    When KISS released the single of DETROIT ROCK CITY, the "B" side was BETH. The band thought it was just a throw away song. Radio DJ's flipped the record over and played BETH instead. The song exploded and became a huge hit. The unplugged version with acoustic guitars is awesome as well.

      And Peter's ego skyrocketed cause "he wrote it". But he didn't, his demo "Beck" has none of the qualities of the end result. Bob Ezrin is the real star. Always loved Peter's voice though (and his jazzy, grooving drum style)

      @@DaP84 correct. He couldn’t write period. That song also dated back to his old band and another musician named Stan Penridge. My song from kiss! Matter of fact, never ever liked any of their other music! Just this one and it has a real wonderful memory from when I first heard it. Working nite crew, it was lunchtime & what's open all nite...here in San Diego, back in mid-70's, JacK-In-The-Box down the street! Co-worker drove &she turned on the radio...BETH started playing. It was raining, the little wipers on her VW were barely working, but, drove, bought our tacos...and went back to work...2am! Always think of that when the is played...still remember her&the rain &the lunch 47 years later. Rock on!

    "They have a soft side" - This song was originally written to make fun of another band member (Peter Criss's previous band 'Chelsea') because his wife 'Becky' was always calling and interrupting band sessions asking when her husband would be home.
    Peter Criss originally pitched it to the band as a faster paced song but this is what it turned out to as. It's also disputed that Peter Criss actually wrote the lyrics. His friend Stan Penridge who was also in Chelsea most likely wrote almost all of it and Peter Chris had a very minor role in the writing. KISS producer Bob Ezrin composed it and polished up of the lyrics.
    From Wikipedia - In his autobiography, Simmons recounted that "I have never seen [Criss] compose a single song. Peter might have contributed a line or two of the lyrics, but after listening to Penridge's original demo, it's clear who made the original song". Paul Stanley agreed with Simmons but Criss says they are just jealous that it's his song and not one of theirs.

      @magna116 Рік тому +2

      Stan Penridge wrote this song. Penridge used to be my neighbor so I have lots of inside info on all things Kiss. Peter also lived 15 miles away from me for a time. Him and Ace would hang out at open mic nights at this small backwoods bar on weekends.

    • @evilfantasy69
      @evilfantasy69 Рік тому

      @@magna116 I agree. One of the main defenders of Criss is his wife so that's where I have great skepticism. I have no problem with wifes, girlfriends or whoever telling their story but they almost always tell a very favorable story of their man and give backhanded replies to the rest of the band. First hand information can be sketchy enough. Second hand information shouldn't be trusted at all.

    Beth is the only song that they scored a Grammy Award for the band in 1976. I never saw Kiss in their heydays but was fortunate enough to finally see them in 2019 End of the Road Tour. Kiss is known to put on a stage show with lasers, pyrotechnic displays and they certainly did not disappoint. As I understand: It was originally released on the "B" side of the 45 record, as the throw away song to the "A" side (primary song). As I recall: A female D.J. on the radio brought the 45 record home. And her daughter express to her mother (the D.J.) how much she liked the song "Beth". The daughter keep playing it over and over. So the mother decided to put it in the rotation, at the (Chicago?) radio station. The response was so great, that the band "Kiss" took notice, and decided to re-release it as the "A" side 45 record. Then it climbed its way up the charts to number 7. (As I recall).

