This album came out in 1977 when I was 5 years old. My dad took me to this concert, and I sat on his shoulders and watched the show awestruck. Ace Frehley (the lead guitarist) inspired me to pick up my dad's guitar and start learning to play it.

KISS was my favorite band growing up....until I was 15 or so. "Detroit Rock City" is a great song. "Rock and Roll all Night" was their "Anthem" song. "Beth" is a ballad sung by the drummer that was probably their most popular song. KISS was very good in the beginning, but then they started chasing the dollar and the fads.......they even went disco....."I was made for loving you" was their disco song.

By the way, their "Disco," song is still played at their shows to this day and is a kick ass song... its just different than the stuff before it was released. Their 80s stuff is great as well, again, just different. Even the last album they put out, Monster is good.

If I remember correctly, Beth was the first Rock song to win a Grammy. Basically, the Grammys were taking heat for never giving a rock song a Grammy so they just picked a somewhat tame rock song from a popular group and there you go. And of course there are a zillion better rock songs that came out that year that got snubbed.

Undoubtedly THE most entertaining band I've ever seen live, and I've seen a lot. Love their music or not (and I enjoy it greatly), but their live shows are simply over the top. As Gene and Paul have said before, they put on the show that they always wanted to go see when they were younger. You really should get live footage when you do their songs, and if you ever get the chance to see them live it's a real experience, you must go!

It's funny, because a lot of rock shows in the 80s' and 90s' use pyrotechnics to liven up their shows. The bands of their time just got up on stage and played boring sets. A lot of bands didn't want them as an opening act, because their show was far more entertaining to the audience. Haters called them a gimmick, even though they truly understood what entertaining an audience was.

Thank you for doing more KISS, like all the fans are saying you have to see them live.
They are all about the live show anything from like 74-79 will be original members (Gene Simmons - The Demon - Bass, Paul Stanley - The Starchild -Guitar/lead Vocals, Peter Criss - The Catman - Drummer and Ace Frehley - The Spaceman - Lead Guitar). Peter and Ace left in the early 80's.
Gene and Paul kept the make-up on for a couple of albums with new members and new characters before removing it for the duration of the 80's and into the 90's where after a few line-up changes they re-united with original guitarist Ace and Drummer Peter for a couple of songs at MTV unplugged. This triggered the Reunion which was announced by Tupac Shakur at the 1996 Grammy's.
They toured as the original members again recording 1 album Psycho Circus before eventually splitting up again. They continue to perform in the make-up with replacement Members Eric Singer (wearing the Catman make-up) on drums and Tommy Thayer on guitar (wearing the spaceman make-up). Fans are divided on the new members wearing the original make-up, especially older fans. Brief fan-perspective history to help you know who is who a bit better when you see different era's of the band.
Must check live from the late 70's and the MTV unplugged set.
They are on their final tour so you should really try to see them live if you get the chance - End of the Road Tour biggest show they've put together. 2-3 hour party.

i really love your reactions so much fun to watch. im glad to see you have discovered kiss. theres alot to like about them awesome live performances being one but i also love the fact that their music styles are so varied that there is something for everyone.
when they started out their music had a raw heavy blues rock feel of the 70s since thats when they started. but they,ve also done rock/disco, early 80s pop sound, 80s metal hair band style both heavy and slow ballad. Also did an album that sounded like a cross between iron maiden/pink floyd called legend of the elder their best songs from that album are ‘I’ ‘The Oath’ and ‘World eithout heroes’.their biggest soft rock hit was a ballad called Beth which drummer Peter Criss sang in the 70s and Paul Stanley (the lead singer here on love gun) did a big ballad in 80s called Forever. Like other commenters have suggested watching them on The Midnight Special is good especailly the song ‘She’ if you want to heat a really good guitar solo. Or for a really great guitar riff check out their song Parasite.
their best known for their ballads like God gave rock n roll to you, shout it out loud and of course rock m roll all night. I hope you get to hear more of their work, happy listening.

And they were just the opening act, on a 4 band lineup, that most of the audience had never heard of. It was very primitive and shocking and dark. Not like later cartoonish concerts as they got bigger and bigger. Live stuff from 75 kinda gives a taste of that, but being there was really something else.

By the Time the title track from the 1977 album Love Gun arrived on record store shelves, KISS had been building a reputation with five banging albums released in just 3 years from 1974-76. Their self-titled debut album doesn't have a throw-away song on it. Every track is good. They updated their face paint personas with 1974's follow up, Hotter Than Hell. Then in 1975, I think every KISS fan was just intrigued by the album art photo of the band in full make-up wearing suits for "Dressed to Kill" and Gene's pose for the photo is iconic. following up with twin releases in 1976, Destroyer (with at least 5 big hit songs) and Rock And Roll Over. I bought Rock and Roll Over initially JUST for the album art, which is spectacular, but it quickly became one of my go-to albums, much like their debut, not a bad song on the album in my opinion, from I Want You, Take Me, Baby Driver (which sounds like a sister song to ZZ Top's classic La Grange), Calling Dr. Love, Ladies Room, and Mr. Speed, to the timeless Hard Luck Woman, which rises above the other songs filled with sexual innuendo and bravado to a more mature sounding. tell-it-like-it-is, break up song, with Rod Stewart "Maggie May" type influences.

Lex's comment on people (who never heard the band) being judgemental about the image, reminds me of my older sister.....I became a diehard fan in 1976. Was always listening to their music, with my headphones cranked up. My sister, who was more into stuff like Seals and Crofts, Andy Gibb, ect, never would listen to even a single KISS song. Sort of like my parents. They seen the makeup and crazy outfits and assumed the worst......Then recently, one day when sis was visiting me, I was playing some of the old songs as "background music". She was like, "Hey I've heard this song on the radio. This is KISS? Wow! I never knew that they sang this song!"....(The song she was referring to was "Hard Luck Woman".)

One of the things that makes KISS unique is that all 4 original members had songs where they sang lead vocals& I think the first to do that.

I loved that song when I was a teenager - I think this was from the double album "Platinum", one of my first vinyl records - also loved "I was made for loving you" (later song from different album), back then ALL in VINYL :-) I miss the VINYL time of my life...... listened to every record a 100+ times... 20 min each side.

I was 15 when I seen them in '78. I was so close I could see Ace Frehley the Lead Guitarist's Blood Shot Eyes. It took him the whole opening song "I Stole Your Love" to walk down the stairs because he was as Wasted As I Was. 😁 I Hope You Watch The Songs You React To Live By Your Self Because Like Rush There Live Show Is All That And Then Some. Enjoy The Rabbit Hole You Found, your gonna love it. 😁❤🤘
