Nexus 6p bootloop temporary fix to recover data, photos etc. with hot air / heat gun or hair dryer

  • Found this fix on a forum that allows full access and use of bootlooped nexus 6p. This fix worked for me so i could recover photos, contacts, messages etc. I found it worked perfect, slowed the phone down a little and looking at the cpu info the phone had four shutdown cores (still a fast phone with the handicapped cores).
    Heatgun set at a general heat setting as what a standard hair dryer would pump out.
    The first time i tried this the phone worked for a couple of days from memory. Then it shutdown. I tried again and it worked for another 24hrs.
    I moved onto an old nexus 5 which consequently bootlooped aswell after a week. I hadn't used the nexus 5 for maybe 3 years and it hadn't been updated since. I updated to 4.3 from memory than stopped updating as feared it would bootloop as well. Took a week to crash. Then i moved onto an old Note 2 and left the nexus to gather dust.
    Bootlooped around June 2017.

    Thanks for all the positive comments!, I'm not the best at videos and narrating and am happy it's helped some recover what they need. It is sad that we have been left to"fend" for ourselves with an expensive problem that was not our fault.
    Cheers!

      What's the significance of the magnet?

    • @moooochacho
      @moooochacho  7 років тому +2

      mskrenee . The plate on the back is just a thin piece of steel stuck on the phone with double sided tape. I have a magnetic car holder in the air con vent in my vehicle to hold the phone while I charge the phone in the car. In my opinion it had nothing to do with the phone bootlooping. Since this video I have been using the Nexus 5 in the video. It mysteriously came out of bootloop and has been running ok and I have been using the magnetic attachment in the car ever since. So just an accessory.

      moooochacho Ok. My boot loop problem started when I fell asleep not realizing my phone was plugged in and ended up under my pillow. It was very hot! I have tried everything to get this damn thing to turn on, even the blow dryer. Nothing! Luckily, I bought my phone through Google and had an extended warranty so Assurant sent me the Pixel XL. I'm just adamant about resetting this Nexus 6p phone since I have to return it for my warranty claim.

      mskrenee . Yeah I'm hearing ya. I hate sending these things in for repair or swap. They carry too much private information that anyone who knows there stuff can obtain from the device. I've had my phone out of bootloop for 48 hours once. Was more than enough time to wipe, reset etc.

      No, and it's steadily getting worse. In fact, just this morning I had to do the same trick twice. First time it lasted a matter of minutes and the second has been a few hour now. Definitely another phone but just hoping this can keep limping on for a little while longer.

    omg...I cant tell you how grateful I am for this. I have been using my nexus 6P for close to 5 years now. I really like this phone and don't want to replace it. This hairdryer worked for less than a minute on mine. I didnt want to reset the phone and erase all the data(like other videos were saying to do), so really grateful for this. Thank you soooooooo much :)))))). This is the 1st time I have had this issue on my old phone of 5 years so if anyone else has a problem like this. Try the hairdryer....IT does work. And thanks a lot

    Thanks for the fix! Took 5 minutes of heating to get me about 20 minutes of phone time before it started bootlooping again, but that's all I needed to get my data. This method should hold me over until my Moto X4 arrives in a few weeks from the Google Fi trade in.

    What happens here is that extra heat disables the cores that are causing bootloop. However, it's a temporary solution but enough to make backup and importantly enable developer mode + usb debugging. Once is done there is a procedure to load fix that disables those cores to make this phone usable again.

    My Nexus 6P which had bootlooped at the end of March 2017, after sitting on my desk for several months doing nothing, I put it in the freezer for 30 minutes and then had to put it on the charger because the red led low battery was flashing at me, once it recharged about 50 percent it booted normally, did 4 updates and rebooted fine, it even took the Oreo update when it come out, but then went back into bootloop after 3 weeks of running fine. Currently have the battery depleted, it's sitting in the freezer, and I'll recharge it after 30 minutes and I'll see what it will do. If it doesn't restart normally, I'll take it apart and try some hair dryer heat right on the mainboard.

    To tried this and it works great. After a couple of times, so I can back up my data. I found it took a very long time to get back from Bootloop again. I had tried 30 mins- 60 mins but still failed. Then saw on another post about heating water and an towel and place the phone on some plastic and the towel to heat it up. So decided to place phone in a thick plastic zip lock freezer bag and boiled some water in a kettle. then submerge the top pf the phone into a jug with the hot water. this took about 2 minute to get the phone operational to complete my backups and Dev mode settings. Save on having heat-gun or hair dryer on for 5 minutes or more.

