I don't think it is broken. This PowerGlove works about as well as I remember from my childhood. Flailing gets you nowhere. Move at a painstakingly slow pace and you just might get it to do something, but good luck ever repeating it.
My recollection is that there needs to be at least 3 to 6 feet between the sensor bar and glove. Any closer and the ultrasonics cannot triangulate the gloves position.
Welcome to the club, Action Retro. I didn't became a car mechanic simply because my hand wont fit anywhere in the engine compartment even if they made safety gloves for my size (12,5-13")

I'd love to see you try to play Quake with that thing. Playing 90's MS-DOS/Windows FPS games with the Power Glove would be... interesting, to say the very least.
I had an old book that talked about hacking the power glove to use it in DOS. making it more comfortable, etc. need to hunt that book down. edit: (EDIT* The book's name was Garage Virtual Reality*EDIT* I know we have enough information now but the information was available in the 90s to hack this device and create programs for it on old DOS computers back in the 90s. wished I had one to hack when I got the book.
I converted mine to work as a mouse with my amiga2500. It’s really not great. But moving farther away from the sensors helps. And turning off anything that may interfere with the sensors will help too.
I feel your pain. In the last six months, I've received two items from Amazon that were wired incorrectly! A floppy extension cable and a case fan. When you factor in the time required to rewire these cheap things, I find myself wishing to pay more for something that actually works!
Not to mention the outright lie cables they stock and ship via amazon warehouses. I got one that was advertised as a HDMI to VGA cable and when it didn't work i found it's wiring went from completely random pins from one connector to the other with no active electronics or hope of doing anything but maybe damaging devices it was plugged into.
I can't believe how few subscribers you have. i thought you'd been over 6 figures for years. your content sure isn't holding you back. hard to believe but im sure its an algorithm thing
no doubt the familydog was relieved when kids gave up on this thing in frustration. Though it would make a pretty reasonable costume prop for a rousing pretend game of the Borg Collective vs the Star Trek Federation.
Just clicked in, and I can already tell every piece of hardware involved in this is screaming for us to end their suffering. Can't wait to see how you torture more vintage tech!
10:23 man, I wasn't expecting how the song turned into after that random PowerGlove and retro 8 bits intro to turn into death metal or something like that...
I genuinely would have been tempted to try that hardened foam out on that paper, just to see what would happen. It would probably just turn to dust then, but I still wonder. Glad to see shenanigans as always.
You're NOT FAR ENOUGH AWAY! It was meant to be used on a CRT from the couch! Think about it, those sensors on the display are pointed straight. You need to at least have the sound from the glove register! That means there has to be Line Of Sight to some extent between them. Try further back!
Doesnt the IIe output in color? mine did, composite video to a VCR then coax to TV, found out mine came with the green screen monitor, but the Apple IIe had color!
Awesome there was a sonnet card in this episode! Lol. Can pcb reproduce those sonnet boards? We need a show on building a new sonnet card 30 years later!
As a NASA contractor, i can assure you it doesn't take that much to get hired. Plenty of smart people are around but its government work, so sitting around waiting for paperwork is a big part of the job.
why dont you turn the power glove into a modern vr glove to work with a head set, you know ardrino ( or whatever its called :) ) and some haptics? im sure theres a little more to it like catching IR signals and stuff, that would be a cool project
I had a similar glove for the original playstation except it didn't track hand position it just registered wrist twists and finger movement. It was so very painful to use, after 10 mins it felt like you had sprained your wrist. It was also just as useless as the power glove for actually playing games.
Ahhh! I thought it looked like one of the TossOffa 3000 series. Not very successful. The later models had the Taptic feedback vibration system that enhanced the experience. (Not that I would know of course)😬

As a power glove apologist. I think you're too close to the sensors for it to work. The power glove has a very specific sweet spot which is something that's not 100% advertised (hooray for 80s advertising standards)
I remember reading about the Power Glove in the Nintendo magazine. Boy did I want one. I remember my Dad saying "It won't work." He got me and my brother a Laser XT PC with an Adlib card and a 20MB hard drive and a instead. I love you Dad.
I think you managed to recreate the disappointing experience of every kid who got one of these things for Christmas.

That makes sense.
This
AVGN discovered the paradox of pairing with the impossible to land Top Gun, and that the power glove actually made it easier (for him) to land.
I like how they only accounted for arms the width of a twix bar
There were different sizes of the glove. It looks like he has the small version.
Hah nope this is the large. I just have giant hands

"I love the PowerGlove...it's so bad." ~ (Lucas in the 1989 movie "The Wizard")
The random flailing shows you got some funny ideas about how it works but even if you used it perfectly it would still be nostalgic landfill material.

We need the behind the scenes of you being filmed flailing around from a distance and your spouse laughing ;)

I vaguely remember an article in Byte magazine about doing this sort of thing?
This setup would’ve been considered MINT in 1989. 😂
Usually that foam crumbles into dust...I've never seen the stuff turn into chalk...many gross possibilities come to mind here..

I really enjoy your goofy visual gags. I expected this THONK to be delivered with the Power Glove!
oh boy oh boy oh boy
always loved that concept
Shenanigans! How dare you! 😆
I like how close this video is to the scene of peter parker trying to figure out how to shoot his web, "go web go, fly!"
"Now you're playing with POWER!"
That commercial should have led to a false advertising lawsuit. 😂
"I'll test it on my regular nintendo. " that's some classic slang right there. When you had to differentiate between nes and snes
The glove got tired of trying to strangle your forearm, it wanted to strangle your neck! I'm so excited for the Toshibas!
I never really understood how to really use that power glove. We had one when I was growing up, but it was just so awkward.

your to close the the sencer bar the whole time remember it was made for a tv, you kinda need like a meter between you and the screen.
AVGN goes into detail about power glove responsiveness and predictability.
You know, like bowling, baseball, ping pong, with the power glove, that reacts to hand gestures and inertia, motion etc
I'm impressed it worked at all
Been here since 400 subs, keep it up!!! love this channel.
You brought the Grade A schtick to this video. Bravo.

WoW I don’t know what to say I guess thats one accessory I didn’t miss out on that is a crazy thing Sean
Love the Start Trek IV reference!
I had Super Glove Ball and a PowerGlove when I was a kid.
Is the control box okay? The glove might have had bad caps, but so might the controller.

It also worked really well as long as you didn't expect too much from it.
I wonder if your studio lighting is interfering with the sensors.
Powerglove = Wii Remote - Prototype.
Same concept, same Sensor bar, but more compact on the Wi 20 years later.
And ... that's the power of (g)love!
I love the power glove! I forget what movie that was from, but it was a really BAD 80's movie about video games.

My guess is that studio lighting messes with the sensor. It doesn't seem IR but whatever it has it's getting blasted with interference.
Works as well as i remember

Great video but you should get adult size Power Glove.
the base station (blinking led thing) has capacitors that go bad and make it not work
Ok so the trick is to put it on, then shoot the finger at the screen, struggle for a while, and then end up using the controller on the glove.
You should put an m1 mac into a retro macintosh like the one ur pfp is based off of

Way too close and you have to keep the glove pointed at the sensors. You only need to move your hands a tiny amount.
