sized Banjo Bodies w/ Short Scale Necks, & these Vangoa Mini Banjos are basically a Modern Take on that instrument w/ a smaller body that's proportional to the short scale neck & so it's actually a bit more balanced, especially w/ a Strap.
Wow you are a wealth of knowledge regarding the banjo. Thank you
I gotta say I love the aesthetic of blonde wood banjos. There’s just something about them. The shorter scale is nice. This looks like a winner. Good demo. Nice playing.
Thanks so much. I agree esepcially on banjos as you said cause for me on guitars I like it on a fretboard but not so much when it’s the whole thing. And I was really impressed with the sound and playability. Quite surprised because the other two short scale banjos felt like toys in a way. And the sound was much thinner and the strings were too thin. Anyway I’m glad that I gave away 2 full size and sold 2 short banjos so that I can condone keeping this one. Ha ha
Thanks for watching. I definitely have to put some time into learning more or playing more banjo !!
The Open G Tuning means that if you strum all 5 strings Open you have a G Chord & tuning this to Open G means you need to get either Gold Tone BSS Strings or BBS Baritone Banjo Strings.
yeah that's cool
Another great review! I'm just so inclined to buying a banjo. Specialy one of those mini ones!
Vangoa’s are usually pretty decent. I’ve had good experiences with them.
24:23 Like the Lotkey Mini Banjo (which has since been donated to another Musician) the Vangoa Mini Banjo comes strung w/ 9-26 Gauge 70/30 Bronze Wound Strings which tune to Open G on a Regular Full Sized Banjo. But on the Mini Banjos (the Lotkey, the Vangoa, the Gold Tone, etc.) these same strings (at the same tension) are tuned as if it was a Regular 5 String Banjo w/ a Capo on the 5th Fret so instead of Open G it's Open C making it basically a "Modern Banjeaurine".
wow you know a lot about this stuff
That's a really cool Banjo, & it's portable. Gold Tone BBS All Wound Baritone Banjo Strings would sound amazing for Open G Tuning like a Standard Banjo. The Gold Tone BBS All Wound Strings do have a mellower sound because the Wrap Wire softens the tone a little bit.
Great to know. As I actually still have this one !
@@MariaCalfaDePaul The All Wound Baritone Banjo Strings (BBS made by Goldtone) will certainly allow us to tune this little Banjo to Open G like a Standard Banjo. I believe this could also pave the path for Guitar & Banjo (Virtually all Stringed instrument) string sets that have all Wound Strings (no Plain Strings) because w/ advanced technology, we can make super thin wound strings that are also super strong.
@@MariaCalfaDePaul Gold Tone Baritone Banjo strings are designed to tune a Regular Banjo down a Perfect Fourth or Fifth from Open G Major (Open Low C Major or Open Low D Major) so if we put them on the Little Vangoa 5 string Banjo (aka Banjearuine) we can tune it to Open G Major like a Traditional 5 string Banjo, & as a Bonus we'll end up w/ a Banjo that has all Wound Strings, so it'll feel pretty slick.
@@MariaCalfaDePaul Let's hear what the Mini Banjo sounds like in Open G w/ the Gold Tone Baritone Banjo Strings. The Typical Banjo Tuning is Open G (G, D, G, B, D) but the Mini Banjo is a Fourth above that in Open C (C, G, C, E, G) like a Waldzither. The Baritone Banjo Strings are made to be tuned a Fourth or Fifth below Open G on a Regular Banjo so if we put them on this little Banjo, we can tune it to Open G & play it like a Regular Banjo.
@@RockStarOscarStern634 cool!!
15:42 A Regular Full Size 5 String Banjo is Open G (G, D, G, B, D from 5th string to 1st string), but because the Mini 5 string Banjo (or Banjeaurine) is roughly the size of a Tenor Ukulele, it's meant to be in Open C (C, G, C, E, G) & you got that right the 1st time (this tuning matches the Lotkey Mini 5 string Banjo which has been donated to another musician) & it's the same tuning as a Full Size 5 String Banjo w/ a Capo on the 5th Fret or a German Waldzither which I think you should get a Waldzither because Banjoists can have fun strumming on these. The spare strings are 9-26 70/30 Bronze Wound Strings (9, 11, 16, 26, 9) & they made a typo on the back, the letter names were supposed to be D as the 1st String, B as the 2nd string, G as the 3rd String, D as the 4th string, & G as the 5th string for Full Size 5 string Banjo (the Mini 5 string Banjo is a Perfect Fourth above it). But the gauges are correct & they're amazing.
Wow that’s great that you know about the typo. I will let them know. So it is the package of strings that came with this banjo right ?
Thanks for all the info
@@MariaCalfaDePaul They are a set of 9 Gauge Strings (9, 11, 16, 26, 9) which are the right gauges for the Banjo.
