Since Maruki doesn't read his card out loud, here's a translation:

Akechi had his third awakening in Leblanc. This means, in some way, he considered Leblanc to be his home.
I interpreted it as Akechi’s home being wherever Joker is. His one true friend, rival, and teammate.

You might as well know Black Mask Akechi’s All-Out finisher quote now. It’s “I decide the truth”. Aside from taking a darker spin on his old quote, it also shows his resolve to not be manipulated anymore and live life the way HE wants to.
It even shows a reaper with a scythe pointing his blade at the prisoner getting executed.
Remember when Akechi returned on Christmas Eve? He confessed his guilt so that Joker wouldn't have to go to jail.
Joker: "This must be how things were meant to happen."

Akechi absolutely does not miss. His "awakening", although it's really just a fusion of his two personas, is so amazing. A lot of people seemed to think Robin Hood was somehow Loki in disguise. But at least here, that's thrown out the window. You can't fuse something that doesn't exist or is fake. Akechi is now content with his darkness and the light he formerly discarded. And now he marches towards his own path, disregarding this reality and even potentially forfeiting his life. He's gone through manipulation with Shido. Now he's done. He forges his own path. Not one granted to him.
I also wanna point out that he's the only one with a voiced 3rd awakening 👀

@@ScarletBounce100i know this was 3 years ago but akechi being the only one with a voiced third awakening likely wasn’t intended to be anything significant. all the third awakenings were originally supposed to be voiced and all the voicelines are still in the files in both english and japanese, but the audio and the script used in game have a ton of small differences, indicating that the developers made the genius decision to rewrite those scenes at the last minute resulting in there being no time to re-record the scenes. there are quite a few instances of this sorta thing happening for the third semester actually.
Rather fitting that the man who created an entire reality based on dreams would have the god whose dreams created the entire universe as his Persona.
Also super fitting given the lyrics of Throw Away Your Mask.
'Don't sleep through dreams that can come true'
One thing that I find interesting about the conversation about Akechi's fate is that nobody actually says "dead". Almost feels deliberate, but it's weird, because the implications are clear, and Akechi himself comes to the conclusion that he must be dead.
Hearing Atekchi talk about how he would not live in a world where he was manipulated into living for someone else's benefit, makes me realize that he and I have the same mindset. And that is terrifying and kinda calming.
Had you not been respectful to Akechi during his rank 7, 8 and 10 Confidant events, this 3rd awakening wouldn’t have happened. Akechi would still be using Loki for the final battle.
And he wouldn't eavesdropped the conversation during the meeting with Maruki at Leblanc
Azathoth. From the Lovecraft Mythos is known as the King of the Outer Gods.
Interestingly Azathoth is the father of Nyarlethotep. Who is the main Villain of Persona 2 and is heavily hinted to be the reason behind most things that happened in the series
He is also known as the blind idiot god, And that all of reality is just his dream.
Azathoth is more than just part of the Cthulu mythos. Azathoth is the highest creator god. All of reality is simply the manifestation of his dreams. That includes every other god in the mythos, so it's in everyone's best interest that Azathoth never awaken.
You know, after seeing this scene multiple times, this honestly feels like something I'm dealing with in real life.
I want to experience the pain of reality, but two specific individuals don't trust me to make the right choices and ending up hurting, so they've taken the wheel to try writing my life for me.
Taking away the negative repercussions of reality, just only make me more vulnerable to losing face to reality, and that's something I don't want.
Because as long as I live under that shell of a life with no pain, once that shell falls off, I'll just be soft-skinned and trampled upon.
definitely true, if you can break free, do it. take it from someone who feels pretty lost now that the shell is breaking...
Maruki is taking everyone's sorrow on to his shoulders so that everyone can live a happy life...(hence why he is the sin of sorrow)...but everyone has a different happy life.
I find his arcana ironically fitting, not only because of his occupation in the school but also because his entire Arc revolves around him wanting to take all the sorrow of the world, like one gigantic councilor (I have no idea if I spelled that right).
Regardless of whether or not the Akechi you meet is the real deal, he isn’t wrong when he says there’s no value in a world where you’re forced to live by someone else’s whim. And as such, any true atonement cannot take place in a world like Maruki’s.
In a way, even though I doubt he sees it like that, you could say Akechi is atoning for his crimes by standing up to and helping the Thieves in stopping Maruki. He will not allow someone else to dictate the terms of his atonement, and just like last time forfeits his own life to make sure his justice is served.
Even though this Akechi would never agree to it, I like to imagine Joker turning to Crow at the start of the battle and say "Well, old friend. Our final battle may be as allies, but it WILL lead to your death." He reaches into his breastpocket and pulls out Akechi's glove, tossing it at him. With a wry smile, Crow takes the glove and replies "So be it. Take care of Yoshizawa-san for me."

