Hey, here's the best rhythm section in Texas, the legendary Double Trouble! And the guitarist, Denny Freeman & Charlie Sexton, such amazing texan musicians! And Gordie Johnson (it's his song i think)& Jonny, who was discovered very early age(just like Charlie)...If people couldn't respect what they're doing: just keep your opinion 4yourself...
Jonny is absolutely amazing. Nobody can sing the blues like him. He’s has that awesome voice since he was a kid, just keeps getting better with age. Love you Jonny your the best ♥️🌹♥️
I remember watchin this performance, the other song he did that night was a Dr. Jon tune, that one was probably the best blues performance I have ever seen, wish someone would post that one, I think it was called "No one like you"
I miss Stevie Ray, as much as I know he could do it. Johnny would never and should never try. I love both of them for who and what they are. Bless the blues and bless Johnny lang! felt good to see this!!!
Goose bumps, very inspirational. What a great sound, this people is proof how important the rythym section is, you can be a great player, however, it's the engine room that makes the difference and the cream on the cake. Thanks for posting, I'll be watching this on a few times, lol.
an interesting story behind the studio recording of this song: i read this in an interview circa time of release. the intro ryhthm guitar part was too hard for lang to get ( believe it or not) and they scratched him from doing it on the album and got either charlie or denny ( not sure which) to record it. as you see live the story is the same. hard to believe lang had such a hard time with the timming of this song huh? but it's true!
I know this is resurrecting an old comment, but the guy that wrote the song is Gordie Johnson, he's the one in the red shirt playing the white SG. He had a band with Chris Layton for awhile called Grady. Check out the original version of this sometime by Gordy's band Big Sugar. He's an unbelievable player, and while I prefer Johnny's vocal, the original of this is great. I always figured that was Gordie doing the rhythm on the record. Certainly could have been Charlie or Denny though!
Its Also Gordie Johnson from Big Sugar. He is a monstrous player with the of the best tones ever. A good Toronto boy too! He lives in Austin now. He wrote this song for the album which was NOT a SRV tribute album it was a Double Trouble album co written with many different artists. Including KWS, Susan Tedeschi, Bramhall, Sexton, and Malford Milligan who currently fronts Storyville with them. His is the best track on the album.
Yeah, that's Charlie Sexton. I have the SRV tribute CD 'Been a Long Time' that this song is recorded on, along with the whole Austin City Limits show on DVD. It's a great CD and concert if you can find copies.
Hey thanks Truthislife! I got turned on to Jonny a little while after we lost Stevie.... To see him play with Double Trouble just kicks ass!!! Thanks again!
He's actually on tour right now, mostly small venues in the South and near California. He & I are the same age so he was a big reason why I first picked up a guitar. I had the opportunity to see him at the Hammerstein Ballroom in NYC about 6 years ago, great show. Just do a search here on UA-cam, you should be able to find some of his new work. It's a little different than this, but still good.
Neither Buffet or Reznor are in this video. As noted in another post, Gordie Johnson is playing the SG. "Yellow Strat" is a guy named Denny Freeman who was a contemporary and friendly rival of SRV during his Austin days.
Bought it off of eBay several years back from some guy who recorded the original broadcast. I've never seen any official video release for this particular show.
@spudgun2006 u know stevie is looking down with his thumbs up....rip stevie is sooo missed but u see how the torch ALWAYS gets passed!!!! Brilliant musicianship..........
@therealcraigbaxter gordie JOHNSON - represent . the man does the BEST version of this song - hands down - he was NICE to let young lang have centre stage :)
Do you really have no idea who those people are. Wow!! Ok vocalist Johnny Lang, Rhythm guitars-Trent Reznor and Jimmy Buffet. The band Double Trouble as in Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble.
@Chakirisan The guy on the SG is definetly Gordie Johnson of Big Sugar / Respectables fame. Not trying to come off snobby, and I apolagise if I have, just wanted to answer your query.
@ernieluvsdarian - I don't think Johnny "studied" under SRV - he was only 9 when SRV died. Charlie and Will Sexton did play a lot of gigs with the Vaughns and other bands in Austin in the 80s when they were kids, though.
@pf71019 He doesn't have to be drugged up to play like this. I've seen him since he turned his life around, and Lie to Me rocks just as much now as it did then.
he did drugs but its not like he was a "druggie" he just realized he was going down the wrong path...he was never "messed up"....he looks stoned sometimes when he does his solos....but thats just him...hes always played like that
But Kenny is a better guitar player??? That's got to give every guitar player worth listening to a good chuckle. I don't normally respond to this guy is better than that guy comments but on this particular day there were at least three guitarists sharing that stage who are better than KWS in terms of technique, creativity, and feel. That is all I got to say about that ;)

