- Thanks PCBWay.com - I've had this G3-upgraded PowerBook 2400c with a totally fried IDE controller for a while now. It's great in every other respect. So, let's SHOW it some respect, and get it booting from a PC card! But... can we install OSX!?

Xpostfacto copies the OS from the cdrom onto the hard drive to boot. You select a "helper" disk to copy to in the menu, and your helper disk was "Stuff", not "Macintosh HD". OpenFirmware on that machine can't boot off of disks where the partition extends past 8GB. If you had selected "Macintosh HD" as the helper, it probably would have booted.
I really hope to find out if this was the solution. Certainly sounds plausible 😅
Xpostfacto brings me back LOL ie Stuffit Expander Techtool Virex LOL
This is how duraga1 videos are born
A useful laptop option in Classic MacOS is to boot off a RAM disk that can be set up in the memory control panel. I used to do this all the time on my 3400c: turn on the laptop, copy a minimal system folder and a few apps to the RAM disc, set it as the startup disk, then restart. Once the system is rebooted, you can remove the CF card (or spin down the HD if you have one using the control strip). The battery life is awesome, and it just flies.
I've messed with Frogfind on my Windows XP laptop and Windows 98SE running in 86Box. Both using the K-Meleon browser and IE. It works great all around. In fact, I set it as the homepage on all vintage browsers I play with.
Ah the old laptop confused for a toilet problem. Leeds to some really awkward moments on the plane. 💻🚽
This reminds me of a windows 7 live CD. It was actually quitte genius since you could run it without a HDD and leave no logs whatsoever on the machine itself. Hirens boot CD 15.2 had Mini WinXP and Hirens PE 1.0.1-1.0.2 have mini Windows 10 which are more usable then you might think.
Real curious if it supports canon printers (or print/fax/copier eg. AIO units) and the modules/drivers, then I could just use that off a USB drive rather than dicking around with a VM all the time (I use linux), or just run it in a VM without consequence (windows self-destructing over time totally sucks roosters).

The 2400C, it has everything, and can brain someone in a fight.
8:30 Looks like you have a new subscriber crawling around on the top left :)
It was great meeting you at VSFSW. Thanks for signing my PinebookPro! :D
Such a crazy fun conference. Can't wait for next year. I've already started soldering together my 8031 computer kit from the conference.
I was given a pair of Pismo G3 PowerBooks, one has an internal fault that prevents it from working from an internal drive. I also have a FireWire 400 CF card reader., which can be used instead of the HDD. I use two CF cards, one of 1 GB with OS 9.2.2, the other a 32 GB unit with OS X Tiger (!0.4.11) installed. I have given it 1 GB of RAM.
Wish i could have made it to vcf southwest. I'm only a couple hours away but it happened to be on the busiest weekend I've had in months. Excellent video as always
I've been gathering parts for a similar install. CF adapter, battery CD-ROM, and 2400c. First time that I'm learning about the manual eject hole for the CF card, though! I thought you had to power it on just to eject with the buttons...
Hey! I love my Graphite iBook G3! Used it through my last 2 years of college and still have it! Toilet seat?!!! Blasphemy!!
I always enjoy your videos even when things don't go as planned. Or maybe I enjoy those more... 😁
you could probably boot it manually from the OpenFirmware terminal, you just need to list the deteccted devices and find what id actually points to the volume.
Action Retro: Look mom, no HDD!
Apple that's illegal!!
I have a bunch of old PowerBooks (duo 280c, 500 series, 100 series) and one of the things i did a couple years back was to remove the battery packs from each of them (which were starting to bleed blue death) cleaned up the corrosion in the machines, and stored the batteries as-is, in ziplock bags. If i want to refurb the batteries, i have them for later, and they can't damage the machines anymore. :)
1:35 Japanese 2400C : Who me? Nothing, TSssss, just hangin' around.......
you can easily fix the lcd by replacing the two polariser layers from both sides of the lcd. i did it on a 32inch sony tv in 2 hours , the most difficult part is to clean the glue and be prepared to use some weird chemicals .. for me kerosine & a blade removed the glue. rubbing alcohol & paint thinner could not remove the glue! you can buy the polariser sheets and cut to size.
with age the glue degrades and thats why the display looks bad.
my fav youtuber i really like your pcs and everything u make u made me get some really old apple things ur my fav thanks!
