  • Unboxing and first use of the Makita DLM460 cordless lawn mower. I purchased this in kit form with two 6Ah batteries and twin charger, DLM460PG2. It also comes in a kit with two 5Ah batteries and twin charger, DLM460PT2 or as a bare tool, DLM460Z. I recorded this video because I couldn't find any independent consumer reviews of the product (plenty by Makita or dealers but not end users). I will record another video after a few weeks of using the product, particularly to comment on the battery life. I understand that the Makita promotion of two complimentary 5Ah batteries runs to the end of May 2021. I have no association with Makita and have not been induced to prepare this review.

    Thank you so much for this very helpful video. A picture tells a thousand words! My family gave me a battery Makita lawnmower for my birthday and I found the instructions confusing. Your video made it all so clear. Jenny (NZ)

    thanks for the review. Because of your demo, I revised my spec. and ordered the dlm460 rather than the dlm462. It arrived this Sat. and as proved to be very light and manoverable. I've also saved a shed load of money. l bought mine from FFX for £600 Inc 6ah batteries. l have also registered for 2 x 5ah free batteries and 3 year warrenty. Thanks for all your help. David.

      Hi David, I am delighted that you found the review helpful and thanks very much for sharing your story. I thought the 2 free 5Ah battery offer was expiring at the end of May so great that you were able to still take advantage of it. I hope you really enjoy using it, I certainly do. All the best, Chris

    I think this mower is perfect for your garden. My 460 is on delivery, I got it with separate 6Ah kit. The only flaw I heard is the red handle being too stiff on hands, probably on long usage, but it may be fixed with a Velcro strap or something... Have fun!

    • @chrisharrison6220
      @chrisharrison6220  3 роки тому +3

      Hi, yes I think it is. I love it and I'm really pleased I bought it. The red safety handle is a niggle, I agree. I made a simple clip by slitting an inch of plastic pipe which then fits over the red safety bar and padded handle together and stops me having to hold on to it. I have also attached a cord to it so it can go round my hand such that if the mower slips away from me, the cord will yank the clip off.

    Thanks for doing this.
    I currently have a B & D electric mower. It's ok. But, the cable is very annoying. Especially as we have quite a few obstructions(apple trees, fruit bushes, green house etc).
    Not to mention that I've almost cut the cable a couple of times.
    I believe a cordless mower will substantially speed up the process.

      You're welcome. I can imagine a cable would be very annoying, it certainly would in my garden. There is a lot of choice in battery mowers but all I can say is that I am very happy with the Makita, it's a joy to use.

      As an update.
      I just bought one. Tried it out yesterday & it worked great. One set of batteries weren't quite enough. But, as I have a drill, I was able to use those batteries. Even though they are 3ah. I used the 'quiet' mode in order to reduce power consumption and it worked great.
      Before, it used to take 1 1/2 - 2hrs. Yesterday it took an hour. And that was with an interruption from a curious neighbor😅

    Hi, can you comment more details about the grass clippings collection of this model? Some reviews mentioned this particular model have problem on clippings collection.

    • @chrisharrison6220
      @chrisharrison6220  2 роки тому

      Hi, as I mentioned in the video, my experience is that the collection of the grass clippings is excellent. The collector fills up almost completely full before it leaves any clippings on the ground (I think you can see a picture near the end of a full grass box). I was impressed even when the grass was wet. I certainly haven't experienced any issues with collection, in fact I think it is a strength of this model. Hope that helps.

    Hello Chris
    Greetings from the Czech Republic and thank you for the video.
    I have three questions for you. How often do you sharpen your lawnmower blade? At what height do you mow the grass in spring /summer /autumn? It was not a mistake to buy a mower that does not have its own drive (self-propelled drive) . Thank you

    • @chrisharrison6220
      @chrisharrison6220  Рік тому +1

      Hi Petr N and greetings to you too. I think I've sharpened the blades once since I got the machine and I was thinking last week that I should do it again. The blades are quite thin so frequent sharpening might change their weight. It's still cutting very well so it's not urgent. I think it has 10 height settings and I am cutting at height 6 currently for a few weeks before setting it a bit lower at 5 and then 4 in the really dry months. Our garden is on different levels so whilst we have quite a lot of grass, it's not all in one place. In addition, each lawn has a complicated shape with lots of obstacles. A powered mower would just be a nuisance for me. It would add cost, weight, complexity for no gain. In fact, this is exactly why I got this mower because it was one of very few that had this cutting width with no self-propulsion, hence ideal for my purposes. If you have a large, flat, simple shaped lawn, then a powered mower would make more sense. Having said that, my next door neighbour has just that but decided to buy this model of mower because I was raving about it and he is very happy. We obviously both need the exercise!