I love how Grateful Maruki was to his persona, and I'm glad Atlus didn't go down some BS twist like
Azzathoth was controlling him.

It is really crazy that even if you say you’ll agree with doc and live in his world, Akechi accepts it. He doesn’t respond with rage or hatred...he just...doesn’t interfere. For me that’s proof that he did want to live despite not wanting to be a puppet. It’s crazy the amount of depth they added to all of the new characters as well as the true fulfillment of Akechi’s character. I fricken love this game.
It could be possible that such is a result of (if this is purely a cognitive Akechi) that he's recognizing he is instead but a creation, a puppet meant to play its part. If Joker accepts Maruki's offer, then as a cognition created to please Joker, he must accept that.
Maruki however made Akechi a bit too well. And of course, wanted even the creation (if it is a creation) to chose its happiness.
*After meeting with TMG in Leblanc, Maruki returned to the Palace, his thoughts on what tomorrow could bring*
Maruki (thinking): If you can somehow overcome my “reality”, please take care of Yoshizawa-san for me.
*As the PTs climb the stairs, Violet stumbled and fell, Joker stops to check but Violet raised her hand, stopping Joker*
Violet (thinking): Joker-senpai trusted me to live as myself, I’m going to show him that.
*Violet gets up and runs faster than normal, catching up to Joker*

You know, I was seriously thinking they'd go for the Christ allegory. The cross shape off his persona, the messiah complexes, taking the sorrow of humanity on his shoulders and giving us another chance, literally making Eden the boss location
OKAY, now that we finally hit this point I can finally elaborate on comments I made about maruki prior. The reason I just CANT fault this man is because of Azathoth. Azathoth is an elder god even more terrifying than cthulu and is known as chaos itself. However he also has the title of "the blind idiot god" and if you were to encounter him it would drive you to pure insanity. I feel like Azathoth is just hiding as maruki's persona, but the moment they forged a contract Maruki was driven to madness in the form of forcing his reality and not taking no for an answer. As eluded to in a prior comment its like Fates madness enhancement and even more like nightingale. Maruki is 100% sensible but when it comes to this topic he takes it to the extreme, like with nightingale and her obsession for amputation even to a small wound. Also fun fact, Adam Kadmon is in jewish i believe religion the first man in the universe and essentially a creator. Lastly the two tracks I adore they are "I believe" and "throw your mask away" if you listen to the lyrics of both you see that they are actually a discussion between maruki (throw you mask away) and the phantom theives (I believe).
Well that was a long tangent I've wanted to say for the longest time, since maruki's palace had begun.

The way you talk is confusing me? Akechi is 100% alive. Cognition actualized him, so that is not an illusion you see. That is indeed Akechi. Same for Futabas mom and Harus dad, until you broke the illusion they were in fact alive.
Yes, Wakaba and Okumura are “alive”, but their part of Futaba and Haru’s ideal reality, so they (maybe) weren’t acting the way they would if they were still alive. That could be the same for Akechi, so it might not be the real him.
It’s deliberately been left up for debate
I've noticed more than a few people say something like that, and I feel like it's a mix of a few things, mainly;
1. The "perfect world illusion" trope is well known, and typically in that trope everything IS fake, so without explicitly being told otherwise, people would be inclined to think that
2. The fact that mementos and the real world are still merged to some degree isn't super well explained, so I wouldn't be surprised that people don't realize that cognitions are being made real, rather than it just being illusions
Aww, TMG thinks that if he knew the research would turn out like this, he never would have helped.
But at the same time, if he didn’t, he’d never save Sumire from her own self-harm. Meeting Maruki has allowed Sumire to come to the protagonist’s life.
If Sumi’s cognitive overlay was removed before she had a proper support system from the PTs, she would have died.
Except if sumire had had actual therapy instead of Maruki's cognitive pscience, she could have overcome her survivors guilt sooner rather than spending a year in limbo where while she wasn't suicidal, she still wasn't coping. And she had support before the phantom thieves, she had her family, but it was the cognitive pscience that disrupted that and caused her family (who were also grieving) more distress.
You got to hear the best music in the game this episode. The heist theme is called I Believe. The battle theme with Maruki/Azathoth is Keep Your Faith. The upcoming theme (which we caught a glimpse of) is Throw Away Your Mask. All 3 of these tunes are absolutely amazing and I love them.
I hope that you are prepared for what's next TMG. I really think the next episode is gonna hit you hard.