    Casablanca Records released "Beth" in August 1976 as Destroyer's fourth single. The album, released on March 4, peaked at #11 on the Billboard 200, but quickly began to decline. Its first two singles, "Shout It Out Loud" and "Flaming Youth", failed to match "Rock and Roll All Nite" - until then the group's most successful song in the United States - and Casablanca Records executives had to choose another song from the album to release as a single. Casablanca president Neil Bogart asked promoter and disc jockey Scott Shannon for his honest opinion on which of Destroyer's tracks was a potential hit. To his surprise, Shannon chose "Beth", although Bogart asked him to forget it because he felt the song had only been included as a favor to Peter Criss. In the face of Bogart's refusal, Shannon contacted vice president Larry Harris, who revealed that Bogart disliked "Beth" because it was his ex-wife's name and he felt the lyrics reflected the process of their divorce.
    Before the release of the third single, Bogart took a vacation in Acapulco, but not before giving the order to release "Beth" as the B-side of the next single, in order to reduce its chances of commercial success. During Bogart's absence, "Detroit Rock City" was released as a single, accompanied by "Beth", and was sent out to radio stations. To the bewilderment of the Casablanca executives, the jockeys chose to broadcast "Beth".[17] The song soon became one of the most requested by listeners, and Harris made the decision to reissue the single with "Beth" as side A. One significant contributor to "Beth"'s popularity was Rosalie Trombley, at the time the music director at "The Big 8" CKLW in Windsor, Ontario, immediately across the Detroit River from Detroit, Michigan. Trombley's daughter had a copy of "Detroit Rock City", but was hooked on "Beth" and convinced Trombley to add it to CKLW's playlist. After "Beth" became a hit, Kiss presented Trombley's daughter with a gold record.[18] Upon Bogart's return, he was forced to accept the situation due to the song's positive commercial reception. "Beth" reached #7 on the US chart, the best in Kiss' career, and achieved a gold record certification from the RIAA on January 5, 1977. The impact of the song boosted Destroyer's sales and enabled the album to go platinum. "Beth" received the award for Favorite Song at the 1977 People's Choice Awards.
    The song's television debut was on The Paul Lynde Halloween Special on October 29, 1976, where Criss lip-synced a shortened version of the song while miming on piano. Live, "Beth" was performed by Criss alone on stage backed by a tape of the instrumental track. The acoustic version featured on Kiss Unplugged is the only recording with members of Kiss solely backing up Criss. The version of "Beth" featured on the group's 2003 Kiss Symphony: Alive IV DVD and subsequent album would be the only time the song was performed live with an ensemble. In 2010, the song was performed live for the first time with Eric Singer on acoustic guitar during their Sonic Boom Over Europe Tour and again on their The Hottest Show on Earth Tour in 2011. It has since been again removed from setlists, but the band occasionally performs the song at meet and greet sessions. On the 2019 End of the Road World Tour, the song has been performed by Singer, miming it on the piano.

      @@neilpatrickhairless Their ballads are fantastic. God Gave Rock And Roll, Beth, Reason to Live, Forever, etc. and they've put out some FANTASTIC straight up rock material.
      They've also put out a lot of duds, but when you consider just how long they've been at it and just how many albums they've put out (something like 30 between their studio and live work) it's almost a given.
      Hell, most metal fans have hated everything Metallica has put out since the 90s, yet they'll still viciously defend the band itself.

For almost 30 years I've been singing this song as my dad strummed it out on the acoustic guitar during hippy family sing alongs😂 I love it so much and now I'm loving these reaction videos from Brad and Lex because i suddenly get to experience all these amazing songs through fresh eyes

    Brad for the win!!
    The song seems to be about several aspects of being a superstar band. This is how they make their money, and provide for their loved ones. They need to write songs; put together the music; practice; record the song; put out an album; take it on the road and tour and sing. All that time their wives or girlfriends are left at home wondering what's going on.
    And the band has to keep doing what their doing. Beth, what else can they do..?

    The Video part of this was from the 1978 Movie "KISS meets the Phantom of the Park". The Movie used an acoustic version, but this Video used the Soundtrack from the Album "Love Gun".
    It's Rumored that Peter Criss wrote this about the guilt he felt when he had to leave his Dog at home when he had to Work.
    Although Peter was kicked out of KISS, The Band Continues to play this at Concerts, with the Drummer always doing the Vocals.

    this song made him break into the mainstream. I was a hughe fan of KISS when I was young, I'm still, but less obessive. what I really liked about the band, apart from their stage-personas was the fact all band members had their place in the band and all four sang on the albums. Like The Beatles.This was Peter Criss, the drummer, singing.
    Fun Fact:
    the song was the B-Side of Detroit Rock City, Deejays in America flipped the record over so the housewives could relate to the band. It became a big hit and propelled them into the biggest stars in the world for that brief moment in time (1976 - 1978).