@@RockStarOscarStern634 okay thanks
@@MariaCalfaDePaul They're almost the correct names w/ the full size Banjo (GDGBD) & the Mini Banjo aka Banjeaurine is a Fourth above that (CGCEG). The Banjeaurine has in fact been Revived because instead of using a C scale neck on a Regular Banjo Body (which would make it rather heavy), they simply used a Smaller Sized Body that's more proportioned to the length of the C Scale Neck which makes it much lighter weight & better balanced.
@@RockStarOscarStern634 okay thanks
thanks for explaining the tuning I am thinking of buying one I do have a full size banjo
You’re welcome. I hope you enjoy it if you get one !!
Open C, means that it's a Modern version of the Banjeaurine.
Thank you ,hope your thumb gets better.
Thanks so much. Yes it’s much better !!
24:03 You got that right the neck is maple and the rest of the body is also maple. It has a Resonator back that pushes the sound outwards.
Yeah that’s neat. Makes it a little heavy but yes it definitely does something to the sound
@@MariaCalfaDePaul It produces a warmer sound
@@RockStarOscarStern634 awesome
@@RockStarOscarStern634 ahh nice
@@MariaCalfaDePaul Using the Strap really helps keep the banjo in playing position because of the Circle Shaped Body.
25:21 It sounds exactly like a Bluegrass Banjo but Higher pitched.
Yeah!! You are right
@@MariaCalfaDePaul That makes it basically a Bluegrass-ey take on the Banjeaurine w/ a Body that's proportioned to the scale length.
@@RockStarOscarStern634 interesting !
@@MariaCalfaDePaul You can also use the included picks to get a sharper attack out of the Banjo. The pickup makes recording a bit easier & allows you to use FX Pedals.
@@RockStarOscarStern634 good to know. Thank you
I love seeing Gracie sitting there with you! That’s a nice little banjo! It’s a great size for kicking back in the recliner! I love the look of the maple! I’m curious how it would sound with nylon strings in G tuning?
Oooh that would be cool. I do love nylon strings. And thanks for watching. !! And yeah my Gracie is really a good companion
@@MariaCalfaDePaul Try Gold Tone BBS Baritone Strings for Open G
The Extra set of strings they include are spares & what gauges are listed on them?
I haven’t checked
@@MariaCalfaDePaul Read the Gauges & you'll see. The Open C Tuning means that it's actually a Modern "Banjeaurine" but for Open G Tuning you should get either Gold Tone BSS Open G Tuning Short Scale Strings or BBS Baritone Banjo Strings.
@@MariaCalfaDePaul I believe the extra set of strings are 9-26 Ultra-Lights which are great for Open C Banjeaurine Tuning.
@@MariaCalfaDePaul Hang on, the Gauges of the strings are 9, 11, 16, 26, 9, so it's a set of Medium (9-26) Gauge 70/30 Bronze Wound Strings.
@@RockStarOscarStern634 thank you. That’s good info !
Maria.beauitful .goodbye!!
Thanks so much
21:15 that's all wrong. Idk the tuning for that specific banjo And i don't even have a banjo but i heard the tuning from 5th string down: gDgbd
I don’t understand. This is the only tuning that will work with the strings provided.
Why does there have to be a right or wrong ?
You don't intonate for the 5th string! Because it's not fretted it's always played open as a drone. This banjo does not have a tone ring.
Okay thank you. Il didn’t even think about that part. Good point. And also I went by the specs and what i tried to find out on the internet. What is that big thing then (thats hollow under the resonator ?)
And thanks for the info I’m a novice
So that big metal piece isn’t a tone ring ? What is it? Because that’s what they are calling a tone ring and I would love to understand. Thank you
@@MariaCalfaDePaul I think you are referring to the flange that holds the resonator on (with a peculiar screw arrangement) - the big circular flat metal piece with holes in it. These cheap banjos companies tend to have little idea what the parts are called or what they do or sometimes what their banjos are made from. A tone ring would sit between the top of the rim and the banjo head and would be easy to spot.
@@MrGrahawk ahhh thank you so much. I do like finding out when I have been missinformed. Funny I tried to Google it when they said “tone ring” and I kept seeing similar looking banjos and wrongly assumed it was what they said.
Live and learn as they say. I have to see if there is a way I can add the correction to my video through UA-cam. If not maybe I can pin your comment so folks like me will know. Thank you.
If you skip ahead to the last 8 minutes or so I attempt to play it. I actually was happy with the way it felt and the sound. What do you think?
Hat diese Dame jemals
vorher ein Banjo in der
Hand gehabt? Was soll
dieser Unsinn?
I’m so sorry I have no idea what you said. I will see if I can get it translated
Thank you