Also, is it right to say that Maruki is the most powerful, non-wild card persona-user to date? Unlike P4 and OG P5, nothing was really controlling or manipulating him (Izanami, Yaldabaoth, etc.). This power he has was born from his own strength and will of rebellion.
True, but lore-wise, isn’t Maruki only that strong in this arc because, at the time, he controls Mementos?
@@mystery8820 Well yes, but it still didn't seem like he had the help of a powerful deity even in his arc. If anything, the Phantom Thieves themselves gave him that power when they made their wish on Christmas Eve.
Oh by the way if you play your cards right in this battle, you can actually score the 4 baton passes very easily in this fight. It helps to dump as much damage into Azathoth as much as possible.
Also so many people go on and on about akechi’s nav lines and how they’re great, but the little monologue where he refuses to bend the knee to maruki’s demands, is some of the best voice acting I’ve ever heard.

I love that the lyrics of I believe (the song on the ascension of the stairs) and Throw away your mask (playing during the battle) are just the entire discussion between the thieves and Maruki.
I’m really hoping you do a bonus episode, looking at the bad ending and Akechi’s AOA.
Throughout all of this, you've been mentioning that life without suffering is not life, but how do we know that? This is the only life we've known, we don't know that suffering is a requirement. In fact, many creation stories paint a life that did not start in suffering. So that's some food for thought, and that's why I love Dr. Maruki's Palace and story, it forces players to step out of that good/evil, black/white morality.

There are two descriptions to Adam Kadmon, both supposedly come from Hebrew text. One is that Adam Kadmon was the spiritual world of light that existed before earth and is where all light and good things come from. The other is that Adam Kadmon is what Adam (the first human) was modeled after.

Adam Kadmon reminds me of those red war titans form "nausicaa of the valley of the wind", the way the neck and head are the same thickness even the lanky arms and legs. And the music in this game is amazing.

Another problem. Wanting people to be happy is all well and good, but it's impossible to be happy all the time, and if people aren't allowed to develop the mental toughness to deal with those not-happy moments, they'll be in real trouble when life goes south on them.
That only applies in a reality where life *does* go south on you though.

The fact your special didn’t hit was very hilarious because I thought that’d be epic to end that way
You know, Maruki's final choice he gave to us before the fight reminds me of the choice that Ryoji gave us in Persona 3. To live in ignorant bliss until the end, or to confront the harsh reality, whether it is of death, like in P3, or of life like here. The thing I like about both choices, is that it comes down to how the two different groups choose to live their lives rather than anything about saving the world or anything like that.
Now that I think about it, both bad endings are the same except one is where everyone dies, and here well it speaks for itself. Then again sumire would go back to being kasumi so in a way, both sumire and kasumi are officially dead.

I was looking forward to your reaction to the two tracks in this episode. The first song, “I Believe”, was an appropriate song for this day since it’s the Phantom Thieves’ grand ascension into their final battle, and I feel that the song captures the excitement and build towards a grand finale well. The second is “Throw Your Mask Away”, and I love how much it contrasts the first song. The word that comes to my mind when I hear this is “lament.” Neither Maruki nor the Phantom Thieves have anything personal against each other, and despite their differences in what they believe is right for the world; their hearts are in the right place; which makes the feeling of having no other choice but to fight all the more sad.

This is going to sound very cynical, but it has been divided even before then. This just resparked that conflict, one that has gone on for years, and it isn't that too, there are still protests for LGBT and women rights, which are still challenged and some even trying to destroy given rights, it is sad really.

Azathoth isn't exactly Cthulhu, he's the sleeping god the dreams up the entire universe and everything in it. If he wakes up, everything will disappear. He's the god of gods in the Cthulhu mythos to put it simply.