    Hi Chris, I have just bought a new Makita DLM460 and just want to check something with someone who has used the lawnmower for some time. This might seem like a silly question but the instruction booklet is not helping. When using the lawnmower the motor seems to change the rate the blade turns making the motor seem intermittently loud and then quieter - is this the normal mode? In silent mode the motor stays at the same level. I spoke to customer services at Makita who implied that there is a fault as the motor shouldn’t change however I am beginning to think maybe I spoke to someone who didn’t fully understand what I was asking. Can you as a actual user of the machine confirm that what i am hearing is just the machine working as it should. Many thanks,

    • @chrisharrison6220
      @chrisharrison6220  2 роки тому +3

      Hi, yes, that sounds completely normal to me. When the motor detects resistance, it increases the speed to cope and then reduces the speed when the going gets easier again, which saves the battery. You can prevent it doing this speed increase by pressing the quiet mode button. Incidentally, decreasing the speed at which you push the mower, which you would have thought would make it harder or easier to cut, doesn't seem to effect the motor. I've tried going more slowly to stop it revving but it still does it! Hope that answers your question. All the best, Chris

    • @chrisharrison6220
      @chrisharrison6220  2 роки тому

      Hi, as I understand it, to run it needs the following: 1) two charged batteries clicked into place, 2) the 'key' inserted (I'm guessing this might be the issue, its an orange plastic thing which inserts into a slot near the batteries), 3) the on/off switch on the left handle pressed to turn the machine on, 4) the round red button on the right handle pressed before 5) the horizontal bar is squeezed up to the handle. If you've done all of those, then there might be an issue with the machine.

      Hi and regards from the UK. Yes, the mower continues to delight. I have had no issues with it at all. I think the blade could probably do with re-sharpening which I will do when the next season starts. Of course, being electric it just starts each time and runs perfectly. It's been a great purchase. Hope that helps.

    Thanks Chris. You mentioned you did 265sqm off approx 25-50% of the battery juice. How have things progressed re. the battery usage? This is my worry as my garden totals ~750sqm and I have 4x5 amp betteries. Cheers.

    • @chrisharrison6220
      @chrisharrison6220  3 роки тому +3

      Hi James, I reckon our lawns add up to about 400 sq m. 2 x 6Ah batteries are just about right. When it steps up the revs because there motor detected greater resistance, then it uses more battery of course. On the occasions when it spends a lot of the mow on the higher revs, eg when you drop the cutting height by a notch, then it is on the edge of a single charge of the two 6Ah batteries. When the going is easy and it doesn't use the higher revs much, then there is plenty of charge left at the end. So, I think 4 x 5Ah is probably borderline for 750 sq m. If they were 6Ah I think you'd be fine. Does that help?

      @@shedlife1783 Dear James, David White left a comment earlier today which indicates that the Makita free battery offer may still be running (although I had understood it was expiring at the end of May). If you buy 2 x 6Ah batteries you can request 2 x 5Ah batteries free of charge. I took advantage of this when I purchased my DLM460. You may only need to buy the bare tool but if you were buying batteries too, then this is well worth while taking advantage of. All the best, Chris

      @@chrisharrison6220 I’m considering purchasing the same model. Your video was helpful btw. You can get fairly cheap wireless remote mics that are fantastic, or a simple lapel/ lavalier wired one that plugs into your phone or camera. It’s not a big outlay, but makes a massive difference. Good audio can change an amateur looking video into a polished job!

    • @leighmonk

      @@chrisharrison6220 the mic on a camera or phone will pick up everything in front of it, including ambient sounds like a nearby waterfall or a car engine and can drown out the narration. A lapel mic pinned to your shirt, just under your chin will pick up your voice loud and clear regardless of where the camera is pointing. If you’re wanting to make quality videos, audio is a vital component. Sadly it’s overlooked by so many, but never by professionals! There’s a reason movie makers employ boom operators!