I was great to see you at VCF SW!
PowerBook 2400c was my computer for 3 years or so. I played quake 2 and unreal on it. Quake 2/AQ2 was a smooth experience at 320x240, but Unreal ran around 16-18 FPS at the same resolution. Still, I loved it despite the performance struggle.
My Thinkpad from 95 eats those CF card readers up! I don't know why but they always just stop working and I have to get a new one every couple months.
Hope they have another con next year, found out about this day of and Richardson is 4 hours away. Hope there is another and we get to see you there
the unofficial installer works by copying modified os x installer and boot into HDD. you need to use an working internal HDD instead. it will NOT work if booted directly from CD ROM
I totally had one of those combination CD-ROM drives/portable CD players! A different brand I think, but absolutely ate through AA batteries
Isn’t that one of the ibm collaboration PowerBooks?
If I could somehow buy that Toshiba Libretto, I would so do it, because I absolutely love old PCs, and I've always wanted to experiment with it.
I figured it wasn’t gonna work when I saw it booting Mac OS 9 on plane in your community post
Sometimes Novell actually has NetWare to use as a HDD server and it works.
I use frogfind on my windows 10 computer sometimes, I like how stripped back it is. An issue has cropped up for me though, some hyperlinks don't seem to work.
I looked into it myself and it's hyperlinks that link to subdirectories. Say I'm on a page with the directory of */documents* and then I want to look at a page about carrots, but the hyperlink just points to *carrots* instead of *documents/carrots*. Typical web browsers will go to */documents/carrots*, but frogfind will go to the directory of just */carrots* and will then throw an error saying "incomplete HTML" because it's looking at a 404 screen.
just wanted to thank you for frogfind as it makes browsing for text way easier in emacs with its built in text based browser :)
That would be the coolest machine to run Rhapsody on. If only it... worked... at all on laptops
Question: Is there a "modern" version of linux that would run on that G3 Powerbook?
You need a Duo 2300c. Much thinner and lighter.
Ah, OS X on a 2400. It's a fun project. I find 10.2 is the best version since it has the best video card support on these. I recommend either solid state storage or a CSS-type hard drive because OS X was really hard on disks back then. Of course, Sleep mode still doesn't work under any version of OS X, but since most of the batteries on these are kind of dead anyway it's not so much of a concern anymore. But I have several spares for the 2400. If you're really itching to get a good one, maybe we can work something out.
3:32 that looks like a mustache
Meanwhile I'm just over here wondering where you got the tshirt from. It's like the one from Mac84, but a different one. I wants it.
That's pretty cool that your 2400c is so upgraded. I heard that Apple designed the machine with the intention of releasing the G3 upgrade themselves, but that never happened so third-party upgrade makers stepped in. Sadly my 2400c doesn't have any such upgrade, and the RAM definitely isn't maxed out either. It is good to know it can boot of a CF card though. I had been meaning to install one of those mSATA to 2.5" IDE adapters with an SSD, like I used in my Powerbook G3, but perhaps I'll just pick up a CF to PCMCIA adapter instead. Actually, I think I've got a PCMCIA to SD card reader around here someplace, I wonder if that would work instead?
If it does, let me know!
Look mom, no hard drive!
Forbidden blueberry jam :(
I can never figure out where to put the milk on a cereal port
something tells me XPost will work if you use an adapter on the IDE bus and still use a CF Card. I think someone else suggested that. Also MacOS 10 has to be in the first 7GB of the drive.
it looks like if Apple made a portable DVD player.
PCBWAY is the way
Hi! I love your videos ❤

About those mac accelerators... can they run while the original processor is also running? That could allow a decent speedup by running background processes in the slower processor to minimize context switches.
And, how much power do the accelerators consume? Maybe disabling those on idle could be worth the effort.
You can't run both CPUs at the same time; there is no interconnect and even if there was it's two different generations of CPU. Mac OS only supports multiprocessor machines with the exact same CPU.
What de fudge. I use Frogfind on my PSP. What a coincidence...lol
Did you give LGR a bear?
Look, ma! Only macs.
where did you get that Clone Shirt ? Merch?
Have you considered installing netbsd on a Dreamcast?
I had the same error with the same cf card setup using a Kanga (3500). I tried all PPC OS X versions and it only worked with 10.1 for some reason.
Did you not attempt to revive the corroded unit? Or at least send it to someone who CAN revive it?