That's an impressive stage. So; I am new to Johnny Lang, but I'm in...I'm all in.

You wouldn't happen to have his solo Austin City Limits show from around this same time would you? It's killer.
One of; if not the best performances !

I can't believe that he is doing that bend at 3:10 . amazing energy . . .
What a band....woooooo!!! Jonny, Denny, Charlie, Tommy, Chris and Gordie...
double trouble being inductee to Rock and Roll hall of fame brought me here . Love this sound.
Neither Buffet or Reznor are in this video. As noted in another post, Gordie Johnson is playing the SG. "Yellow Strat" is a guy named Denny Freeman who was a contemporary and friendly rival of SRV during his Austin days.

@Chakirisan The guy on the SG is definetly Gordie Johnson of Big Sugar / Respectables fame. Not trying to come off snobby, and I apolagise if I have, just wanted to answer your query.
Was it the song itself, or just trying to play it while he sang it? Either way, interesting tidbit.
wat movie, i always wondered if theyed make a movie about stevie
I just got it uploaded for you.
Did anyone ever find the DVD?
@iamthedude4321 Gordie is a Canadian legend and he knows 'em all ;)
Do you know who is that guitar player standing on the left? You can see him at 0:42. He does really great job!:)
Love whipper, you in austin?
Un Fucking believable!!!!!
@ernieluvsdarian - I don't think Johnny "studied" under SRV - he was only 9 when SRV died. Charlie and Will Sexton did play a lot of gigs with the Vaughns and other bands in Austin in the 80s when they were kids, though.
are they the same that played with SRV???
With Jimmy Buffet and Trent Reznor on backing rhythm guitars, how could you go wrong?

@drummerboy5142 what album would that be?
who is the dude on the cream colored strat?
@Boldlynuts9 gordie (capo boy to you() wrote the song!
I don't think that is Jimmy Buffet.... at 2:12 he calls him Billy as "yellow Strat" starts a solo.
would love to see him jam with john mayer
Mike Myers is also doin' a bio pic about Keith Moon
is that charlie sexton playing at the start?
Save Humanity LassieSongsUSA!
Actually Johnny Lang was more of an Albert Collins disciple.
Don't forget that's Charlie Sexton there too!
Anybody know if this is on any of his albums?
@pf71019 He doesn't have to be drugged up to play like this. I've seen him since he turned his life around, and Lie to Me rocks just as much now as it did then.
he did drugs but its not like he was a "druggie" he just realized he was going down the wrong path...he was never "messed up"....he looks stoned sometimes when he does his solos....but thats just him...hes always played like that
Yea, Stevie Ray Vaughn; why did i discover him AFTER he passed...
Yellow Strat.
i can't remember, i know the producer was like " scratch lang playing on the record, we'll just record the vocals"
Charlie Sexton!
ya cause he wrote it
But Kenny is a better guitar player???
That's got to give every guitar player worth listening to a good chuckle. I don't normally respond to this guy is better than that guy comments but on this particular day there were at least three guitarists sharing that stage who are better than KWS in terms of technique, creativity, and feel.
That is all I got to say about that ;)
he stopped doing drugs by this time