    Shit. IT BLOODY WORKED! I had to blast the phone with a hair dryer for a good while and get it to a point where I could barely even touch it due to the heat. But I was able to boot it up and yoink everything off the phone before it conked out.
    It's so crazy how the heat brings the phone to life. The whole time the phone was hot, it was reacting to the power button instantly and would bootloop until it actually booted. Then as soon as the phone went cold, it shut down and became unresponsive until I heated it back up again.
    If anybody else if having issues with this, all I can say is, if you've got nothing to lose, get the phone hot. Sweet spot temperatures may vary from phone to phone, but I had to blast mine for a good 5 minutes until it became responsive. Sometimes it would get to the section of the boot where the Google circles bounce around and then conk out. And when it attempted to boot, it'd pick up where it left off. It was very erratic. But it got the phone working for as long as I needed it to.
    I'm strongly considering pulling the phone apart and heating the specific points on the board. This apparently gives you a bit more longevity and in some cases provides a longer term fix.

      Random J - ?J . Good job mate. Years ago my brother had to take apart his PS3 because of the Yellow Light of Death (exactly whats happening to our phones) issue they had and heatgun the solder points around motherboard. Some guys even put the whole motherboard in the oven and baked it.
      Why do we consumers need to take extreme actions like these when all is needed is a little care, time and patience during the assembly process or using component's worth a few more dollars. We pay high hundreds to thousands of dollars for these "high tech" donuts only to have most of them burn out just after warranty, which is very convenient for producer..........

    • @RandomJtv
      @RandomJtv 7 років тому +2

      I agree mate. When my phone first went dead and started acting up, naturally I Googled and was shocked at how widespread this bootlooping issue is. And that the timeline of when it starts from when people first purchased their handset is often like clockwork (usually within a 10 - 16 month window). Especially for the 5X which seems to run into this issue more so than the 6P. The phone clearly wasn't built to last.
      There should have been a recall or some kind of action taken by Google and LG / Motorola. There are lots of stories of Google and LG just flat out offering replacements (if they still have these units left) or refunds, because they know it's a known issue. But the lack of true ownership for this issue is bad. Their phones were shoddily assembled. That's all there is to it and its foul.

    I fell victim to this bullshit yesterday. I don't want to try the freezer trick, because I don't want resulting moisture in the phone to compromise my eligibility to return it (which fortunately, I'm still able to after a year). I just want to get it running for long enough to yank every file off it and then wipe it before I send it back.
    I don't have a heat gun, so I'll be going at this with a hair dryer.

      Heat gun or hair dryer they both work just knock the hair dryer up full ball and go it! It can sometimes take over ten minutes to get results. But is something that can be done over and over again.

    Hi there, I used a normal convection oven from the kitchen. Set temp between 75 C and 100 C and wait max 10 min.
    I tried with the hair blower and heat gun...This isn't as accurate as the normal kitchen oven and it didn't worked.
    The temp stayed to low ( bootloop continues) or heated up to far and everything shuts down.
    Don't try the combi magnetron because you need regular heat and a combi oven only has 50 C 75 C 100 C and so on steps..
    I used a old plywood piece of wood and sawed a trench so my phone had a stand, use landscape mode.

      I'm sure Huawei has had many phone calls and emails regarding these issues and as usual would have been rather slow at replying or reacting to customers requests/complaints. If not ignored them completely. Corporate greed!

      Since I don't have any heatguns or hair dryers, I used a normal pressure rice cooker with water and heated it. The phone's area between fingerprint sensor and camera was shown directly onto the steam outlet. It might get a litle watery, wipe it often, and stay put for 3 mins. It will get heated and turns on in the 4 core mode. Then back up using some online storage all ur data

      Additional, when I did have it working, I went to download the CPU Z app you have to see what CPUs are not working. I also saw an Android update so that may have been my problem. Once the battery is charged, I'll download the update.

    Darn, I can't get mine to get out of the loop after trying about 6 times with a hair dryer straight to the back. It does shut it self down because of the heat I assume. And then I have to give it about 5 minutes to cool down and then it goes back into the boot loop.

    • @moooochacho
      @moooochacho  6 років тому

      asnigro . Are you directing the heat to between the fingerprint sensor and camera? That's the sweet spot.
      Mine would get to a crazy hot temp but never shutdown. Too hot to even touch!

    • @asnigro
      @asnigro 6 років тому +1

      Yup, I tried up top in that area, the middle and the bottom. I have the phone up on 2 stacks of magazines with the hair dryer shooting up in the middle. I tried with the dryer about a half inch from the face of the phone and about 4-5 inches away. No luck yet. I might try the freezer next.

    • @moooochacho
      @moooochacho  6 років тому

      animeshjan31 . Hi mate I'm really not sure of any other methods that are as simple as this one. Some videos show people opening up the phone and doing whatever they do. Others require downloads and rooted phones. My phone is stock standard so I tried the simplest approach. Just make sure you direct the heat toward the gap between fingerprint scanner and camera.