The battery gunk has gone so far on the board that it has probably eaten through enough traces and entered some of the chips; probably a lost cause by this point.
@@3rdalbum yeah but at the same time board necromancy is possible... Ship it off to Necroware you'd be suprised what he can do,
Also isn't the main goal of looking after classic macs removing the Batteries and Capacitors a the earliest possible occasion?... Why do people neglect their systems!!!
Too bad that internal connector isn't working. Maybe you'll meet someone who can fix it? Sounds like an Adrian Black kind of fix? 😅
I guess Linux would be too easy, given its hardware support and all. Though, I'd love to see you use it anyway.
Linux on a PPC Mac is not super easy, even today. Maybe *especially* today.
@@3rdalbum Give me a PPC Mac and I'll give it a shot. And even if a modern distro won't work, I've got distros dating back 25 years, but I could always do LFS.
I wonder if Louis Rossmann could fix the hard drive problem?
Oof that PRAM/memory backup/clock battery leakage is nasty! I'm glad I already removed said battery from my PB1400 and other similar machines. That said, my PB G3 Series (292MHz) is a total nightmare without a PRAM battery installed. It will "forget" which partition to boot from and then can get stuck in an XPostFacto-induced boot loop that I can only get out of by using an external SCSI drive and specifying its SCSI ID with the five finger boot salute CMD+OPT+SHIFT+DEL+(number) at power up.
The insides were destroyed by the battery but then it still just boots fine? Why mention it? I must have missed something.
Different laptop. He has a US model, and bought a Japanese model for parts - but the parts are all corroded.
Interesting ! I have trying to install Mac OS X on a PowerMac G3 beige at 266Mhz desktop model for a video. I have the same message : "can't open, can't open..." And after many many trying to install OS X on the G3 beige, the last message was a black screen with many codes in hexadecimal, kernel version... and writing finaly : "we are hanging here...". Just after that, the power supply of G3 was dead. I search a new power supply for to restart the machine and reinstal Mac OS 9. Normally the G3 beige can accept Mac OS 10.28 max. I noticed many many problems with old machines on G3 cpu : for example, I had many problems for install Mac OS 10.39 on a Ibook G3 Clamshell blue model firewire at 366Mhz. It was very difficult. And on two Imac G3 Slot Loading at 350Mhz models, the machines are just dead after to try install Mac OS X. On PowerBook Wallstreet too, very difficult to install Mac OS X. I finally reinstall Mac OS 9 on the machine. So, I don't understand the problem. Perhaps to made a upgrade of firmware before install Mac OS X or other ? If someone can help me or answer me. Beforehand, thank you very much. :)
am trying to find a broken LC2 or (LCII for the purists) as have 3 g4 Ali Powerbooks in various states of working that I want to 'decant' into an LC2 (LCii ;)) pizza box...because I've never seen it done and I'm old and have no life anymore... happy to pay shipping (to a point?!) can the community help. Needless to say, will send to the channel for a shlits and wiggles review when done...
What model computer are you running?
Make believe.
😮
Wait wait. You can boot a Mac from a CF card via PCMCIA?!?! I have a Pismo G3, so is there a chance that Transcend TS0MCF2PC adapter would boot faster from a CF card than the spinning rust HDD that's in there? Why didn't I ever know this before?!! If that will work, I just might have to try it....
There's also an SSD out there that you can replace the internal drive with too.
While you can run an SSD on a thirty year old laptop, my MacBook 2,1 refuses to detect any sata ssds
Well, can't be worse than upgrading Debian the day before a flight and loosing the GUI 🤷
Pcbway is great
we learn the that you should of used the whole disk as install for mac os 9 so you could install mac os 10, witch is what its warning you about.
What happend with the second laptop ? Plese don't stop here. it WILL run. Maybe hdd controller there is working :)
Apple TOilet

How can I get in contact with you?
6AA's? Any idea on how long the battery life on the SCSI CD drive lasts? Stuff of those ages absolutely ate batteries even if they weren't doing much, I imagine the drive just gobbles them right out of your wallet lol.
VCFSW SO MUCH FUN!
I haven't watched the video yet but if you install Linux to a thumb drive you can just stick the thumb drive in a computer and use it however you need a second thumb drive if you want to save any files because anything you do will get deleted.
Mac OS X? That's disappointing. I was expecting CPM. 🤣
